Growing up in Cyprus, Elena felt she was different from other
girls — she was interested in biology. But it was a family tragedy that
helped shape her determination to major in medicine.“My parents lost
their first child because he had Down’s syndrome. He passed away when
I was about seven years old,” she says.“And I guess that’s always
been playing on my mind and I gradually formed the idea of studying
medicine.”
At about 14, she set her sights on studying medicine in the UK.
“Despite being a student from a foreign country, I achieved A-levels in
all my subjects, considered suitable for medicine,” she says. Now as a
consultant surgeon at one of the busiest major trauma (创伤) units in
England, Elena has spoken of her successful career and the challenges
she has encountered as a female doctor including sometimes having to
remind patients suspicious of her that “I am the surgeon”.
Elena’s main job is working with the major trauma team, but she
is also involved in the team dealing with patients that have severe surgical
issues.“When I’m a consultant, I have a position of responsibility not
only towards my patients, but also towards the team that I cooperate
with,” she says.Working hard, she has never experienced prejudice
from other male surgeons, who show great respect for her.
Elena does not shy away from the fact that being a woman has
sometimes felt like a disadvantage.“Find what you love doing day after
day, because your professional career is a long time, and it takes a
lot — probably like 20 or 30 years of your life. Therefore, it’s of great
significance to do what you are fond of and then just go for it,” she
says.

Throughout the history of the arts, the nature of creativity has
remained constant to artists. No matter what objects they select, artists
are to bring forth new forces and forms that cause change — to find poetry
where no one has ever seen or experienced it before.
Landscape is another unchanging element of art.It can be found from
ancient times through the 17th-century Dutch painters to the 19th-century
romanticists and impressionists. In the 1970s, Alfred Leslie, one of the
new American realists, continued this practice.Leslie sought out the
same place where Thomas Cole, a romanticist, had produced paintings
of the same scene a century and a half before.Unlike Cole who insists on a
feeling of loneliness and the idea of finding peace in nature,Leslie paints
what he actually sees.In his paintings, there is no particular change in
emotions and he includes ordinary things like the highway in the
background. He also takes advantage of the latest developments of colour
photography to help both the eyes and the memory when he improves his
painting back in his workroom.
Besides, all art begs the age-old question:What is real? Each
generation of artists has shown their understanding of reality in one form
or another. The impressionists saw reality in brief emotional effects, the
realists in everyday subjects and in forest scenes, and the Cro-Magnon
cave people in their naturalistic drawings of the animals in the ancient
forests. To sum up, understanding reality is a necessary struggle for
artists of all periods.
Over thousands of years, the function of the arts has remained
relatively constant.Past or present,Eastern or Western, the arts are a
basic part of our immediate experience.Variety and diversity are the faces
of art, and together they express the basic need and hope of human
beings.

C. It is expressed in a fixed artistic form.
D. It is lacking in modern works of art.

D
I was recently on a crowded flight home from California, and
holiday travel was busy and chaotic.I counted three different occasions of
children having emotional breakdowns — one at the security checkpoint
and two on the plane.I couldn’t help but notice people in line
commenting,“Can’t that mom get a handle on her child?” “That
kid needs some discipline! ” ...These people seemed to suggest that
these awful holiday travel circumstances should somehow be tackled with
grace and ease.
To her credit, the mother of the toddler (学步儿童) in the
security line kept her cool despite the sweat on her brow and her reddened
face.As a mom who was constantly peppered with comments from well-
intentioned friends who thought they were in possession of the recipe for
perfect parenthood, I was all too familiar with her situation.
I might have been one of those judgmental folks before having my
own children.Today I’m much more understanding.Raising children is
hard, and every child and family situation is extremely unique. The
reality of our hustle-culture and the lack of resources prohibits many
people from being the kind of parents they would really like to
be.Judgment certainly isn’t helpful, only causing a feeling of shame.
As is echoed in the article Reimagining Shame, the author Jan
Bonhoeffer states,“Left unexamined, shame can cloud our self-
view, leaving us convinced that our worth is conditional. It whispers
lies: ‘You’ll never be good enough.’ And when shame continues,
it can lead to self-abandonment.” The role of motherhood is both
complex and challenging, so any attack on a mother will get her loaded
with shame, and shame is disempowering. The last thing women need is
more disempowerment.
Whoever coined the phrase, “Everyone you meet is facing an
invisible battle.Be kind, ” was accurate. The least we can do is suspend
our tendency to judge one another, replace it with a mindset of
compassion, and resolve to do a better job empowering the other women
in our lives through intentional action or advocacy.

