Listen to the monologue in the textbook again and fill in the blanks
with the words or sentences you hear.
We had stayed on Elephant Island for only a day, but Shackleton
was already worried.1.
. He decided to go to South Georgia
Island for help. He chose five members to join him on the trip and I was
one of them. I have been working on ships for my whole life and my
strong navigation skills could guide us across the dangerous
sea. However, to my surprise, Shackleton also picked the most difficult
and unfriendly member to join us on the trip.2.

.
He realised that many of us were too ill to
survive very long without rescue
I later learnt that he did
this because he wanted the group remaining on the island to stay cheerful
and positive until we returned
We sailed on very rough seas for days. The sea was so strong that it
was almost impossible for me to check our position. I was only able to use
my instruments three times during the trip. It scared me to think that we
might sail past South Georgia Island. 3.

Unfortunately, we did sail off-course for a while, meaning we
landed on the wrong side of South Georgia Island. We had to climb over
the mountains to get help. 4.

This would mean that we might
sail into the open sea and there would be no rescue
The mountains looked so steep that I
thought we might have to slide down them on our bottoms
When we arrived at the whaling station, Shackleton immediately
arranged for a rescue boat to return to Elephant Island. However, due to
the rough seas, we could not get near to the island. Shackleton became
worried about the men. He was very anxious and began to look extremely
old. We tried for three months to rescue the 22 men. Finally, we were
able to reach Elephant Island and luckily find everyone still alive!
5. .
They were overjoyed to see us and everyone began to cry
Part Ⅱ

the author and other crew members?( )

2. What can we learn from the passage?( )
A. They couldn’t find water, plants or sea animals.

C. They couldn’t find water, vegetables or fruit.
D. They needn’t worry about what they would eat.

3. How did their daily lives go on at Elephant Island?( )
A. They got water from melted ice and used animal fat to make fire.
B. They took oil from the ship to make fire.
C. They made fire out of branches.

Step 1|
THE REWARD FOR PERSEVERANCE
We watched as Shackleton and the boat sailed away from Elephant
Island. It was easy to imagine the danger ahead of them.Would they ever
return to find us? What might happen to them? What if they were
delayed? We felt so alone and desperate. But it was not for long. There
was nothing like a good dinner and some music to cheer us up.
Life fell into a regular pattern.Staying alive took all our time and
energy. For example, we needed water, and Elephant Island had
none.We found that we could melt ice from the ocean and drink the water
from it.But how could we make fire? There were no trees growing on
Antarctica and no oil, so the only fuel we could use was animal
fat.[1]This gave off oily, black smoke, but it stayed burning even in
strong winds.
Food was also a problem, as we did not find any vegetables or fruit
on the island. One of our group members, Lionel Greenstreet, noted in
his diary about how bored he was with the meals:“The food now is
pretty well all meat of sea creatures.” If it weren’t for sea animals, we
would all starve.[2]As a chef, it was my duty to cook, so I tried to
vary the meals in whatever way I could. But it was difficult.
We had to be careful not to go outside too often, as the changing
temperatures could make us ill.It was almost as dangerous to become too
hot from wearing too many clothes as to become too cold from wearing too
few.The sweat could freeze very quickly. Many of us also became ill from
the black smoke of the animal fat we burnt for our fires. It damaged our
eyes and burnt our lungs.
The twenty-two of us lived like this in the cold for four months. Our
discipline and team spirit kept us optimistic and helped us deal with our
fears in a positive and successful way.We also celebrated our birthdays,
festivals, and even the times when we caught a sea animal. This was an
episode in my life that I would never forget.
[3]When we were finally rescued, we felt such relief and joy that
many of us could not hide our tears. We were at last free to go home to
warm beds, good food, and the care of our family and friends. Our
optimism and faith in Shackleton had helped us persevere in staying
alive. And he paid us back by his commitment to save us from a slow but
painful death.

Helen Thayer, one of the greatest explorers of the 20th century,
loves challenges. She says, “I like to see what’s on the other side of
the hill.” She has gone almost everywhere to do that.
In 1988, at the age of 50, she became the first woman to travel
alone to the North Pole. She pulled her own sled piled with 160 pounds of
supplies, and during her trip no one brought her fresh supplies.
Accompanied only by her dog Charlie, she survived cold weather and
meetings with polar bears. In fact, Charlie saved her life when one of
them attacked her. Near the end of her trip, a forceful wind blew away
the majority of her supplies. The last week of the trip, she survived on a
handful of nuts and a little water each day.
Helen goes to challenging places not only for adventure, but also for
education. Before her Arctic journey, she started a website called
Adventure Classroom. On the site, she shares her adventures in order to
motivate (激发) students. She explains, “Although kids often see
the world in a negative way, without hope for their future, we work to
inspire them to set goals, plan for success and never give up.”
Helen grew up in New Zealand. Her parents were athletes and
mountain climbers. Following her parents’ example, she climbed her
first mountain at 9. Later, she climbed the highest mountains in North
and South America, the former USSR and New Zealand.
In 1996, she took on another challenge — the Sahara Desert. She
and her husband, Bill, walked 2,400 miles across it! In 2001, she
and Bill traveled on foot from west to east through the Gobi Desert in
Mongolia. They hope to travel to Sichuan and Xizang in China to study
pandas this year.
Helen plans to continue taking trips. She’ll use her explorations,
writing, photography and environmental work to create programs for her
Adventure Classroom website. She wants to inspire her students never to
stop facing challenges!

B
In 1880, fourteen-year-old Matthew Henson loved to hear sailors
tell tales of their exciting lives at sea. The travel, the adventure, the
danger, and the steady pay were all attractive to young Henson. One day
he made up his mind. Baltimore was the nearest large seaport. The next
morning he set out on the forty-mile journey to seek work on a sailing
ship.
In Baltimore, Henson found a job as a cabin boy on a beautiful ship
called the Katie Hinds. For the next five years, Henson sailed around the
world. By the time he left the Katie Hinds in 1885, Henson was well
educated and had become an excellent seaman.
Unable to find work anywhere else, Henson took a job in a hat shop
in Washington, D. C. One day in 1887, a man came in to buy a hat.
The man, Lieutenant Robert Peary, asked the owner if he knew anyone
with experience at sea. Peary would soon travel to South America for the
US government. He needed experienced men to accompany him.
The shop owner knew about his young employee’s skills and
experience on ocean voyages, so he introduced Peary to Henson. Henson
and Peary soon found they had a great deal in common, including their
love of the sea.
Using his map-reading and sailing skills, Henson proved himself to
be a worthy and intelligent seaman. One day Peary told Henson about his
real dream: to be the first man to stand on “the top of the world” at the
North Pole. He asked Henson to help him make his dream come true.
Over the next five years, the two explorers made two trips together
to the Arctic. However, they were not able to reach the pole either time.
In 1908, Peary and Henson were ready to make their final attempt at
reaching the North Pole. Both men were over forty years old. The years of
hardship and suffering in the arctic cold had taken their toll on both men.
This would be their last chance.
In April 1909, Henson’s instruments showed they were standing at
the North Pole. Together Henson and Peary planted the American flag in
the snow.
In later years, Robert Peary and Henson were greatly honored for
their achievement. Today, the two friends and fellow explorers lie in
heroes’ graves not far apart in the Arlington National Cemetery.
