Hofstra University student Frankie Yandolino worked as a camp
counselor (夏令营辅导员) this past summer on Long Island, leading a
group of first-grade boys. She described a moment on a particular day when
she saw something wrong.“The boys were playing a game outside, and I
saw one of the kids fall down.I thought he was just playing, but I wasn’t
really sure — so I called his name a few times. When he didn’t answer
me, I ran over to him.”
“The first thing I saw was that he had thrown up on the floor.I flipped
(翻转) him over and he was blue in the face.I realized he wasn’t
breathing, and then he started to convulse (抽搐).”
Frankie’s training from her first aid class kicked in at this pivotal
moment.“There was no time to think,” she recalled.“I knew from class
that during a seizure (疾病发作) you’re supposed to flip the person on
their side to make sure they can’t hit anything and injure themselves.Once I
flipped him, he threw up more his mouth, but because he was on his
side, the vomit (呕吐物) was able just to get out.He was still blue at
this point, but he started coming out of the seizure then.”
By the time the seizure had passed, doctors were on the
scene.“There is no question that Frankie saved this boy’s life,” said
Professor Grace Catala, who taught the First Aid and Safety class.“I am
so impressed by Frankie’s level-headed and quick response, taking
thoughtful and appropriate action.”
Frankie recognizes the life-changing nature of the incident.“I was very
emotional about it for a long time and am finally able to tell the story
without breaking down.”And it has also changed Frankie in other ways.“I
know I want to go into something where I am able to help people.I’m
thinking of going into nursing. You can have those stories every day as a
nurse.”

his daughter the next time she visits and show her how to access his online
accounts if he has an unexpected health crisis.Gayle Williams, 69, plans
to tackle a project she’s been putting off for months: organizing all her
financial information. These seniors have been inspired to take these actions
by an innovative course for such “solo agers”: Aging Alone Together,
offered by Dorot, a social services agency in New York City.
More than 1,000 people have participated in the program since it
was launched in 2021.Dorot is working with partners across the country to
expand its reach. The program consists of six 90-minute, interactive
weekly sessions that focus on the seniors’ key concerns: building
communities of support, figuring out where to live, completing advance
care directives such as living wills, and getting financial and legal affairs
in order.
The program is to help participants overcome fear and hesitation when
planning for their uncertain futures.Practical tools, advice, and
resources are provided to motivate people to take action.Additionally, it
aims to develop a sense of community that promotes a “can do” attitude. As
Nisen emphasized, “Solo aging doesn’t mean aging alone; instead, it
means planning for the future.”
That message moved Davis deeply, a single artist in Manhattan,
who is facing the challenge of finding meaningful activities as arthritis

insurance and a rent-regulated apartment with an elevator, he feels lonely
without his artistic pursuit (追求).
“There are days that go by when I don’t say a word to anyone,”

First responders answer the calls that often come from people on their
worst days. Many times, children are caught in the middle of traumatic
(痛苦的), life-changing situations. One group of people in Lakeland
wanted to find a way to help officers give those children a small symbol of
comfort to ease the trauma.
A group of residents at The Estates at Carpenters in Lakeland decided
to handcraft (手工制作) wooden cars for officers and first responders to
give to children at a scene. The vision for the project came into focus in
2021.Almost two years later, it was almost complete.
“You have to take this eight-footer and then shave (削去) it
down, and finish it off, and sand it, and seal (封盖) it, and paint
it, and cut the stickers,” Mike Brink, one organizer of the project,
said.“Then glue the wheels and paint the wheels. It’s a time-intensive
project.” Each car starts as a piece of 4×4 wood.It takes residents around
eight to ten hours to craft each car.
The residents have made more than 100 cars each for the Lakeland
Police Department, and Lakeland Fire Department.“When we show up on
a scene, a lot of times it’s like the worst day ever for the people we
encounter,”Lt.Joe Parker with the Lakeland Police Department
said.Parker said having something like a customized toy car can help them
get down to a child’s level.“We’re responding there a lot of times,
because of some kind of difficult situation that the adults get into,” Parker
shared.“These little kids don’t have any control over that.So when we show
up and we’re able to have some kind of positive interaction in the middle of
whatever they’re going through, it means something.”
“It shows children that behind our uniforms (制服), we’re
humans too,” Parker said.“It takes a village to raise a kid.Well, it’s the
same thing in police work. You know, we can’t be everywhere all the
time.So we really do depend on the community.”

