This conflict was going on in her mind between good and evil. she was hurrying home as fast as possible. However, before she got home, the Golden Rule sounded in her ears. Suddenly she turned around and rushed along the road with breathless speed. A few minutes later, she found herself at Mr. Thompson’s inn. He was very surprised to see her.
“Sir, you paid me two bills instead of one,” she handed him the extra note. Moved by the little girl’s honesty, Mr. Thompson pulled out a shilling and offered it to her. Susan refused the money for she didn’t want to be paid for doing right -- she only wished he wouldn’t think her dishonest. Desperate to tell her mother what she had done, Susan waved goodbye to Mr. Thompson and returned to her humble home with a lightened heart. Never would she forget this day through the course of her whole life.

Text 1
M: Who did you say was coming over today I might be at my parents’ house until tomorrow, so I will miss your friends if they’re still coming.
W: It’s not my friends. The tree service workers are the ones who will be here later.
Text 2
M: Miss, can I interest you in the seafood special tonight It won’t start until nine, but it’s only $25, half the usual price.
W: Oh really There is only fifteen minutes to go.
Text 3
M: My interview is on Monday, but I only have the formal shirts I bought for the school dance.
W: These shirts are fine. We should go get you a trendier hairstyle.
M: You think so I think all of these shirts are too colorful or casual.
Text 4
M: Who’s the person in Mr. Abar’s yard Is he helping Mr. Abar to put in a new pool
W: Oh, that’s Chris Powell. He’s helping to make a taller barrier, so people can’t climb into the yard. I met him when I was cutting the grass.
Text 5
W: You looked great out there! I know you didn’t reach your goal, but you should be proud.
M: I wish I could do better, but I honestly think this is the best that I will ever do. It was a good race, though.
Text 6
M: Isn’t this so exciting, Liz We get to move to a new town next month! I’m so pleased about the area, too. California’s weather is so beautiful.
W: I just want to get it over with. We should have just left this week. Dad is already out there anyway.
M: We have to wait until Mom is ready to go. She wants to do things like transferring her bank accounts and setting up her new driver’s license. Besides, she still has work to finish.
W: I guess so. I’m just glad she told her boss early on. Otherwise, we might be stuck here even longer.
Text 7
W: What did you learn in class today, Tom
M: We learned about how things move and the variations that make them move differently.
W: I thought you had geometry on Wednesdays. This sounds complicated for the first-year high school students.
M: We usually do have geometry, but a special speaker came in today. Besides, it isn’t nearly as hard as the chemistry class on Thursday.
W: So what did you learn
M: Well, the scientist that came in told us all about how speed and weight change the way that things interact with our world. But he was surprised when I asked my question about something else.
W: What did you ask about
M: I remembered a long time ago when you and Dad told me about gravity. We were talking about the moon and how people can jump really high there. So I asked him what the difference would be between one object here and on the moon.
Text 8
M: If you want, you can sleep for a little while on the couch before we go. I know you had a long day of work. I’ll make sure you don’t sleep too long.
W: I’ll pass up the sleep. But yes, it was especially long because we had our annual meeting. It’s not usually a problem, but this one had us sitting for a long time.
M: Was it really boring
W: Actually, it was pretty interesting.
M: Well, I have coffee already made if you want some. It is cold, if that’s OK.
W: Sure. I don’t normally have cold coffee, though. As long as it doesn’t have any sugar or milk in it, I will enjoy it.
M: No problem. Here you go.
W: Thanks. Did John say what time his baseball game ended today He’ll need to shower afterwards. We can prepare a cup of sour coffee for him.
M: He said in about two hours from now he would be here. We could watch a film while we wait.
W: That’s OK. I’ll save my attention for the classical violinists we will see.
Text 9
W: Tell me how you have been feeling since you have recovered.
M: Well, doctor, I feel much better now. I don’t have headaches anymore and I’m beginning to get my smell back. However, I still can’t taste anything!
W: That may take a while to get back. But I will take some blood work into the laboratory and we can take a look. If you would like, I know of a treatment that is being experimented with. They are looking for people with your condition.
M: Will it help fix my problem Eating and drinking are my favorite things in the world.
W: It might, but you will need to go somewhere else to do the program. We don’t have anything like that here at the hospital.
M: I don’t care. If it gives me my senses back, I’ll do it.
W: Well, taste is strongly tied with the sense of smell. The idea behind the experiment is to have you working out your nose. You will start with strong smells and move to weaker ones in order to train your nose to work again.
M: And that will help me taste things Wouldn’t it be better to eat really strong food or drinks
W: No, it wouldn’t. You need to gain the strength back little by little. Unfortunately, there is no medicine that can cure this issue quickly.
