The 97-year-old botanist, Margaret Bradshaw, is the chief caretaker of Teesdale’s rarest flowers.“Everything about Teesdale is unique,” says Bradshaw with pride — and the authority of someone who has just written a 288-page book on the subject.Bradshaw has been recording rare plants here since the early 1950s and has witnessed great decreases. Her data was the first to prove that — and the need to do something about it.
The main reason for the decrease of these plants is an unusual one.The number of sheep in Teesdale had been reduced by half by 2000, as the uplands were generally believed there were too many sheep.Bradshaw says while sheep are hunted in some upland areas, reducing herding in Teesdale has been destructive.Longer grass overshadows the delicate (娇嫩) flowers, taking away the light they need to grow.As a result of her findings and her work with farmers who herd the land — as well as Natural England, which manages it — sheep numbers are increasing and the timing of herding is being carefully managed. This has led to the partial recovery of some plants.
At 93, she set up Teesdale Special Flora Research and Conservation Trust to record rare plants.A keen horse rider, at 95, she did a 55-mile horse journey across Teesdale, raising almost $10,000 for the Trust. When asked about the secret to longevity, “Just keep going,” she says.“Keep at it.Don’t sit down and just watch TV.”
“I recognise I’m getting older and I’ve been trying to get more people to take over and do the records. They don’t believe I won’t be here forever,” Bradshaw says.Despite Bradshaw’s guardianship of this land, and the love and energy she has put into saving it, the future here is unknown. The last words of her book speak to this endless loss.“This is our heritage, this unique plant species, mine and yours,” she writes.“In spite of trying, I have failed to prevent its decrease, now it is up to you.”
24.What is Margaret Bradshaw’s main work with the rare plants?( )
A.Writing a book. B.Preventing their decrease.
C.Collecting their data. D.Directing farmers to grow plants.
25.What contributed to the reduction of rare plants in Teesdale?( )
A.Not enough sheep. B.Lack of fund.
C.Poor management. D.Too many sheep.
26.What can we learn from Bradshaw’s words in the last paragraph?( )
A.Unity brings strength. B.Many hands make light work.
C.Youthful at heart, regardless of age. D.Advance what the forerunners began.
27.Which might be a suitable title for the text?( )
A.Teesdale:Home to Rare Plants B.Battling for Teesdale’s Wildflowers

To understand the effect of ice melting around the world, we first have to understand what an ice sheet actually is.Covering 5.4 million square miles in Antarctica and 656,000 square miles in Greenland, an ice sheet is actually a huge land of ice from the Ice Age.These sheets form in areas where snow that falls in winter does not melt entirely over the summer. This ice, home to different species of animals, is now melting at a rate that cannot support the life it currently holds.
Many of these creatures rely on ice sheets as land for resting, hunting and protection, yet as the size decreases, they are forced out of their homeland in search of other land on which to live.Often this means journeys to search for food and an imbalanced ecosystem happens when different species are forced together onto the coast.
Since the 1990s, the deer population has dropped by 56 per cent — climate change has caused warmer temperatures over winter, setting off rainfall instead of snow, which freezes more quickly underfoot and makes it harder to walk and search for food.In the summer, frozen layers of land melts and releases trapped diseases which bring death to animals.A similar situation has fallen on the polar bears who suffered a 40 per cent population loss between 2001-2010.
Quite apart from these problems, the threat of sea levels rising if the ice caps were to disappear is approaching. If the Greenland Ice Sheet melted, the sea level would rise around six meters, and if the Antarctic Ice Sheet melted, sea levels would rise by around 20 feet.As a matter of fact, sea levels have risen about eight inches since 1880, three of which we’ve gained over the last 25 years. This seemingly small amount has already caused dangerous flooding, loss of farmland and more deadly storms.
While we’re still a long way from losing the ice sheets all together, we’ve already lost too much and if we don’t take climate change seriously now, we will certainly hit the point of no return.
28.What is an ice sheet according to the passage?( )
A.It is an area where ice never melts in summer.
B.It is a land of ice that covers all Greenland.
C.It is a large area of ice that exists for centuries.
D.It is an ice world for animals to live on.
29.How does the melting of ice sheets affect animals?( )
A.It makes it easier to travel to other land. B.It increases the population of sea animals.
C.It makes their surroundings more comfortable. D.It causes hunger and illness among animals.
30.What can we infer from paragraph 4?( )
A.Ice sheet will soon disappear from the Earth. B.Sea levels are rising faster in recent years.
C.Greenland will be the first to lose all its ice. D.All natural disasters happen due to sea level rise.
31.What could be the best title for this passage?( )
A.Effect of Melting Ice Sheets B.Ice, Sea and Animals
C.Greenland and Antarctica D.Changes of Sea Levels

Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back and he’ll be speechless, which is an old joke in the US.This rested on a national stereotype: Italians are talkative and emotional, and all that arm-waggling supposedly goes to prove it.
However, Susan Goldin-Meadow, author of the book Thinking with Your Hands, has a rather different view.“Almost everyone gestures, not just Italians,” she laughs.“Conference interpreters gesture in their little rooms, though no one is looking at them.Even people born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. In the TV series, The Crown, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may reveal her real emotions, which could be dangerous and that they have to be tied together so she can learn to speak without gesturing.”
The gesture under discussion here is the so-called “co-speech gesture”.It is much more abstract than such symbolic gestures like a finger over the lips for “Silence!” or raising a finger to mean “Great!”.Like words, such symbolic gestures are fixed within cultures (but vary between them).Instead, co-speech gestures that accompany speech are another channel of information and emotion. For example, experimental subjects are asked to watch a film in which a cat runs, but they are told to lie and say it jumped. They may do so in words — while their hands will make a running movement. The co-speech gesture is not sign languages, which have clearly defined words and grammar and differ from place to place just as spoken ones do, either.
And the co-speech gestures have great potential for practical applications. For example, teachers are encouraged both to use gestures themselves and to observe those their students make. Some students who fail at a tricky mathematics problem may gesture in a way that indicates they are on the edge of getting it; they should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they are entirely in perplexity.
“Children with language delays caused by brain injuries at or around birth are likely to catch up verbally by the age of about 30 months, if they gesture as much as their peers. Those who gesture less are more likely to need early assistance,” Susan Goldin-Meadow adds.“Co-speech gesturing is not just about a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and is an aid to both.”
32.What does Susan Goldin-Meadow imply in paragraph 2?( )
A.Co-speech gestures are used by all of us.
B.Lady Diana is probably an emotional woman.
C.Italians are very talkative and gesture too much.
D.It is unnatural for the blind to gesture to each other.
33.What can we learn about sign languages?( )
A.They are as abstract as co-speech gestures.
B.They have distinctly structured words and grammar.
C.They are usually learned by human beings naturally.
D.They vary from culture to culture and person to person.
34.What does the underlined phrase “in perplexity” in paragraph 4 mean?( )
A.Confused. B.Relaxed.
C.Curious. D.Angry.
35.What does the author suggest teachers do in the passage?( )
A.Put enough trust in students. B.Teach as many tricky problems as possible.
C.Encourage students to tell the truth. D.Observe the co-speech gestures carefully.

