Here are some of your best choices worldwide if you only have limited time for travel.
Santorini, Greece
With its unique blue-roofed churches whitewashed buildings and colorful beaches, the island is a dream
place for photographers. Also, some archaeologically (考古地) significant sites are worth a visit. Locals like to say

there’s more wine than water on the island where it doesn’t often rain.
Machu Picchu, Peru
As one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is one of the most-visited attractions in Peru.
Visitors are particularly attracted by Temple of the Condor, a rock temple carved to look like the impressive bird in
its name. Book tickets in advance, as only 2,500 people can visit Machu Picchu each day.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Everything is bigger and better in Dubai, which has various enjoyable sites, including water-parks, shopping
malls and even an indoor ski spot. Though you’re likely to pay a pretty penny for a trip to Dubai, you can save a
little cash by visiting during summer months.
Maui, Hawaii
Maui is home to some of the island’s best-known attractions and beaches. Besides, you can explore the world’
s largest volcano that’s resting, Haleakala. This is Hawaii, so your trip will be on the high-priced side. Maui has
most beaches, with red, white and black sand.

In a town near the Potomac River, George and Anne Allen, both 82, struggle to remain in their beloved
three-story house and neighborhood. Mr. Allen has had trouble walking since he broke his backbone in a fall down
the stairs, and he expects to lose his driver’s license when it comes up for renewal given his physical state. Mrs.
Allen recently got her foot hurt getting out of bed. Neither can climb up to change the light or bend under the sink
to fix a leak. Without outside help, stores and public locations mean unimaginable hikes to them.
So the Allens have banded together with their neighbors, who are equally determined to avoid being forced
from their homes by dependence. Along with more than 100 communities nationwide, their group is part of a
movement to make neighborhoods comfortable places to grow old in.
“We are totally dependent on ourselves,” Mr. Allen said. “But I want to live in a mixed community, not just
with the elderly. And as long as we can do it here, that’s what we want.”
Their group has been registered as a nonprofit corporation, is setting membership dues, and is lining up
providers of transportation, home repair, companionship, security and other services to meet their needs at home for
as long as possible.
Urban planners say this movement, organized by residents instead of government agencies, could make “aging
in place” safe and affordable for a majority of elderly people. Although not the cure- all for those with complicated
medical needs, the approach addresses what experts say can be a premature decision by older people to give up
their homes in response to relatively small problems. As these small problems mount, sometimes accompanied by
pressure from adult children, the elderly homeowner is caught off guard. Remaining at home without sufficient help
is frightening. “If people don’t feel so overpowered, they don’t have to jump at precipitous decisions. Actually
practices like moving into nursing homes are hard to be reversed,” said an expert.
For inspiration, “aging in place” groups now pay yearly dues — $580 for an individual in exchange for the
security of knowing that carpenters, chefs, computer experts or home health helpers are one phone call away.
4. What is NOT mentioned as a problem the Allens meet with
A. Physical weakness due to the broken bone.
B. Possible loss of driver’s license due to breaking traffic rules.
C. Failure to handle certain fixing tasks due to limited mobility.
D. Difficulty in traveling to public places alone due to physical condition.
5. Which of the following statements is TRUE
A. People like Allens gather to live in a special place for shared elderly caring.
B. The government arranges necessary services for people like Allens.
C. Senior people give up “aging in place” life mainly out of pressure from children.
D. “Aging in place” people pay to have necessary service staff on call.
6. The underlined word precipitous in the passage is closest in meaning to ________.
A. alternative B. fake C. rushed D. joint
7. Which of the following is probably the title of the passage
A. US grey band fights to stay at home
B. Attention, US seniors are suffering
C. At home vs Nursing home-a hard choice for US seniors
D. US adult children, it’s time to care for your parents
C
In 1879, an 8-year-old girl made a discovery that would rock our understanding of human history. On the
walls of Altamira cave in northern Spain, she spotted amazing drawings of wild cows, painted in vivid red and
black. More striking even than the images was their age: they were made thousands of years ago by modern
humans’ supposedly primitive ancestors. Today, nearly 400 caves across Europe have been found decorated with
hand stencils (模板), strange symbols and beautiful images of animals created by these skillful artists.
The discoveries led to the view that artistic talent arose after modern humans arrived in the region some
