When I started playing soccer as a kid, I just fell in love with it. I wanted to be a soccer player when I grew up.
But when I was nine, I started losing my eyesight. At first, I told myself. “If I just work harder than everyone else, I
can still compete.” However, my perseverance (坚持) wasn’t going to be realistic. And because I kept pushing, my
mental health started to worsen. I developed an eating disorder and depression (抑郁症).
When I hit rock bottom in high school, I started to understand that I couldn’t just keep going down that path of
trying to achieve something that wasn’t possible.
My older brother got me started on the right path after I hit rock bottom. He encouraged me to try swimming.
The freedom of being in the water had a calming effect on me: It gave me a place where I could feel confident
again. I was able to move from the dream of playing soccer to sports that I could do, like swimming, track and field,
and cross-country. Naturally, that combination led to triathlon (铁人三项运动).
In my senior year, I signed up for my first triathlon. By that point, while I still had some eyesight, I was
legally blind. My parents biked and ran the course with me the night before, which helped me learn and remember
key landmarks.
That first race was great. Most importantly that race opened a new door in sports and in life for me. When I
went to Michigan State for college, I started the triathlon team there. That gave me another network of support, and
surrounded me with people to train with and work with.
None of that would have happened if I had continued to play soccer. Sometimes you have to change the path
you thought you’d be on, but you can still persevere on that new path.
4. What brought the author’s soccer dream to an end
A. His poor eating habits. B. His failing eyesight.
C. His feeling of being unaccepted. D. His lack of training.
5. What effect did swimming have on the author
A. It made him feel free and confident. B. It changed his views on health.
C. It led to his dream of being a triathlon coach. D. It helped him become a professional athlete.
6. Why does the author stress the importance of his first triathlon
A. It widened his path of life. B. It opened his door to college.
C. It helped him regain his eyesight. D. It gave him a new dream of becoming a swimmer.
7. What can we learn from the author’s experience
A. Success often comes from hard work. B. It’s important to have a strong family support.
C. Changing the path can lead to new chances. D. One should always stick to their original dream.
C
What do classrooms, computer desks, dining halls, and libraries have in common That’s the places where
students spend so much of their time. Although hours of studying burn mental energy, both your body and mind
need physical exercise to work effectively.
The importance of exercise is nothing new. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that to be successful in academic (学
术的) studies, a person should spend two hours on exercise every day, for health can’t give in to learning. A strong
body makes the mind strong.
It turns out Jefferson was on to something. A study by researchers at Tufts University found that students
who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better state of physical health and
greater happiness than those who didn’t exercise. This and other evidence (证据) suggest that the real benefits of
exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer devotion (坚持) to regular activity.
But experts today do not demand 2 hours of daily exercise. The US Department of Health and Human Services
recommends that people get at least 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.
Walking, jogging and swimming are easy ways to increase your heart rate and improve health. Exercise can
also help lower blood pressure and reduce stress. For women, exercise that makes the body and bones bear weight
— like walking or running — may reduce the risk of osteoporosis (骨质疏松) later in life.
You’ll likely discover another benefit of exercise as well: greater self-confidence. This may make it easier for
you to take part in class and help you perform well in academic and social situations.
8. What can be known from the first paragraph
A. Dining halls can also be used to do exercise.
B. A lot of students like to read while eating.
C. Students need to pay enough attention to exercise.
D. Study and exercise burn the same amount of energy.
9. What does the underlined part “Jefferson was on to something” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Jefferson was very fond of exercise. B. Jefferson’s statement was meaningful.
C. Jefferson was on the way to doing exercise. D. Jefferson realized the importance of exercise.
10. What would be the best title for the text
A. The Secret of Success B. The Importance of Exercise
C. The Benefits of Academic Studies D. The Way to Improve Mental Health
11. Where can we probably find the text
A. In a dictionary. B. In a travel guide.
C. In a storybook. D. In a health magazine.
D
Over the past 50,000 years, at least 161 kinds of mammals (哺乳动物) were driven to extinction during this
period. The largest of them were hit the hardest — the megaherbivores, weighing over a ton. Fifty thousand years
ago, there were 57 kinds of megaherbivores. Today, only 11 remain. These remaining 11 kinds have also seen
extreme reductions in their populations, but not to the point of complete extinction.
A research group from the Danish Aarhus University now concludes that many of these lost kinds were hunted
to extinction by humans.
Jens-Christian Svenning, a researcher, says, “Early modern humans were effective hunters of even the largest
animals and clearly had the ability to reduce the populations of large animals. These large animals were and are
particularly easy to die out because they have long gestation (妊娠) periods and produce very few babies at a
time.”
The study shows that human hunting of large animals such as mammoths, mastodons, and giant sloths was
widespread and continuous across the world. It also shows that the animals went extinct at very different times and
at different rates around the world. In some local areas, it happened quite quickly, while in other places it took over
10,000 years. But everywhere, it happened after modern humans arrived, or in Africa’s case, after cultural
advancements among humans.
The researchers point out that the loss of large animals has had deep ecological (生态的) effects. Large
animals play a central role in ecosystems. Their disappearance has resulted in great changes in ecosystem structures
and functions.
“Our results show the need for active protection and restoration efforts. By reintroducing large mammals, we
can help restore ecological balances and support biodiversity, which developed in ecosystems rich in large animals,”
says Svenning.
12. How many kinds of megaherbivores are there today
A. 161. B. 57. C. 11. D. 0.
13. What made the large animals easy to be extinct
A. Their few babies. B. Their long life.
C. Their special diet. D. Their slow growth.
14. What does the fact that the species went extinct at different times and rates show
A. The environment in different areas was the same.
B. There were no large animals left in some areas.
C. Large animals could adapt easily to different conditions.
D. Human hunting was not the only cause of extinction.
15. What’s Paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The far-reaching effect of the extinction of large mammals on the ecosystem.
B. The need to stop human activities to protect large mammals.
C. The historical process of human hunting large mammals.
D. The importance of large mammals in the food chain.

