To most Scots, the name “Eric Liddell” needs no introduction. His story has become part of
national legend. At the 1924 Paris Olympics, Liddell won gold in the men’s 400 meters, setting a
new Olympic and world record. A century later, he remains one of Scotland’s most admired sports
figures.
After the Paris Olympics, Liddell made a choice that again surprised many. He returned to
Tianjin, the northern Chinese city. He was born there and spent his early years before returning to
Britain. In Tianjin, he taught at a college and helped design and promote the Minyuan Stadium.
Modeled after London’s Stamford Bridge, the stadium became one of Asia’s most advanced
sporting venues (场所) of its time.
When Japan launched a full-scale invasion of China in 1937, Liddell chose not to leave.
Instead, he moved to Hebei Province, where he taught villagers. By 1941, as conflict became
tense, he made the painful decision to send his pregnant wife and their two young daughters to
safety in Canada, while he stayed behind. He had secretly transported money by hiding it inside
hollowed-out bread. This simple but effective trick enabled him to deliver vital funds to Chinese
families in hardship.
In 1943, Liddell was imprisoned by Japanese forces in Weihlsen (now Weifang city in
Shandong Province) along with nearly 2,000 other Western civilians. There, he became known as
“Uncle Eric”. He taught science using scraps of paper, organized games, and repaired sports
equipment — even fixed hockey sticks for the children. He helped the elderly, shared his food,
and even gave away his prized running shoes to those in greater need.
Tragically, he died of a brain disease in 1945 at the age of 43, just months before the camp
was freed. In 1988, a memorial (纪念碑) was unveiled at his grave in Weifang with the words:
“He shall fly as eagles; he shall run and not be tired.”
4.What can be learned from paragraph 2
A.Eric Liddell was born in Britain and grew up in Tianjin.
B.Eric Liddell designed the Minyuan Stadium by himself.
C.The Minyuan Stadium was the most advanced venue in Asia.
D.Eric Liddell returned to Tianjin after the 1924 Paris Olympics.

MIAMI BEACH — South Florida is seeing a wave of new cars, but they won’t add to
traffic. That’s because the cars are made of marine-grade (海洋级) concrete and were placed
underwater. Over several days late last month, 22 life-size cars were lowered into the ocean,
several hundred feet off South Beach.
The project, called “Concrete Coral”, was organized by the nonprofit REEFLINE, a group
known for building underwater sculpture (雕塑) parks as a way to create human-made coral reefs
(珊瑚礁). And 2,200 native corals grown in a nearby Miami lab will soon be added to the
underwater structure, which will serve as a habitat rich in ocean biodiversity. “I think we are
making history here,” said Ximena Caminos, the group’s founder. “It’s a kind of underwater reef
that’s teaming up with science, teaming up with art.”
Colin Foord, who runs the Miami coral lab, explained that they will soon start the planting
process to create a forest of soft corals over the car sculptures. He said, “Nature will take over
again, and we’re helping by growing the soft corals.” Foord is confident that the native Gorgon

corals will boom because they were grown from survivors of the 2023 marine heat crisis which
destroyed vast quantities of Florida corals.
Besides the project serving as a testing ground for new coral transplantation, Miami Beach
governor Steven Meiner expects it to generate local jobs through ecotourism activities. The
nonprofit also offers community education programs, where volunteers can plant corals alongside
scientists, and a floating ocean learning center, where participants can gain firsthand experience in
coral protection.
Caminos acknowledges that the underwater structure won’t fix all the problems — such as
climate change and sea level rise — but she said it can serve as a driving force for dialogue about
the value of coastal ecosystems.
8.Why were the concrete cars placed underwater
A.To recycle the old cars. B.To promote a new art form.
C.To make a home for corals. D.To reduce the traffic pressure.
9.What is the main reason for Foord growing the Gorgon corals
A.Its soft nature. B.Its fast reproduction rate.
C.Its unique beauty. D.Its strong ability to survive.
10.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.Future plans of the group. B.Ways to protect corals.
C.Chain benefits of the project. D.Solutions to job shortage.
11.What is Caminos’ attitude towards the project
A.Concerned. B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.

On many college campuses, students almost always carry their phones wherever they go.
They text while walking to class and look through social media as they wait for lectures to start.
Silence often becomes screen time, and conversation stops.
One student, Seán Killingsworth, felt worried about this growing habit. “It was just like I’m
talking to a bunch of zombies,” he said, recalling how his peers (同龄人) would barely look up
from their phones even during group gatherings. He missed real conversation and wanted fewer
distractions.
试卷第 7 页,共 14 页
In 2023, Killingsworth started the Reconnect Movement. Students hand over their phones
to volunteers at the door and spend an hour socializing without screens.
During these phone-free meetings, participants sit in circles, share favorite music playlists,
and talk about everything from academic stress to personal hobbies. “At first it can feel awkward,”
said one club leader. Many people use their phone as a digital comfort when they feel nervous or
unsure of what to say. But after a few minutes, they relax and enjoy the conversation.
Experts still debate how smartphones affect mental health. Some studies say taking a break
helps people feel calmer and happier, while other research points out that social media can be a
valuable tool for students to express themselves and stay connected with peers who share similar
interests or struggles.
Students say the meetings help them reconnect with friends and classmates. Killingsworth
calls them “human connection habitats”, places where people can remember how natural
conversation feels.
The group hopes that practicing this habit makes students notice how often they reach for a
distraction. By being present together, they learn to balance technology with real people.
12.What does the underlined word “zombies” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Robot-like people. B.Absent-minded people.
C.Socially awkward people. D.Screen-glued people.
13.What are students asked to do in the Reconnect Movement
A.Talk freely on the phone. B.Have a screen-free chat with peers.
C.Show each other social media stuff. D.Share their phone screens with volunteers.
14.How can participants benefit from the Movement
A.Form a good habit of connection. B.Maintain a healthy mental state.
C.Develop more conversation skills. D.Remove digital distractions completely.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Say No to Mobile Phones B.Phones: A Digital Comfort
C.Reconnect: Real Communication D.Experts’ Debates on Smartphones

