试卷第 4 页,共 14 页
The Secret Garden was one of my first books in primary school. On the very first page of
my copy, there is a message from my aunt, who wished me a happy birthday. I believe it to be a
standout children’s book, not only for the tenderness (细腻) that emerges from every page but for
the teachings that it leaves us.
Mary Lennox, our protagonist (主角), is a 10-year-old girl who lives in India. After losing
her parents, Mary is sent to live with her uncle in England. There, she meets her cousin Colin and
the farm boy Dickon. She also discovers a secret garden. Mary loves the feeling that no one knows
where she is when the walls shut her in.
The descriptions of the garden were something I liked very much the first time I read the
story because they made it sound truly magical. I also fondly remember the first time Dickon
appeared, bringing Mary the seeds, and how they started working together to make the garden
beautiful again. The regeneration of the garden mirrors the one taking place inside the young
cousins.
Mary and Colin are raised away from their parents, and they have received all the things
they could want, except for the most important ones: love and attention.
Of course, the situation of the characters in the book might be a little peculiar (不寻常的),
but there are plenty of different ways in which a kid can be ignored.
In today’s modern life, where both parents usually work and come home tired, it is common
to see children not getting the attention they need, or spending more time on technological
devices, to keep them entertained and quiet for longer periods.
This fact, far from making children more independent, makes it very important to spend
more time with them, talk to them, and help them make sense of all the information they are
constantly receiving. The book invites us to reflect on this topic. It also gives us some hope: It is
never too late to make things right.
4.How did The Secret Garden first come to the author
A.As a blessing gift B.As a school award
C.As a random purchase D.As a pretty souvenir
5.What is the state of the garden when Mary discovers it
A.It is calm and colorful. B.It is small and ignored.
C.It is enclosed and deserted. D.It is beautiful and mysterious.
试卷第 5 页,共 14 页
6.How are Mary and Colin similar to children nowadays
A.They can get everything they want.
B.They are given too much freedom.
C.They have limited social interactions.
D.They lack emotional support from their parents.
7.What message does the author intend to convey by introducing The Secret Garden
A.Children should learn to be independent.
B.Children should be taught to love nature.
C.Parents should encourage their children to read.
D.Parents should be involved in their children’s growth.

We’ve lost direction and our brains are shrinking(缩小)—at least, our hippocampi are.
These brain parts drive our spatial(空间的) awareness and orientation(方向). London taxi drivers,
known for taking The Knowledge, a test that involves memorizing the central streets of the
capital, have full-sized hippocampi. But in 2011, the drivers’ hippocampi were discovered to have
shrunk significantly after retirement.
The development of the hippocampus can also be stunted(妨碍发展) in childhood. Children
living in urban environments rarely see the sun rise or set and cannot tell the difference between
east and west. When I went into my local school to teach kids about direction, I found they
struggled to distinguish north from south and east from west—though they could do so if allowed
to use their phones.
Since 2005, when Google Maps was launched claiming it would help users get from A to B
and then, three years later, when the iPhone 3G was released, featuring “live” location, the online
tech giants stated that today’s digital native kids would be the first generation who would not
know what it meant to get lost.
But is that a good thing Their perspectives and orientation, like their hippocampi, are
shrinking with the help of online providers. In four generations, children have gone from
wandering up to six miles from home to an average of just 300 yards. The lack of outdoor
activities has greatly affected children’s mental and physical health. It also encourages a fear of
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
nature, leading to avoidance of the natural world and potentially resulting in indifference towards
environmental conservation.
We are becoming, quite literally, disoriented in a digital world where we have given up on
tools like paper maps and magnetic compasses.
However, it doesn’t have to be this way. After all, maps and compasses are cognitive tools,
like the Internet, and we’ve been using them for thousands of years. But for our sense of
well-being, and that of the world that sustains us, we can take steps not just to appreciate nature
positively, but also to understand who we are by understanding where we are.
8.Why did London taxi drivers’ hippocampi shrink significantly after retirement
A.The drivers grew much older. B.The need to memorize was reduced.
C.The outdoor activities decreased. D.The drivers were addicted to phones.
9.What did the author find about the kids in the local school
A.They had well-developed hippocampi.
B.They were skilled at using paper maps.
C.They were struggling with their studies.
D.They had difficulty navigating without phones.
10.What is the main purpose of paragraph 4
A.To encourage children to spend more time on outdoor activities.
B.To show how children’s lives across four generations have changed.
C.To illustrate online providers have been affecting children negatively.
D.To explain how today’s digital native kids benefit from online providers.
11.What does the author recommend in the last paragraph
A.Focusing on the development of human civilization.
B.Appreciating nature and understand our place in it.
C.Relying more on technology to connect with nature.
D.Combing digital and traditional tools for navigation.