Text 10
An ocean mystery — how the blackest fish in the deep sea are so extremely black — has been solved in a study that began with a bad photograph. Dr. Karen Osborn said that she couldn’t get a good shot — just shapes. Her detailed study of the animal’s “super-black” skin revealed that it traps light. While it makes them difficult to photograph, scientists say it provides the best way of hiding. There is, Dr. Osborn explained, nowhere to hide from enemies in the deep ocean, so this “super-blackness” makes creatures almost invisible. The discovery could result in new super-black materials, such as coatings(涂层) for the insides of telescopes or cameras. Several species appear to have developed the same trick. Parts of their skin push away any light they don’t absorb, Dr. Osborn said. It was her unsuccessful efforts to take good photographs of the creatures that inspired her to take a closer look. “Every picture I took was really bad,” she said, “Then I noticed they had really strange skin — they’re so black, and they suck up all the light.” This is the best way of hiding in the deep sea. Living in the deep sea is like playing hide-and-seek. Being so black really helps these creatures to survive. Her efforts to capture beautifully clear images of these species, all of which live at ocean depths of more than 200 meters, eventually paid off. “It took a lot of special lighting,” she admitted.

A few years ago, my husband Charlie and I had marriage problems. Growing family responsibilities and financial worries took a toll on us and we began arguing frequently, often late into the night.
However, neither of us could take the step that would end our eleven-year marriage and bring heartbreak to our three young children. Deep down we knew we still loved each other, so we determined to work it out. Through countless discussions, we began to close the gulf. The more honest we were, the closer we became. When I felt we were reaching solid ground, I asked my husband to give me an “eternity (永恒) ring”. It was not so much the ring I wanted; it was the reassurance I thought it would bring.
We went shopping on a beautiful summer day. We walked hand in hand along a row of jeweler’s shops. Finally I found a ring I liked. While waiting for it to be adjusted, the jeweler took my left hand and glanced at my engagement ring. “May I clean it for you ” he asked. “It really doesn’t sparkle like it used to.” Charlie said as I slipped the ring off my finger. A few minutes later the jeweler was back. The ring shone like new!
On the drive home, I didn’t take my eyes off it. I forgot all about the eternity ring. I just couldn’t believe how this old ring suddenly sparkled the way it had the day Charlie gave it to me. I had taken it for granted these past years, but with a little polish it could still make my heart beat fast.
And that’s the way it is with a marriage. You have to work at keeping it polished and new, or else the grime (污垢) of the passing years will hide the joy. I put my hand on the seat between us and spread my fingers. Charlie covered my hand with his. I felt I was lucky to be able to see the sparkle in something old when I thought I needed something new.
24. The author and her husband had marriage problems partly because __________.
A. they frequently argued late into the night B. they were lack of money
C. they had countless discussions D. the author wanted to have an eternity ring
25. What does the underlined part in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Free of trouble. B. Arriving at a square.
C. Wealthy and generous. D. In good relationship.
26. Why did the author forget all about the eternity ring on their way back home
A.The old ring’s light attracted her attention. B. She was not satisfied with the eternity ring.
C. Her husband kept it for her. D. The couple were talking all the way merrily.
27. What does the author mainly want to express in the last paragraph
A. We tend to prefer new objects to old ones. B. One should remain thankful for what he has got.
C. Marriage should be constantly polished. D. We should try to rediscover the use of old objects.
C
Two thirds of the ice in the glaciers (冰川) of the Alps is doomed! These glaciers will melt by the end of the century as global temperatures rise, according to a recent study.
Scientists claim that half the ice held in some 4,000 Alpine glaciers will disappear by 2050 due to global warming through the effect of past emissions. After that, even if carbon emissions drop to zero, two-thirds of the ice will still have melted by 2100. If emissions continue to rise at the current rate, the ice tongues will have all but disappeared from Alpine valleys by the end of the century. The most pessimistic prediction tells us that the Alps will be mostly ice-free by 2100. Only isolated ice patches would remain at high altitudes, representing five per cent, at most, of the ice volume seen today.
The researchers warn that the loss of these glaciers will mean much less water is available for farming and hydroelectricity, especially during droughts. It would also affect nature and tourism.
In February, a study found that a third of the huge ice fields in Asia’s towering mountain chains were also under threat for the same reasons. This will lead to serious consequences for almost two billion people who live downstream. Glaciers along the Hindu Kush and Himalayan range are at higher, colder altitudes. If global carbon emissions are not cut, however, two-thirds of their ice could be gone by 2100.
