(2025·三明两校协作高一上期中)For the past few years, I’ve taken my vacation in the spring. One April I planned to visit a friend in Nepal who had lived in the country for over 15 years.
I flew into Kathmandu and spent a week visiting sites, and on Friday, 24 April 2015, we went to Lukla, a mountain town to the northeast. My friend had worked there before. We visited a nearby village on Saturday. We were served a delicious pancake and endless cups of milk tea; villagers made small talk and caught up with each other. After a couple of hours, my friend and I made a polite exit (离去) for a coffee break across the dirt path to our lodging, a house he had lived in while working in Lukla years ago.
As we sat in the kitchen taking a rest, I wondered why it felt like an underground was running under the village. As the sound started to shake, I looked out of the window at the passers-by and thought it felt like a truck was driving by — impossible in this village.I looked at my friend and he said off-handedly:“It’s an earthquake.” Before I could ask questions, he began shouting to get out of the house.By the time I was running down the dirt path, I couldn’t run straight.
Away from buildings, we lowered our bodies near a low wall, and unbelievably before our eyes, walls and buildings fell.In front of us the end wall of the house we slept in collapsed (倒塌), the stones dislodging (移开) and falling to the ground. In a matter of seconds, every house in the village was damaged with walls either seriously cracked, or partially or completely damaged.
In the days and weeks that followed we checked in with friends and shared stories of where we were and what we were doing. The event was so wide-reaching that it was difficult to understand except through personal stories.

(2025·重庆长寿中学高一上月考)As a shift in the polar vortex (极地涡旋) swept across much of the US, many people in the country were hit with a sudden snap of cold.Heavy ice and snow coupled with fallen trees caused the outages in major cities, with companies unable to tell their customers when power will be back on.
Polar vortices were noticed long ago.But the first known use of the term “polar vortex” was in a magazine in 1853.Polar vortices are present year-round, but we don’t hear about them until they cause problems. They maintain freezing temperatures at the North and South poles by moving in tight counter-clockwise (逆时针方向) patterns.Polar vortices grow stronger in winter and weaken in summer. They are kept in place at the poles by another atmospheric current (大气流) called the jet stream (急流).However, when the jet streams weaken, the cold winds of the polar vortex are pushed southwards and it is during this time that people begin to pay attention!
In Texas, roads froze over, causing six traffic deaths, and many schools were shut down.People are not the only Earthlings to struggle with the cold.Crops and animals are also freezing. This could have major consequences, especially if herds of cattle die.If snow blocks cattle, the animals can’t reach basic necessities like food and fresh water.
On a brighter note, some Texas cities were more prepared than others. For instance, Amarillo, which is located in North Texas, so they are more accustomed to colder temperatures.Amarillo is outstanding because the city was redesigned to stand up to strong winter storms.Officials have spread out fire stations to increase coverage of first responders, employed modified dump trucks for clearing ice, and upgraded civic centers to provide protection during storms.Hopefully, other Texas cities will follow the good example set by Amarillo!
28.What does the underlined word “outages” in paragraph 1 refer to?( )
A.Traffic jams. B.Snow removal.
C.Power cuts. D.Traffic accidents.
29.What can we learn about polar vortices?( )
A.They grow stronger in summer. B.They are affected by jet streams.
C.They were first observed in 1853. D.They move in a clockwise direction.
30.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?( )
A.The definition of the polar vortex. B.The characteristics of the polar vortex.
C.The ways to deal with the polar vortex. D.The serious impact made by the polar vortex.
31.Why is Amarillo impressive?( )
A.Because it is located in the north of Texas.
B.Because it sets an example for other cities.
C.Because it has been upgraded and modernized on a regular basis.
D.Because it has taken effective measures to resist winter storms.

