As a kid, I was always around animals and I always enjoyed it. After my senior year of high school, we started
renting this farm. Then I went away to Rhode Island School of Design to become an architect. After about two
years and a half, I found that was not quite what I wanted to do. I felt I wanted to be an architect and have a hobby
farm. But why not just have a farm and make it my career
It’s an exciting business. I think a lot of people don’t realize what’s involved with dairy farming (奶牛业). We
took some trips to some progressive farms out in New York when we first started. And it really changed my attitude
of what you can do. You can be a successful businessperson with a lot of challenges. And those challenges are part
of what makes it very exciting — it’s not just milking cows. There’s nutrition and finances and a lot of big
day-to-day decisions.
Well, land is the biggest obstacle. Securing enough land is important. We don’t just need the land for the
animals; we also need it to distribute the manure from the cows. And there’s a real balance, a real recycling. You
take the feed; you give it to the cows, and the cows give you milk, but they also give you a lot of manure. And the
best thing to do is putting it back on the land. You need 2 acres per cow basically, a cow and its calf.
The land that we rent is beautiful and the land that we own is beautiful. If you get half a mile off the road and
looking back at scenery across the valley, it’s impressive. You get the rows of grass and the cows in the distance.
4. Which of the following is included in the dairy farming according to the text
A. Designing for the dairy farming.
B. Playing with the cows around the farm.
C. Taking trips around the farm to enjoy life.
D. Milking cows, nutrition, finances and decisions.
5. What’s the biggest challenge that the author faced
A. Huge amounts of money. B. Securing enough land.
C. Highly qualified milk cows. D. Quantities of workers.
6. What’s the meaning of the underlined word in Paragraph 3
A. Milk from the cows. B. Chemical fertilizers.
C. Waste of the cows. D. Food offered to cows.
7. Which one is the best title for this text
A. Building a Successful Dairy Business
B. Famous Farmers Around the World
C. Highly Qualified Milk Cows
D. The Architecture Designer

When adult humans meet a baby, many can’t help speaking in a higher-pitched (更高音), sing-song voice.
This change, known as parentese, is not unique to humans — it has also been watched in animals like monkeys
and gorillas. Now, scientists are adding one more species to that list: bottle-nosed dolphins.
Dolphins are intelligent animals that live and hunt in groups. They communicate in a unique way: every
individual produces its own unique sound that acts much like an ID card, usually by its first birthday. But how does
each come up with its unique sound For babies, it might have something to do with listening to Mum. To solve
this mystery, researchers examined the sounds mother dolphins make.
Scientists studied 34 years’ worth of recordings of sounds made by 19 female bottle-nosed dolphins. When the
mother dolphins were near their young, they continued to make their unique sound, but at a higher frequency. They
also used a wider range of frequencies (频率) than they did when their babies were not nearby.
This discovery suggests that using these changes mother dolphins help their young in learning how to produce
these calls themselves. Since dolphin babies often spend some years with their mothers before living on their own,
it makes sense that this adaptation would help them learn to communicate. At the very least, the higher-pitched
sound is likely to get the babies’ attention. “It’s important for a baby to know, ‘Oh, Mum’s talking to me now’”
says marine biologist June Mann.
This kind of research could help us understand how language developed in humans. “It is absolutely necessary
to have basic knowledge about other species and how they communicate,” says Mann. “I would be really interested
to see whether dolphins also change their sounds when interacting with babies of others, which is what happens in
humans.”
8. What’s the function of paragraph 1 in the text
A. To give examples. B. To lead to the topic.
C. To make a comparison. D. To show an explanation.
9. How old is a bottle-nosed dolphin when it has its own unique sound
A. One year old. B. Two years old.
C Three years old. D. Four years old.
10 How does each dolphin come up with its unique sound
A. By learning from their mums.
B. By drawing their mums’ attention.
C. By using a wider range of frequencies.
D. By watching the behavior of other dolphins.
11. How does Mann feel about the research on the communication among dolphins
A. Doubtful. B. Disapproving. C. Fascinated. D. Unconcerned.

