Gu, a young man from Chongqing, China, has devoted himself to revitalizing the traditional “filigree inlay art”. Over the past seven years, he has given this 1,000-year-old craft a modern twist (变化,新意), helping it regain its former glory and attract young admirers. “People of my generation should pass down the craft so that it won’t become something our children can only see in museums,” he said.
Filigree inlay was mainly used in jewelry making in ancient China. Filigree involves using gold or silver threads to create delicate designs, while the inlay work decorates metal pieces with carved patterns and embedded jade or gemstones.
Gu majored in history in college. After graduation, he studied cultural relic restoration at the Palace Museum for half a year, where he was deeply impressed by a phoenix crown (凤冠) decorated with filigree inlay. Then he decided to devote himself to learning the art and passing it down to younger generations, believing that only younger generations can inject vitality to it.
However, mastering the craft proved far from easy. To make a piece, Gu must stretch metal threads 5 millimeters in diameter into thin filaments — some as fine as 0.16 millimeters. Yet he never gave up, often spending hours stretching, twisting and weaving threads thinner than a human hair into complex patterns.
After becoming skilled in the craft, Gu focused on blending traditional techniques with modern life. He designed fashionable jewelry, like hairpins, earrings and brooches to appeal to young people. Meanwhile, he began to explore new ways of promotion. Luckily, the emergence of new media contributes greatly to carrying forward this traditional technique. Because of these efforts, his works have gained wide attention both in China and abroad. While foreigners admire their unique Chinese charm, overseas Chinese see them as a reminder of home. Thanks to Gu’s creativity and persistence, the ancient art of filigree inlay is surviving, but thriving (繁荣) in the contemporary world.
4. What do Gu’s words suggest in the first paragraph
A. He feels the urge to preserve the craft. B. He sees the craft as mainly for the young.
C. He thinks the craft is best displayed in museums. D. He hopes more children will visit craft museums.
5. What primarily motivated Gu to pursue filigree inlay art
A. His academic background in history. B. His intention to modernize the craft.
C. The lack of young artisans in this field. D. A specific artifact he encountered.
6. What do the figures emphasize about filigree making in paragraph 4
A. The high process cost. B. The rapid production pace.
C. The demanding precision. D. The hard-to-obtained raw materials.
7 What is the most significant outcome of Gu’s work
A. Enabling mass art production. B. Integrating tradition and modernity.
C. Turning the craft into a research frontier. D. Expanding exhibition space in museums.

