Step 1|
10 September 2018
Dear Worried Friend,
You wrote that you are very worried about your friend, Chen
Lei.[1]I understand quite well that you are anxious and feel terrible. You
think that your friend plays computer games too often and spends too much
time online.
I recommend that you talk to your friend about his behaviour.[2]It is
not unusual for teenagers of your generation to be attracted to computer
games and the online world. But spending too much time online is
unhealthy and [3] makes it very difficult to focus on other things in
life. Some students even become addicted to the Internet and cannot
concentrate on school and family life.I think you should encourage your
friend to try new hobbies. Why not discuss the problem together? I am
sure he will listen to you, since you are his good friend.
All the best,
Susan Luo
[1]句中quite well是副词短语作状语;that you are anxious and
  [2]此句为“It is+形容词+for sb to do sth” 结构,It作形式主
  [3]此处是“make+it+形容词+to do sth”结构,it作形式宾
You wrote that ...; I understand quite well
that ...; You think that ...,由此可以看出,作者在建议信的开头,
(1)I recommend that you talk to your friend about his behaviour.
(2)I think you should encourage your friend to try new hobbies.
(3)Why not discuss the problem together?
(It is not unusual ...to be
attracted ...);动词-ing短语作主语(spending too much time online
is ...);it作形式宾语( ...makes it very difficult to focus on ...),
5. 第二段中focus on, become addicted to, concentrate on等词汇生动

A
I was taught at a young age to be afraid
rather than to experience life.Don’t ride a bike because you might get hit
by a car.Don’t swim because you might drown. That’s why I was
initially afraid to approach others. They might say no — how could I live
with that rejection (拒绝)?
A book changed me.Near the end of the book, the writer suggested
trying out what I had just read but to pretend it was like the training game
in a sport — when the games didn’t count. When my teams would lose
formal games, I couldn’t bear to watch. But when they lost in the
training game, I didn’t care.
I don’t know why the suggestion resonated with me.But I knew this
new way of thinking worked for me.It gave me power to know the results
didn’t matter because this was the exhibition game when I was practicing
what I had learned before the real games started.
I discovered there were other ways to use this new tool.It allowed me
to have a successful sales career, even though I heard the word “no”
hundreds of times. It was part of the business, but I didn’t let it get me
down.I turned a negative into a positive by reasoning that every time I
heard the word “no”, it meant I was one step closer to “yes”.It’s
amazing how powerful you feel when you remove the fear that stops you
from going after what you want in life.
I still do my sales job, and we have a lot of high-school and college
students working at the company.I will pass on the advice that I learned
many years ago and encourage them to use that idea for whatever they
want to achieve.

Every school has students who
stand out for their abilities and their eagerness to learn. In Mexico, a
school created a program to work with them. In 2019, both teachers
Lotta Andersson and John Rennie got the idea to provide learning
opportunities for students with a hunger for knowledge. They are English
coordinators (协调员) in the school. “We want to have a program to
inspire students who really have the abilities and the interests to learn more
and continue accepting challenges,” Andersson said during a recent
interview.
Students in the program, which was called Learning Challenges,
met with the teachers about once a month. Andersson and Rennie would
help us choose research topics. We then worked with the teachers to find
books, interview subjects and Internet sources. While in Learning
Challenges, I gave presentations on European culture and the fashion
industry.
When asked what skills students had formed in the program, which
ended in June 2020 because of the limits of a common disease,
Andersson said, “They had learned to ask questions, be more open-
minded and see things from different angles (角度). Also, they
mastered the skills — reflecting more, acting actively, and learning not
to put limits on themselves.”
A student, Yihane Abed, conducted research on the sun, the
moon, stars, planets, etc, while in Learning Challenges. “The
skills I developed were teamwork and the ways to do research and give a
good presentation,” she said.
Andersson and Rennie continue to help students pursue their love of
learning. “The program doesn’t exist formally, but as an important
part of the culture at school, it is still needed,” Andersson said.
“There is much more difference, not only for students who need extra
help, but also for those who are higher achievers.”