The American Psychological Association (APA) has issued its first guidance on teens’ social media use. What’
s most surprising in its data-based recommendations is how little we know about how these apps influence our kids,
which means little research is available about their long-term effects on teens’ brains. Getting better data will
require a lot of money and much more openness from tech companies(公司).
What little evidence we do have unsurprisingly suggests that social media operates on motivators(激励因素)
that aren’t great for young brains. “Many kids start using social media at the worst possible time when it comes to
brain development”, says Mitch Prinstein, a psychologist at the University of North Carolina. “Things like the
‘like’ button and artificial intelligence are going to influence young people’s brains in a way that’s very different
from adult brains when it comes to the desire to stay online and to say or do almost anything to get followers.”
When it comes to social interactions, he compares kids’ brains to a car with a huge gas pedal(油门) and weak
brakes (刹车).
Earlier this year, Prinstein and his UNC colleagues published the results of one of the first studies of how the
teenage brain reacts to social media. The team surveyed a group of middle students to understand their social media
habits, and then stuck them in an MRI machine to watch their brains as they reacted to social rewards or
punishments. They found that 12-year-olds who habitually checked social media had different neural patterns(神经
模式), with more activity over time in parts of the brain related to enthusiasm and concentration.
The team didn’t weigh in on whether those differences were good or bad. But their work points to the need for
more research. It should also remind parents of the need to be aware of social media’s hidden influence on
still-developing brains.
12. What does the APA report point out about social media apps
A. The disadvantages of their motivators. B. The shortage of data on their influence.
C. The dishonesty of social media. D. The influence of tech companies.
13. Which word can best describe young brains in relation to social interactions
A. Tense. B. Limited. C. Uncontrolled. D. Frightened.
14. What did Prinstein’s team find in their study
A. Kids were more self-centered.
B. Social media brought about a positive effect.
C. 12-year-old kids were more enthusiastic than others.
D. Regular social media checking changed neural patterns.
15. What might be the best title for the text
A. The Limitations on Teens.
B. The Guidance on Teens’ Social Media Use.
C. The Useful Recommendations of Social Media.
D. The Hidden Impact of Social Media on Teens’ Brains.

Paul and I were on our school basketball team, The Lions. We loved basketball and were both huge fans of the
NBA. When we weren’t playing on the court, we were watching a game on TV. My favourite player was LeBron
James. Paul’s favourite player was Tyrone Bogues, a guy who played for the Charlotte Hornets, although we
actually agree that they are both champions.
Bogues was only 1.6 metres tall, which made him the shortest player ever in the NBA. Guess what Paul was
only 1.6 metres tall, too! Paul knew that being shorter than other players meant that he had to practise more. During
all those hours of doing jump shots on his own, he used Bogues as his inspiration. Paul once said, “If Bogues could
make it, why not me ” Our coach was not so sure. Paul had to try out many times just for making the team. He was
still usually on the bench, being just a replacement, which was really tough on him. I knew Paul had real skills, and
was someone who worked really hard and had a strong desire to play for the team. However, Paul didn’t get a
chance.
Then came the big day. We were playing our main competitors, The Bears, a team whose record of this season
had been perfect. They hadn’t lost a single game. Despite our best efforts, we were still 10 points behind The Bears.
Without much time left, the last quarter began. Unfortunately, our team members got injured one after another.
All hope fell on me. Unfortunately, a player and I crashed into each other. With pain racing through my body,
my knee hurt badly. The team gathered around, looking worried. The doctor put an ice pack on my knee, but it was
still painful. Obviously, I could not play any more. The coach gave a deep sigh and murmured in a low voice, “We
have no more players”.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“I think I can give it a try,” a determined voice came from the crowd.

【答案】Dear fellow students,
As we all know, environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over the world. Pollution is
threatening our existence. Our school advocates that we should build a low-carbon life in order to protect the earth.
I think it is everyone’s duty to work hard to achieve this goal.
Firstly, we should ride bicycles instead of riding in cars or school buses to reduce the amount of pollution.
Secondly, when we eat the food in the school cafeteria, we should eat up what we buy and not waste the food.
Thirdly, it is important for us to save electricity and water. We should not leave the lights on in the daytime and
leave water running after washing.
Dear fellow students, let’s start right now and spare no effort to do every little thing we can from now on!

【答案】“I think I can give it a try,” a determined voice came from the crowd. Everyone turned around and all eyes
rested on Paul. He bowed his head, a bit embarrassed. Looking at him up and down, the coach shook his head.
“Give him a chance, coach!” I begged. “What have we got to lose Let Paul play!” another player said. Seeing the
coach still hesitant, Paul stepped forward and raised his voice, “Trust me, coach! I won’t let you down!” His eyes
were burning with eagerness. “Well, it’s your turn to shine.” the coach finally agreed. (81)
Paul jumped up and rushed onto the court. He was like an energetic lion. And clearly, all the extra hours that
he’d spent practising alone paid off. No one could keep up with his energy and speed, or steal the ball from his
hand. He made shot after shot. When the final whistle sounded, we won by two points. The crowd burst out
deafening clapping and cheering. We all hugged Paul and threw him into the air. At that moment, he was our
“Tyrone Bogures”, a hero and champion in our heart. (84)
