My best friend and I have been close for eight years. When I was an awkward primary school student, she was the popular girl who was willing to make friends with me.Since then,a close friendship has grown between us and she's been almost like a sister to me.Whether we're walking to school, doing homework or just hanging out① at the weekend,we're hardly out of each other's sight②. [1] But last Saturday, she broke my heart, and I'm still picking up the pieces③.
Our original plan was to see a film at the cinema that afternoon. But in the morning,my friend posted a message on social media saying she had a cold. When I called her,she said she might not be able to make it④ to the cinema.“Don't worry,” I said. “Get some rest.We can wait till you get better.”
Today, however,I received a horrible surprise.A classmate told me she had seen my friend chatting with another girl in a café on Saturday afternoon. How stupid I was!My friend's “illness” was a complete lie!Instead of recovering at home, she was out having fun with⑤ someone else.
I was so angry that I avoided her during school all day, and I still don't feel like responding to⑥ any of her online messages.[2] The stress of this situation is killing me,and I'm at a loss⑦ what to do next.

Dear Ben,
1 There is an old American saying,“Loose lips sink ships .”This means that if you speak too much about something, especially to people who you don't know so well,it'll cause all kinds of trouble.
2 The situation here is so much worse because the “loose lips” were your best friend's.Treated this way, you're sure to feel hurt—we should always be able to trust those closest to us,and it hurts even more when we find we can't.[6]
1
closest to us为形容词短语作后置定语,修饰those。and后的分句中包含when引导的时间状语从句,该从句中we can't是省略that的宾语从句,作find的宾语,can't后省略的内容为trust those closest to us。
[语用]本句中的第一个hurt为形容词,表示“very upset or unhappy because someone has said or done something unkind, dishonest,or unfair”;第二个hurt在本句中为不及物动词,表示“to make someone feel very upset, unhappy, sad etc.”。此外,hurt还可作及物动词,表示“to injure yourself or someone else”。
loose/lu s/adj.
lip/lIp/n.(嘴)唇
sink/sI k/v.(sank/sunk,sunk)使(船)沉没
3 But I have to say that it's partly your fault ,isn't it?You admit that you were “letting off steam”.It is understandable in that situation, but we should always think before we speak .
4 Here's what you need to do.[7]First,apologise to your teammate. If you ever want to win any more basketball games (and I'm sure you do!),you need to work together, and that means communicating with each other clearly and resolving conflicts[8].So have a chat with your teammate.Tell him directly and honestly that you were talking without thinking.
[7]本句使用了全部倒装结构,副词Here提前,主语是what引导的主语从句what you need to do。
understandable adj.
think before we speak
resolve/rI'z lv/v.
5 Then, talk to your friend.Friendship should be one of the greatest things in the world, but sometimes it can be difficult.Again, your strategy is clear communication.Tell your friend you're angry with him for repeating what you said and making the situation worse, but that you want to move on .[9]Approached in this way[10],your friendship will soon be repaired.
[9]本句中but连接两个并列的宾语从句,均作Tell的宾语;第一个宾语从句为you're angry...worse,其前省略了引导词that,其中包含一个what引导的宾语从句what you said,作repeating的宾语;第二个宾语从句为that you want to move on。
If your friendship is approached in this way。
1
strategy/'str t d i/n.
move on (to sth)开始做(别的事);换话题
approach vt.着手处理(=deal with,handle)
6 Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, think about your own behaviour.Don't say too much when you're angry!Filled with anger, you tend to say whatever comes to your mind .This gives people the wrong signal .Take a deep breath ,calm down, and always remember:think first, speak later. If you feel one of your teammates isn't pulling their weight ,then raise your concerns in a professional way with your team coach.
7 If you think about other people's feelings as well as your own, you'll soon find everything works out .
8 Good luck!

A
I suffered from mental illness and depression when I was younger, which totally affected my teenage years. But after a long struggle,I found a hobby that changed my life.
My depression really kicked in after my parents moved to the UK when I was about 11 years old.Having to adjust to life in a foreign country was very difficult. The friends I knew were gone, and the changes in my environment led to my depression.I had problems in many parts of my life, which made it impossible for me to carry on.
At that time,I didn't understand that depression was an illness.I remember a particular day when I couldn't find enough strength to get myself home from playing in the park—it felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders.
Other times,I even thought about killing myself—I just felt so trapped.I never really reached out for help,as I felt that there wasn't anyone who could help me out.
What turned my life around, however, was my discovery of street dancing.I was introduced to it by a friend, and I started taking classes at a studio in London. After a few weeks,I began to go out and meet a lot of other dancers to practice and train with them on a regular basis. It gave me a purpose, and eventually the happiness I gained from it helped me manage my depression. The dancing helped me get my life back, focus on my studies, and get through university.
My advice to anyone who might be going through something like I is to reach out for help. The thing about life is that it changes, and you never know what might come your way.If someone had said to me during those dark moments that I would go on to achieve the things I have,I wouldn't have ever believed it.
Just take each day as it comes, and remember that there's always someone,or something, out there to help you.

Have you ever argued with a friend, and said or done something you regretted?Sometimes it can be hard to put things right, especially when feelings have been hurt.Knowing how to apologise can help you become friends again and understand why you fell out in the first place.
We argue for all kinds of reasons. You might think your football team is fantastic but your friend disagrees; or maybe your sister is really annoying.Sometimes, especially if you're angry, things can spiral out of control and you'll say or do something you regret.Arguing and disagreeing with others occasionally is normal—we all do it—but it's important to resolve your differences afterwards so bad feelings don't get worse. This is where an apology can help.
We all make mistakes, and apologising is a way of admitting we've got something wrong and will try not to do it again.Dr.Jennifer Thomas,a psychologist and author, believes an apology needs to show the other person that we're genuinely(真诚地) sorry, that we accept responsibility for our actions and that we want their forgiveness.
Sometimes another person may pressure you into taking the blame when it's not your fault. If you feel that this is happening, try talking about why you argued in the first place and explain how it made you feel.If you still can't agree, you could ask a parent or teacher to help you resolve the problem.
Just saying “I'm sorry” might not always be enough,so try to ask the other person how they felt while you were arguing.Explain your side too,and make it clear that you'll try not to repeat the same mistake again.A genuine apology isn't a magic wand(魔杖); it may take someone some time to understand and forgive.Even after you've said sorry, you could still feel bad but you can feel good about trying to fix things and promising to do better next time.
