Carey made a great academic achievement in high school and looked forward to attending Harvard and other top schools. But he could not afford the application fees, let alone school fees. But with a passion for business, Carey dreamed of attending a college in the Northeast so he could be close to New York City and other major business centers.
In the process of his application, he was determined to deal with it by himself. He looked at hundreds of websites, checking scholarship requirements. Many scholarships had very specific qualifications that he didn’t meet. But Carey had 600 volunteer hours and started a nonprofit organization which organized volunteer opportunities for students when he was in high school. So he searched for scholarships that looked for excellent grades combined with leadership and community service.
Soon, he got the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which covers school fees from a bachelor's to a doctor’s degree. A $20,000 scholarship from Coca-Cola followed. He also received a $20,000Horatio Alger Scholarship and the $10,000 Axa Achievement Scholarship. And smaller awards just kept coming. In the end, he had amazing success, receiving 34 scholarships worth $1.3million—enough to pay for years of school, plus cover his living expenses with some leftover to invest.
Carey has used the money for schooling, room and board, daily supplies, travel for interviews, and other needs. After appearing at national conferences and in the media, hundreds of students and parents have emailed and called for advice, which inspired Carey, now a business major at Drexel, to make a mobile-phone app called Scholly—short for “scholarships”—to help other teens get scholarship money.
Though the app had thousands of downloads, Carey and his colleagues decided to keep the price only at 99 cents because their purpose was more public service than profit. As for his career plans, he has the goal of a true enterprise: “I do not have to get a job when I graduate.”
24. What did Carey do when he applied for scholarships
A. He started a nonprofit organization. B. He took part in community service.
C. He matched his strengths with the criteria. D. He checked requirements with volunteers.
25. Why does Carey develop Scholly
A. To appeal for more downloads. B. To help other teens make apps.
C. To raise funds for his own schooling. D. To facilitate scholarship application.
26. What does Carey intend to do for his career
A. Working for a charity. B. Starting his own business.
C. Maintaining his current job. D. Getting a high paid job.
27. Which of the following best describe Christopher Carey
A. Ambitious and generous. B. Tolerant and diligent.
C. Creative and humble. D. Stubborn and adventurous.

High school students perform better on tests if they are in a classroom with a view of a green space, instead of a windowless room or a room with a view of built-up space, according to research from the University of Illinois Department of Landscape Architecture.
“It is the first to show a relationship between studying with a green view and students’ performance.” said William Sullivan, head of the research team. “It’s a substantial finding that if you have a green view outside your window, you’ll do better on tests.” Sullivan hopes the results of their research will lead to some changes. “Changes in school design, for example, would be a much better thing than any of the things we spend money on in secondary education today,” Sullivan said.
The research included 94 students at five central Illinois high schools. Students were randomly assigned to one of three kinds of classrooms—windowless, with a window looking out onto built-up space, or with a window looking out onto green space. Each kind of classroom had almost the same size and layout(布局).The students took part in one-on-one experiments in which they did 30 minutes of activities that included a proofreading(勘校) exercise, a speech and a math exercise. Following the activities the students were given an attention test which asked them to repeat a series of numbers.
The findings: Students did better on both study activities and the attention test if they were in a classroom with a green view, Sullivan said.
The researchers suggest their findings can help planners and policymakers improve students’ health and learning. For example, planners can choose places for new schools that already have trees, or they can plant many trees on the site; architects can design classroom windows so they look onto green spaces.
28. What did the study find out about high school students
A. They like to have green plants in their classrooms.
B. They will get better grades when studying in different classrooms.
C. Changes in school design will influence their attitudes towards teachers.
D. A green view through a classroom window can improve their performance.
29. What does the underlined word “substantial” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Early. B. Important. C. Useless. D. Possible.
30. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How the study was carried out. B. The result of the study.
C. Why the study was different. D. The purpose of the study.
31. What do the researchers think of the study
A. It has drawn public attention to education. B. It can play a guiding role in school planning.
C. It has encouraged students to get close to nature. D. It needs more support from high school teachers.
D
Automation is a widespread term. Nearly everyone agrees that people will be working less once automatic machinery came in. For optimists, this is a promise of liberation: At last humanity would be freed from constant toil, and we could all devote our days to more refined pursuits. But others see a threat: Millions of people would be thrown out of work, and desperate masses would roam the streets. Looking back from 50 years hence, the controversy over automation seemed a quaint and curious episode. The dispute is never resolved.
A. J. Hayes, a leader(and no relation to me), wrote in 1964: Automation is not just a new kind of mechanization but a revolutionary force capable of overturning our social order. Whereas mechanization made workers more efficient—and thus more valuable—automation threatens to make them superfluous(过剩的)—and thus without value. The opinions I have cited here represent extreme positions, and there are also many milder views. But I think it's fair to say that most early students of automation, including both critics and enthusiasts, believe the new technology would lead us into a world where people worked much less.
As for economic consequences, worries about unemployment have certainly not gone away—not with job losses in the current recession approaching 2 million workers in our country alone. But recent job losses are commonly attributed to causes other than automation, such as competition from overseas or a roller-coaster financial system. In any case, the vision of a world where machines do all the work and people stand idly by has simply not come to pass.
The spread of automation outside of the factory has altered its social and economic impact in some curious ways. In many cases, the net effect of automation is not that machines are doing work that people used to do. Instead we've dispensed with the people who used to be paid to run the machines, and we've learned to run them ourselves. These trends contradict almost all the expectations of early writers on automation, both optimists and pessimists. So far, automation has neither liberated us from the need to work nor deprived us of the opportunity to work. Instead, we're working more than ever.
What about trades closer to my own vital interests Will science be automated Technology already has a central role in many areas of research; for example, genome sequences could not be read by traditional lab-bench methods. Replacing the scientist will presumably be a little harder than replacing the lab technician, but when a machine exhibits enough curiosity and tenacity, I think we'll just have to welcome it as a companion in zealous research. And if the scientist is elbowed aside by an automaton, then surely the science writer can't hold out either. I'm ready for my 15-hour workweek.
32. What does the writer mainly want to convey in paragraph 1
A. automation results in unemployment on B. the issue of automation is still in discussion
C. automation does more harm than good D. automation brings in much convenience in life
33. According to A. J. Hayes, we can infer ____.
A. automation is more valuable than what we imagine
B. the disadvantages of automation far outweigh the advantages
C. automation is a revolutionary force may causing people worthless.
D. the new technology would lead people into working much less
34. What does the underlined word possibly mean
A. put…down for. B. set…free from.
C. bring…into. D. take…away from.
35. What can we conclude from this passage
A. People needn't work so hard due to automation.
B. Automation should be accepted reasonably in development.
C. Traditional labor force will be replaced in the near future.
D. Automation results in more job losses in the writer's country.

