During my senior year in college I came across “Private Voice Instruction”.As in singing lessons, I thought,“Why not step outside my comfort zone and give it a try?”
I was careful to sign up for private lessons instead of group lessons because I didn’t want to make a fool of myself by singing in front of other students.
Things went fine until the end of the term when my singing professor brought the shocking news.“By the way, Sean, have you decided which song you want to sing at the recital (演唱会)?”
“That would not be a good idea,” I said. The thought of singing in front of a group made me physically sick.
“Courage, Sean.” I kept rehearsing in my mind.“You’ve got to at least try.”
That dreaded day finally arrived. As I stood in front of the class, all eyes fell upon me.I couldn’t help but think,“How? How in the world did I get myself into this situation?”
Even before I reached the second line, the expressions of excitement on the students’ faces turned to anguish (痛苦).I was so nervous that my body felt as tight as jeans just pulled from the dryer.
Near the end of the song is a really high note.I don’t recall if I hit that note or missed it.All I remember is that a few students were so embarrassed that they couldn’t even look at me.
I finished and sat down quickly.Silence.No one knew what to say.
But do you know what? Although that experience nearly killed me, when I left that classroom, I was so proud of myself.I felt a great sense of personal accomplishment, and I frankly didn’t care what anyone else thought about my high note.I had survived and I was proud of it.

An important part of our lives is discovering what you’re good at.One thing I know for sure is that everyone has a talent, a gift, something they are good at.
After carving a beautiful sculpture, Michelangelo was asked how he was able to do it.He replied by saying that the sculpture was already in the block of rock from the very beginning; he just had to chisel (凿) off everything else around it.
Likewise, Victor Frankl, a famous doctor, taught that we don’t invent our talents in life but rather we discover them.In other words, you are already born with your talents, and you just need to uncover them.
I’ll never forget my experience with finding a talent I never thought I had.
To fulfill Mr Williams’s creative writing assignment for freshman English, I excitedly turned in my first high school paper, entitled “The Old Man and the Fish”.It was the same story my father had often told me at bedtime while I was growing up.I just assumed he had made it up.He didn’t bother telling me he had stolen the plot directly from Ernest Hemingway’s award-winning novel The Old Man and the Sea.I was shocked when my paper was returned with the remarks,“Sounds a bit trite.Like Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.” “Who’s this guy Hemingway?” I thought.“And how come he copied my dad?” That was my poor start to four years of rather boring high school English classes.
It wasn’t until college, when I took a short story class from an amazing professor, that I began to discover my passion for writing. If you can believe it, I even majored in English.Mr Williams would have felt surprised.

Several large companies have begun creating paper bottles to replace glass and plastic ones.Paper bottles aren’t quite ready to go yet, but you may see them appearing on shelves over the next few years.
Companies which sell liquids like drinks or shampoo rely on bottles for their packaging.Usually these bottles are made of plastic or glass. But as customers have become more concerned about the environment, many companies have begun working to develop paper bottles.
Paper bottles have many advantages.Perhaps the most important is that they should be easy to recycle.Paper bottles also weigh less than glass or plastic, meaning they’ll require less energy to produce and to move around.Since paper is soft and easy to mold, companies can design their bottles to take almost any shape they choose.
A company called Paboco has been working with many large companies to develop paper bottles. The companies are creating their own bottle designs, but they’re sharing what they learn, to speed up the development of paper bottle technology.
Clearly, one of the biggest challenges is keeping a paper bottle from leaking. The inside of the bottle needs a special coating to make sure the liquid doesn’t leak through. Many companies are lining their bottles with a thin sheet of plastic.
But even without the plastic, paper bottles aren’t perfect. Most paper bottles use wood pulp, meaning trees need to be cut down to make the bottles. That could harm animals and others who depend on the forests.
There’s still lots of testing to be done before paper bottles can replace glass or plastic panies will need to see how long liquids can be stored in the bottles, and make sure the bottles don’t affect the taste.
But with so many companies working toward the same goal, it’s likely that we can expect to see paper bottles on store shelves in the near future.

34.What’s the author’s attitude to paper bottles’ appearing on shelves?( )
A.Unclear. B.Worried.
C.Confident. D.Doubtful.

One day, after another poor test result, I stayed behind after class, feeling defeated. Mr Green noticed my sadness and came to me with a smile. “Don’t worry, Jack,” he said softly. “Everyone may find something difficult. The important thing is not to give up. Let’s work on this together.”
Mr Green started explaining each concept (概念) more patiently, breaking it down into simpler parts. He used real-life examples to make ideas easy to understand. Every time after class, he would come to my seat and ask me if I understood the lesson. His devotion and encouragement helped me a lot, and slowly, I began to see improvement.
My classmates also played a role in my progress. My best friend, Mike, was good at maths. He offered to study with me during breaks. We would sit in the library, going over problems. He told me to face my mistakes bravely, and his positive attitude influenced me.

C.It turned out a failure. D.Few students watched it.
27.Why did the author feel proud of himself?( )
A.He had hit the high note. B.He had overcome himself.
C.He had conquered the audience. D.He thought he had done a great job.

28.What does the author try to tell us by giving the example of Michelangelo and Victor Frankl?( )
A.We all have our talents. B.It takes hard work to succeed.
C.Great talent leads to great work. D.It’s difficult to finish something great.
29.What can we learn about the story in the author’s paper?( )
A.It was created by himself. B.It was made up by his father.
C.Mr Williams was familiar with it. D.Mr Williams read it for the first time.
30.What does the underlined word “trite” in paragraph 5 probably mean?( )
A.Not popular. B.Not original.
C.Not effective. D.Not common.
31.What can we infer about the author before going to college?( )
A.He had a passion for literature. B.He showed a talent for writing.
C.He was appreciated by Mr Williams. D.He didn’t know much about literature.

32.Why have many companies begun to develop paper bottles?( )
A.To reduce the cost. B.To make more money.
C.To become more famous. D.To protect the environment.
33.In the author’s eyes, paper bottles aren’t perfect because .( )
A.they lead to the loss of forests B.the liquid may leak through them
C.they are not as strong as plastic ones D.they are more expensive than glass ones
34.What’s the author’s attitude to paper bottles’ appearing on shelves?( )
A.Unclear. B.Worried.
C.Confident. D.Doubtful.
35.What would be the best title for the passage?( )
A.Paper Bottles May Produce New Problems
B.Companies Work to Develop Paper Bottles
C.Will Paper Bottles Replace Plastic Ones?
D.Are Paper Bottles Better Than Plastic Ones?
