Learning Objectives (学习目标)
1. To get the key information and the details of the text.
2. To learn about the development of the earth and life on the earth.
3. To learn to use important words, expressions and sentences in the text.
4. To be able to talk or write using the expressions and information from the text.
5. To raise the awareness of protecting the earth.
Step 1 Leading-in
By doing a small quiz:
(1). What’s the Earth’s true shape? Sphere(球体) Flat Oblate spheroid (扁球形体)
(2). Roughly how old is the Earth? 6,000 years 4.54 million years 4.54 billion years
(3). Is Earth the largest planet in our Solar System? Yes / No
(4). Is the Earth the only planet in our Solar System with liquid water? Yes / No
(5). Earth's atmosphere is mostly _______? Oxygen or Nitrogen
(6). What percentage of the Earth does the oceans cover? 70% or 50%
Step 2 Fast Reading (Read silently and quickly for key information)
Skim over the text and work out the main idea of each paragraph:
Par. 1 The formation (形成) of the _________.
Par. 2 The formation of the _________.
Par. 3 The presence of _____ and its importance for life on the earth..
Par. 4 The development of _____ and _______.
Par. 5 _____ and their effects on the earth.
Step 3 Detailed Reading (Read carefully to find out detailed information)
Read Part I ( par. 1 to par. 3) The development of the earth (The basis for life)
1. Work out the following chart.
matter explode
atoms fire/rock
other gases

dissolve ___________ and ________ into the oceans and seas

making it possible for ___ to develop

Read Part II (par. 4 to par. 5): The development of life
2. Put the following events in order (The time-line of life on the earth).
Water appeared on the earth.
Insects and amphibians appeared.
Reptiles appeared.
Shellfish and other fish appeared.
Dinosaurs appeared.
Small plants grew on the water.
Plants began to grow on dry land.
Mammals appeared.
Clever animals with hands and feet appeared.
Think about the relationships between plants and animals and fill in the chart?

Step 4 Group Work: Discussion for further understanding
Working in groups, discuss the following questions and give answers: (your answers are not necessarily limited to the text. Use your knowledge and imagination)
1. Why is water important for the development of life on the earth?
2. What role do you think plants (water plants, land plants and forests) play in the development of life?
3. What are the problems (caused by human beings) that life on the earth is facing?
Why? And how do you think we can solve the problems?

Step 5 Summary
Assignment (Homework):
How life began on the earth is one of the biggest puzzles that scientists found hard to solve. What other puzzles are hidden in the passage? In groups, find them out and do some research. Then each group should present a report of your research.
(Try using as many words and expressions as possible that we learned today.)

The universe began with a _______. Then the earth become a ________, which exploded with ________, which in time to produce the earth's ___________. As the earth cooled down, _____ began to appear, which dissolve ____________ and _____ into the oceans and seas.
____________ on water surface filled the oean with oxygen, encouraging life as ________ and _________. __________ on land were followed by ________ and __________. When pants grew into forests, _______ appeared, followed by ________, ________, and finally __________, who caused a serious problem to the earth. Whether the problem can be solved matters a lot for the earth in years to come.
