Step 1|
Dear Editor,
[1]After I attended your summer camp about health and lifestyle
choices, I realised I hardly ever felt well, either physically or
mentally.I often felt sleepy and dizzy, and lacked passion. Most
worrying, though, I got the flu easily and experienced many
toothaches, too.
At the end of the camp I heard,“Change the world by changing
yourself.” This stimulated my motivation.A dentist once examined me
and told me that too much sugar in my meals had damaged my teeth and
health.I made up my mind to change two things in my life:to eat nothing
with sugar and to exercise regularly.
After that I stopped buying all the sweets, biscuits, and sugary
drinks that I used to have every day.[2]Whenever I went out with
friends, I brought snacks from home, things that didn’t have any
added sugar:fruit, nuts, dried meat, etc.
My exercise was very simple:I went outside every day for at least 30
minutes and did something active.Sometimes I played table tennis or
badminton with my cousins.Other times I jumped on my skateboard and
rode around my neighbourhood, or just took a long walk.
The results have been fantastic.I feel more dynamic and stronger than
ever, in both body and mind.I sleep soundly at night now.I no longer
suffer from a flu virus or toothaches either.Best of all, in my opinion,
is how I feel about myself.I feel like I’m in control of my own life.To
make choices about myself is within my own power.I CAN change
myself.I just need to try.
Yours truly,
Wang Lu
Dear Editor,
[3]As I took part in the summer camp about personal life choices, I
started to analyse my choices, especially what I did to relax and how it
was affecting my whole life.
After starting high school, I felt stressed out and always relaxed by
playing computer games.I got so absorbed that I played the games day and
night.Playing was fun, but I felt even more worn out afterwards! So
after the camp, I realised that it was very, very important to adjust my
lifestyle.I decided to take control of my life and find other ways to relax.
It was a big struggle not to join my friends in playing online games as
I’m mad for them. However, I realised that to succeed in quitting, I
had to replace it with something else.So I thought about what to try.Rock
climbing, bowling, watching comedies, and playing basketball were
the things I thought of doing instead.
Now my dad and I go rock climbing together monthly! It has
enhanced the quality of my life, improving my health and increasing my
happiness.I get refreshed through climbing, spend more time with my
dad, and get to meet new friends.
After six months of trying out new ways of relaxing, I feel much
more energetic.I feel that I can change myself for the better. And if that’s
true for me, then it might truly be possible to change the world for the
better. As Gandhi said,“Be the change you want to see in the world.”
Sincerely,
George Fielding
Step 2|
Most worrying,
especially,at least, very, very important等。
4. though, or, however, then, instead

A
When I was a teenager, I knew nothing about mental health and I
didn’t care about mental health. Why would I? Like my dad always
used to say, “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it!”
But, unfortunately my mental health did “break”.Aged 17 I
developed anorexia (神经厌食症).I didn’t realise at the time.When I
was 23, I was found severely clinically anorexic.I had fast-tracked
treatment at The Maudsley Hospital and went through 2.5 years of
treatment.People are always interested to know what helped me
recover.Actually, it was simple:comedy.
I’m a professional talk show edy, for me, began as a
hobby and has unbelievably progressed into a job.One of the things that
initially held my attention about talk show is how it plays with
pain.Humour became a way of understanding things, then a way of
explaining them. Now it’s become a way of helping other people.
The combination of being told to speak out about mental health and
writing comedies to play jokes on myself, actually turned into the best
type of treatment I could ever have had.Nothing has ever really helped
normalise a thought or feeling quite like a joke that makes people openly
say,“Me, too!”
That’s why I’ve come up with a six-week comedy course aimed at
people with mental health difficulties. It builds lasting friendships, fights
against loneliness and normalises conversations around mental health;
when audiences are laughing, they have to be listening, and when
they’re listening, they can learn. This unique opportunity enables
comedy to reach people in a completely different way to all the sob
stories, shocking statistics and dry documentaries (纪录片) about
mental illness, inspiring with positivity rather than turning to negativity.
Talk show was a must to my recovery. So, I want to pay that
forward and show other people that your mental health doesn’t have to be
“broken” before you can “fix it”.

The majority of people are unable to commit to a healthy long-term
lifestyle — although they are somehow willing to!There seems to be a
paradox (悖论) here.
We become more aware of the importance of leading a healthy
lifestyle on a regular basis.Yet, we just don’t manage to.We may
engage in a variety of short-term projects:1-week detox retreats or 1-
month severe diets. But the benefits these short-term activities produce are
quickly lost as we are dragged back to our “bad” habits in the longer
term. The inability to stick to a healthy lifestyle makes us feel frustrated
and unhealthy. What is the way out then?
The first step is to understand the problem more deeply:What are the
main obstacles of pursuing a healthy lifestyle? Which are the fundamental
aspects to a healthy lifestyle? How are they interconnected? If we
understand the problem and its components more deeply, we are one step
closer to coming up with a solution.
Surveys show how in 85% of cases in the US and Europe, the main
obstacles to pursuing a healthy lifestyle are to be found among lack of
awareness, time, self-control and guidelines.
“Humans tend to heavily discount the future, meaning things that
we have now are more valuable to us than things we’ll have in a few
years,” said A. Braun in 2019.For this reason, we cannot correctly
weigh the costs and consequences of choosing unhealthy habits today,
and we tend to give in to short-term pleasure, although this means
reducing longer-term benefits.
We deliberately choose to experience and enjoy short-term pleasure,
mainly because of a stress condition we may have, or because of
personality. The underlying reason for these behaviors is primarily stress,
as neuroscience discoveries in fact suggest, “In general, stress results
in habit behavior in humans, so dealing first and foremost with stress is
probably advisable when you are looking to make lasting
changes.Luckily, your brain can change throughout life.Decreasing
stress could finally help your brain become less easily influenced by
habit.”
