teaching aims
1.语言知识目标: (1)学生能够正确读写及运用以下单词: airmail;fortnight;roof;muddy;textbook;concept;weekly;relevant;remote;weed;adjust;platform;broom;tin;jar;participate;interpreter;otherwise;privilege (2)学生掌握下列词组的意思并能在句子中熟练运用: hear from;(be)dying to;the other day;dry out;dry up
语言技能目标: (1)强化略读、查读等阅读技能,训练通过寻找关键词、主题句等方式更快速并准确地获取和处理文章细节信息的能力。
语言能力目标:增强阅读理解能力;发展借助图片、表格等非语言信息进行语言输出的能力。
4.情感态度价值观目标: (1)帮助学生理解志愿者工作的意义,培养学生在日常生活中乐于助人的爱心。 (2)在小组合作互动中,增强学生的团队合作精神与分享意识。重点难点 
二、Learning aims
1. To learn about Jo’s experience as a volunteer teacher in PNG.
2. To learn to analyze and get the detailed information by skimming and scanning; learn to describe the life of people in PNG and express yourself with pictures in the passage.
3. To learn from the volunteering spirit and develop a good practice of sharing.
三、importance and difficulties
1.importance:a.获取巴布亚新几内亚独立国各部落生活状况和风俗习惯的信息; b.阅读能力的培养和阅读技巧的训练,如精读课文完成表格填空等。
difficulties:a.理解作为志愿者工作的意义,从而树立正确的价值观; b.训练用英语获取信息、处理信息、分析问题和解决问题的能力。
teaching procedure
Step I: Pre-reading
Activity 1
T: Show a picture of Santa Claus and ask students who the man is and what role the man acts.
S: Answer the questions together. Santa Claus is a helper who help others often.
[purpose] It is helpful to introduce the main character Jo who is also a helper in PNG. And Santa Claus is familiar to students, which can arouse their interests.
Activity 2
T: Introduce the character Jo and her friend; show the world map of PNG.
S: Know some general information of the character and the country PNG’s location.
[purpose] To introduce the topic and it is convenient to read the letter to get more details.
Step II: While-reading
Activity 3
T: Now, students let’s go together to know more about Jo’s experience as a helper in PNG. Read the passage by yourselves by skimming and scanning and pay attention to the pictures shown in the passage. Then you can describe the life in the picture with your own words or words you can get in the passage.
S: Read the passage quietly and get the information to describe the life in the picture; express your thoughts freely.
[purpose] To practice the reading skills-- skimming and scanning; to train students to get and deal with the detailed information in the passage and express their own thoughts with pictures which are very vivid.
Activity 4
T: Reread the passage and compare the school in the passage with our school.You can look around to think about it carefully.
S: From various aspects express your opinions freely in different forms.
[purpose] It is related to our life and things around us, which can arouse students’ interests and is easy for them to say something about the differences between the two schools.
Activity 5
T: Reread Jo’s letter and fill in the chart: find or guess reasons for the facts by scanning; have a little discussion about your answers, show your puzzles on the blackboard and try to correct them(please find the basis in the passage).
S: Present your answers on the blackboard and have a discussion and correct them.
[purpose] To practice to get and analyze the information and make students cooperative to solve questions; individuals can make a difference.
Step III: Post-reading
Activity 6 speaking
T: From the letter we can see Jo is indeed a helper to help people in PNG. There are many helpers / volunteers in the world. Let’s see them and read the words together. There’s also a woman called Malala who got the Nobel Peace Prize. Let’s take a good look at it! Then say something about it: Do you want to be a volunteer (a helper) like Jo and the great men? what can you do ?
After speaking, show the symbol of the volunteer and make them know what the hand, the dove stand for.
S: Enjoy and read the words and video together. Then think about the question carefully on your own and express your opinion freely.
[purpose] To educate students to be a helper / volunteer in life using the video about Malala, the words of great person and the symbol of the volunteer; to practice their ability to express their thoughts.

本节课学生积极参与活动,获得了一定的阅读理解文章获取和处理信息的能力和用英语进行思维表达的能力,提升了自己的精神境界,达到了乐于助人的效果。但是本节课的设计还可以更加大胆的放手让学生在充分理解文章信息之后给予充分时间去表达流淌自己的思想,形式可以多样小组话剧表演,个人陈述或两人对话等,充分锻炼学生表达能力,给更多学生展示的机会。
