At 60 years old, my mom was found to have Parkinson's disease. In the early days of my mother's illness, she and my father focused on keeping her mobile. They also wanted to ensure that she was well enough to stay at home and avoid long-term care. So, she began taking medicine that would help her keep her ability to move. The downside of the medicine my parents would later learn, was that it sped up memory loss.
Parkinson's is a progressive illness. This means that the conditions only worsen over time. Over the years, both her movement and memory worsened. The main problem we faced was that she was getting more agitated (焦虑不安的) and aggressive in the evenings. This period of increased agitation, irritability (易怒) and confusion made caring for my mom an overwhelming task.
It's painful to see your parent getting weaker. I really wanted to find a way to help. Then, by chance, my parents discovered a music program that aired on the radio in the evenings. The change in my mother was quick and clear. She was happy— sitting in her chair, nodding along to the music as it played, and even singing!
Music had always played a role in my mom's life—she had been active in her singing group for years—up until it was no longer possible for her to stand comfortably in the risers. As soon as my dad and I realized the big influence it had on her spirit, we were playing music all day. We began setting the TV to music stations for as much of the day as possible and listening to music programs in the evenings. Music has lifted a great weight from my father's and my shoulders.
In addition to making it easier to care for her, music also brought light back to my mom's eyes that had dimmed(变暗淡).
24. What harm did the medicine cause to the author's mother
A. Poor eyesight. B. Sleep disorder.
C. Faster memory loss. D. Weaker movement ability.
25. What does the underlined word "overwhelming" in paragraph 3mean
A. Really creative. B. Very difficult.
C. Quite educational. D. Truly shameful.
26. Why did the author's family play music during the day and evening
A. To help the family find a shared interest.
B.To satisfy her strong interest in music.
C. To make her father feel cared for.
D. To lift her mother's spirit.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. Hope in the midst of forgetting
B. Suggestions for caring for a parent
C. What it means to grow old gracefully
D. A long road of confusion and discovery
C
Errors can be gateways to new ideas. In 1888, Lee Kum Sheung, a young cook in southern China, forgot the oyster soup he was cooking until it became thick and sticky. Once Lee discovered how tasty the soup was, he started selling it in bottles. That lucky mistake made his family later the fourth-richest one in Hong Kong.
But not every mistake brings luck. They lead not to riches but, usually, to embarrassment and self-doubt. Still, even the worst mistake can prove to be useful.
Some mistakes happen for a lack of experience. Katharine Graham made endless errors that could have been avoided after she became the publisher of the Washington Post overnight, following her husband’s sudden death. She was determined to prevent them from happening again. Later Graham developed the Washington Post from a city newspaper into a respected national one.
Of course, even those with plenty of experience can fail. So how can individuals and companies approach mistakes In her book Right Kind of Wrong, Amy Edmondson, a professor at Harvard Business School, explores how to build a healthy relationship with failure. She argues that excellence requires taking risks. The important thing is to establish what needs to be done differently next time.
Ms. Edmondson also argues that neither people nor organizations can learn if they don’t admit that an error has happened. Instead, failures need to be carefully examined. That may mean having a process in place to signal when things have gone wrong. Workers on Toyota’s production lines, for example, can press a button to raise the alarm when problems occur at its car factories, allowing the team to work out what has gone wrong and where.
You cannot error-proof your life. But you can seek to improve. And if all else fails, looking at problems in different ways might help. Your mistake may seem big now, but history has bigger ones. In 1867, Russia sold Alaska to America for just $7.2 million — a price far lower than its real value, which was a much bigger mistake than any of yours.
28. What can we learn from Lee’s story
A. Efforts matter on the road to success
B. Originality may come along by mistake.
C. Good luck results from good preparations.
D. Small mistakes can bring about big disasters.
29. Why did Katharine Graham make many unnecessary mistakes in the beginning
A. She was irresponsible. B. She was unconfident.
C. She was inexperienced. D. She was unconcerned.
30. What is stressed by mentioning Toyota’s workers
A. Taking risks to pursue excellence.
B. Checking production lines carefully
C. Having ways to warn of problems.
D. Doing things differently after failures.
31. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean
A. Avoiding mistakes is impossible.
B. Correcting mistakes is beneficial.
C. Regretting mistakes is meaningless.
D. Apologizing for mistakes is necessary.
D
Cooler, higher places may not be very welcoming to some hummingbirds (蜂鸟) trying to escape rising temperatures and other effects of climate change. Anna’s hummingbirds live no higher than about 2,600 meters above sea level. If the birds attempt to expand (扩大) their range to include higher altitudes (海拔), they may struggle to fly well in the thinner air, researchers reported in the Journal of Experimental Biology.
These hummingbirds have expanded their range in the past. Once only found in Southern California, the birds now live as far north as Vancouver, says Austin Spence, an ecologist at the University of California, Davis. That expansion is probably because of climate change and people using feeders to attract hummingbirds, he says.
Spence and colleagues collected 26 Anna’s hummingbirds from different altitudes in the bird’s natural range in California. The team transported the birds to a place about 1,200 meters above sea level and measured their metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate when hovering (盘旋). After relocating the hummingbirds to a field station at an altitude of 3,800 meters, the researchers let the birds rest for at least 12 hours and then measured that rate again.
The rate was 37 percent lower, on average, at the higher altitudes, even though the birds should have been working harder to fly in the thinner air. At higher altitudes, hovering, which takes a lot of energy compared with other forms of flight, is more challenging and requires even more energy, Spence says. The decrease in metabolic rate shows that the birds’ hovering performance was suffering, he says “Low oxygen and low air pressure may be holding them back as they try to move upward.”
Additional work is needed to see whether the birds might be able to better adjust (适应) if given weeks or months to adapt to the conditions at gradually higher altitudes.
32. What factor may have contributed to the expansion of Anna’s Hummingbirds’ range
A. Human use of feeders. B. A lack of food sources.
C. A decrease in temperature. D. A shift in migration patterns.
33. How did scientists study the effects of high altitude on hummingbirds
A. By monitoring their feeding behaviors.
B. By comparing their different forms of flight.
C. By measuring their metabolic rate while hovering.
D. By observing their adaptability to a new environment.
34. Which best describes Anna’s hummingbirds’ hovering performance at higher altitudes
A. Energetic. B. Recovered.
C. Unaffected. D. Weakened.
35. What further research might be conducted about Anna’s hummingbirds
A. Studying the changes in their hunting methods.
B. Recording their numbers over an extended period.
C. Examining their ability to get used to higher altitudes.
D. Investigating the influence of other bird species on their range.