Yawning (打哈欠) is an involuntary act of opening the mouth and
taking a deep breath of air which is then breathed out.36.( ), it is

simple bodily function may also be a sign of underlying health
concerns. Here are five things your consistent yawns might be trying to tell
you.
37.( ).More specifically, your brain needs rest.Yawning

natural radiator system.
You’re tired.Getting only a little sleep causes the brain temperature
to increase.38.( ).Unfortunately, while yawning may help you
focus for some time, it is not a total cure for the tiredness you feel.
It’s easily spread.Sometimes, you might be yawning because you
saw someone else do so.39.( ).
  It’s a side effect.40.( ).A common one is selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, a kind of medications usually
used to treat anxiety or depression.

with heart disease, disorder of the nervous system, liver failure or
hypothyroidism.

It was Friday, and the clock was ticking, with only 15 minutes left
until lunch. The classroom was filled with a sense of anticipation as Mrs
Stretch announced that it was time for the much-loved game, Around the
World.
Around the World was Eddie’s absolute favorite classroom
game.He loved racing against a classmate to solve a math problem and
calling out the answer.Eddie won against some kids and lost against
others.Eddie’s best friend Michael never lost a math challenge. He was
the champion of Around the World in the class and could even beat a fourth
grader.Under Michael’s influence, the entire class was motivated to
study harder and developed a newfound love for math.
“Talia, you start,” said Mrs Stretch.Talia was new to the
class.Last week, she had watched how the game was played, but this
would be her first time playing.Talia jumped up and went over to Luka’s
desk.Luka stood up too.“Twelve times two,” said Mrs Stretch. There
was a pause as Talia and Luka raced to work out the multiplication (乘
法) problem in their heads.
“Twenty-four!” Talia called out first.“Right,” said Mrs
Stretch.Talia was the winner so she moved on to challenge the next
student.Luka sat down.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t long before Talia had beaten several
classmates. Then Talia was in front of Eddie’s desk.
“Six times seven?” asked Mrs Stretch.“Forty-two!” Talia
shouted, a second before Eddie could.Eddie was disappointed he had
lost to Talia, but he was happy he also knew the right answer.
It was thrilling to watch the game going on.Talia seemed to be
unstoppable. Finally, Talia got to Michael. He was the last one she’d
have to beat to be today’s champion. At that time, the whole classroom
was charged with an electric intensity as everyone held their breath.
“Eight times twelve,” Mrs Stretch said, her voice cutting
through the thick silence.

“Ninety-six!” the answer swiftly escaped Talia’s lips.

  “Ninety-six!” the answer swiftly escaped Talia’s lips.Michael
stood there, a look of shock on his face. For a moment, the classroom
was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Then, a huge cheer erupted
from the students.Talia had beaten the undefeated champion! Michael
forced a smile, but it was clear he was disappointed. After class, he sat
alone at his desk, lost in thought.Eddie noticed and decided to talk to
him.
“No, Michael. We didn’t cheer against you,” Eddie
said.“We were just excited for Talia. She’s new, and she worked
really hard. You are still the best in our hearts. You inspired us to love
math. And now, Talia has shown us that there’s always someone
amazing out there.Let’s be happy for her and keep improving
ourselves.” Michael looked up at Eddie, and his frown slowly turned
into a smile.“You’re right,” he said.“I should be proud of
Talia. And I will work even harder to be better.” From that day on, the
class became even more enthusiastic about math, with everyone inspired
by each other’s progress.
