B
  (2025·宜昌高一上期中)In December 2004, I had just become a
professional photographer and was working on a project about
communities who live on the sea, known as sea nomads (海上游牧民
族).I was living with members of the Chao-Ley tribe (部落) on a
small island in southern Thailand. We didn’t share a language and relied
on body language to communicate.
I went out to sea with them regularly. One morning, I was due to set
out with a group of six Chao-Ley fishermen in a small boat. The sea looked
different, with the water totally still.
About 20 minutes after we left and a few miles out in the open sea,
one of the fishermen pointed to a small white spot far in the distance. It
was getting bigger and bigger very quickly. This was a tsunami wave
speeding through the ocean.
Usually, the deeper the water, the weaker the wave. But we
weren’t out far enough to be safe, nor close enough to shore to make it
back in time.We were stuck.Fear began to show in my eyes.
The captain told the six of us where to sit, so we would balance out
the boat.My camera was in my backpack.I wanted to take photos of the
scene, but I couldn’t.Any movement would unbalance the
boat.Suddenly there was a huge noise. The wave hit the boat, but in a
flash the skilled captain managed to swerve (突然转向) us up and onto
the wave. Then the boat moved from the tip of the wave down into safe
waters. Our eyes and mouths were wide open, and everyone let out heavy
sighs. The captain had saved us all.
Surviving gave me a deep understanding of how important life can
be.I’ve been going back to Southeast Asia almost every year since. The
photography project has become a thank-you to the people who saved my
life. The picture I wanted to take on the boat remains “the one that got
away” — I think every photographer has one.But mine changed my life.

C
(2025·晋城高一上月考)A major storm moving through Northern
California on Thursday dropped heavy snow and record rain, flooding
some areas, after killing two people and knocking out power to hundreds
of thousands in the Pacific Northwest.
Forecasters warned the risk of flooding and rockslides would
continue, and scores of flights were canceled (取消) at San
Francisco’s airport.In Washington, more than 204, 000 people —
mostly in the Seattle area — remained without power.
The National Weather Service extended (延长) a flood watch into
Saturday for areas north of San Francisco as the area was influenced by
this season’s strongest weather phenomenon (现象) — which forms
over an ocean and flows through the sky over land. The system went
ashore Tuesday as a “bomb cyclone (炸弹气旋)”, which occurs
when a cyclone builds up rapidly. It brought about strong winds that
knocked trees onto roads, vehicles and homes, killing at least two
people in Washington.
Communities in Washington opened warming centers offering free
Internet and device charging. Some medical clinics closed because of
power outages.
Santa Rosa saw 6.5 inches of rain in the last 24 hours, marking the
wettest day on record since 1998.Worse still, the Sonoma County
Airport, in the wine country north of San Francisco, got more than 11
inches within the last 48 hours and Venado had about 12.7 inches in the
same period.
In nearby Forestville, one person was hurt when a tree fell on a
house.Small landslides were reported across the North Bay, including
one on State Route 281 on Wednesday that caused a car crash.Daniela
Alvarado said calls to her and her father’s Sonoma County-based tree
business have nearly doubled in recent days, with people asking for
clearing trees.“We feel sad, scared, but also ready for action,”
Alvarado said.

  (2025·大连滨城联盟高一上期中)Rogues (疯狗浪), called
“extreme storm waves” by scientists, are large, unexpected, and
dangerous waves that are at least twice as high as the other waves around
them, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA).These abnormal waves, which happen every day and all
over the world, are highly unpredictable and can destroy ships that meet
with them.
Rogue waves appear to form when large rough waves pass through
one another, forming huge walls of water. However, why and where
they appear is unclear. But using 700 years’ worth of ocean data
including historical records and data from buoys (浮标) in 158
locations around the world, researchers have now created a system for
predicting these “huge beasts”.
The system used AI to assess various elements that might lead to
rogue waves. The team trained a network using historical wave data. This
generated (产生) a system that learned the causes of rogue waves by
itself and could work to predict them. But the AI’s methods were hidden
in a black box. This means scientists couldn’t know how the AI did its
work.So H fner’s team used a different machine learning method that
provides an equation (综合体) when given data, rather than just a
single prediction, helping the researchers to understand how the AI
reached its predictions.
“Our study shows that abnormal waves happen all the time.In fact,
we collected 100,000 waves in our data set that can be named as rogue
waves by definition (定义),” H fner said. This system effectively
shows the sign of a rogue wave, H fner added, and can better protect
ships from being destroyed as they sail around the world.Ship companies
can use the device with the system to predict when and where rogue waves
might appear to seek an alternative course.

flooding every year according to a 2023 report by the World Bank.
On Wednesday, at least 17 of the country’s 64 districts (地

from the natural disaster.Government officials said at least 36 people had

Sylhet is among the worst affected, with several areas without
electricity.“Many people are in great need of food and drinking
water,” said Enam Ahmed, 45, living in the worst-hit Sunmaganj
district.“There is water everywhere but no drinking water.Flood shelters
are filled with people but they are not getting enough food,” he said.
The situation in Bangladesh has been worsened by rainwater falling
down from the nearby hills of India’s Meghalaya state, which received
more than 970 mm of rain on Sunday, according to a government report.
“The flood situation in the three Barak valley districts continues to
be very serious.Army rescuers have evacuated thousands of trapped
people to safe places.14 rescue teams with more than 70 boats and over
400 men have been pressed into action in the heavily flooded districts,”
said a local flood control official.About 5.5 million people have been
displaced, about 3.7 million of whom are staying in government-run
temporary (临时的) shelters on higher ground.
Locals in the flood-affected areas said they had never seen such
serious floods before.

of the worst floods in over a century, leaving thousands without food,
water and supplies.During the flood, many heroes arose, one of whom
was Santosh, a young man who owned a take-out restaurant in Chennai.
When the first flood hit in November, he got a call from a company
called Naga Rava. The company asked him to prepare 5,000 packets of
food and give them to the flood victims. He, with his partners, took the

of his way to help the affected people. We, while living here, had not