Ask the library if you can be a “book pal" to a younger child, read during storytime, or offer help with handmade activities. 40 Others need kids to volunteer to read advance reader copies (ARCs) of books that haven't been published yet and advise the library on whether they should buy the book.
For them, eBooks are easy to buy.
There are also computers to use for free.
You can stay all day while you learn knowledge.
Librarians can also make great book suggestions.

I was born small, which often left me feeling unconfident. During my second year of high school, my family moved to a different city. Getting used to life as a new kid has always been difficult for me, and this move made it more challenging. In my new school, I felt physically and mentally uneasy. Other students had already built friendships, leaving me without a friend.
Besides, I found English learning boring and didn’t know what to do during English classes. So, I spent my free time drawing because that was what I usually did when I was alone.
I still recall the first day in the school dining hall. While waiting in line for food, I heard a group of students excitedly discussing an upcoming English drama show for freshmen. As I passed by, they glanced at me with surprise. “He looks so small,” someone said in a low voice. My face burned with embarrassment and I bent my head. Pretending not to hear them, I slipped into the farthest seat available and had my meal alone.
In my first English class, I sat at my desk, staring blankly at the book. The letters and words seemed to dance confusingly across the page and laugh at me. Losing interest quickly, I began drawing on the book. A few minutes later, my English teacher, Mr. Frank — a kind man — walked up to me.
“Nice drawing,” he said gently. “You know, language is also an art form; it carries its own charm (魅力) and beauty. I believe you could find English attractive if you discover where to begin.”