Deep underneath the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean lies a landscape of coral reefs colored
by photosynthetic algae (光合藻类). But in the early 1980s, a heat wave caused by the El Ni o
试卷第 7 页,共 14 页
climate phenomenon turned more than 90 percent of these corals lifeless white. The algae —
which had lived inside their coral hosts for millions of years — could no longer live within them.
Strong El Ni o events warmed up the same Pacific waters in the late 1990s and again in
2015 – 2016, but scientists noticed that these heat waves didn’t affect the reefs as badly as the
first. Diving after the latest event, marine biologist Ana Palacio saw some of the corals seemed to
be resisting or recovering from getting white.
Many adult corals are restricted to the reefs they build, making them particularly easily
affected by the changing climate. But they have developed their own trick of survival. Some
switch out the photosynthetic algae for more heat-resistant species. Others can use rows of tiny
hairs on their bodies to “fan” away harmful oxygen released by stressed-out algae.
Corals typically provide a small amount of nitrogen (氮) to their resident algae, and in
return they get carbon which they use as an energy source. Under heat stress, corals produce too
much nitrogen. This causes the algae to divide a lot more — storing up the carbon and keeping it
from their hosts. But baby corals exposed to short periods of heat stress learn to keep the nitrogen
to themselves and don’t overshare with the algae, maintaining a stable symbiosis (共生).
Biologist Cesar O. Pacherres says, “They have the tools to withstand (承受) certain things,
but past that limit, there’s not enough they can do.” But whatever heat-beating tools corals have
can help scientists develop protection strategies. Baby corals that can withstand stress are
especially important for conservation efforts because they can travel between reefs and potentially
share heat-tolerant genes in new places. “To some degree, they are already adapted to rising
temperatures, so they’re in some ways the source of the future,” says Madhavi Colton, a
conservation scientist.
12.What can be inferred about coral reefs after several El Ni o events
A.They grow faster. B.They can adapt to higher temperatures.
C.They are more colorful. D.They become more temperature-sensitive.
13.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.How adult corals attach themselves to reefs.
B.How adult corals handle climate change pressures.
C.The impact of photosynthetic algae on adult corals.
D.The formation of tiny hairs on the bodies of adult corals.
试卷第 8 页,共 14 页
14.What happens during the symbiosis of corals and algae under heat stress
A.Algae get less nitrogen. B.The corals divide more.
C.Corals obtain more energy. D.The carbon distribution is affected.
15.How can stress-resistant baby corals aid in the preservation of coral reefs
A.By serving as indicators of reef health.
B.By traveling to cooler places and growing.
C.By sharing heat-tolerant genes in new areas.
D.By providing nitrogen for their resident algae.

Four Easy Ways to Stop Overthinking Every Little Thing
While everyone overthinks situations once in a while, some people are troubled by a
constant flood of thoughts all the time. 16 And it greatly affects your mood. Here are
four ways to stop overthinking everything:
17
Overthinking can become such a habit that you don’t even recognize when you’re doing it.
Start paying attention to the way you think, so you can become aware of the problem. When
you’re replaying events in your mind over and over, or worrying about things you can’t control,
acknowledge that this isn’t productive. Thinking is only helpful when it leads to positive action.
Challenge your thoughts
18 So, before you conclude that falling sick is going to get you fired, or that
forgetting one deadline will cause you to become homeless, acknowledge that your thoughts may
be exaggeratedly negative. Take a step back and look at the evidence. What evidence do you have
that your thought is true What evidence do you have that your thought isn’t true
Learn mindfulness skills
It’s impossible to dwell on yesterday or worry about tomorrow when you’re living in the
present. Mindfulness will help you become more aware of the here and now. Just like any other
skill, mindfulness takes practice, but over time, it can decrease overthinking. 19

Change the channel
Telling yourself to stop thinking about something will backfire. Change the channel in your
brain by changing your activity. 20 Doing something different will put an end to the
flood of negative thoughts.
A.Keep the focus on problem-solving
B.Notice when you’re stuck in your head
C.When your time is up, move on to something else
D.It’s easy to get carried away with negative thoughts
E.Thinking too much prevents you from getting anything done
F.There are classes, books, apps, and videos available to help you learn
G.Exercise, engage in conversation on a new subject, or work on a project that distracts you

Marissa’s love of candy finally caught up with her. That morning she woke up with a
toothache and instead of bringing her to school, her mother took her to the dentist.
Marissa and her mother walked hand-in-hand toward the dentist’s office. Men and women
wearing long coats and long faces, their collars (衣领) up and their heads down, rushed in every
direction. Marissa leaned closer to her mother. When they stopped at the corner for the traffic light
to change, Marissa noticed something unusual.
A man with a large nose and dark eyes was sitting on a grate in the sidewalk. In front of
him was an open shoebox with money inside. Marissa had never seen anyone like him. She
wanted to take a closer look but her mother held her hand tightly. As they crossed the street to the
dentist’s building, Marissa looked back and watched the man over her shoulder. He sat quietly,
watching the people pass him by.
Up in the dentist’s office they checked in with the receptionist (接待员) who told them to
sit in the waiting room until the dentist was ready to see them. Marissa’s mother sat on the couch
crossing her legs and flipped (翻) through a magazine. Marissa asked her mother, “Is there really a
tooth fairy (仙子) ” “Of course, my darling. Remember to put your tooth under the pillow. The
tooth fairy will come and collect it tonight. And you will find money there tomorrow,” Marissa’s
mother explained, smiling. Instead of reading a book or playing with a toy, Marissa looked out the
window to the busy street below. The man was still sitting there. Most people walked by the man.
Some people, just a few, dropped coins into his shoebox. One man in a hurry actually stepped over
the man.

use rows of tiny hairs on their bodies to “fan” away harmful oxygen released by stressed-out
algae.(许多成年珊瑚局限于它们所建造的珊瑚礁,这使得它们特别容易受到气候变化的影响。
但它们已经形成了自己的生存技巧。一些珊瑚将光合藻类换成更耐热的物种。另一些则可以