A few senior high students were going to Fort Lauderdale with sandwiches and drinks in the paper bags, dreaming of the golden beaches as the gray cold of New York vanished behind them. As the bus passed through New Jersey, they began to notice a man, who sat in front of them, dressed in a plain, ill-fitting suit, never moving, his dusty face masking his age. He fixed his eyes on the photo in his hands, frozen into some personal cocoon of silence.
Deep into the night, outside Washington, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson’s, and everybody got off except the man. He sat rooted in his seat, and the students began to wonder about him, trying to imagine his life: perhaps he was a sea captain, a runaway from his wife, an old soldier going home. When they went back to the bus, one of the students sat beside him and introduced himself.
“We’re going to Florida,” the student said brightly. “I hear it’s really beautiful.”
“It is,” the man said quietly, as if remembering something he had tried to forget.
“Want some bread ” the student said. He smiled and took a piece. He thanked him and retreated again into his silence. After a while, the man told his story slowly and painfully.
His name was Vingo, he had been in prison in New York for the past four years, and now he was going home. “ When I was in prison I wrote to my wife,” he said “I told her that I was going to be away for a long time, and that if she couldn’t stand it, if the kids kept asking questions, if it hurt too much, she could just forget me, I’d understand,”
“Last week, knowing I would be free, I wrote her again. We used to live in Brunswick and there’s a big oak tree just as you come into town. I told her that if she would take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I’d get off and come home with her. If she didn’t accept me, forget it, no handkerchief, and I’d go on through.”
“Wow,” the student exclaimed and gazed at the photo in his hands. All the other students were into it.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

第二节(满分25分)
In the photo, the students saw a young woman with two little children standing before an oak tree. “What a lovely woman and cute kids.” “Yeah, she is a smart woman who can always make our small house warm and comfortable.” Vingo murmured. With Brunswick approaching, Vingo stopped staring at the photo, tightening his face, as if protecting himself against another disappointment. The students took over window seats, waiting for the coming of the oak tree. Then Brunswick was ten miles, and then five. All the people opened their eyes wide, waiting for a miracle.
With the oak tree in sight, the students were up out of their seats, wild with joy. But Vingo sat there, amazed. The oak tree was covered with yellow handkerchiefs, twenty or thirty of them, maybe hundreds, flying in the wind. The oak tree stood like a banner of welcome, blowing in the wind. All the students couldn’t hold back their excitement, shouting, crying, doing small dances or shaking fists in triumph. As the students remained thrilled, Vingo slowly rose from his seat, holding himself tightly, and made his way to the front door of the bus.

W: I tend to keep a professional distance. It’d be too easy to let friendships start influencing the way I run races.
M: So do you have any favorite free time activities
W: When I was a kid, I used to fly my kite at the top of the hills. But now, skiing’s something that I get into quite a bit when I’m free. I’ve always enjoyed active things, and never really been much of a reader.
Text 10
W: Good afternoon, I’m Ella, my blog is about clothes for students. I didn’t get many hits at first,
but one newspaper wrote something about me, and more people started to look at the blog. Then, a local TV channel interviewed me for a program. Since then, the blog has developed even faster, so I’m no longer working alone. A photographer agreed to take some shots for the site. To better show the clothes, my brother Eden offered to be my model. And I considered hiring a make-up artist. Luckily, Bonnie, my talented friend, helped me.
I make sure I include all kinds of clothes to suit a range of tastes for my readers. I try and think about their budgets, too. Most of the clothes I talk about are readily available. As well as showing the latest styles, I also feature classic clothes I’ve found in second-hand shops. Believe it or not, those from the 1920s are the richest sources of ideas for my recent blog posts, although people enjoyed the clothes from the 1970s most. I also got positive comments about stuff from the 1980s.
