For Chinese people, nothing is more common than drinking hot water every day. Different from Westerners’ drinking cold water at home or in restaurants, Chinese people are always seen carrying vacuum cups, whether in winter or in summer.
Why do the Chinese prefer to drink hot water In the 1950s, the Chinese government suggested drinking boiled water to kill off bacteria (细菌). Even now, hot water dispensers (饮水机) still appear in public places like schools, hospitals and railway stations. The second reason is Chinese people’s traditional eating habits. Another reason is based on traditional Chinese medicine, which takes the concept of yin and yang seriously. Hot water is considered to be yang and cold water yin. Drinking hot water can balance the yin and yang in the body and lead to be healthier in cold weather.
However, for most Westerners, they believe that drinking hot water may make your body protection weak. If you get used to drinking hot water, the body is unable to stand water below your body temperature after a long period of time. That is to say, the body endurance (耐力) declines, which goes against the rules of nature. And in Western countries, they prefer hamburgers, cheese and fried food, which are all with high calories. As a matter of fact, they need cold drinks to cool them off.

【原文】Teachers, parents and classmates,
I am very proud to be chosen to speak to you today. I’m also a big nervous, because I’ve never made a speech before so many people. We are going to say goodbye after the high school entrance examination, and we promise we will never forget the happy days we spent with you. Now, I’d like to thank three groups of people for the three things I’ve learned.
The first group is my friends, and what I’ve learned is the importance of friendship. We’ve worked hard and shared difficulties together. We may not see each other so often in the future, but will always keep in touch.
The second group is our parents. We thank you that the love you have shown us. You’ve made our home safe and relaxed, and often help with our homework.
And finally, the third group is our teachers. We can never pay you back for the kindness and knowledge that you have offered us. You will always be our role models.
There’s an old saying which is my favorite: Strangers are only friends you haven’t met yet. I couldn’t say better myself. Thank you all and wish you success for the future.
