Flowers, ocean waves, animals, totem (图腾): Sitting in his northeast Beijing studio, Cai
Honghao hammers on a piece of cow leather, bringing to life a new design. Cai, 41, is one of
China’s few leather crafters.
He began crafting leather six years ago when he was the creative director of an
advertising company. Fed up with the stress of his job, Cai declined to renew his contract last
year. He is now devoted to leather crafting. “It’s great fun as I try new designs and make it
more challenging.”
Each work undergoes many stages, from drawing pictures on paper to coloring the
crafted leather. He does it all himself, but sometimes his wife helps. The back of the leather
should be pasted on paper to prevent changing the shape, and then covered with tape to seal it
during coloring. Cai also sprays water on the surface to make the leather easier to work. His
70-square-meter studio is filled with leather and tools. Pens are used to carve the outline of the
pattern, while different machines create the shallow holes on the leather. The patterns become
vivid under Cai’s hammers and shaping tools. For a bag or belt, he also sews pieces of leather
together, and a work can take a week to several months, with the prices up to tens of thousands
of yuan.
“It is an extremely complicated and time-consuming process,” he says. His shoulders
can ache after bending over his worktop day and night. “But I enjoy it, and my family are keen
on my art. Otherwise, they would not let me do this fulltime.” Cai hopes to realize the beauty
of ancient Chinese paintings that are full of Chinese flavor. “Now my dream is realized,” he
says. His next project is an exhibition of his work.
24.Why did Cai Honghao leave his job last year
A.He was forced by his contract. B.He was fond of advertising.
C.He was tired of the pressure. D.He was blamed by the director.
25.What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us
A.The effectiveness of Cai’s skills. B.The efficiency of Cai’s machines.
C.The complexity of leather crafting. D.The diversity of rare leather works.
26.What can best describe his commitment to the shoulder-aching job
A.Do not put off until tomorrow what you love to do at this moment.
B.Do what you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.
C.Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.
D.If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t, change your attitude.
27.What is his family members’ attitude
A.Favorable. B.Doubtful. C.Indifferent. D.Unclear.