The latest research combined computer models with real-world data to forecast the fate of the glaciers. It used 2017 as its starting point. Unlike previous work, these models included how the glaciers move down the mountains. Applying this approach to other glaciated mountain chains could improve ice loss forecasts there.
Cutting the emissions from fossil-fuel burning, deforestation and other polluting activities is the biggest factor in minimizing the melting of the ice. The future of these glaciers is indeed at risk, but there is still a possibility of limiting their disappearance.
28. What does the underlined word “doomed” mean in paragraph 1
A. Polluted. B.Abandoned. C. Discovered. D. Endangered.
29. What can we infer from paragraph 2
A. Emissions have much to do with the ice melting.
B. The Alps is expected to lose all its ice by 2100.
C. Ice loss will be avoided with emissions prevented.
D. Large ice pieces will just exist at the mountain top.
30. Why are the Asia’s ice fields mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To explain how glacier melting came about.
B. To imply pollution is a worldwide problem.
C. To show what consequences ice melting will cause.
D. To indicate the Alps is not alone to face ice melting.
31. What is the writer’s attitude towards the future of glaciers
A. Critical. B.Optimistic.
C.Objective. D. Doubtful.
D
In one horrible film plot, AI eventually outsmarts humans and takes over computers and factories. In another, large language models (LLMs) of the sort that power generative AI like ChatGPT give bad guys the know-how to create destructive cyberweapons.
It is time to think hard about these film plots, not because they have become more probable but because policymakers around the world are considering measures to guard against them. The idea that AI could drive humans to extinction is speculative—no one yet knows how such a threat might materialise and no common methods exist for determining what counts as risky. Plenty of research needs to be done before standards and rules can be set.
Governments cannot ignore a technology that could change the world deeply. Regulators have been too slow in the past, but there is danger, too, in acting hurriedly. If they go too fast, policymakers could create global rules that are aimed at the wrong problems and are ineffective against the real ones.
Because of the computing resources and technical skills required, only a handful of companies have so far developed powerful “frontier” models. New hurried regulations could easily block out competitors to the “handful of companies”, especially because these companies are working closely with governments on writing the rule book. A focus on extreme risks is likely to make regulators careful of open -source models, which are freely available and can easily be revised.
The best that governments can do now is to set up the basic systems to study the technology and its potential risks, and ensure that those working on the problem have enough resources. As AI develops further, regulators will have a far better idea of what risks they are guarding against, and consequently what the rule book should look like. A fully mature body could eventually take shape. But creating it will take time and reflection.
32.What does the first paragraph function as
A. An argument. B. An explanation. C.A lead-in. D.A comment.
33.What does the author think of AI driving humans to extinction
A. He believes itis a realistic possibility.
B. He considers itfictional and unworthy for policymakersto pay attention to.
C. He views it asan uncertain threat that needs more research.
D. He perceives it asa seemingly reasonable situation that requires serious consideration.
34.What is the harm of regulators’ going too fast on the AI issue
A. Competition in this area is prevented. B. The development of AI is restricted.
C.AI will be applied to a limited degree. D.The public will be misled about danger.
35.Which can be the best title of the text
A.AI: a Real Threat B.Don’t Rush into Policing AI
C.AI: Humans’ Friend or Enemy D.Time for Government to Regulate AI

To act with integrity was a habit with Susan who always follows the Golden Rule: “Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you.” But when she thought over her past conduct, a blush of shame crept to her cheeks, as many little acts of selfishness and unkindness came back to her memory. She resolved that for the future, both in great things and small. she would remember and follow the Golden Rule.
It was not long after this that an opportunity occurred, which tried Susan’s principles. One Saturday evening when she went, as usual, to Mr. Thompson’s inn, to receive the money of her mother’s washing for him, which amounted to five dollars, she found Mr. Thompson apparently in a terrible rage with some horse dealers with whom he had been bargaining. He held in his hand an open pocketbook (钱袋子) , full of bills and scarcely noticing Susan as she made her request, except to swear at her for troubling him when he was busy, he handed her a banknote.
Glad to escape so easily, Susan hurried out of the gate. Pausing to put the money safely in her purse, she discovered that he had given her two bills instead of one. She looked around; nobody was near and her first impulse was joy at the unexpected prize.
“It is all mine,” said she to herself. “I will buy my mother a new coat with it, and she can give her old one to my sister Mary, and then Mary can go to the Sunday school with me next winter. I wonder if I can buy a pair of shoes for my brother Tom, too.”
At that moment she remembered that he must have given it to her by mistake. But again the voice of the tempter whispered, “He gave it, and how do you know that he did not intend to make you a present of it Keep it! He will never know it, for he had too many such bills in that great pocketbook.”
