As an important part of our everyday
lives, music is increasingly being used in medical treatment.Besides
proving very useful in cancer treatment, managing long-term pain and
even helping the brain recover after a stroke, researchers have been
making great progress in using music to help patients with dementia (失
智症).It reduces patients’ anxiety or stress, lifts their spirits, and
improves their performance at work.
So why does music appear to have such a powerful effect on people
with dementia? About ten years ago, researchers discovered that when
people listened to music, many areas of the brain took part in processing
it.Research has also shown music might help the brain and its connections
grow strong again. It is believed that music could help people with
dementia by fixing or strengthening damaged neural (神经的)
connections and cells.
It’s not just any music that has a great effect on the brain,
though.Familiar and favourite music has been shown to have the biggest
influence on the way we feel, and is closely connected with memory and
emotions. This is because listening to our favourite songs helps to produce
feel-good hormones (荷尔蒙) that give us a sense of pleasure.During
and after listening to favourite music, people with dementia experienced
less pain and anxiety, and their general feelings improved.
Other researchers have even begun testing the effects of music
training programs to support cognition (认知) for people with
dementia. Results have been promising so far, with adults in the study
showing improved conditions, compared to those who took part in just
physical exercise.
So, music is likely to continue to be a useful medical treatment for
people with dementia. But based on what we know so far, it’s important
that it comes from the patient’s own music collection and is used together
with other medical treatments such as taking medicine.

Being a singer in her school music group as
a teenager, Bogan used to love singing along with songs by her favorite
musicians.Unfortunately, the doctors found there was a tumor (肿瘤)
in her head.
Bogan was told that an operation could be a method, but it could
have some side effects.Last August, doctors gave her an operation to
remove the tumor. The operation was a success. But after the doctors
removed the equipment, a bad thing happened — Bogan had trouble
speaking.Since then, Bogan has been working with experts to change the
situation, but there is no sign that she will ever be able to speak like she
used to.
Last month, Bogan got her voice back in a way.Experts created a
tool — Voice Engine — for her, using AI. She uses a text-to-voice app
on her phone so she can now do things like ordering her favorite coffee at
Starbucks. She uses it by writing words in her phone and holding it up at
the coffee shop so servers can hear her.
The app uses OpenAI’s voice tool.Programmers trained the app
using a 15-second sound recording from a cooking video Bogan made as a
teenager. Most of the video had cooking sounds, but that was all they
could use.And it was enough.
The app makes mistakes, but people who know Bogan do not seem
worried. They are just happy to hear her voice. As for Bogan herself, she
said it helped make her as confident as she was before all this happened,
which meant a lot to her.She uses the app about 40 times per day, and
she believes the technology will progress over time so that when she is
older, she does not have to depend on the voice she had as a teenager.
Jeff Harris is OpenAI’s project leader for Voice Engine. He said
although the company is very limited in who they are giving the
technology to, because they want to be sure everyone whose voice is
being used has given permission (许可), this is only a short-term
measure. In the near future, it will see more and more users.

Have you ever imagined
travelling to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache
of communicating in a different language?
In a recent Wall Street Journal article, technology policy expert Alec
Ross argued that, within ten years or so, we would be able to
communicate with one another through small earpieces with built-in
microphones. That’s because technological progress is extremely
fast. It’s only a matter of time.Just as a “clever personal helper” like
Siri or Alexa is getting better at understanding what you say, there is no
reason to think that the future will not bring a “personal assistant
translator”.
Nevertheless, translating is an altogether different task compared
with finding the nearest Starbucks, because machines aim for perfection
and reasonability, while languages — humans — are always imperfect
and unreasonable.Replacing a word with its equivalent (对等词) in the
target language is actually the easy part of a translator’s job.But this
seems to be a tricky job for computers.
It’s so hard for computers because translation doesn’t — or
shouldn’t — be simply translating words, sentences or
paragraphs.Rather, it’s about translating meaning. And in order to infer
meaning from a specific expression, people need to understand a lot of
information all at once.Think about all the related information that can
help us understand what someone is trying to say: tone, body
movements, situations, and even your culture. All are likely to express
as much meaning as the words you use.
Therefore, we should doubt whether a machine can truly understand
our world like we do.If people from different cultures can upset each other
without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better? Unless
engineers actually find a way to breathe a soul into a computer, when it
comes to expressing and translating meaning using a natural language, a
machine will never fully take our place.

Fifty years ago, the well-loved musician
Bob Dylan played at the Newport Folk Festival and was widely booed
The audience may have been unhappy but Dylan’s
performance helped change the direction of music and culture in the United
States.
The mid-1960s was a time of great change. One such place of change
was the world of folk music.Bob Dylan became a symbol of change when
he moved from acoustic (原声的) to electric guitar.
Rock music historian Elijah Wald has written a new book about the
change. It is called “Dylan Goes Electric”.
“There was a moment in the early 1960s when you could look at the
Billboard charts and seven of the top 10 albums were folk records. And
Joan Baez, Peter Paul and Mary, the Kingston Trio, all had huge,
huge, huge number-one records.”
And then this happened: The “British Invasion” introduced the
world to the Beatles and grew a huge fan base for rock music.“That
worried many folk musicians,” says Elijah Wald.
They hoped that Bob Dylan would come to the rescue. However, a
new Dylan sound came from the stage.
Bob Dylan had gone electric, and the followers of folk music were
not pleased.
“When Dylan went electric, I think one of the issues was the
feeling that — wait a minute, he’s gone over to the enemy.”
Folk lovers had looked to Bob Dylan to save their movement from
rock and roll. But, author Wald says Dylan felt differently about the
music.
“Dylan had always liked rock and roll and Dylan didn’t think of
rock and roll as stupid music.” In fact, Dylan was a Beatles fan.He
later said that from the first time he heard the Beatles he knew “they were
pointing to the direction where music had to go”.
Beyond the music, Dylan’s performance that night also marked a
turn in American culture.

What’s the worst kind of sleep for your
health: the kind where you keep a right bedtime but wake up every few
hours, or the kind where you go to bed late and only get a few hours of
shut-eye? Scientists might finally have an answer.
Patrick Finan and his team carried out a study comparing the two
types of sleep in a group of 62 healthy men and women who were good
sleepers. The participants (参与者) spent three days and nights in a
sleep lab and answered questions about their mood (情绪) every
evening before sleeping. While they slept, the researchers measured their
sleep stages so they could document when and how much of each stage of
sleep, from light to deeper sleep, each volunteer got every night.A
third of the group were arranged to be woken up several times a night,
another third were not allowed to go to sleep until later but weren’t
woken up, and the final group, which acted as the control group, was
allowed to sleep without being interrupted (打断) through the night.
When Finan compared the three groups’ mood ratings, he found
that the interrupted and short sleepers both showed drops in positive mood
after the first night. But on the next nights, the interrupted sleepers
continued to report diminishing positive feelings while the short sleepers
did not — they stayed at about the same level they had reported after the
first night.
When he studied the brain of interrupted sleepers and short sleepers,
he found that those who woke up repeatedly showed less deep sleep that is
usually connected with feeling relaxed, than those getting the same sleep
but in a continuous time.
The finding suggests how everything from stress to anxiety can affect
both sleep and mood. You can’t avoid the stresses in your daily life, but
you just might be able to lessen the blow with sleep — as long as it’s
uninterrupted.
