Growing up in Damascus in Syria, Yusra dreamed of competing at the Olympics. She re-members watching the games with her father, who was a professional swimmer, and began training when she was 9. But after the civil war broke out when she was just 13, her life changed dramatically.“Our house was destroyed, so we had to live with my grandma,” she says.“We went to school, but it was dangerous; it was the same with swimming.”
After four years of living in fear of attacks, she and her older sister Sara made the difficult decision to flee in search of safety in Europe. They traveled to Turkey first. They then continued onto Germany, which became Yusra and Sara’s second home, although it took some time for it to feel like it. “The one thing that made me feel at home was swimming,” says Yusra.
She began training at a club, applying her determination and resilience (坚韧) to the sport she loved, and the next year, she was selected to compete at the Rio Olympics as part of the first ever refugee (难民) Olympic Team.
Competing on the world stage alongside athletes from all other countries, she realized that she was representing others like her — those who were forced to live beyond borders. From that moment, she has worked tirelessly to share her story, and those of so many others, to bring greater visibility to the dangers they have faced.
Yusra will launch a foundation to provide refugees around the globe with access to education and sport. She is also currently studying film and TV production in Los Angeles. Swimming remains her cornerstone, the true constant in her life. “Swimming has taught me a lot: it taught me to try again. If you’ re going through something tough, it doesn’t mean that it is over,” Yusra says.
21. What role does swimming play in Yusra’s life
A. It keeps her engaged in sports.
B. It gives her a sense of security.
C. It is a means of gaining recognition.
D. It offers a brief escape from reality.
22. What did Yusra realize after participating in the Rio Olympics
A. She had made a big achievement.
B. She had to search for her identity.
C. She could voice for the displaced.
D. She should befriend other athletes.
23. What does the story mainly tell us
A. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
B. One good turn deserves another.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
D. Action speaks louder than words.
B
We’ve all been there: in a lift, looking through phones to avoid eye contact; in a bank line, staring at the floor as silence stretches awkwardly; or on a plane, holding devices like shields (屏障) from the stranger next to us. It’s a common modern habit — but beneath this a voidance lies a problem. Maybe we’ve lost some ability to talk to others: our skill at starting chats has faded from choosing phones over talking for years. More likely, we just avoid starting a chat — it feels awkward to break silence, hard to find words, or unnecessary when we can hide behind phones. But next time you’re around strangers, pause: small talk is worth the discomfort. Experts call it a valuable social habit that brings easy-to-miss benefits.
It’s easy to ignore small talk and regard it as something unimportant, but we forget:deep relationships — romantic, professional, or friendly — would never start without casual chats first. Small talk is like oil for socializing, says Bernardo Carducci, head of Indiana University Southeast’s Shyness Research Institute. “Nearly every great love story starts with a silly weather comment in a cafe, and big business deals begin with casual pre-meeting chats about trends,” he explains. “Good small talk isn’t just exchanging words — it’s connecting, showing real interest, not just going through the motions. Asking a barista (咖啡师) ‘How’s your busiest shift ’ instead of ‘A latte, please.’ turns an order into a tiny human link.”
In a study, UBC psychology teacher Elizabeth Dunn tested customers at a local café. One group talked to waiters — asking about their day, commenting on new cakes, joking a-bout long lines. The other only spoke when needed: just ordering and thanking. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,” say Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral (边缘) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”
Dunn thinks reaching out to strangers can boost our sense of belonging — a quiet bond that eases loneliness. Carducci agrees: this connection starts with small chats. “Small talk is good manners’ base,” he says. “Nice day, isn’t it ” to a bus stop stranger, or “I love your necklace — where did you get it ” to a coworker, doesn’t just fill silence. It builds respect, eases tension, and reminds us we’re all just people wanting a little connection.”
24. What phenomenon (现象) is described in the first paragraph
A. Addiction to using smartphones.
B. Impatience with inefficient service.
C. Inappropriate behaviour in public places.
D. Absence of communication between strangers.
25. What is important for successful small talk according to Carducci
A. Showing good manners.

C. Focusing on a topic.
D. Making business deals.
26. What does the coffee shop study suggest about small talk
A. It improves family relationships. B. It develops people’s thinking ability.
C. It matters as much as formal talk. D. It makes people pretty good.
27. What does the underlined word “boost” in the last paragraph probably mean