根据第四段“As soon as my dad and I realized the big influence it had on her spirit, we were playing music all day.” (To lift her mother's spirit)
根据第一段“Errors can be gateways to new ideas. In 1888, Lee Kum Sheung,
a young cook in southern China, forgot the oyster soup he was cooking until it became thick and sticky. Once Lee discovered how tasty the soup was, he started selling it in bottles. That lucky mistake made his family later the fourth-richest one in Hong Kong.
根据第三段中“Some mistakes happen for a lack of experience. Katharine
Graham made endless errors that could have been avoided after she became the publisher of the Washington Post overnight, following her husband’s sudden death.
根据第五段中“That may mean having a process in place to signal when
things have gone wrong. Workers on Toyota’s production lines, for example, can press a button to raise the alarm when problems occur at its car factories, allowing the team to work out what has gone wrong and where.
根据最后一段中划线句子后文“But you can seek to improve. And if all else
fails, looking at problems in different ways might help. Your mistake may seem big now, but history has bigger ones. 故选A。
根据第二段“That expansion is probably due to climate change and people using feeders to attract hummingbirds, he says.(他说,这种扩张可能是由于气候变化和人们使用喂食器来吸引蜂鸟)”可知,人类使用喂食器是让蜂鸟扩大飞行范围的原因之一,故选A。
根据第三段“The team transported the birds to a place about 1,200 meters above sea level and measured their metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate when hovering (盘旋). After relocating the hummingbirds to a field station at an altitude of 3,800 meters, the researchers let the birds rest for at least 12 hours and then measured that rate again.(研究小组将这些鸟运送到海拔约1200米的鸟舍,并测量它们悬停时的代谢率。在将蜂鸟安置到海拔3800米的野外观测站后,研究人员让这些鸟休息至少12小时,然后再次测量这一速度)”可知,科学家通过测量蜂鸟在盘旋时的新陈代谢率来研究高海拔对蜂鸟的影响。故选C。
34. D推理判断题。根据第四段“The rate was 37 percent lower, on average, at the higher altitudes, even though the birds should have been working harder to fly in the thinner air. At higher altitudes, hovering, which takes a lot of energy compared with other forms of flight, is more challenging and requires even more energy, Spence says. The decrease in metabolic rate shows that the birds’ hovering performance was suffering, he says “Low oxygen and low air pressure may be holding them back as they try to move upward.”(在高海拔地区,这一比率平均要低37%,尽管鸟类在稀薄的空气中应该更加努力地飞行。斯宾塞说,在更高的高度,与其他形式的飞行相比,悬停需要大量的能量,这更具挑战性,需要更多的能量。代谢率的下降表明这些鸟的悬停性能受到了影响,他说:“低氧和低气压可能会阻碍它们向上移动。”)”可知,蜂鸟在高海拔的盘旋性能是减弱的,故选D。
35. C推理判断题。根据最后一段“Additional work is needed to see whether the birds might be able to better adjust (适应) if given weeks or months to adapt to the conditions at gradually higher altitudes.(如果给予它们几周或几个月的时间来适应海拔逐渐升高的环境,它们是否能够更好地适应,还需要进一步的研究)”可知,安娜的蜂鸟适应更高海拔的能力需要进一步研究。故选C。
36--40 CDFBG

When it comes to the time, It would be a great choice to workout before breakfast or after supper. No matter how busy you are, you can make full use of your free time to exercise. Moreover, you don’t have to pay to exercise in the gym.Why not try outdoor activities on a playground or in a park Both are free and perfect for jogging, Tai Chi, or other simple exercises. Additionally, inviting family or friends to join you can make it more enjoyable and easier to stick with. Just remember to wear comfortable clothes and proper shoes to avoid injury.

Encouraged by his words, I began to change my attitude towards English learning. I started to focus more attentively on English classes, following Mr. Frank’s instructions with great care. I discovered the charm of how individual letters could form meaningful words. Although the progress was slow, that slight improvement still brought me some hope. Mr. Frank was always ready to offer me guidance whenever necessary. Gradually, I developed a deep admiration for English. I became more active in speaking up and communicating with my classmates. This new-found enthusiasm made me more outgoing and open-minded, and I even made some new friends.
“Why don’t you draw a poster for the English drama show ” Mr. Frank said to me. Excited and nervous, I accepted. It was a good chance to contribute with my artistic skills. Over the next few days, I drew colorful posters combining text and pictures. The process helped me remember vocabulary and grammar points better. To my delight, Mr. Frank praised my work and selected one poster for the show. Seeing my artwork displayed in the school gave me a strong sense of belonging. Thanks to Mr. Frank’s encouragement and trust, I discovered the beauty of English and found the confidence to express myself.

Text 10
W: Hello, everyone. I know most of you want to be singers, but I’m afraid to say, it’s all hard work. However, the rewards are beyond anything else, so it’s a fair deal. If you have got a good voice, then treasure it. Don’t be anxious if it does get hurt—it’s impressive how it’ll recover. The important thing is to use it. Get out the campus and take every chance you can to sing in public. This experience will also help to feed and build your ambition to go on, to be better. Singing on stage to an appreciative audience is as good as life gets. And for those who don’t like public performance, if you’ve got a good voice—then maybe you’ll be like my friend Diana. Although she got over most of her anxiety about performing in public a few years ago, she still prefers studio singing, performing directly for CDs and so on. Nobody really sees her outside her home and the studio. Even warming up her voice for a recording performance is something she does in private, making noises while sitting in her car outside the studio building. I think she’s alarmed a few passers-by in her time!