(2025·信阳高二上检测)My friend James did some first-aid
training last week to learn the fundamentals of CPR. And he asked if I’d
ever done the same.
“Yes,” I said, “...and no.”
Because, yes, I’ve attended several resuscitation sessions over the
years.16.( ) In fact, despite being shown all the key information at
various points in my career, I don’t think I can remember any of it now.
What’s the problem? Every time I’ve had this type of training, it’s
been a perfectly good opportunity to learn: an important topic, to be
taught well, to be in a focused environment, to be with plenty to see,
hear and do.I’ve always taken it seriously, too, and been focused. And
I’ve always come away with a wealth of information.17.( )
Here’s what I should have done — and what you can do now — to
make sure any training doesn’t go to waste.
18.( ) You might be surprised to find that you’ve got some
foundations of knowledge to build on.Pre-testing sparks your curiosity and
puts you in a frame of mind to remember.

bit of struggle to start embedding (把……嵌入) information in your

(2025·亳州高二上期末)Imagine showing up at a grocery store late
at night, only to find it completely unstaffed. In Tel Aviv, that’s exactly
what happened.Instead of taking advantage of the situation, customers
treated the shop like a “self-checkout” store taking charge and operating the
register themselves.
The incident occurred on a Friday night, the store’s peak shopping
hours. The cashier who was tasked with operating the register fell ill
suddenly and was rushed to hospital. The owner, Shiko Altid, didn’t find
out that the store was unstaffed for an entire hour, until one customer
called the shop’s security, who updated the owner Altid.
On hearing about the incident, Altid immediately checked the
security cameras, expecting to see a mess with tens of thousands of
products scattered (散乱的) throughout the store. But what he saw
surprised him — just minutes after the cashier left, the customers began
to deal with the products themselves.
“Two or three customers took charge, helping each other with
items,” Altid recalled.“Every time the cash drawer opened, they quickly
shut it to avoid any misunderstandings or theft. They even gave each other
the correct change from the register. It was amazing. We later checked both
the register and the cameras, and nothing was missing! No one left
without paying.I was in shock — this was Friday night in the center of Tel
Aviv, with the store completely open.It could have been a disaster.”
Later, Altid put up a sign in his store, reading “We’d appreciate it
if those who were at the register could contact us so we can express our
thanks properly and reward your efforts.” However, only one
customer — the one who had been in touch with security — reached out to
Altid and received a thank-you voucher (代金券).The rest simply paid
and left, not expecting or seeking any thanks for their actions.

(2025·武汉部分重点中学高二上期末)Life plays out much as it
always has on the great plains of Kenya’s Maasai Mara, but the latest
generation of Maasai are gradually changing the face of modern safari
(观兽旅行) — with greater permission for female guides and local
communities as a whole.
Trainee Brenda Senewakorian, with her long hair sweeping into a
bun, is among the new female guides recruited by a camp in an effort to
increase their numbers.Traditionally in rural communities, women would
be expected to cook and fetch water, among other domestic
chores. Now, female guides behind safari vehicle steering wheels (方向
盘) are an increasingly common sight in the Mara — largely due to
communities becoming more accepting, greater education from measures
such as the WTC and greater flexibility from employers around family
commitments.
“Animals are just like us,” Brenda remarks, “They just want to
take care of their young ones.” She’s a single mother who relies on the
support of her family to help raise her child. But she says she’s determined
to earn her own income.
Across the Mara, more camps are employing women. They’re in the
process of training their first female guides.Sophie, a veteran in the Mara
at the wheel, recalls that previously girls couldn’t go to school as parents
thought it a waste. But now, the elders recognize what they do, and that
everyone needs to contribute to the family income. The perception has
changed:“If men can drive, we can drive; if men can guide, we can
guide, too.”
It’s not long before Sophie finds a mother buffalo and her calf hiding
in the long grass. As tourists watch them, Sophie tells them the legendary
black rhino called Mary, who raised a new population of the creatures in
the area and inspired the Kenyan government to establish a protection
project.
While the essence of safari may remain the same — of watching wildlife out on the plains — change is coming to Kenya, as the next generation of Maasai guides pave their own path.
