At the airport, a security (安全) problem left my wife Cherié and me in a huge line, waiting to fly home to
Cincinnati. Just as we accepted the wait, I worried a lot: I’d left our new camera, which cost $1, 500, in the rental
car. I rushed to call the taxi company, and to my relief, they said the driver was coming to return the camera. When
meeting me, he even turned down the reward I offered. When I got the camera and returned to the line to wait, the
crowd had grown even bigger. I was sure I’d miss our flight.
Then a security officer walked over, smiling. “People like you have a special entrance — no need to wait in
line,” he said, gesturing for me to follow. He explained this special channel (通道) was set up to keep crowds
orderly, and then he talked excitedly about my “movies” — Solo: A Star Wars Story, Champions and Now You
See Me. That’s when I realized: he thought I was Woody Harrelson, an actor I’m always mistaken for. When he
asked about the Champions cast, I laughed and said I hadn’t seen them in forever.
As we reached a private security room, fear hit — I didn’t want trouble from the mix-up. I tried to show my
ID, but he waved it off. “People like you use false names, right ” he said. I quickly said the first name that came to
mind: “Karl Haffner”. Later I realized Karl and Woody share strange similarities — the same hometown, height,
even eating only plants. Before I knew it, I was through security and waiting at the gate with the camera.
Cherié looked at me with wide eyes, saying, “How did you cut the line ” I smiled broadly, holding up the
camera. “Call me Woody—I got through the airport’s special channel for public figures,” I said. She rolled her eyes
but laughed when I told her the story. To this day, I still feel special, for the happy mistake that reminded me: life’s
best moments aren’t planned. A little mix-up and lots of laughter are all you need to make a trip unforgettable.
4. Why did the author phone the taxi company
A. To get the lost camera. B. To book another taxi ride.
C. To return the rental camera. D. To express thanks for the service.
5. What happened to the author when he was waiting in line again
A. He kept the crowds orderly. B. He met Woody Harrelson.
C He was mistaken for an actor. D. He talked about his movies.
6. How did Cherié feel when seeing her husband according to paragraph 4
A. Annoyed. B. Frightened. C. Anxious. D. Curious.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Going with the Flow B. Believing in Strangers
C. Enjoying a Happy Mistake D. Buying a Ticket to Life
C
A major reason why plastic bags and yogurt containers aren’t recycled is that it’s much more frugal to make
these products from the ground up than to recycle them. However, a new recycling technique promises a
cost-effective way to turn these common plastic waste items into high-quality liquid fuels.
What makes plastics useful, namely their strength and resistance to high temperatures, becomes an annoyance
when it comes to recycling the materials. The strong carbon-carbon bonds in these plastics requires very high
temperatures to break, making the process energy-consuming. Once the bonds break, the smaller molecules (分子)
quickly form new bonds, resulting in unwanted chemicals. These byproducts then have to be broken down again,
adding time and complexity.
Researchers developed a way to transform these plastics into useful fuels at temperatures below 100℃,
without creating any side products. They conduct the chemical reaction in the presence of a new type of catalyst
(催化剂) in a special acidic solution. In these reaction conditions, as soon as the carbon bonds in the plastic break
apart, new bonds form in a controlled way, giving off the chemicals called alkanes. The alkanes can be used either
as a fuel or as raw material for new plastics. The entire reaction takes place in a single reaction container. It takes
only three hours and occurs at 70℃. By comparison, existing recycling techniques typically require two stages,
take much more time, and need temperatures of over 200°C.
Up to now, this catalyst has been used in some factories. But it will take more research to know whether the
technique can be translated to more occasions. If so, such a low-cost method to turn single-use plastics into
high-value materials could go a long way in making the plastic economy sustainable.
8. What does the underlined word “frugal” mean in paragraph 1
A. typical. B. expensive. C. inexpensive. D. reasonable.
9. What can we know about plastics from paragraph 2
A. They stretch easily and quickly. B. They are productive in poisonous gases.
C. They fail to resist heat perfectly. D. They are stable in chemical properties.
10. What does the new way of recycling plastics feature
A. Keeping new bonds from forming. B. Controlling acidity of the solution.
C. Stressing cleanliness and speed. D. Extending functions of plastics.
11. What is researchers’ attitude toward the technique’s wide application
A. Cautious. B. Hopeless. C. Critical. D. Optimistic.
D
Picture this, you win two tickets to a sold-out concert and eagerly text to ask your friends if they’d like to join.
There comes their response “Maybe.” Your mood immediately turns, for you need to wait for their decisions before
you can figure out your plans for the concert.
If you’ve experienced anything like the above anecdote (趣闻), you’re not alone. People responding “maybe”
to invitations is a common yet annoying aspect of social life. What goes on in people’s heads when they aren’t sure
whether to accept an invitation Social invitations can be a delicate dance. People often misread what someone
extending an invitation wants to hear and overestimate an inviter’s likelihood of preferring a “maybe” over a “no.”
Moreover, they fail to realize how much more disrespected people feel when they receive a “maybe” in response to
their invitation.
Naturally, we wanted to figure out why this awkward dynamic plays out. We found that it’s largely due to
something called “motivated reasoning.” Motivated reasoning occurs when a person interprets information in a
biased (有偏差的) way to suit their own wishes. In other words, invitees convince themselves that inviters want to
hear “maybe” instead of “no” because a “maybe” is better for the invitees, allowing them to leave their options
open. Besides, people tend to overestimate the negative consequences of saying “no” to invitations, thinking it will
upset, anger and disappoint inviters.
However, there were certain situations that made people more comfortable saying “no” to an invitation. When
recipients of an invitation put themselves in the shoes of the person extending the invitation, they are more likely to
realize that they’d probably prefer a definite answer. When the participants get invited to do something they didn’t
want to do, they had no desire to keep their options open. The motivated reasoning then became irrelevant.
While navigating social situations can be tricky, being direct and definite is sometimes best. It might reduce
your options. But it’ll keep those who invite you from being left uncertain and maybe they will still think of you
when the next concert comes to town.
12. Why is the concert anecdote mentioned at the beginning
A. To explain the background of the invitation.
B. To stress the importance of quick replies.
C. To encourage immediate decision- making.
D. To introduce a common social situation.
第 9页/共 23页
13. What is the main reason for the response of “maybe” to an invitation
A. A biased interpretation of social cues.
B. A desire for harmonious communication.
C. An underestimation of refusal consequence.
D. An understanding of the inviter’s expectation.
14. What is the author’s suggestion in the last paragraph
A. Keeping your options open for better plans.
B. Accepting invitations to maintain friendships.
C. Prioritizing clear response over open options.
D. Thinking twice before refusing an invitation.
15. What’s the passage’s main purpose
A. To explore why people say “maybe” and advocate clear replies.
B. To explain the hidden consequences of “maybe” in social invitations.
C. To discuss the awkwardness of uncertain replies and share advice.
D. To keep options open by changing replies from “no” to “maybe”.