In 1997, Apryle Oswald was on a road trip with her boyfriend and two dogs, driving through a wide-open
stretch of Nevada. Suddenly, one of the dogs tried to jump in the front seat. Oswald turned sharply and lost control
of the car.
“I can picture it very, very clearly,” she remembered. “The car did a somersault (筋斗), back-over-front, for
nearly a hundred yards.”
Once it stopped, she unfastened her seat-belt and got out of the car, yelling for her boyfriend, John Williams,
who had disappeared.
“All of a sudden I see him come running towards me, and then I break down,” she said. She learned later she
had damaged lungs and cracked ribs (肋骨开裂). “And I remember laying on the ground, and I just couldn’t get
up... I remember being cold — really, really cold.”
At that point it was around midnight, with below-freezing temperatures. One of their dogs was badly injured,
and needed attention. Williams tried to flag down the cars driving by, but no one slowed down. They started to
worry. “I… remember him coming back and saying, ‘Nobody’s stopping, nobody’s stopping,’” she said.
Williams eventually took off his coat and threw it at a truck coming by. “He got the guy to stop.” Oswald said.
“And that guy’s... the unsung hero.”
Oswald doesn’t recall his name, or what he looked like. But she remembers his deep voice, and how he
wrapped her in a blanket. “I recall in my mind... this wool blanket, and covering me up to make sure I was warm,”
she said.
Luckily the man had an emergency radio in his truck, so he called for help. An air medical helicopter arrived
and sent Oswald to the hospital.
If her unsung hero had left after that, it would have been enough. She believes that if not for him, she might
have died of hypothermia (体温过低). But his kindness didn’t end there.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
For the next three nights, the man drove Williams back and forth between his motel and the hospital.

9. What does the underlined part “Jefferson was on to something” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Jefferson was very fond of exercise. B. Jefferson’s statement was meaningful.
C. Jefferson was on the way to doing exercise. D. Jefferson realized the importance of exercise.
10. What would be the best title for the text
A. The Secret of Success B. The Importance of Exercise
C. The Benefits of Academic Studies D. The Way to Improve Mental Health
11. Where can we probably find the text
A. In a dictionary. B. In a travel guide.
C. In a storybook. D. In a health magazine.

For the next three nights, the man drove Williams back and forth between his motel and the hospital. Thus
Williams could visit her. He even drove their injured dog, Digby, to the vet clinic for blood transfusions. “He just

really cared,” she said. “And he just went above and beyond.” She wishes she had gotten his phone number, to
thank him again for saving her life and for sticking around to help. “I mean, who does that ” she said. “What an
amazing person...what an amazing thing for a stranger to do in the middle of a cold Nevada night.”
After that, Oswald truly never saw the man again, but she decided to pay it forward. Nowadays, whenever she
happens to catch sight of a person dealing with car troubles, or someone who seemingly looks cold or hungry, with
a discomfort expression on their face, she unfailingly stops. This has developed into her unique way of repaying the
kindness that was once shown to her and passing it forward to others. “If I happen to go by somebody who is in
need of help, I always deeply think, ‘Is there something meaningful that I can do to make a difference ’” Oswald
seriously stated. “I feel an inner desire to offer help whenever I am able to.”