(2025·吉林一中高一上期中)On 26 December 2004, an earthquake along the Indian Ocean caused a huge tsunami that killed thousands of people in Asia and East Africa. However, wildlife officials at Sri Lanka’s Yala National Park reported no mass animal deaths.Yala National Park is home to hundreds of wild animals.
Some researchers believe the animals at the park were able to sense the earthquake and moved to higher ground before the earthquake hit.Animals have good senses that help protect themselves from being hunted by their natural enemies. It is thought that their senses might also help them sense the coming disasters.Several countries have done research on the prediction of earthquakes by animals. There are two theories about how animals may be able to sense earthquakes. One theory is that animals sense the earth’s shake. The other is that they can sense changes in the air. However, so far there has been no strong evidence about how animals may be able to sense earthquakes.
Other researchers are skeptical (怀疑) about using animals for earthquake predictions. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) officially states, “Changes in animal behaviors cannot be used to predict earthquakes.Even though there have been many cases of unusual animal behaviors before earthquakes, a connection between a specific behavior and an earthquake has not been made.Because of their fine senses, animals can often feel the earthquake at its earliest stages before the humans. That’s why people say that the animal knew the earthquake was coming. But animals can also change their behaviors for many other reasons. If an earthquake can shake millions of people, it is likely that a few of their pets will, by chance, be acting strangely before the earthquake.”
Although scientists disagree on whether animal behaviors can be used to predict earthquakes, they all agree that it is possible for animals to sense changes in the environment before humans.Researchers around the world are continuing to study the connection between animal behaviors and earthquakes. It is hoped that these studies will help to predict earthquakes.
32.What can we know about animals’ senses?( )
A.They are not reliable. B.They can change the environment.
C.They can protect animals in some ways. D.They can prevent animals acting strangely.
33.What does the USGS mean?( )
A.Animals change behaviors for many reasons.
B.Animal behaviors can predict earthquakes.
C.Animal behaviors are closely related to earthquakes.
D.Our pets can’t sense earthquakes.
34.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to scientists’ study?( )
A.Disappointed. B.Hopeful.
C.Uninterested. D.Skeptical.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?( )

B.Why Animals Change Behaviors
C.Can Animals Predict Earthquakes?