Why dogs chase their tails? There are some answers to this question, which might surprise you. While tail chasing can be a harmless behavior, sometimes it can indicate a potential issue requiring a vet visit.Below are some common meanings behind your dog chasing its tail.
  36.( )
It might look like a strange activity to humans, but tail-chasing is a simple way for dogs to let loose and have a little fun.37.( ) Just keep in mind that a constantly bored or stressed dog might be feeling left out, so make sure its basic needs are being met, including exercise and socialization.
  Your dog is feeling stressed.
On the other hand, uncontrollable tail-chasing behavior could be a warning sign that your dog is anxious or stressed.38.( ) By the way, this fruitless and frustrating behavior is what led to the saying “like a dog chasing its tail”.
  Your dog wants your attention.
Tail-chasing is actually a go-to behavior for young dogs who are playing and learning about their bodies. And it’s hard not to smile when you see this happening, especially in puppies, because it’s funny and adorable. But this type of response can cause your pup to keep doing it.Try not to encourage this behavior.39.( )
Your dog may have intestinal parasites (肠道寄生虫).
This is another common reason why dogs chase their tails. It’s also a reason why dogs chew their tails, too.Infections are generally common in young dogs and can even be deadly in some puppies if left untreated.40.( ) If your dog is chasing their tail a lot, it’s best to rule out any medical issues first, so always get in touch with your vet who will be able to examine them and find the root of the problem.
A.Your dog wants exercise.
B.Your dog is expressing its emotion.
C.Your pup will form the habit of tail chasing.
D.Instead, provide a distraction by giving your dog a new toy or going on a walk.
E.Find out what’s at the root of your dog’s anxiety and then address that problem.
F.Common types of parasites include tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms and so on.
G.If a dog doesn’t have anything or anyone to play with, it might need to entertain itself.

Josie and I wanted a dog more than anything else on the earth. We wished for one every time we threw coins in a fountain or watched the evening star drop behind the trees. However, our mother believed that we were still too thoughtless to take on the task of raising a pet.She had witnessed our forgetfulness on household chores and getting into small conflicts. In her eyes, these were signs that we lacked the necessary responsibility.
One summer night, as we sat together on the roof, Josie saw something. She pointed down toward a dark shadow, “What’s that?”
For one astonishing second, Josie and I stared at each other. Then we rushed down onto the doorway. There in our yard stood a black dog.Josie made a little kissing noise and held out her hand. The dog came to us slowly, taking a few steps forward, then a step back, not sure whether to trust us.She was so skinny that I could just feel every bone, and her coat was messy.
“We’re going to have a dog!” My inside was full of excitement, just like before Christmas or our birthday.
“What’s a good name?” said Josie.
The perfect name wrote itself in my mind, “Shadow!”
The next day, we piled together all the pocket money we had to buy all kinds of dog food and hid it in various places because we were afraid Mom wouldn’t approve if she knew we were feeding a homeless dog.
That night, after our parents were asleep, we silently slipped downstairs to feed Shadow. We carefully poured the dog food into the bowl, trying to make as little noise as possible.Shadow, who had been waiting eagerly by our side, wagged her tail.As we placed the bowl on the floor, a creaking (吱吱的) sound filled the house.Suddenly, the kitchen light was switched on, illuminating the room and revealing our shocked faces.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;(2)请按如下格式作答。

Mom decided to give us a chance to prove we could be responsible owners.

How to Live a Green Life
Today, we are faced with severe environmental problems, which deserve our attention. As students, there are plenty of things we can do to live a green life.
Above all, it’s important to change our bad living habits. For example, don’t leave the tap running while brushing our teeth or leave the house with the lights still on.What’s more, we’d better cycle or use public transport to school instead of taking a car, thus reducing air pollution. Finally, get rid of plastic bags.Instead, bring your own bags or baskets.
All in all, it’s high time that we should take immediate action.Only when we live a green life can we make a difference to saving our planet.

Mom decided to give us a chance to prove we could be responsible owners.

参考范文:
It was our mother, standing there surprisingly. Her eyes widened as she saw the scene before her.For a moment, there was silence, only with the creaking sound still lingering in the air.Stammering, we tried to explain to her.We told her about how we found Shadow and our longing for a dog, hoping that somehow our mother would understand it.After a long pause, she finally spoke, “I can see how much you both care for Shadow, and maybe it’s time for us to give her a home.”
Mom decided to give us a chance to prove we could be responsible owners. From that day on, we poured our hearts into taking care of Shadow. We woke up early every morning to take her for walks and diligently cleaned up after her.Gradually, Shadow transformed before our eyes. Her coat became shiny and healthy, and she gained weight. She followed us everywhere like a second Shadow. Not only had we achieved our dream of having a dog, we had also earned our mother’s trust and respect.
