(Text 10)
Most Americans treat their pets like family members. It means
Americans love their pets. And they provide them with a proper home,
food, exercise, and medical care.Americans love pets and it is not just
puppy love.Sometimes, they add to their interest to their pets with
entertaining videos and amusing toys.If they have an eye for fashion,
pets’ owners can dress their pets in pretty clothes. For special occasions,
they can use perfume to make their dogs smell nice or less beastly. You
might see Americans treat their pets like they treat their children,
sometimes even better. The most common pets in the US are dogs, cats,
birds and fish.Pets, such as dogs and cats, make good companions. But
in addition to providing good companionship, pets are useful too.For
example, dogs guard property, herd cattle and sheep, and lead the
blind.Monkeys, unusual pets in the US, will soon become useful pets
for disabled persons.Scientists are now training monkeys to help disabled
persons do some simple tasks, such as eating, cleaning the house and
even changing the channel on the TV set.

(2025·张家口高二上期末)Solo travel, or traveling alone,
wasn’t considered safe, ideal or fashionable for Indian women 25 years
ago.But that didn’t stop Dr Sudha Mahalingam. When she followed her
husband on his work trips abroad, she used the opportunities to make her
adventurous trips.
Two decades ago, Mahalingam quit her job in mainstream print
journalism and switched careers to take up energy research.Soon after,
she started receiving invitations to speak at international conferences in oil
producing countries and the world of travel opened up to her.Today, at
70, she has visited 66 countries across six continents, which she shares
on her blog Footloose Indian as well as in her book The Travel Gods Must
Be Crazy.
Owing to a busy schedule of managing work and family,
Mahalingam often had no time to organize her travel, so most of her early
trips were sudden and unplanned. She landed in the Czech Republic without
a valid (有效的) visa, faced the challenge of finding vegetarian food
in China, got accidentally locked in a museum in Iran and was caught
without proof of a yellow fever vaccination (疫苗接种) at the airport in
Nairobi, Kenya.
Though Mahalingam sometimes travels with friends, most of her
journeys are solo. Her most recent international adventure that stands out
was her trip to Borneo in Southeast Asia.“There were crawlies (爬虫)
everywhere and fallen leaves as high as one meter. You put your foot and
won’t know if a snake would stick itself around your leg or whether a
poisonous insect would bite you.It was pouring all the time.I have been to
the Amazon rainforest as well but it was a cakewalk compared to
Borneo,” she says.
Mahalingam has been addicted to different adventure sports too,
including diving and hang-gliding.She also made a difficult journey to
Everest base camp and, at the age of 66, went skydiving in Uluru,
Australia.

(2025·晋城高二上期末)A mountainous river valley in China’s
Hubei Province is home to one of the Asian countries’ most impressive
pieces of infrastructure — a highway bridge that runs through the middle of
a river.
Finalized in 2015, China’s “river highway” is widely regarded as an
infrastructural wonder.Designed to link the town of Gufuzhen in Xingshan
county to the main highway running between Shanghai and Chengdu in
southwestern China, this unique suspended highway doesn’t make much
sense at first glance. Why have a massive bridge built in the middle of the
Xiangxi River, when you could just have it run alongside the river on
land? In fact, there was already a road running along the river, which
meant it could obviously be done, so why not build the highway that
way?Well, apparently, Chinese engineers decided that a suspended highway running along the middle of the river was not only cheaper to build, but more efficient.
It turns out that building a highway through a complex mountainous
landscape like Hubei’s Xiangxi River Valley is harder than it sounds. It
involves digging miles of tunnels through rock, relocating people living
by the edge of the river, and affecting the local plants and animals. After
doing the maths, a team of engineers showed that building a highway
bridge over the river was both cheaper and faster than building the highway
on land.
Obviously, building a 4.4-kilometre suspended road that follows the
curves of the Xiangxi River wasn’t exactly a cheap undertaking, but it
was better than the alternative. The 440 million yuan($71 million) spent
on this unique river highway was apparently several times less than what a
land highway in this valley would have cost.Plus, it has shortened the
time it takes to drive from Gufuzhen to the main highway from over an
hour to just 20 minutes.
Since its inauguration (落成仪式) in 2015, China’s river
highway has become somewhat of a tourist attraction, with millions
travelling to Hubei to experience driving through the middle of a river
while taking in the breathtaking sights.