Elephants have long been known for their intelligence and memory. A recent German
study on two female Asian elephants, Bibi and Panya, provides scientific evidence that they can
recognize and remember people they’ve bonded with after many years of separation.
科网(北京)股份有限公司
4
Bibi and Panya once lived at the Berlin Zoo, forming close bonds with their human
caregivers. Thirteen years ago, they were moved to Serengeti Park in Germany, which made
them ideal subjects to test elephants’ ability to recall individuals.
Researchers designed the study to check if Bibi and Panya could tell their former
caregivers from strangers. They collected smell stimuli (刺 激 物 ) by having the former
zookeepers wear T-shirts for eight hours and then presented these along with T-shirts worn by
strangers to the elephants. Visual and auditory cues like photographs and voice recordings of
the keepers and unfamiliar individuals were also included.
The research team observed and recorded the elephants’ reactions, mainly measuring how
often and how long they reached out their trunks toward the various stimuli. The sense of smell
is crucial to elephants, so the team thought olfactory ( 嗅 觉 的 ) cues might be key to
recognition.
Both elephants showed a clear preference for the T-shirts worn by their former caregivers.
They reached out their trunks more often and for longer periods toward the familiar smells than
the shirts of unknown individuals. This indicates that the elephants recognized the odor of their
past caregivers even after 13 years.
However, the elephants didn’t react as strongly to the photographs or voice recordings.
There was no significant difference in their responses to familiar and unfamiliar faces or voices.
This suggests that smell plays a more important role in human recognition for elephants than
sight or sound in this study.
These findings are very important for zoos and wildlife shelters. They show the deep bond
elephants can form with caregivers. Continuous care strengthens trust and familiarity, which
seems to be deeply remembered by elephants. Thus, frequent changes — such as frequently
switching caregivers — might disturb the elephant’s sense of security, leading to stress-related
behaviors or health issues. Zoos and conservation programs should consider elephants’
emotional and cognitive (认知) needs for more moral practices.
28. What made Bibi and Panya ideal subjects to test elephants’ ability to recall individuals
A. Their close bonds. B. The long separation.
C. Their strong memory. D. The frequent moves.
29. What did the researchers do in the study
A. They analyzed elephants’ smell. B. They explained a difficult concept.
C. They changed elephants’ behaviour. D. They presented different T-shirts.
30. What does the underlined word “odor” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Smell. B. Voice. C. Figure. D. Face.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Elephants benefit a lot from wildlife shelters.
B. Zoos should prioritize elephants’ physical needs.
C. Continuous care is crucial for elephants’ well-being.
D. Psychological health of elephants is often ignored.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the
long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have
developed an AI algorithm (算法 ) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in
advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations for the predicted
earthquakes.
The research team believes their method succeeded because they stuck with a relatively
simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based
on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a
five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI provided its prediction by
listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings (隆隆声) in the
Earth.
This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You
don’t see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who
leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (Tex Net). “It’s a matter of milliseconds, and
the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a
huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and has the potential to
remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the
researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if
used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial
intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau Tex Net has 300 earthquake stations and over six
years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes.
Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This
strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long
way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward,”
concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
32. How does the AI forecast earthquakes
A. By identifying data from the satellites.
B. By analyzing background sounds in the Earth.
C. By modeling data based on earthquake recordings.
D. By monitoring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
33. What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3
A. The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
B. The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
C. The significance of developing the AI prediction.
D. The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction.
34. What does the follow-up research focus on
A. Conducting tests in different locations.
科网(北京)股份有限公司
6
B. Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C. Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
D. Enlarging the database to train the calculation accuracy.
35. Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology
A. Stable but outdated. B. Effective but costly.
C. Potential and economical. D. Pioneering and promising.

Spark Your Creativity With a Nap
Many famous creative thinkers like Thomas Edison and Salvador Dali were known to take
regular daytime naps. Recent scientific studies suggest this wasn’t just coincidence—there
appears to be a real connection between brief naps and enhanced creativity. Researchers have
discovered that a specific sleep stage called non-rapid-eye-movement (the N1 state), which
occurs just as we begin to fall asleep, may be particularly important for generating innovative
ideas.
A study conducted at the Paris Brain Institute provides strong evidence for this
connection.____36____. After a 20-minute rest period where some participants napped, those
who reached the N1 sleep state were nearly three times more likely to solve challenging math
problems compared to those who stayed awake.
____37____. The famous chemist August Kekulé reportedly discovered the ring
structure of benzene (苯) after visualizing a snake biting its own tail during this half-awake
state. Similarly, many artists and inventors throughout history have credited their nap-time
visions with breakthrough ideas.
Scientists call this process “targeted dream incubation (孵化).”____38____. When people
focus on a specific problem as they begin to nap, their brains continue working on it during this
special sleep stage, often making unexpected connections that lead to creative solutions.
You can try this creative napping technique yourself: Before napping, take a few moments
to write down an issue or creative challenge facing you.____39____Then, when the timer goes
off, stand up, grab the note and pen, and write down whatever jumps into your mind.
____40____. Just like any skill, learning to harness the creative power of naps takes
practice. Researchers suggest trying this method several times before expecting significant
results.
A. Set an alarm for 15-20 minutes to avoid sleeping too deeply.
B. Some people believe longer naps are always more beneficial.
C. The brain remains partially active during this early sleep phase.
D. Regular practice can improve your ability to generate creative solutions.
E. Participants were given difficult math problems they couldn’t initially solve.

F. Historical records show many scientific discoveries came from such moments.
G. It involves consciously thinking about a certain challenge before you fall asleep.

