1] Old Peter sat in his empty restaurant.
→Feeling frustrated, old Peter sat in his empty restaurant.(添加伴随状语)
2] The man looked Lily up and down.
→The man looked Lily up and down in disbelief.(添加方式状语)
3] The woman quickened her pace towards the red building.
→Eager to see her beloved daughter, the woman quickened her pace towards the red building.(添加伴随状语)
4] After finishing his work, the man tiptoed to the bed.
→After finishing his work, the man tiptoed to the bed so as not to wake his baby.(添加目的状语)
1.The boy later went up to his teacher and said sorry.
→_________________________________________________________________________________________________
2.Suddenly,the woman stood up and entered the house.
→_________________________________________________________
Deeply aware of his mistakes, the boy later went up to his teacher and said sorry.
Suddenly, the woman stood up and entered the house in tears.
3.The boy turned to the strange man.
→_________________________________________________________
4.He stood leaning against the wall.
→_________________________________________________________
5.Jack shook my hands tightly.
→______________________________________________________
The boy turned to the strange man, with his eyes full of horror.
He stood leaning against the wall, unable to speak.
Jack shook my hands tightly as if we were long lost friends.
Lisa walked toward her father.
→Lisa saw her father in the distance,so she jumped up and made her way through the crowd toward him.
After I finished painting walls in the bedroom upstairs,I went to clean the windows.
→After I finished painting walls in the bedroom upstairs,I brought up some water and old towels, and then stepped on a bench to clean the windows.
Jason got on a taxi.
→Jason stopped a taxi, jumped in with his suitcase and told the driver,“Go to the police station please.”
1.Jenny caught the butterfly.
→______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2.The young mother gathered her son into her arms.
→____________________________________________________________________________________________
Jenny crept along the path, bent over swiftly and cupped her hands around the butterfly gently.
The young mother dashed forward, knelt down and gathered her son into her arms.
3.The boys jumped into the water.
→_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
4.The singer began to sing.
→______________________________________________________________________________________
5.Tony rushed out of the living room.
→_______________________________________________________________________________________________
The boys rushed excitedly to the lake, took off their clothes and jumped into the water.
The singer glanced at the audience, took a deep breath and began to sing.
Hearing his friend calling him,Tony jumped up and rushed out of the living room.
[典例1] I was very terrified at the sight of the fierce wolf.(静态)
→At the sight of the fierce wolf,I froze with terror.(动态)
[典例2] She was nervous while waiting.(静态)
→While waiting, she nervously paced up and down outside the room.(动态)
[分析] 静态描写用形容词“nervous”来表达她等待时的心情,改成动态描写“paced up and down outside the room”以后。
[典例3] When the host announced that she won the prize, she was excited.(静态)
→When the host announced that she won the prize, her eyes twinkled with excitement.(动态)
[典例4] Upon hearing the bad news, she felt very sad.(静态)
→Upon hearing the bad news, her heart ached, tears streaming down her cheeks.(动态)
1.Jenny was nervous when she walked to the platform.
→_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2.She felt shy when she realized she was being watched.
→______________________________________________________________________________________________
Jenny walked slowly to the platform, with her legs trembling and her heart bumping nearly out of her chest.
Color rushed/flooded/rose to her cheeks when she realized she was being watched.
3.The old man was happy when his grandson smiled at him.
→_____________________________________________________________________________________________
4.Seeing the meat in the master's hand, the little dog was extremely excited.
→________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The old man wore a shining smile on his face when his grandson smiled at him.
Seeing the meat in the master's hand, the little dog wagged its tail excitedly and watched with hopeful eyes.
5.He was disappointed when he heard the news that he failed to win a prize.
→_________________________________________________________
His heart sank when he heard the news that he failed to win a prize.
1] The lovely children are smiling.
→The lovely children's smiling faces are like beautiful flowers in spring.(比喻)
2] Immediately, the forest became very dark.
→Immediately,absolute darkness ruled the forest.(拟人)
3] There's enough food in the cupboard.
→There's enough food in the cupboard to feed an entire army!(夸张)
1.My heart was broken.(夸张)
→__________________________________________________
2.Jenny walked into the door happily.(比喻)

The bus went as slowly as a snail.
4.The classroom was very quiet.(夸张)
→__________________________________________________________________________________
5.In the night,we watched the stars in the sky.(拟人)
→___________________________________________________________________________________________
The classroom was so quiet that a needle could be heard when dropped.
In the night,we watched the stars blinking their eyes naughtily in the sky.

