Whether you call Germany home or are just visiting, going to festivals is a great way to experience the country's culture. Here are the best events to attend.
Karneval, Cologne
Karneval is a 40-day party season which takes place between February and March. The largest and most well-known one of these celebrations in Germany takes place in Cologne. The period sees street parties pop up all across the city. The tradition dates back to medieval (中世纪的) times when people lived under strict rules. However, the Germans are certainly making up for it now.
Frankfurt Book Fair
Held for five days at the Frankfurt Trade Fair grounds in Frankfurt, the event dates back to the 15th century. Today, it is the world's largest trade fair for books and is considered to be the most important one for international deals and trading. While the first three days are restricted (限制) only to professional visitors, the general public can attend on the weekend.
Thuringer Bachwochen: Thuringia Bach Festival
Taking place during the Easter period, this is the largest music festival in Thuringia and has more than 60 concerts in the historic Bach sites. These show the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Each year, the festival opens with a long night of house music. For one evening, more than a hundred public house concerts take place in private living rooms across the state.
Long Night of the Museums, Berlin
The evening sees between 70 and 80 of the city's museums open late for the public to visit. Visitors are given an entrance pass to all the exhibits (展览品) within the area. They can meet interesting guests, and dance the night away to live music, and more. With foods and drinks on offer in many places, it's no wonder this is one of the most popular German festivals.

Denis Law,15 years old, stood at Huddersfield train station;slim and wearing glasses,so small and so inconsequential that the waiting officials from his new club didn't pick him out in the crowd.
"You're Law?" one of them finally realised. "Really?"
Really. That young boy grew into a giant (卓越人物) of the global game. The King,as he would come to be known.Pele said he was the only British player good enough to get in the Brazil team of the day.Bill Shankly called him "the quickest thinking footballer" he had ever seen.
However, this footballing giant's early life was far from easy.He lived with strabismus (斜视),a difficulty focusing on objects in front of him,and this left him open to cruel treatment from other kids.As one of seven children raised in a council flat (市政康租房) just two miles from Pittodrie Stadium,he would watch the football games there whenever money allowed it.He only got his first pair of football boots when he was a teenager. It felt like a dream come true.
On the field,he was slight but competitive. He would close one eye to help his sight.Nobody ever described him as physically impressive, but he was excellent as a player —that's for sure.
So he got off the train at Huddersfield in the mid-1950s and started his football adventure. His manager was Andy Beattie,a former Scotland player who also coached his national team. "The boy's a wonder," Beattie said."Never did I see someone who looked less like a future footballer." Beattie saw something in him, though —hunger, skill and speed.
The Lawman has gone, but his legend lives on.From the overlooked (被忽视的) boy at Huddersfield station to football's"King",he showed greatness isn't about size but heart, skill and determination. He was a playmaker and a goalscorer,a total footballer, loved by his teammates.

Trees, parks, wetlands and green roofs can no longer be seen as a " nice-to-have" aesthetic enhancement (美学提升) but an important part for creating climate-resilient (气候适应性强的),and healthier cities, according to an international paper. The research —which involved experts from 11 countries—found that urban (都市的) greening has many benefits, including cooler streets, cleaner air and water, and improved health.
Global case studies in the paper show how different cities are making nature-based solutions work in practice.Singapore'"s City in Nature"has seen major success with its green corridors and vertical gardens that help reduce heat and support biodiversity (生物多样性).In Cardiff, more than 80,000 trees have been planted as part of the city's One Planet Strategy, while Copenhagen has integrated (结合) green roofs and climate-resilient neighbourhoods to manage flood risk and improve liveability.
According to Professor Prashant Kumar, lead author of the paper, urban greening can be a cost-effective solution to some of our most pressing challenges —from climate change to improving health.Cities like Singapore have shown what's possible. To help cities achieve urban greening, experts are calling for integrated action that includes nature in every step of planning.
Tools like AI,and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are increasingly enabling cities to map environmental risks, inform smarter design and record the long-term impact of city green space. These technological advancements can help support the delivery of urban greening.
Professor Veronica Soebarto,Initiative Lead in Green Urban Futures at the University of Adelaide's Environment Institute, said:"Considering the many benefits of greening, there is no reason not to include it within city planning, designs and developments. With warming climates taking place around the world, urban greening is important in providing relief by cooling the outdoor environment and reducing heat that enters buildings. At the same time,it is a solution that brings nature to cities, positively influencing health, and improving liveability."
8.What is the main purpose of the new research? ______
A. To stress the great benefits of urban greening.
B. To set aesthetic standards for urban greening.
C. To compare the green plans of different cities.
D. To discuss the challenges of building green cities.
9.How does the author develop paragraph 2? ______
A. By listing numbers. B. By showing the study results.
C. By giving examples. D. By using an expert's words.
10.What is the experts' suggestion on urban greening? ______
A. Ask city developers for help.

D. Consider it at every step of city planning.

A new air-powered robot can practically walk right off the 3-D printer. The 3-D printed robot doesn't have any electronic parts. All it needs to move is an air canister (小罐).
Mechanical engineer Yichen Zhai led the work.He and his team at the University of California gave their robot six legs, like an insect. Each leg can move up and down or side to side. The whole thing is made from the same type of plastic.
Air from a canister moves through tiny tubes and chambers (软管和腔室) in the robot's body to power it.As the pressure in each of these chambers changes,it opens and closes different tubes. That moves air into different sets of chambers, and the process starts again. Then, the robot's legs can move forward.
The robot's design is quite interesting, says Perla Maiolino. She wasn't involved (参加) in building it,but she does work on other robots at the University of Oxford. "Making a robot usually involves designing different parts from different materials,"she says."But this one is a single piece made with just one material. And because the design doesn't use any electronics,it works well in water.Such a robot could work in areas where electronics might fail, such as in mines, underwater,or even in space."
However, the new robot isn't quite ready for these hard conditions. The robot has to move faster first, says Zhai. Now,it moves slowly at 4 cm per second. That's a little faster than a snail (蜗牛),but slower than a turtle(乌龟).Zhai and his team are working to make it faster. The team also hopes to add a guiding system or a way for the robot to avoid objects in its way.Right now,it can only move forward in a straight line.
Until the robot gets these improvements,it won't be doing serious work."The robot is like a toy now,"Zhai says. And it can be cheaply and easily 3-D printed. "If people love it,people can make it," he says. "That's enough."
12.What is special about the robot invented by Zhai?______
A. It is the first 3-D printed robot. B. It runs on air not electricity.
C. It moves faster than a turtle. D. It is made of common metal.
13.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the robot?______
A. How it moves. B. Why it is needed.
C. What it looks like. D. Where it can be used.
14.What is Perla Maiolino's attitude toward the robot?______
A. Doubtful. B. Careful. C. Positive. D. Unclear.
15.What can be learned about the robot from the last two paragraphs?______
A. It will attract many kids.
B. It is ready for serious work now.
C. It could become popular among people.
D. It will look like a snail with a guiding system.