In February 2018, train passengers travelling between Almere and Amsterdam were horrified to see thousands of dead animals, lying scattered (散落) across the Oostvaardersplassen. The reserve, once celebrated as a pioneering rewilding project for the principle of no human intervention, immediately set off a heated debate: Was it animal cruelty or just nature taking its course
The project originated in 1968 after a Dutch inland sea was drained (抽干) to build two new cities Lelystad and Almere. Its wetland area, once a paradise (天堂) for marsh birds, soon became a fertile breeding ground for different birds. Inspired by Dutch biologist Frans Vera, it was designated as a nature reserve in 1983, where wildlife thrived without human involvement. Vera’s approach worked: The grazer (食草动物) and bird populations boomed quickly. However, a crisis was on the horizon.
The reserve, fenced within an area of 30 square miles, was isolated from wildlife corridors and surrounding landscapes, blocking the animals from accessing external shelter and food sources. With no predators controlling the grazer population, their numbers grew unchecked, consuming almost all the vegetation and leaving nothing but the bare land. Food shortage worsened in winter, leading to the extinction of 22 bird species. When the park managers attempted to shoot the outnumbered grazers like wild horses to balance the ecosystem, they faced strong objection from the public, considering it as cold and immoral. The wildlife in the reserve thus fell victim to severe undernutrition in the hard winter.
The ecological disaster sparked widespread debates about the nature restoration movement sweeping across the world in recent decades, promoting a shift in the reserve management. People now actively intervene; planting trees, feeding the animals if needed, introducing predators like wolves and capping the grazers to keep their numbers in check.
While some still advocate non-intervention, the controversy has evolved into a broader reflection on whether to prioritize raw natural processes or to balance ecological health with ethical and social expectations. Anyway, more people now think about nature as a dynamic system rather than as a stable landscape — a lasting legacy of the ecological trial.
8. Why was the drained wetland turned into a nature reserve in 1983
A. Two new cities needed green protection.
B. The wetland became an ideal habitat for wildlife.
C. Grazers and birds coexisted with local residents.
D. The government wanted to stop urban expansion.
9. Which is a major cause of the 2018 ecological crisis in the Oostvaardersplassen
A. The fencing-off of the reserve. B. The outnumbered predators.
C. Unnecessary human intervention. D. Social acceptance of killing animals.
10. What does the underlined word “capping” mean in paragraph 4
A. Putting a cover over. B. Casting shadow on.
C. Relocating to a new place. D. Setting an upper limit on.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. Paradise Rewilded, Then Winter-Reversed
B. Reserve Unfenced: No-Intervention Collapse
C. Dutch Drained Sea, Grazer & Bird Graveyard Made
D. Ethics vs. Wilderness: Oostvaardersplassen on Trial
D
You have reasons for your beliefs. You can reflect on those reasons: “Why do I think there’s a serial killer upstairs It’s because the floor creaked (嘎吱).” You can also adjust your beliefs with more evidence piled up: “Having combed the room, I must conclude that it’s just an old, creaky house.”
This skill is known as belief revision, a process of reflecting and adjusting our own thoughts and a long-standing mark of human reasoning that distinguishes us from other animals. But a new study in the journal Science shows that animals like chimps (黑猩猩) also reason in surprisingly complicated ways. Experiments revolved around food hidden in one of several boxes: The chimps would pick the box they thought was most promising based on an initial clue. Then they’d get another clue that conflicted with the first. Given the chance to rethink, they almost always chose the box predicted by a sound-reasoning rule.
Most impressively, the animals even accounted for clues that weakened earlier evidence. When hearing something bouncing around inside box, they would assume that it was an apple, but then the experimenter would pull out a stone. Realizing they had been misled, the chimps would immediately opt for box 2, even though it appeared negligible a moment before. “This was the cherry on top,” says study co-author Jan Engelmann, a psychologist at the University of California. “None of us thought they could do it as it’s just so complex and it’s hard to explain their behavior without appealing to the notion of reflection.”
The study reminds us that reflective skills evolved from those abilities already present in the common ancestor we share with chimpanzees. More than 150 years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that our extraordinary mental powers would turn out to be found throughout the animal kingdom. If chimpanzees are truly capable of reflection, the gap between us and our primate cousins narrows a bit further, as they consider the world in a way we think of as being rational (理性的).
12. Why does the author begin with the “killer upstairs” tale
A. To expose fear-fed fantasy. B. To caution risks in old houses.
C. To show belief-revision skill. D. To satisfy curiosity about mysteries.
13 What can chimps do according to paragraph 2
A. Weigh conflicting clues. B. Memorize hidden boxes.
C. Behave faster than humans. D. Predict the researchers’ next move.
14. What does Engelmann call the “cherry on top”
A. Chimps drop bad clues after the stone reveal. B. Chimps learn to use complex tools for reward.
C. Chimps stick to first pick as the apple appears. D. Chimps chase the loudest noise without thinking.
15. What does the author intend to imply by bringing up Darwin
A. The contribution of the biologist. B. The extension of rational thinking.
C. The recognition of human capacities. D. The reflection on the theory of evolution.