M:I missed the weather report this morning. Did you hear it?
W:Yes. It said,“Today is partly cloudy with a strong wind from the northwest. But tomorrow you’ll see sunshine.”
(Text 2)
W:Father’s Day is on this weekend. Don’t forget to give our dad a call on Sunday.
M:Oh, thanks for reminding me. I can never remember if I go out with my classmates that day.
(Text 3)
W:When did you fall into the habit of drinking coffee, in high school or at college?
M:Neither. I began it after I worked as a secretary here because I had to work extra hours.
(Text 4)
W:What do you think of the movie we saw last night?
M:I have read the novel about it. Well, to be honest, I don’t think I will see the movie twice.
(Text 5)
M:Mary, I heard that Sam is forming his own band. What’s the name of the band?
W:Stay Away from the World. It will be a great success. Sam is very good at playing the guitar. I know you play the drums well, so you can join his band.
(Text 6)
W:Let’s take a coffee break, shall we?
M:I wish I could, but I can’t.
W:What keeps you so busy? You’ve been sitting there for hours. You’ve got to walk around. You can’t just stay in front of the computer forever.
M: Well, I’m really very busy with my work. I’ve got to finish this report. Mr Smith needs it by noon. I don’t want to be punished for not finishing my work on time.
W:I understand that, but you’d feel better if you took a break, even for just a short while.
(Text 7)
M:Why am I being charged 10 dollars for a movie that I never ordered?
W:Sir, according to the information on the computer, you spent Monday evening watching the movie Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
M:Well, it is wrong. I was at a great concert that night.
W:Well, this wouldn’t be the first time that the information is wrong. Just a moment, please. Sir, you shouldn’t be charged 10 dollars. But you have to pay $2 for checking it.
M:You can’t do that! You can’t charge me for a mistake that you made!
W:I’m terribly sorry, sir. But that’s the rule.
(Text 8)
W:Because of all the earthquakes and fires, people living in California like me are crazy.
M:That’s it, but big earthquakes happen only once in a while.
W:That is already too many. A big earthquake is a terrible disaster for the locals.
M:You’re right. There have indeed happened a lot of fires.
W:A recent fire destroyed 85 houses, killing 11 people and leaving more than 200 homeless.
M:Still, it’s safer than Florida and Texas.
W:Florida doesn’t have earthquakes and has less fires.
M:But Florida just has hurricanes every year from June to October.
W:But most of those hurricanes are harmless.
M:Excuse me. Hurricane Andrew destroyed 30,000 houses!
(Text 9)
W:Hi, George! Welcome back from summer vacation. Did you have a good time in Guizhou?
M:Yes, I did. It was everything I expected, and more. How about you? Did you go anywhere?
W:Yes, as a matter of fact I did. I spent a week in Shanghai trying to get a job there.
M:Shanghai is such a wonderful city! You’ll really enjoy living there.
W:I’m not so sure. Shanghai has a lot going for it, but I like Beijing too.
M:What do you like best about Shanghai?
W:Shanghai is the business center of China, so there are lots of jobs, and there’s always something new. It’s more modern than Beijing and generally a convenient place to live.
M:Why would you want to stay in Beijing?
W:For one thing, Beijing has a sense of history. You know, there’s no Great Wall in Shanghai!
M:That’s for sure. There’s no Forbidden City or Summer Palace, either.
W:For another thing, I think people are very friendly in Beijing.
M:Yes, I can’t agree more. People from Beijing are really friendly!
W:But I’ve heard that men from Shanghai will help their wives with housework. That’s the very quality I admire!
(Text 10)
I like to do sports and play video games in my free time. Sometimes, I play video games by myself. I also invite friends over to play. I really like games that deal with sports, role-playing, adventure, but I don’t buy all games since I know that certain types of games are not suitable for children. Playing video games helps me reduce stress and kill some time, but it also can be addictive. A lot of people are concerned that people waste too much time playing games and do not get enough exercise because they sit in front of a computer or TV too much. Also, some people say that children as well as adults tend to shut themselves away and fail to develop relationships with others. I think if you control how much you play them — I mean, not playing them too much — then playing video games isn’t a bad way to spend some of your time.

When I worked as a nurse, I was on day duty while my workmates were on night duty.On one shift, I sensed something just before going off duty at 11 a.m.I put down the tray (托盘) on the table and suddenly it fell off the table. At first I thought I had accidentally knocked it over, but then I felt the whole building shaking and heard patients were screaming.
I realized that an earthquake was happening.I quickly caught hold of a nearby patient, who was terribly frightened and pushed her under a bed.And then, I got under another bed myself. As soon as the earthquake stopped, I decided to try and get the patient safely outside.I carried her out and helped her down to the grassland, where several other people had gathered.
Afraid that my other workmates were in danger, I went back inside the building again. When I met Lucy, our ward sister (护士长), I found her patient couldn’t walk.We made a seat for the patient by linking our hands and arms, and carried her outside together. We went back through the building to check no one was left behind in our ward (病房).
Just then, we saw that a man doctor was calling for volunteers to go down to other wards with him to help more people. So we went together. The doctor went ahead of us and found one of the nurses partially covered with rubble (碎石),luckily still alive.Suddenly, the aftershock (余震) struck and the doctor ordered us to leave. The brave doctor intended to stay alone and risk his own life to save the nurse.

Later in the afternoon, I had time to look around and saw some destroyed buildings. My beautiful workplace lay beyond recognition, even some in ruins. At the sight of this, I felt a weight in my chest.Suddenly, the gentle wind danced around me, which made me thought of all the people surviving the earthquake with our help.It was our teamwork that made a difference.I held the firm belief that some day in the future my workplace would come back to life and take on a new look, where we would continue working together to save more patients.
