Hello, listeners! This is Penny Lane on Radio K. I. D. I am bringing you the midday news. Earlier today, Jai Smith was badly hurt at school. I have Jai’s friend, Sam Jones, on the phone. He saw the accident. Sam, can you tell our listeners what went on at school today
—From Penny Lane

Yesterday, a badly hurt ten-year-old child was rushed to the hospital after an accident in a run event at a local school. The run event is part of an exercise program to improve students’ health. The event began from the playground and finished under the trees near the school office. Late in the race, Jai Smith fell because of a rock. “I was just running as fast as I could, with the finish line just ahead of me. When I saw the rock, it was too late,” Jai told our reporter Jack in the hospital. A teacher at the scene said, “We had checked the whole race course(赛道) for the run just before the race started. Surely, the rock must have been put there just after we checked. Young Jai had a good chance of winning before he was hurt.”
—From CBT News

Well, we were doing our fun run. Jai was running really fast at the end of the race and didn’t notice where he was going. Then bang! His head hit the ground. It was lucky I didn’t fall on top of him! Blood was everywhere! Now we are on our way to the hospital.

On the morning of October 19th, 2025, something unbelievable happened at the famous Louvre Museum in Paris. Thieves(小偷) managed to steal several valuable jewels (珠宝). The whole event was over in just seven minutes. Because of this, the museum had to close for a whole day to find out what happened and to keep everyone safe.
According to the police, four people were involved. To get inside, two of them dressed as building workers. They used a lift from a nearby building to secretly enter the museum. Once inside the jewelry room, they used special tools to break the strong glass of the display cases(展示柜) and took the valuable items.
The stolen items were not only expensive, but also important pieces of history from the time of Napoleon. In total, eight jewels were taken. Later, one of them—a beautiful crown that belonged to Empress Eugénie—was found outside the museum. The most surprising thing about the case was that the thieves planned carefully but still left behind the most expensive jewel—the Regent Diamond (worth about 500 million dollars). It was simply left in the same room where the other stolen jewels had been.
Experts say museum thefts happen more often than people think. For example, the British Museum once lost more than 2,000 items, and one piece was listed for only 40 on eBay, a website on the Internet where people can trade goods by making offers, for years before it was noticed!
The French head of state, Mr. Macron, said the theft was a terrible attack(袭击) on France’s cultural heritage(遗产). After this event, the Louvre Museum took steps to improve its security to prevent this from happening again.

A. A whole morning. B. A few minutes. C. A whole day.
( )57. How did two of the thieves get into the Louvre Museum
A. They dressed as visitors and entered secretly.
B. They broke the museum’s door with special tools.
C. They dressed as building workers and used a nearby lift.
( )58. What was true about the stolen jewels from the Louvre Museum
A. Eight pieces of jewels were finally taken away.
B. One of them was a beautiful crown from the time of Napoleon.
C. The Regent Diamond was stolen and sold on eBay for just 40.
( )59. What can we infer from the example of the British Museum
A. Museum thefts are not very common.
B. Stolen items are sometimes sold online cheaply.
C. The British Museum has better security than the Louvre Museum.
( )60. What is the article mainly about
A. A well-planned jewel theft and its effects.
B. The life story of Empress Eugénie.
C. The history of the Louvre Museum’s jewels.