We all know that eating too much sugar isn’t good for us, as its consumption is linked to health dangers like
obesity, heart disease, and cancer. Reducing sugar intake not only helps you avoid the harm of overconsumption.
____16____
The first thing to understand is that not all sugar is bad for you because there’s a big difference between
natural sugars and added sugars. ____17____ They provide energy and sweetness, urging us to eat food rich in
vitamins, minerals and nutrients that offset the sugar. For instance, a medium mango has over 20g of natural sugar
but plenty of fiber for absorption.
____18____ Added during processing, cooking or at the table, they’re listed as “added sugars” on labels, with
over 200 names like “honey” or “corn syrup”. What’s worse, added sugars offer no meaningful nutrients — they’
re “empty calories”. ____19____ Too much intake raises risks of immune system disorders, high blood pressure
and over a dozen cancers. A 2023 study links 35% more added sugar to 65% higher risk of heart disease and a 10%
higher risk of stroke. They also feed harmful gut bacteria, causing inflammation and mental health issues.
Cutting added sugars boosts quality of life. It lowers depression risk, enhances focus before tests, reduces acne
for better skin, and calms the brain for better sleep. ____20____ You benefit from permanent reduction, but even
temporary cuts work — 8 weeks of a low-sugar diet improves teens’ liver health, and type 2 diabetes also drops
rapidly.
A. Many struggle to cut sugar due to strong desires.
B. Added sugars, however, are a wholly different story.
C. Importantly, the benefits can appear in a very short time.
D. Processed foods often hide huge amounts of added sugars.
E. Moreover, it brings surprising benefits you will enjoy soon.
F. Their true danger lies in the harm they do to bodily systems.
G. Natural sugars in bread, fruit and milk are naturally existing.

I had always thought of my neighborhood as a peaceful and friendly place. However, all that changed when
Mr. Thompson moved in next door. He was a middle-aged man who seemed to have a rather strange lifestyle.
At first, I didn’t pay much attention to him. But one day, I noticed that his car was always parked in a way that
blocked part of my driveway. It was really inconvenient, especially when I was in a hurry to go to work or pick up
my kids from school. I politely asked him to be more careful with his parking, but he just gave me a cold look and
said he would do so as he was pleased. This made me get cross with him.
As time went by, more problems arose. Mr. Thompson had a big dog that barked loudly day and night. I could
barely have a sound sleep, and my kids were also disturbed by the noise. I tried to talk to him about the dog, but he
refused to listen. He even accused me of being too sensitive.
One evening, I came home from a long-day work, extremely worn out. Just as I was about to park my car, I
found that Mr. Thompson’s car was once again blocking my driveway. I was so frustrated that I knocked on his
door forcefully. After seemed a long time, the door opened. There stood Mr. Thompson with an indifferent look on
his face. Words were exchanged, and both of us were angry. We had a heated argument. He even slammed the door
shut right in front of me. After that, we didn’t talk to each other for weeks. My once proud and friendly
neighborhood ties are gone.
One day, as I was mowing the lawn(修剪草坪)in my garden, I saw Mr. Thompson struggling to carry a heavy
box along his driveway.

A. Cautious. B. Hopeless. C. Critical. D. Optimistic.

It seemed that he was about to drop it. I hesitated for a moment, recalling all the unpleasant experiences I had
with him. A part of me felt that he deserved to struggle after how rudely he had treated me. But as I watched him
wobble under the weight of the box, his face tense with effort, another part of me felt guilty for just standing there.
I had always believed in kindness, yet here I was, debating whether to help a neighbor in need. Taking a deep
breath, I set aside my pride and walked over. “Let me help you.” I said, reaching for the box. He looked at me,
surprised, but after a brief pause, he nodded silently, and together we carried it inside.
As we were standing in his living room, Mr. Thompson broke the ice. He let out a sigh and, in a softer tone
than I had ever heard from him, admitted that he hadn’t meant to be rude before. Recovering from surgery had left
him frustrated and short-tempered, and he realized now how inconsiderate he had been. Hearing this, my frustration
melted away. I admitted that I had judged him too quickly. As we talked, the tension between us faded, replaced by
a quiet understanding. From that day on, our relationship changed—we weren’t just neighbors anymore but two
people willing to give each other a second chance.