(2025·海南高二年级上学业水平诊断)The sounds of silence are
more appealing to some than others.Silence can be a safety zone, a place
where we process what’s happening around us and gather energy for
wherever the day may take us.Or silence can feel like a blank that needs to
be filled immediately.
Science is on the side of silence, though, with research supporting
it as a crucial factor in a healthy brain. This is especially “on the map” in
our noisy world, where we are rarely outside of the noise-generating
company of a mobile device, if not other people.
The hippocampus — the section of the brain that regulates memory,
emotion and learning — is the beneficiary of silence, according to several
studies. In one 2013 study, mice who were given two hours of pure
silence each day grew new cells — complete with functioning neurons —
in their hippocampus regions.
Other research has shown that noise activates the stress-response
functions in our brains, even while we are asleep.Exposure (暴露) to
noise activates the area of the brain called the amygdala to release stress
hormones into our bloodstream, which may result in an increase in heart
disease and tinnitus.
The good news is that exposure to silence activates the opposite
reaction, our nervous system’s “relaxation response.” One study even
found a greater calming effect in silence than with relaxing music.
The benefits of silence can be hard to recognize if we are struggling
with depression, loneliness and other feelings. But seeking out silence for
the purpose of restoration and renewal can help redefine quietness as a
profound, even spiritual pursuit.
So perhaps in this noisy world today, you can find a moment to
follow the advice of the medieval Persian poet Rumi: “Listen to silence. It
has so much to say.” Your brain will thank you, as will your spirit.

most areas, so getting around will be easy.Just make sure to have a local
mobile card to use map apps.Taxis and bike-sharing services are also
widely available.
As for preparations, pack warm clothes since it is very cold here in
winter.Don’t forget to bring a travel adapter for your devices, as our

成一篇完整的短文。
(2025·张家口高二上期末)We were all sitting around enjoying
another beautiful day of sunshine and warm weather when my brother,
Tim, was struck with an idea.“Why don’t we go for a boat ride this
afternoon on Lake Bitabee?” This idea met with general approval from
Arlene, his wife, and me.But Dad wanted to spend the afternoon fishing.
After lunch, Arlene and I got into Tim’s car and Tim put the boat on
the trailer (拖车) and drove off.Dad followed behind in the other car,
having decided to fish on Lake Victoria — which lay a few hundred yards
from Lake Bitabee.
When we arrived there, Tim, a more-than-capable driver, sent
Arlene and I to down the hill to the water’s edge in order to guide him as he
backed the boat trailer down the incline (斜坡) and around the small
bend.“Tell me when the water is halfway up the back tires, ” he told us.
Then the back of the boat trailer edged itself around the bend, and
Arlene and I began waving to Tim, pointing him a little to the right to get
him lined up properly.Slowly, little by little, Tim backed down the
incline to the relatively flat surface next to the water. We watched as the
trailer entered the water, frightening fish and bullfrogs away.Deeper and
deeper into the swamp (水洼) went the trailer, until — as Tim said —
the water was halfway up the back tires.I shouted out for Tim to stop the car.
My brother threw the car into park and jumped out of the driver’s
seat, eager to launch the boat into the water. Then I saw that the car was in
the deep water, clearly stuck in the mud (淤泥) .Then he got back into
the car and started the engine. It stuck fast, the tires whirling (旋转)
helplessly around in the muddy water.Shutting off the engine, Tim got out
of the vehicle, looking anxious and helpless.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
“I’ll get Dad,” I tried to comfort him.
Seeing the car still stuck in the water, Dad went up the hill to his car
and drove to a nearby farmhouse.
参考范文:
“I’ll get Dad,” I tried to comfort him.Tim nodded, his face pale
with worry.I quickly ran up the hill, my heart pounding. When I reached
Dad, who was just setting up his fishing gear near Lake Victoria, I
explained the situation breathlessly.Dad’s face darkened with concern,
but he didn’t waste a moment.Grabbing his tools, he followed me back to
the stuck car, his stride determined.
Seeing the car still stuck in the water, Dad went up the hill to his car
and drove to a nearby farmhouse. He returned shortly with a sturdy rope and
a friendly farmer who agreed to help.Together, they tied the rope to the
front of Tim’s car. With the farmer’s truck pulling and Dad guiding, they
managed to free the car from the muddy grip of the swamp.Tim sighed with
relief as the car finally lurched onto solid ground. We all learned a valuable
lesson about the unpredictability of nature and the importance of being
prepared.