There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn't counted on:My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire.Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece's small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine.Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room.Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment.I didn't want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn't happy with driving home with a wet dog.Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn't heard anything from my brother.I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise—a shock, actually:“Not a chance.”Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice.Well, he'll get over it, I reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience (良心) kept bothering me.I tried to put myself in my brother's shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier.Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.

I realized it was me who was at fault. The memory of my brother's defeated expression when he left with Toby struck me hard.Reflecting on his loneliness and Toby's vital role in his life,a wave of guilt overwhelmed me.I'd been so focused on protecting the kids that I'd overlooked my brother's emotional needs, leading to a rift between us.I knew I needed to let go of my pride and bridge the gap.I shared my regret and determination to apologize with my wife, who offered to bake his favorite biscuits as a peace offering.
With the biscuits my wife had made,I arrived at my brother's door.Would he close the door in my face?My heart in my throat,I knocked. My brother opened the door, his eyes widening in surprise.“I owe you an apology,”I said, holding out the tin.“I should have seen how much Toby means to you.”He hesitated, and then gave me a hug.Toby jumped around us,its tail wagging. The warmth between us returned—stronger than ever. The biscuits became a symbol of reconciliation—proof that warmth and putting yourself in others' shoes could mend what misunderstanding had broken.

It was cool and bright and just right for running.I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race through some hills.Birds were singing in the trees. The soft wind was brushing my cheeks.I felt rested and springy.Despite the hills,I thought it was going to be a fine run.
Ahead was Blake,a student from Burke High School. He was running easily, too, moving along efficiently. The pace felt comfortable,so I decided to stay where he was;why bother concentrating on pace when Blake was such a nice pacesetter for me?I would overtake Blake later on when he used up energy.
So I ran closely behind him.The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a mile, and then turned south again. The race was getting tougher. With three miles to go,it was beginning to be real hard work.My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.
Blake overtook the boy in front of him.Apparently he knew the boy,for they exchanged a few words.Their brief communication worried me.Runners don't chat during a race unless they feel really good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.
Still,I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired,so I didn't give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill,a mile from the finish line,so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill,my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up,Blake was moving away, first five yards, then ten, then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.

Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully. My chance came!Excitement took over.I refocused my attention on the course and speeded my pace.My legs didn't feel like stone anymore;instead, the long lost springiness came back to me.Five yards, ten yards and more.I was about to overtake Blake when a second thought came to me.There was Blake, sitting on the ground, sweat rolling down his face because of tiredness and pain. With a hint of desperation in his eyes,he squeezed a sad smile.I stopped.Putting one of his arms around my shoulder,I supported him slowly to the finish line.
A reporter took a picture of this moving scene and posted it online. It instantly received thousands of shares and likes.People expressed their respect and admiration for my courage and selflessness to give up what could be an easy victory. One viewer even commented.“Nowadays people tend to focus too much on ‘win or loss’.It's a great comfort to see that true sportsmanship still exists.”We were impressed with the idea that friendship comes first at an early age.I was quite proud to have lived up to that idea and to have served as a reminder.

It was an early winter morning.Joan was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already nine o'clock.Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe.Although Joan was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up.After all,she didn't expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log,to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver,on the other end came the warmhearted greetings,“Good morning,my dear!”Recognizing the voice from her father,Joan was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.

