Sleep-deprived (缺乏睡眠的) human parents know the value of a quick nap, but it turns out Chinstrap penguins have us all beat. When nesting, these Antarctic birds take four-second-long “microsleeps,” a strategythatallowsparentstokeepconstantwatchovervulnerableeggsand chicks, all while amounting to 11 hours of total sleep a day, according to a new study.
(
{#{QQABRYaEggCAAIJAABgCQQVQCgKQkBGAAIoGhFAMsAAAiAFABCA=}#}
)It’s hard to sleep in a community of nesting Chinstrap penguins. The Antarctic summer sun provides 24/7 daylight. And then there’s the eye-watering smell of ammonia mixed with rotting fish and penguin wastes. “It made me dizzy,” says co-study leader Won Young Lee, a researcher at the Korea Polar Research Institute.
Likeotherpenguins,Chinstrapparentstaketurnsguardingthenest.Whileonebirdprotects
the chicks, the partner hunts at sea. Then the penguins trade places. For two months between egg laying and fledging, it’s a series of nonstop demands.
To study how penguins manage to accomplish all this and get the necessary sleep,Leeandhis
team first stuck biologgers, small battery-powered devices, to the backs of 14 nesting penguins of both sexes. This device functions like a smart watch, measuring physical activity, pulse, and the
ocean depths of hunting birds. Next, the team captured each of the penguins, an esthetizing(麻醉)
them to attach the devices and temporarily implant electrodes into their skull to measure brain activity. When an animal is awake, the brain constantly buzzes with activity. During sleep, however, brain waves slow down and stretch out. When Lee started reviewing the data, he was surprised to
discover the birds slept in four-second intervals(间隔) throughout the day and night while caring
for their egg or chick.
While the data is convincing, Cirelli, a neuroscientist at the University of Wisconsin who wasn’t involved in the study, notes that the researchers only studied the penguins during nesting periods, making it impossible to tell if the birds microsleep when they’re not parenting. The other challenge is understanding how microsleep impacts the brains and bodies of the penguins. Sleep deprivation in humans causes a range of health problems, and it’s not clear whether penguins experience this, too.
What does the underlined word "vulnerable" in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Exposed. B. Broken.
Stolen. D. Genuine.
How did the researchers collect data for the study
They stuck smart watches to the back of penguins.
They recorded the penguins’ waking and sleep duration.
They captured the penguins and placed devices into their nests.
They monitored their physical and brain activity using different devices.
What’s the main idea of the last paragraph
The prospect of the research.
The limitations of the research.
Microsleep is common in parenting penguins.
Microsleep may cause health problems to penguins.
What can be a possible title for the text
A short-term strategy to deal with lack of food
A short-term strategy to cope with extreme weather
A 4-second nap: penguin parents survive on “microsleeps”
A 4-second nap: Chinstrap penguins seek to hunt for enough food
D
If you use the internet, you’ve probably heard of a filterbubble(过滤气泡). Internet sites and social media platforms use algorithms (算法)that show you content based on your previous interactions, likes, and shares. Over time, this creates a filter bubble where you only see content that
agrees with your interests and beliefs, which serves to convince you that your beliefs are true. But what you might not know is that in similar fashion, your brain has several mechanisms to filter information, creating personal filter bubbles that deeply shape how you live your life.
Self-created filterbubbles happen through various cognitive processes, and they have multiple
consequences. They shape your experience of what’s happening by forming a lens(镜片) through
which you see and interpret the world. On the internet, because things are being presented based on
past user history, no two people get the same results when they search for something on Google or open their news feed. In real life, no two people are experiencing an event or seeing a situation in
the exact same way, because we all bring our own past experiences and biases(偏见) to situations,
causing us to process them differently.
Filterbubbles can cause you to stay stuck in self-created and often self-limiting patterns of thought and behavior. If you’ve ever wondered why change is so hard, it’s because your mental filter bubbles make it difficult to see different possibilities. If you hold the belief that you’re not someone who can have a high-paying job, you won’t look for one and you’ll only seek out and see jobs that match up with what you think you’re worth.
Filterbubbles can also prevent critical thinking and can lead to a limited and biased view of
the world, where people don’t consider alternative viewpoints and don’t engage with others outside of their own circles. When we only consume information that confirms our preexisting beliefs and values, we don't question the truth of that information or properly evaluate the evidence.
While you can’ t prevent your brain from creating selective filterbubbles, you can become
more aware so that you don’t have to be limited or trapped by them.
What can we learn about filter bubbles
They have little effect on us.
They shape our interpretations of the world.
They are frequent occurrences and have little effect on us.
They assist us in making friends with like-minded individuals.
How do filter bubbles impact individuals' ability to embrace change
They facilitate open-mindedness and flexibility.
They help individuals adapt quickly to new situations.
They prevent individuals from successfully securing a job.
They make individuals resistant to seeking out new opportunities.
What might the author continue talking about
Barriers to overcoming filter bubbles.
Benefits of recognizing filter bubbles.
Ways to avoid getting trapped in the filter bubbles.
Examples of your brain creating mental filter bubbles.
Which word can describe the influence of filter bubbles on people
A. Negative .B. Indirect. C. Positive. D. Unclear.