Are you able to cook a healthy meal Are you able to manage your money well Are you able
to sew on a button 16 This highlights a significant gap in modern education, which
heavily prioritizes academic achievement and strict testing, often at the expense of practical life
skills.
Schools have done well in preparing us to be academic achievers in school, but may not have
prepared us well enough in developing life skills. 17 For those without these basic skills,
the pandemic lockdown was a rude shock. With restaurants closed and home services stopped, it
would have been satisfying to cook a meal or fix a light bulb. It’s a shame that schools produce
scholarly individuals who are unprepared for simple home tasks.
18 For example, financial management fosters responsibility and caution, while lessons
on investment teach wealth growth. Equipped with this literacy, students can better discuss
financial goals with parents, and budgeting knowledge can steer them away from overspending.
Thus, in our complex world, schools must teach beyond academic subjects.
After all, all the responsibility cannot be transferred to the home. The argument for parents
teaching practical life skills overlooks modern realities. Many working parents lack the time, and
some may not possess the proficiency themselves. 19 .
Sandra Carey, a writer, puts it appropriately: “Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One
helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life.” School is not simply a place to pass
knowledge and prepare us for a career. 20
A.Thus, a balanced approach is needed early on.
B.For instance, many communities offer evening classes for adults.
C.Instead, it equips us with the wisdom to construct a fulfilling life.
D.Not many of us can confidently nod our heads to these questions.
E.Consequently, the central role in bridging this gap must fall to our schools.
F.By integrating practical skills, schools can teach a more complete set of life values.
G.Yet practical skills such as cooking and housekeeping are essential in the real world.

Growing up, I hated sports, especially the fierce battle over a single ball. I always wondered
why crowds were so watching games. To me, games seemed absolutely .
Weeks ago, during a class basketball match, the gym was and everyone was
cheering on the sidelines, while I stood there with my arms crossed. However, as the
game heated up, the air rang with deafening yells. The players were wonderful. They moved
quickly, passing the ball with perfect timing. It was as if they could read each other’s ,
each knowing where the others were. The captain took the lead in the attack,
occasionally nodding or gesturing to encourage his teammates.
As the game progressed, I started to feel something . I found myself
along with the crowd. Words like “You got this!” and “Keep pushing!” escaped my lips. The
players’ passion and spirit were so that even I was pulled into the atmosphere. At the
wonderful shot, I clapped , my heart racing. When the ball was , I felt genuinely
let down,
That day, I came to a new of the love and effort players put into every play.

A determined 10-year-old girl Callie lived with her parents and older brother, Ben, on a
quiet farm. Though she was small and thin, she loved helping with housework, especially feeding
the horses in their big barn (畜棚). One side of the barn housed the horse stalls (马厩), while the
other side was piled with hay bales (干草捆) for feeding.
One afternoon, Callie went into the barn to feed the horses. As she walked towards the tall
stacks of hay, she suddenly stopped. A tiny, weak sound came through the dusty air. Meow...
meow...
Her heart jumped. A kitten must be trapped in the hay! Breathing hard, she ran back to find
Ben and her father. “Dad! Ben! Come quick! A kitten is stuck in the hay!” she called urgently.
Ben sighed, putting down his tools. Her father looked doubtful. “Probably just the wind, Callie,”
he said gently. But they followed her to the barn.
They stood quietly near the hay stacks, listening. The barn was silent. “Hear anything ”
Ben asked. Their father shook his head. “Nothing, sweetheart. Maybe it was just a mouse. Don’t
worry about it.” Disappointed, Callie watched them leave.
After dinner, Callie slipped back to the barn, determined. She stood still, listening
attentively. And there it was again! Meow... meow... Weaker now, but clear. She raced back to the
house. Her father was watching TV.
“Dad, please!” she pleaded (恳求). “I heard it again! It is a kitten! Please, just come check

Quietly, she put on her coat, took a flashlight and slipped out. Inside the barn, near the hay stacks,
Callie held her breath, listening with full attention. Then, it came: Meow... meow... Her flashlight
beam swept across the bales. There! Near the bottom of a tall stack, she spotted a tiny movement-a
small patch of gray fur barely visible between two enormous bales. She rushed over and pushed
the bales again, but they wouldn’t move.
“I have no choice but to get help!” Callie thought to herself. She raced back home and
quickly awoke Ben and their father. Seeing Callie’s worried face and absolute certainty, they both
hurried with her back to the barn. Working together, Ben and their father carefully moved the
heavy hay bales which Callie pointed at. Eventually, a narrow passage was revealed. There was a
tiny gray kitten, its eyes wide with fright. Trembling and exhausted, it let out another pitiful
meow. Carefully, Callie’s father reached in and gently held the little creature out. Callie’s heart
swelled with relief and joy as she looked at the rescued kitten, safe and warm in her father’s large,
gentle hands.