How to Build a Healthy Morning Routine
A good morning routine can set the tone for your entire day, boosting productivity, improving mood, and supporting long-term health. However, building a sustainable routine isn’t about copying others. ____16____ Here’s how to create one that sticks.
Kick off your day with a calm activity. Instead of jumping out of bed and rushing, start with a gentle transition. Try stretching for 5 minutes, sipping a glass of warm water, or simply taking a few deep breaths. This calms your nervous system and helps you wake up gradually rather than feeling stressed. ____17____ It’s a small but powerful way to avoid the morning chaos and set a peaceful tone.
Many people skip breakfast due to lack of time, but a nutritious meal fuels your body and brain. Eat a balanced breakfast to kickstart your metabolism (新陈代谢). Opt for whole grains, protein, and fruits — like oatmeal with nuts or a yogurt parfait. ____18____ A balanced breakfast not only boosts your metabolism but also keeps you focused until lunchtime.
Morning exercise doesn’t have to be intense. A 10-minute walk, a quick yoga flow, or a few sets of bodyweight exercises can boost endorphins (内啡肽) and increase alertness. ____19____ Even small amounts of activity help improve focus and keep tiredness at bay.
Checking your phone first can flood your mind with notifications, emails, and social media updates, leaving you feeling overwhelmed. Instead, use the first hour to focus on yourself — read a book, journal, or plan your day. This intentional time helps you stay in control of your schedule. ____20____
A healthy morning routine will definitely ensure that you can start your day feeling energized, and focused, ready to take on whatever comes next!
A. Avoid screen time after waking up.
B. It is about finding what works for you.
C. Taking light exercise can boost daily energy.
D. Say no to sugary snacks that cause energy crashes later.
E. Planning your morning tasks the night before can save precious time.

The sun was high in a cloudless sky. Birds sang. Flowers bloomed — a perfect day to be out playing with friends. The problem was, we’d only been in town two months so I hadn’t made any friends.
Now, here I was, stuck with my baby brother John and Mary, the new sitter. Boring! Just then, the phone rang. I hopped up to answer it.
“Hi, Lou. It’s Alicia.”
“I’m calling to invite you over to my house this afternoon. We can read in my study, would you come ”
Heart racing, I couldn’t wait to give a definite “Yes!”, picturing the big ocean of books Alicia once mentioned. I held my breath.
“Alicia, I can come. What time ”
“One o’clock ”
“Great. See ya then.”
I chose my outfit very carefully: My best shorts, clean T-shirt and brand-new shoes. I left early, lost in daydreams of becoming Alicia’s friend. We were a lot alike. We both loved to read. Our hands were the first up to answer questions. I just knew we could be best friends — if we had a chance.
Several blocks later, across the highway, I saw the big shining windows. Now all I had to do was cross four lanes of traffic. I surely hoped I wasn’t late!
Her house was surrounded by big old trees. The cool shade felt wonderful. I walked up to the front door and rang the bell. No one answered. No one came to the door! I couldn’t believe it. Had I heard Alicia wrong Didn’t she say today Why would she invite me and leave I sat on the front steps and waited and waited. It got later and later. No Alicia! Nobody came!
I sat there with my head in my hands, growing more disappointed and confused by the minute. I was kind of ashamed. I’d been so hungry for a friend that I’d fallen for her mean trick.

Fire Safety Comes to Campus
Last week, our school successfully organized the “Fire Safety on Campus” campaign, featuring an informative lecture and a practical fire drill. We students learned how to prevent fires and respond in emergencies, and then practiced evacuating quickly and safely.
The activity was truly meaningful. Not only did it raise our awareness of fire hazards, but it also taught us life-saving skills. I now feel more confident about handling unexpected situations. Such knowledge and practice are invaluable for our daily safety.
Let’s always keep safety in mind!

【47 题答案】
【答案】 When I got home, Mary told me that Alicia's parents had just called. Their voices were filled with anxiety — Alicia had had a sudden fall at home and was rushed to the hospital. That was why no one was there. All my earlier frustration vanished, replaced by worry. I knew then that real friendship meant being there not just for the fun times.
The next day I went on the road to hospital. With a book from my own shelf in hand, I found Alicia resting in her room. Her smile was weak but genuine. “I’m really sorry about yesterday,” she said. “It’s okay,” I replied, placing the book beside her. “I thought we could start our reading club right here.” We talked and read together that afternoon, and in that quiet hospital room, I didn’t just find a fellow book lover — I found a true friend. Sometimes, the best connections are born not from perfect plans, but from kindness shown in unexpected moments.