Joan's father was a seaman, who rarely came back.Working on the sea was really hard.Born in a not rich family,Joan and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students throughout the academic career and actively involved in school activities. They became the pride of the school and the envy of the students.
“Good morning,Dad.What's up?”Joan said in an easy tone.“I have been very nice recently,my baby.Today is your mother's birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in an hour and a half.Do remember to take the cake.”
Hearing her father's words,Joan felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum's birthday! She took a glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the oily floor that hadn't been mopped (用拖把擦) for a few days—There was two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise for Mum.
Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement.“Well,Dad,now I'm going to wake Mike up.We will give Mum a surprise!”
Joan hung up the phone with Dad,and hurriedly went to Mike's room to share her Big Cleaning plan with him. After listening to Joan,Mike readily accepted her idea.

With the cake placed on the table,Mum came in.“Happy birthday,Mum!”they greeted in chorus.Confused and surprised(形容词短语作状语),Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened(宾语从句),a warm current rose in her heart.Staring at the clean floor and the washed clothes(现在分词短语作状语),she could hardly contain her excitement and hugged them tightly.Mum said emotionally,“It is the best birthday gift I have ever had(省略了关系词的定语从句)!”Just then,Joan took out her smartphone and took a happy video named“Mum's Birthday”(过去分词短语作后置定语)and sent it to their dad.

As the old saying goes,we make a living by what we get,but make a life by what we give.
I truly believe that a job is definitely not a job if you love what you are doing. Many years ago,I worked in an employment and insurance office, which helps people find jobs, apply for employment and insurance, and return to school for training. What could be more rewarding than helping someone find a job or change their career
I have always said that people are at their worst when they are unemployed or sick.I must admit that some days are challenging. But I have one amazing story that I would like to share.
One day,a lady came to the office with a dream to become a registered nurse.According to my client, her family did not approve. She was a mother with young children, and her husband had returned to school for training. It was not economically practical for her to return to school.
It was clear that this lady had a passion for the nursing profession,so I encouraged her to realize her dream.I equipped her with the information necessary to apply to nursing school, and she left the office. She went on her way,and I never knew whether she followed her dream or not.
Many years later,I was diagnosed(诊断)with cancer of the stomach and was admitted to the hospital for an operation.I must admit I was scared. My mother had died of cancer at age forty.I had a husband and two beautiful children.I was only forty-eight years old.The surgery was successful. It was, however, very painful.Days flew smoothly as I recovered from the pain.

Madison stared through the window and watched a bird fly across the sky.She thought,“How I wish I were a bird, with total freedom and no math class to sit in.” She sighed and wondered how warm it was outside. She thought of her horse,Star. She planned to brush him down before riding him after school.Somewhere, someone was saying her name, but it seemed so far away. The bird continued to float through the air.
“Madison,Madison!Hand in the math homework!”
Madison jumped. She turned back toward the class to find everyone laughing. It turned out that she was daydreaming again.
Madison searched her schoolbag, but found no homework.Mr.Smith was about to criticize her when Doctor Landon came in.He was a veterinarian(兽医) and would deliver a speech as part of the Career Exploration Program.
Madison looked at the clock. One more hour and it would be time to go home.
She tried to focus as Doctor Landon talked about how important math and science were and how he struggled with them when he was a kid.She glanced out the window and tried to remember where she left her riding boots.Doctor Landon was still talking but she lost track of what he was saying. Then a word caught her attention.Horse.Was he talking about horses? She paid attention as he spoke.
“I love being a veterinarian because I love animals, especially horses and I enjoy freedom.Specializing in horses gave me the chance to be outside all day, moving from place to place in our community.Do any of you have horses?”

I was invited to a cookout on an old friend's farm in western Washington.I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years.A noise at a window caught my attention,so I entered it.It was a hummingbird(蜂鸟),desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs(蛛网)and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand,I looked around to see how she had gotten in.The broken window glass was the likely answer.I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away;she sat looking at me with her bright eyes.I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings.Still, she made no attempt to fly.Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired?Or too thirsty
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move.I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.Hovering(悬停),she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout,I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing,my friends walked me to my car.I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me.She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said,“She must have come to say good-bye.”

