watch over the Great Wall.
Living in a village near the Great Wall, Mei has a deep love for the
wall.He still remembers he usually ran and played hide-and-seek with his
friends on this impressive structure when he was a child. However, when
he returned to the village after working outside for years, he was
surprised by the damage to the ancient wall.“Some villagers even took
bricks from it to build their houses,” Mei said.
To help protect the wonder, Mei volunteered to walk along the wall
each day to check its condition, encouraging other villagers to join
him.“Of course, it might be dangerous to hike in the mountains by
myself, so I always tap the grassy ground along the way with a wooden
stick, scaring wild animals away,” Mei said.
In 2006, as head of the village, Mei helped set up a local volunteer
protection group.Realizing the importance of heritage protection, more
and more villagers returned the bricks they had taken, and about 80 of
them joined as volunteers. To ensure that the volunteers could carry out
their duties effectively, Mei arranged for training programs on basic
protection and safety measures.Together, they conducted daily check-
ups to track the condition of the Great Wall and reported any damages.
Encouraged by her father, Mei’s daughter followed him and
officially became a Great Wall protector in 2019.“When I was a child,
my father always told me his stories and talked about the history of the

(2025·郴州高一期末)As a teenager, having problems with your
parents is completely normal. These problems may result from
communication breakdowns, a lack of understanding, or moments
when you feel your parents are being unfair.Remember, improving your
relationship with your parents is a process that requires time, effort, and
patience from both sides.
One of the most important steps in this process is showing respect. All
parents desire respect from their children, because it is necessary for the
parent-child bond.It may not always be easy to respect your parents,
especially when you believe you have a better understanding of a
situation. However, it’s important to admit their wisdom and
experience.
Sometimes parents may make mistakes even though they are
adults. When your parents say something hurtful to you, forgive them
without a second thought. When you feed a lot of anger towards your
parents, step into their shoes for a moment, and imagine how they
feel. This can help you see eye to eye with them.
Effective communication is key to any healthy relationship. At the
center of every relationship are a few lines of communication, not one-
way communication.Do voice your complaints (抱怨) to your
parents. When you complain to your parents, you should keep calm and
talk with them openly and kindly. In order to express yourself in a way that
is easily acceptable, it is important to put your feelings into the form of
“I” statements rather than “You” statements. And in order to make
communication more efficient, it is important to figure out what you
would like your parents to do clearly. You also need to tell them what you
would like them to do differently, so make sure your request is something
that is straightforward and reasonable.
Once you get to know your parents, you’ll discover similarities
between you and them, which will make it a much simpler task to
improve your relationship!

UNESCO has recognized Bangladesh’s rickshaw (人力车) and
rickshaw painting as intangible cultural heritage. The Bangladesh official
Khandkar M. Talha said the global recognition of one of the most common
means of transport in Bangladesh and its colorful painting came during the
ongoing meeting on safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in Botswana
on Wednesday.
The three-wheeled passenger rickshaw pedaled (踩踏板) by one
person and rickshaw painting are the fifth Bangladeshi item (项目) to
make the list. Khandkar M. Talha said,“Due to the development of
modern transport systems, the movement of rickshaws in big cities is
limited. There is a possibility that the rickshaw and rickshaw painting will
gradually disappear. So Bangladesh pulled out all the stops to keep this
painting alive. As a result of our hard work, this painting, which has
been ongoing for the past eighty years, has been recognized by UNESCO
as a World Heritage Site.”
Traditionally made by hand, almost every part of a rickshaw is
painted with colorful flowers, natural views, birds, animals, and
movie stars. The rickshaw became one of the main means of transport in
cities in Bangladesh after it was introduced in this part of the world in the
1930s.
It was first introduced as a means of transport in Japan in the 20th
century and became very popular in the country because petrol and
motorized (机动的) transport were not common and expensive.
However, Japan soon started using motorized cars instead of rickshaws,
and by the 1950s, the cycle (自行车) rickshaw had disappeared from
the country and became popular elsewhere in Asia.
Transport experts in Bangladesh have suggested gradually taking
cycle rickshaws off Dhaka’s streets as they cause terrible traffic problems
in the capital city and are not very safe themselves.

paragraph 2 mean?( )
A. Made every effort.
B. Enjoyed every minute.
C. Brought all things to a stop.
D. Drove all the painters away.

Kyle Adamkiewicz, 33, has lived with epilepsy (癫痫) since
the age of 6. He is now using a novel way to use his love of art and the
power of nature to help bring attention to his disorder.
In October 2022, Adamkiewicz began collecting seashells from the
New Jersey shore, then painting them with heartfelt messages in search
of a cure (疗法). He places his works of art along the seaside
boardwalks in the hope that they will encourage strangers to spread the
word — and the shells.
“My project started with just painting a few shells,”
Adamkiewicz said. “And then I saw the local people posting them
online, and writing so many good comments about the shells and about
finding a cure for epilepsy. That encouraged me to keep making more.
And now they have been around the whole world.”
Adamkiewicz doesn’t drive, so his parents take him to different
locations to place his shells. Besides a hand-painted design, each shell
contains a QR code. When people scan (扫) the QR code, it takes
them to the Epilepsy Foundation website, where people can learn more
about epilepsy.
The Adamkiewicz family has a map of the world hanging on the wall
to mark where the shells have been found. Adamkiewicz agreed that his
project has given new meaning to his life. “It was more than just painting
shells. It became a way for me to connect with others. Seeing the
influence it had on people, both locally and globally, was really
rewarding (令人满意的),” he smiled.
Adamkiewicz is also working on a children’s book to teach kids
more about epilepsy and what to do if someone is having a seizure (发
作).“We want to teach people how to be kind, and how to help,”
Adamkiewicz said.

  (2025·衢州高一质量检测)Brazilian artist and activist Mundano
recently painted an unusual mural (壁画) on a building in Sao
Paulo. The paint included materials collected from natural disasters, such
as ash from wildfires and mud from floods.Mundano hoped to draw global
attention to climate change, as extreme weather events have been causing
destruction across Brazil.
The large mural — over 30 meters high and 48 meters wide — shows
the gray remains of trees on a brown land that is dry and cracked,
representing the deforestation (滥伐森林) and serious drought in the
Amazon rainforest.
The mural also shows local activist Alessandra Korap wearing a circle
of flowers around her head. She holds a sign that says:“Stop the
destruction and keep your promise.” The artist says those messages are
directed to Cargill, a US-based soybean (大豆) producer.Soy farming
is one of the biggest causes of deforestation in the Amazon.Cargill says it
will end deforestation in its supply chain in Brazil by 2025.Mundano is
seeking to hold the company responsible for that promise.
In recent months, human-caused wildfires have severely damaged
protected places in the Amazon area.Smoke has spread over a very large
area and affected the air quality in some Brazilian cities.
Drought has caused a terrible situation nationwide. On 22 October,
the depth of the Amazon’s Negro River measured (测量) 12.46
meters, showing a small increase from 10 days earlier, when the river
was at its lowest point since measurements started 122 years ago.But this
last reported measure is still about 6 meters below normal for the same date
in earlier years.
Earlier this year, a flood in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul
killed more than 180 people, affected over 2 million people, and
destroyed city communities.
Mundano used mud from that flood to create the mural, ashes from
Brazil’s fires in the Atlantic Forest, and clay from an Amazon village
where Alessandra Korap is from.“From floods to droughts, everything
is connected!” Mundano said in an interview.
