Step 1|
GOING POSITIVE
I always wanted to look like the slim girls on TV even though I knew
that it was impossible.I worried about my weight and tried every new diet
I read about online.I tried no-fat, low-fat, 5∶2, only bananas, no
bananas — I almost went bananas, too.
Then I read an article that said instead of asking “Am I fat?” I
should be asking “Am I fit?” [1]I had no idea a letter could make such
a difference! Once I started thinking about fitness rather than weight,
things began to change.Instead of saying “I want to lose three kilos”, I
would say “I want to run two kilometres in eight minutes” or “I want
to be able to do 30 push-ups”.Rather than cutting out the foods I
enjoyed, I added healthy foods to my meals.I could still have a burger
now and then, but I would add a salad or an apple.
[2]Finally, I stopped comparing myself with actresses and models
and looking for things that were wrong with my face or body. Instead, I
made a list of the things I liked about myself.By being positive about
myself and my body, I became both happier and healthier.
1. 第一段中使用了让步状语从句(even though I knew that ...)和定
语从句(every new diet I read about online)等高级句式,显示了作者
3. 第二、三段运用了定语从句(an article that ...; the foods I
enjoyed; things that ...; the things I liked ...)、条件状语从句
(Once I started ...)
asking ...; stopped comparing myself ...; By being positive about
myself and my body ...)
Then, instead of, Rather than, Finally,
Instead, make a difference

A
After years of pounding my
knees and ankles in dashes and the long jump, pain ended my decades of
track and field competition. But how do you live without the adrenaline
(肾上腺素) of racing? That’s simple. You just become sensible at
age sixty and turn to competitive swimming! Suddenly, the pounding
was gone, and so was the pain. However, in less than a month, I was
fed up with pool laps and no sights. Now what?
A friend in the Annapolis Striders had the answer. This marathoner
said he had stayed fit by intense walking while healing from a running
injury.“Try it,” he said.“It’s even a competitive sport.” Sure
enough, a certain kind of energetic walking is a 100-year-old Olympic
event called racewalking.
I took to this sport immediately.I didn’t have to enter races to be a
racewalker. However, those who compete must follow rules and must
please numerous hard-eyed judges or be disqualified (DQ).But for
me, doing it was enough. It took me many months to become smooth in
the style.I had lost a sport but had found another.
Then came a disaster.Lower back pain had arrived.“Surgery is a
last solution,” I was told. Dr Clifford Solomon, super-surgeon of
Annapolis, Maryland, had the cure.It left me with full leg control,
but a flopping (耷拉的) foot.I would be able to jog, but not meet
racewalk rules.By chance I tuned the TV to an old movie showing Fred
Astaire dancing up a storm. From the ankle down, his feet swiveled (旋
转) in the very motion I needed.I turned off the TV and went to the
Senior Center.
As the only man among twenty-nine students in the tap dancing class
I learned that grandmothers are programmed to care for any wounded
creature. Some paid particular attention to this seventy-five-year-old
patient, staying after class to guide and inspire. With examples,
humor, encouragement and advice, they taught me to tap dance. They
cured my flopping foot.
Within a year, I was competing well enough to enter the USA Track
and Field Nationals in Boston and break the American record for the 3,
000-meter racewalk.And now, at eighty-six, I’m still competing and
often thinking of those ladies.

Many of us are lucky
enough to have some degree of choice over what we eat.But are the
decisions we make about our diet as free as we assume?
It appears we’re hugely influenced by other people — especially
those closest to us — when it comes to what we eat.Research has found
that the closer and stronger two people’s connection is, the more
control they have over each other’s food choices. This means social
signals generally encourage us to eat more.Being around healthy eaters
may guide you to eat healthier as well, though.Eating habits are also
affected by what we see.“There is proof that, if you see pictures of
food, that visual stimulation can inspire your desire to eat,” says a UK
scientist, Suzanne Higgs.
Social media is one place where visual and social signals
meet.Evidence shows if friends in your social network post regularly
about particular types of food, it could lead you to copy them, for better
or for worse. And research indicates that social media might be changing
our relationship with food, making us think differently about what we
eat.“If all your friends on social media are posting pictures of themselves
consuming fast food, it’s going to set a norm that eating fast food is
what people do,” says Higgs.
Research suggests we’re more likely to be attracted by photos of fast
food, especially some rich in saturated fat (饱和脂肪), which can
make us feel good, says Ethan Pancer, a professor in Canada.Humans
are biologically prepared to seek out high-calorie food — an ability that
helped our ancestors survive when they searched for food.
“Healthier foods are often seen as boring in comparison, and
processed food is considered ‘cool’,” a researcher from France,
Tina Tessitore, adds that, “In advertising, you see unhealthy food in
social settings — people having a barbeque with friends, for example,
while healthy food usually focuses more on the nutritional value. If you
saw friends eating salad together, it wouldn’t seem so true.” All of the
findings are bothering researchers about the effects of social media,
whether good or bad.