A few weeks later,I went to the farm again.I still remembered my friends' promise so I went past the abandoned milking house to see if they had fixed the broken window(宾语从句).To my satisfaction,no other tiny creatures would meet this trouble any more.As I approached the farm(时间状语从句),I was greeted by a spicy smell of the barbecue, urging me to walk faster(现在分词短语作状语).We were totally immersed in the peaceful atmosphere, enjoying the delicate cuisines, talking about our interesting experiences and singing songs till the sun set(现在分词短语作伴随状语).The evening glow spreading across the farm(独立主格结构),it was time for us to say goodbye so we went to the parking lot together.
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. With a squeaking call, she dived towards me and hovered before my face, looking at me with her bright eyes(现在分词短语作伴随状语).Then she stopped on my left shoulder.I patted her on the back which was covered by colorful feathers(定语从句).And I took out my water bottle, trying to give her some water(现在分词短语作状语).Content and joyful(形容词短语作伴随状语),she flew about 2 meters above the ground, turning her head from side to side as if expressing her gratitude for saving her life to me again(现在分词短语作状语).At that moment, happiness and the feeling of being moved mingled, welling up into my heart, tears rolling down my cheeks(独立主格结构).

It was a bright May afternoon along the Maryland coast, and Jonathan Bauer,51,an expert doctor at a hospital, and his 13-year-old daughter,Ava,were taking full advantage of his professional knowledge to help others. They were driving with the windows down as they headed home on the 1.4-mile-long,two-lane Route 90 bridge, which stretches across the shallow waters of Assawoman Bay.Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the high sound of tires.
Not far ahead of them,a black pickup was sliding from one lane to the other. To the Bauers' horror,it ran into a concrete barrier, turned over the SUV directly ahead of them, and came to rest hanging over the railing (栏杆) of the bridge.Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path.
Bauer stopped the car.“Ava,are you OK?”he asked. She was shaken, but otherwise unhurt.
And then a scream came from the pickup. The driver's door was thrown open and a man climbed out.He dropped to the ground and then ran to the railing.Bauer ran up beside him.The man pointed down, saying something in Spanish. In the water was a car seat.Fastened to it,a girl about two years old, looked terrified, floating on her back, kicking, splashing and streaming.
Matters quickly went from bad to frightening when the girl rolled over onto her stomach.Bauer waited for the pickup driver to do something, but he didn't move.Maybe he was in shock.
“Ava!”Bauer shouted, bending to remove his shoes.“Stay by the car!”

He climbed onto the railing and jumped into the water without hesitation.Seeing the little girl floating on her chest ten feet away(现在分词短语作状语),Bauer swam to her with all his strength and lifted her out of the water swiftly. However, the toddler's critical condition had Bauer's heart in his mouth, heartbeat racing wildly. In no time he collected himself as a professional to offer timely assistance—standing straight, laying her against his shoulder and hitting hard at her back with the flat of his hand. With another hit on the back which was followed by a breath,Bauer sensed the beautiful feeling of little fingers holding him around the neck. Her eyes were opened now, focused on him.A mixture of relief and concern flooded over him as Bauer pulled her close as if to shelter her from any dangers. In the meantime,Ava,stunned by what she witnessed (宾语从句),called an ambulance.
A moment later the pickup driver pulled Bauer and the little girl ashore and the ambulance arrived.Minutes later, much to everyone's relief, the girl was rushed to hospital in a helicopter, and Bauer breathed a sigh of relaxation ultimately and hugged his own daughter on the bridge, with his eyes glittering in the sun(with复合结构).Soon they were informed gratefully the toddler suffered a broken shoulder but was otherwise uninjured.Hearing the inspiring news(现在分词短语作时间状语),Ava was very thrilled and felt proud of her father, without whose immediate leap that little girl would not have lived a whole life.Inspired by her father's actions(过去分词短语作状语),she made up her mind to save lives when she grew up.