40,000 years ago, as part of a “cultural explosion” reflecting a flowering of the human mind. But more recent
evidence has blown this idea out of the water. For a start, modern humans might not have been the first artists in
Europe. What’s more, a collection of cave paintings emerging in Indonesia has dismissed the idea that Europe was
the centre of creativity.
Local people have long known that the caves of the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, contain many painted
images. Modern humans are thought to have reached the region some 65,000 years ago, but nobody imagined the
art could be very old because ancient paintings seem unlikely to survive in the environment of high temperatures. A
team of researchers led by Maxime Aubert, now at Griffith University in Australia, upended this idea using a
technique that is shifting our understanding of cave art. Using this technique in seven caves, they found a hand
stencil was at least 39,900 years old, making it the oldest known hand stencil at that time.
This opened a floodgate to new discoveries in Indonesia. These included a hunting scene created at least
43,900 years ago, and by far the oldest descriptive artwork. “When we found that image, we were absolutely
delighted, but when it turned out to be that old, we were almost jumping with joy,” says Adam Brumm, also at
Griffith University.
8. What did the girl find in the cave
A. Wild animals. B. Ancient images.
C. Painting techniques. D. Recording artists.
9. What was a misunderstanding removed by recent evidence about the cave art
A. It can be traced back to Europe.
B. It reflected the flowering of human minds.
C. Modern humans led to its rise in Indonesia.
D. Modern humans might not have been real artists.
10. What does the underlined word “upended” mean in paragraph 3
A. Proved. B. Strengthened. C. Overturned. D. Overemphasized.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The amazing discoveries. B. The researchers’ expectations.
C. The benefits of the technique. D. The description of the cave art.
D
Until recently, gravitational waves could have been the stuff of Einstein’s imagination. Before they were
detected, these waves in space time existed only in the physicist’s general theory of relativity, as far as scientists
knew. Now, researchers are on the hunt for more ways to detect the waves. “The study of gravitational waves is
booming,” says astrophysicist Karan Jani of Vanderbilt University in Nashville. “This is just remarkable. No field I
can think of in fundamental physics has seen progress this fast.”
Just as light comes in a variety of wavelengths, so do gravitational waves. Different wave lengths point to
different types of origins of the universe and require different kinds of detectors. Gravitational waves with
wavelengths of a few thousand kilometers — like those detected by the United States, Italy and Japan — come
mostly from pairs of black holes 10 or so times the mass of the sun, or from collisions of dense cosmic blocks
called neutron stars (中子星). These detectors could also spot waves from certain types of exploding stars and
rapidly moving neutron stars.
In contrast, huge waves that span light-years are thought to be created by orbiting pairs of bigger black holes
with masses billions of times that of the sun. In June, scientists reported the first strong evidence of these types of
waves by turning the entire galaxy (星系) into a detector, watching how the waves make slight changes to the
timing of regular blinks from neutron stars throughout the Milky Way.
Physicists now hope to dive into a vast, cosmic ocean of gravitational waves of all sorts of sizes. These waves
could reveal new details about the secret lives of exotic objects such as black holes and unknown parts of the
universe.
Physicist Jason Hogan of Stanford University thinks there are still a lot of gaps in the coverage of wavelengths.
“But it makes sense to cover all the bases. Who knows what else we may find ” he says. The search for capturing
the full complement of the universe’s gravitational waves exactly could take observatories out into the moon, to the
atomic area and elsewhere.
12. What does Karan Jani think of the current study on gravitational waves
A. It is rapid and pioneering.
B. It is slow but steadily increasing.
C. It is interrupted due to limited detectors.
D. It is progressing as fast as any other field.
13. What do the detected gravitational waves mostly indicate
A. The creation of different kinds of detectors.
B. Collisions of planets outside the solar system.
C. The presence of light in different wavelengths.
D. Activities involving black holes and neutron stars.
14. How did scientists manage to find huge waves’ evidence
A. By analyzing sunlight.
B. By locating the new galaxy.
C. By using the whole galaxy as a tool.
D. By observing the sun’s regular movement.
15. What can be inferred about the future study according to the last paragraph
A. It’ll exclude the atomic field.
B. It’ll focus exactly on the mapping of the galaxy.
C. It’ll require prioritizing certain wavelengths on the moon.
D. It’ll explore potential places to detect gravitational waves.