Sophie was dressed and all ready for her very first dance solo. When she started dance
classes last year, she didn’t know about the solo. She heard people talk about it but didn’t know
what it was. The solo was a chance for all of the parents and grandparents to see the dance that
students danced. It was held at the high school every year, and Sophie was going to dance on
stage in front of everyone. She disliked the thought of that as it scared her, and she didn’t know
how to deal with it.
Yesterday she practiced her dance for the first time on stage. There were only a few moms
watching, so it wasn’t too bad. But the thought of dancing in front of lots of people tonight was
really scary.
“Ready to go ” Mom asked. “Yes. I guess so,” answered Sophie. But Mom noticed the
nervousness in Sophie’s voice and asked what was wrong. Sophie said, “I don’t know, not
feeling good and kind of afraid.” Mom then sat on the edge of Sophie’s bed and reminded her
of yesterday’s practice when she was in the front row and Sophie did just fine. Sophie worried
that there would be so many people today. Mom told her that when she went on stage, she
should look right where Mom was sitting yesterday as Mom would be in the same seat, and it
would be just like yesterday. Sophie nodded hesitantly, then got up and prepared to set off.
Sophie thought about her mom’s words all the way to the high school. Mom was always
right, but Sophie wasn’t sure about it this time. She still hated the thought of dancing in front of
all those people.

第二节读后续写 (满分 25 分)
One possible version:
When it was her turn to dance. Sophie thought about what Mom had told her. She took a
deep breath, stepped onto the stage, and looked straight at the front row where Mom sat. As the
music started, she blocked out the rest of the audience and focused only on that one spot. At
first, her legs trembled a little, but as she moved to the rhythm, memories of yesterday’s
smooth practice came back. Slowly, she relaxed and let the dance take over. By the end, she
was completely lost in the joy of dancing. The applause that followed made her heart swell
with pride.
Sophie ran happily to Mom in the hall of the school. “Mom! I did it!” she shouted,
jumping up and down with excitement. Mom opened her arms and gave her a big hug, saying,
“I knew you could! You were amazing out there!” Sophie beamed and said, “It was all because
of your advice. Looking at you made me feel like I was just dancing for one person, not the
whole crowd.” Mom gently stroked her hair and replied, “You’ve just overcome your biggest
fear, and I’m so proud of you.” Holding Mom’s hand tightly, Sophie couldn’t wait for the next
dance performance.

W: Yes, I have. But the thought of diving into bins or sorting through potentially dirty piles
doesn’t appeal to me due to concerns about cleanliness and the items’ real value.
M: I understand. But it is a great way to encourage recycling and reduce waste. Many items
found are in good condition and can be cleaned and reused. You might be surprised at their
value.
W: I see your point. Maybe I judged too quickly. I’ll consider it more.
M: That’s great. It’s meaningful and I hope it gains more attention.

Text 10
W: Good afternoon, everyone. Today, it’s my turn to share my idea about language learning,
drawn from my personal experiences.
When I was young, I showed no interest in learning languages, because each language class
became a source of anxiety. I can’t often make myself understood because of my bad
pronunciation and my accent, so my classmates didn’t want to practice with me. But luckily, I
met a friend and mentor. She taught me how to pronounce words and told me what I should do
in my free time. I made it finally. Language learning is a challenging process, but choosing the
right learning strategies is crucial for success.
First of all, I think developing good study habits is essential. Consistently studying and
practicing every day may be important for mastering language knowledge. Secondly, I discover
the importance of using various learning resources beyond traditional classroom teaching.
People can engage in activities like watching English movies and use high-quality
language-learning apps like FunEasyLearn. Next, people should focus on practice and output,
using the knowledge learned through speaking and writing to improve language skills. Finally,
having a positive attitude and self-confidence is the most important. People should believe in
their ability, have the confidence to overcome challenges in language learning and bravely
express themselves.
If you like to learn a new language, immerse yourself in it as much as possible. That’s all.
Thank you!