Imagine staying in the icy wilderness of Antarctica, cut off from the rest of the world, with only a small group of scientists. Such a group might be expected to develop a culture of its own, but would that develop a new shared accent
As part of the project to explain the spoken accent development, a group of researchers led by Jonathan Harrington, professor of phonetics and speech processing at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, started the study. The researchers studied a group of 11 scientists spending six months on an island just west of the Antarctic Peninsula.
The scientists were from several countries, including the US, the UK, Iceland and Germany. As part of the study, they had to record themselves reading a list of vocabularies from a computer screen every few weeks. The list included words with vowel (元音) sounds /i:/, /u:/ and / / that have been found to change over time in different English accents.
The recordings were then sent to researchers. When the recordings were studied, the researchers found that the pronunciation of words with an / / sound— such as “flow,”“code” and “sew”— had changed a little over the six months. The scientists began to pronounce it more toward the front of their mouths than toward the back. (British pronunciations are already typically fronter than American / /.)
The researchers believe it shows the development of a new accent among the scientists. Harrington said, “When we speak to each other, we remember that speech, and then that has an influence on our own speech production.”
While only small changes were recorded, the researchers believe the experiment helps to explain how different accents are created among enclosed (封闭的) communities — and may help us know why American and British English have developed as they have.
28. What were the scientists expected to do during the study
A. Tell stories. B. Show pictures.
C. Make sentences. D. Read and record words.
29. Which word’s pronunciation may change in the enclosed community in the study
A. show. B. sheep.
C. tube. D. adult.
30. Which of the following do the researchers agree with concerning the finding
A. It proves life in Antarctica is difficult.
B. It uncovers the connection of vowel sounds.
C. It helps build communications among people with different accents.
D. It may explain American and British English’s development.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Different Accents Around the World.
B. The Development of English Language.
C. Does a New Accent Form Among Enclosed Communities
D. What Would Scientists’ Daily Life Be Like in Antarctica

73. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was in Philadelphia for a conference when I saw an ad in the hotel. A nearby theater was showing a documentary about several local animal shelters that were helping to save abandoned dogs across the country. I love animals and I felt an urge to go to this fundraising (募捐) event. However, none of my co-workers would go with me, and I was worried about walking on the street alone at night.
I ended up spending the evening in my hotel room, but as soon as I got back to my room I felt restless and bored. The theater where the event was taking place was only about five blocks from the hotel, and the area around the hotel didn’t seem particularly dangerous. So, I decided to go for it. I gathered up my wallet and room key and set off.
It was already getting dark and the streets were almost empty. I managed to find the street the theater was on, but when I turned the corner, I stopped in shock. In front of the theater were a group of bikers — clustered around their heavy motorcycles. They were all large men dressed in leather vests. One in particular, a mountain of a man with a thick beard and a scar above his eyebrow, was laughing loudly at something, his voice rough and echoing in the quiet street.
I’ ve known lots of motorcycle enthusiasts and most are nice people. However, in this case, I was a woman all alone, in a strange neighborhood, at night, and this rough-looking crowd — all wearing insignia (徽章) that indicated they were in some sort of club — standing before me. Warning bells began to sound in my head, and my heart was pounding. Was I at the right theater Had I misread the date of the event
A sign outside the theater told me that I was in the right place on the right evening. Nevertheless, I wondered if I should rush back to my hotel instead of walking through that crowd of bikers. The thought of squeezing past them, of drawing their attention, made my palms sweat. I finally decided that I would be safer inside the theater. Hopefully, the bikers would have gone away by the time the film was over.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside.

When the film began, I realized that the bikers were an animal rescue group.

72. Dear Jim,
Hearing that you often come across new words in your English study and you are in a dilemma when choosing between an electronic translation pen and a paper dictionary, I’d like to recommend the former to you.
Reasons are as follows. For one thing, an electronic translation pen is extremely time-saving. When you encounter unknown words while reading or listening, you can get accurate translations instantly by scanning them, which won’t break your learning pace. For another, an electronic translation pen is portable and multifunctional. You can carry it with you anywhere, and most pens offer extra useful features like standard pronunciation guides, typical example sentences and even offline usage.
Hope my suggestion works for you and wish you great progress in your English study.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Jim,
Hearing that you’re always stuck with unfamiliar words in English learning and can’t make up your mind between an electronic translation pen and a paper dictionary, I’m writing to recommend the latter to you.
Two reasons account for my suggestion. For one thing, a paper dictionary offers far more thorough details, like word roots, collocations and practical examples, enabling you to grasp the true meaning of words deeply. For another, the process of looking up words in it helps you concentrate better and leaves a deeper impression in your mind, which is beneficial to long-term memory.
Hope my advice is helpful to you and wish you remarkable progress in your English study.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节 (满分25分)
73. I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside. The dim lights cast shadows over their leather-clad figures, and I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. I hesitated for a moment, wanting to turn and run, but the thought of the abandoned dogs in the documentary pulled me forward. I scanned the room for an empty seat, my eyes darting away whenever a biker glanced in my direction. Finally, I spotted a small seat in the back row and slipped into it, my hands still trembling. I kept my head down, trying to make myself as small as possible, counting the minutes until the film started.
When the film began, I realized that the bikers were an animal rescue group. The documentary showed them loading crates of shivering dogs onto their motorcycles, driving through rain and snow to transport the animals to shelters. The man with the scar above his eyebrow was featured prominently — he was seen gently wrapping a blanket around a scared puppy, his rough voice softening as he whispered comforting words. Cheers erupted from the bikers in the theater when the scene ended, and I felt a wave of embarrassment wash over me for judging them based on their appearance. By the time the film finished, I had joined them in clapping, grateful for the reminder that kindness often comes in unexpected packages.