Moreover, excuses are not going to keep you away from regrets in your later life. If you delay diligence because of your family responsibility, it simply means your goals are not in your priority list, which is why excuses are coming. ____35____.
Finally, diligence is not the birthright of some privileged people but an option. ____36____. Otherwise, you might unconsciously develop the habit of not being serious about bigger tasks as well. So now is the right time to start striving to be diligent in everything you do and ensure your success.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement (实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

Dear fellows,
It is my pleasure and privilege to be here and present my thoughts on how to be responsible. It is universally acknowledged that responsibility is a key factor contributing to our success, without which our life will be like a ship without an anchor, at the mercy of the sea.
The first and foremost step to develop a sense of responsibility is to be aware of the significance of responsibility, because our attitude determines our altitude. Moreover, don’t avoid facing the consequences of our mistakes and learn from them to better ourselves. This will greatly help us build an increasingly better sense of responsibility. Last but not least, manage our own business and never shrink from our duty, stand on the solid ground and strive to make steady progress towards our goals.
Minor as assuming responsibility may sound, it is the foundation of our existence and therefore helps us better practice core socialist values. Thanks for your attention.

Suddenly,a boy fell off the back of the bus.He hit the road face down and rolled over.He lay motionless in the middle of the road as the bus drove away quickly. The cars directly behind the bus braked to avoid the boy,but none stopped.I knew that if the boy was bleeding into his brain,he could die soon.I stopped my car. I lifted his unconscious body into my car with the help of some passersby and raced back to the hospital.
The next day, when I went to see the boy,all his family got up,with grateful smiles on their faces. The mother held my hands and started weeping."Son,you are an angel,"she repeated over and over again. After comforting her,I went over to the boy.He managed to smile and squeeze my hand.No words were spoken between us-none was needed.I spent the rest of the day in a state of excitement, the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced.Driving home that evening,I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.My career path became crystal clear at that moment.

Text 10
A study done in the United States found that the average child receives $ 3. 70 per tooth. Often
the story goes something like this: children put their lost teeth under a pillow and receive money in exchange. Today we will discuss some different aspects of the Tooth Fairy. In early European
traditions, a child’s lost tooth was buried. Families believed that this could save their child from a
hard life in their next life. Vikings used to take their children’s lost teeth in battle for good luck and some people buried their teeth out of fear of witches. These were some earlier ideas that connected teeth with good luck. The current tale of a Tooth Fairy usually involves an animal. There are many different versions depending on culture and time. The most common theme is associated with a mouse or a rabbit, but others include cats, dogs, and even squirrels. The reasons for the different animals vary. For example, a mouse has been connected to the Tooth Fairy tale because its teeth continue to grow for the entire life.