Many people think that positive thinking is mostly about keeping one's head in the sand and ignoring daily
problems, trying to look optimistic. In reality it has more to do with the way an individual talks to himself. Self-talk
is a constant stream of thoughts of a person, who is often unaware and uncertain of some events, phenomena,
people, or even the person himself.____16____Meanwhile, positive thinking can help to stop negative self-talks
and start to form a positive view on an issue. People who regularly practise positive thinking tend to solve problems
more effectively. They are less exposed to stress caused by external factors. They tend to believe in themselves and
in what they do.
____17____People who think positively demonstrate increased life spans, lower rates of depression and
anxiety, better physical and psychological health, reduced risks of death from heart problems. Positive thinking also
contributes to one's ability to deal with problems and hardships.____18____For example, researchers have found
that in the case of a crisis accompanied by strong emotions, such as a natural disaster, positive thinking can provide
a sort of buffer against depression and anxiety. Resilient people who think positively tend to treat every problem as
a challenge, a chance for improvement of any kind, or as an opportunity for personal growth. Pessimists, on the
contrary, tend to perceive problems as a source of additional stress.____19____
In conclusion, positive thinking is a powerful and effective tool for dealing with hard times and improving the
quality of one's life. It doesn't have anything to do with ignorant optimism when an individual refuses to notice a
problem.____20____
Thinking in a positive, self-encouraging way brings about many benefits to one's physical and mental health.
A. It doesn't cause any severe emotional discomfort, either.
B. Negative self-talk damages self-confidence and decreases self-respect.
C. It helps one to remain clear-headed and confident in difficult situations.
D. Positive thinking has several beneficial effects on the body and the mind.
E. As thinking changes, an individual's behaviour and habits change as well.
F They often offer a real alternative to the common and regular way of thinking.
G. They often feel discouraged long before trying to solve the problem, even if small.

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. He wanted his father to send him a present. For
many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer’s showroom, and knowing his father could well
afford it, he told him that was all he wanted. He was desperate for the day when he got the car he desired.
As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. He
dreamed himself driving freely on the road, Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his
private study telling him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and that how much he loved him, Afterwards,
he handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the
box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man’s name embossed (凸印) in gold. Angrily, he
raised his voice to his father and said, “With all your money you give me a Bible ” He then stormed out of the
house, leaving the Bible and never returning home.
Many years passed and the young man was very successful and secured a place in business, He had a beautiful
home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him, He
had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling
him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately

【答案】When he arrived at his father’s house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search
through his father’s important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. Tears welling up in
his eyes, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. He stood there, paralysed with shock, a car key dropping
from the back of the Bible, which had a tag with the dealer’s name and the date of his graduation, the same dealer
who had the sports car he had desired.
How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected Sometimes we don’t
realize the good fortune we have or we could have because we expect “the packaging” to be different. What may
appear as bad fortune may in fact be the door that is just waiting to be opened. We are supposed to arm ourselves
with the capacity to explore the truth. A profound understanding of the world and its complexities reveals that the
truth often lies beneath the surface, concealed by the veil of appearances.