In the past few months, a street food vendor(摊贩) from Jiangxi has suddenly become more popular than stars. His videos have spread quickly, getting hundreds of thousands of likes in just a few days. That man is Li Junyong, widely known as “Chicken Steak Brother(鸡排哥)”. He has been selling fried chicken steak on the streets of Jingdezhen for years.
Every afternoon, Li’s food cart(手推车) becomes the busiest place on the street. He fries chicken steaks at lightning speed while shouting funny, caring lines in the free time. “Be careful, it’s hot!” he reminds one customer. “Look, this steak is bigger than you can imagine!” he jokes to another. When a fresh steak is ready, he proudly announces, “A delicious treat is coming!” Many people say his steak costs only six yuan, but the happiness he serves is worth ten hundred.
But what truly wins people’s hearts is his promise to students. “If I’m late, they’ll call me a liar!” he once said in a video, rushing to No. 5 Middle School with his cart. He even sells to students at a lower price, saying, “They need more tours.”
As time grew, tourists lined up in queues(队列) hundreds of meters long just to see him in person. His wife, mother, and brother-in-law soon joined him, and fans now lovingly call them the “Chicken Steak Family”. Even with many eyes on him, Li stays humble(谦逊的). “I won’t raise the price,” he says. “I just want to make people feel happy.”
Some say SpongeBob is the world’s most passionate cook—but here in Jingdezhen, it seems he has a real-life twin—and this one serves happiness with every delicious chicken steak.

B.任务型阅读。根据短文内容,按要求回答问题。(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)
Life is full of unexpected moments that can surprise us. When facing unexpected situations, we often find ourselves at a crossroads: to react(反应) or to respond(回应). While these two words may seem similar, they are actually different ways to deal with challenges. Understanding the difference can help us make better choices in difficult situations.
Reacting is our natural response. It’s quick and emotional(情绪的). When we react, we want to follow a simple pattern: something happens, we feel anxious, and then we act without much thought. So regrettable decisions are often made because it doesn’t allow time for careful thought.
Responding, on the other hand, is a more thoughtful process. Before we take action to deal with situations, it helps to create more space. This space allows us to understand them clearly. A clear understanding, in turn, helps us make wiser choices.
Research from UCLA has shown that simply naming our emotions can greatly lower stress. This way, called “Affect Labeling”, means noticing and saying what we feel, such as “I feel anxious” or “I’m disappointed right now”. By doing this, we create mental distance(心理距离) from our emotions, making it easier to respond wisely.
This way of responding works for all kinds of problems. You might make mistakes in your work, forget your homework at home, or argue with a friend. Instead of reacting right away—like shouting, crying, or doing something you’ll regret, try the following steps: First, stop and take three deep breaths. Second, say to yourself how you’re feeling. Third, think about what choices you have. Fourth, choose the best action and do it.
Just as life’s unexpected moments test us at every crossroads, the choice between reacting and responding greatly shapes our journey. By practicing the art of thoughtful response again and again, we change those surprising challenges into chances for growth. The two ways of thinking seem similar at first, but one gives you a lasting superpower: when things become uncertain, you stay peaceful and choose wisely.

W: Yes. People in the center take great care of the dogs. They know each dog’s personality, so they give them all names.
M: How old was Cookie when you adopted her
W: About 3 years old. At first, I was worried that it would be hard for an older dog to get used to a new home. Surprisingly, she soon fit in well in the new environment. She is already five years old now.
M: Great! Could you go with me to the animal center to see if there is a dog I can adopt this afternoon
W: Oh, today is Friday, so you know, I’m not free then. We can go there tomorrow afternoon.

Candace Cable was born in California. When she was a kid, she liked to swim and hike. She even dreamed of becoming a great athlete in the future.
Unluckily, her life took an unexpected turn when her leg was hurt in a car crash at the age of 21. She was no longer able to walk as a result of the accident. She couldn’t do the things she had liked doing before the accident. She became angry, and this anger drove her to take action. She would just have to play sports by using her legs.
Candace started swimming again. She wore a special strap to keep her legs straight in the water. She made her arms strong enough so that she could keep herself from going under. It took a lot of time to practice, but Candace didn’t stop her training. Soon, Candace felt she could take part in a swimming race. She practiced a lot and became an excellent swimmer.
Later, Candace’s coach suggested that Candace should try other sports, like racing with her wheelchair and snow skiing. She did well in these sports and got lots of prizes.
Candace’s car accident caused a big problem in her life, but it also gave her a chance to show herself in a new way. She never gave up what she loved.
