Famous poet and translator Arthur Sze is the 25th US poet laureate (桂冠诗人), appointed
by the Library of Congress. He was sworn in on October 9 for a one-year term and is the first
Asian American to hold the position of official poet of the US.
Born in New York City, Sze is the son of Chinese immigrants. He briefly attended the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and studied math and science in 1968, but while sitting in a
math lecture, he felt inspired to write poems in the back of his notebook. “I could feel a thrill of
language,” said Sze. He soon transferred (转学) to the University of California, Berkeley, to study
poetry, and then created his own major translating ancient Chinese poems.
Much of Sze’s work was influenced by Chinese poetry, featuring short lines and singular
images as their focus. In a 2021 interview on the podcast Between the Covers, he compared the
treatment of the self in his own work to a memory of a Chinese landscape painting. “I see a
landscape painting where there are mighty mountains and waterfalls, and there’s a little path and a
tiny man approaching a bridge. There’s a sense of man being very small in the large scale of
things. I do think I carry that sense, that Asian sense of a self being small in a landscape.”
The job of the poet laureate is to promote the reading of poetry, and different laureates
choose different fields and approaches. In the announcement, Sze said he intended to focus on
promoting translated poetry. “As laureate, I feel a great responsibility to promote the ways poetry,
especially poetry in translation, can impact our daily lives,” he wrote in the announcement. “We
live in such a fast-paced world: poetry helps us slow down, deepening our attention and living
more fully.”
24.What can we learn about Arthur Sze’s appointment
A.He is the youngest poet to receive this honour.
B.He plans to spend one term digging into poetry.
C.He is the first Asian American to assume the post.
D.He was offered the position for translating poems.
25.Why did Sze transfer to the University of California
A.To study poetry. B.To get a scholarship.
试卷第 5 页,共 14 页
C.To avoid math lectures. D.To learn a new language.
26.What does the author imply in Paragraph 3
A.Chinese paintings focus on landscape.
B.Asians view themselves as being small.
C.Sze promotes Chinese culture via social media.
D.Sze’s works bear the features of Chinese poetry.
27.How does poetry influence our daily lives according to Sze
A.By bringing focus and richness. B.By entertaining different readers.
C.By serving its academic purpose. D.By changing the fast-paced world.

Rotten seaweed is starting to pile up on beaches across the Caribbean. The uncontrolled
blooms of sticky brown algae (藻类) called sargassum have become an annual disaster for the
coastal areas. Removing seaweed and sending it to the landfill is costly and takes up declining
space in landfills. Luckily, a company in Grenada, a small island nation in the Caribbean, has a
better idea.
The company that would like to use Grenadian sargassum is SarGas, a start-up founded in
2023 to harvest the sargassum before it hits the beaches and turn it into a renewable source of fuel.
The company has set up a small machine called Digester that uses bacteria to swallow sargassum
and release methane (甲烷), the main component of natural gas.
Instead of letting the methane escape and warm the planet, as it would if the sargassum
rotted on the shore or in a landfill, SarGas collects the gas and uses it to fuel the oven at a local
bakery. Now the start-up is applying for a permit to build a bigger Digester that would power a
biogas-fueled generator (发电机) to make electricity for Grenadians.
Generating electricity this way would be cheaper and cleaner, said SarGas CEO Benjamin
Nestorovic. Almost all Grenadian electricity is made from generators running on imported diesel
(柴油), which causes pollution and forces Grenadians to pay some of the highest electricity rates
on Earth. That’s starting to change as Grenada installs solar panels, but biogas complements solar,
because the sargassum-based fuel can generate electricity at night.
The first planned SarGas generator would use 5,000 to 8,000 tons of sargassum per year. It
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
could generate 160 kilo-watts of power, which is about half a percent of Grenada’s peak demand.
By saving diesel and preventing methane emissions at the landfill, it would avoid the equivalent
(等量) of about 2,000 cars’ worth of greenhouse emissions.
28.How does the machine Digester work
A.By trapping algae on beaches. B.By recycling rubbish in landfills.
C.By using a renewable source of fuel. D.By breaking seaweed down for energy.
29.What does the underlined word “complements” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Interacts with. B.keeps up with. C.Competes with. D.Pairs well with.
30.What effect will the SarGas generator have on Grenada
A.It will remove the pressure of local landfills.
B.It will address a national environmental issue.
C.The nation will depend on imported fossil fuels.
D.The nation will offer new economic opportunities.
31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.From Seaweed to Power B.From Rubbish to Digester
C.Calling for Cleanup in Beaches D.Turning Sargassum into Charity

Nostalgia (怀旧) is a complex emotion, which blends longing for a cherished past and the
bitter-sweet realization that one can never fully return to that time.
A team of researchers wondered whether nostalgia might help people manage their social
connections and networks. So they conducted a series of studies examining whether nostalgia not
only brings temporary feelings of connectedness but also motivates people to seek and eventually
achieve close connection with others.
In the first two studies, the researchers surveyed 449 undergraduate students from the
University at Buffalo and an additional 396 U. S. adults. Participants completed a questionnaire
measuring “nostalgia proneness (倾向)” to assess how frequently they felt nostalgic and how
important they found those experiences to be. They also reported the number of people in their
“closest networks”, “close networks” and “less close networks”.
Participants who were highly prone to nostalgia had more people in their inner-most
试卷第 7 页,共 14 页
friendship circle. Further, this tendency was linked to their motivation to maintain their social
network. Nostalgic people seem to be more driven to invest resources in keeping their
relationships over time.
However, it was not clear from the data whether nostalgia caused changes in behavior and
motivation. In a third study, they investigated it by analyzing data from the Netherlands that
tracked the same group of 520 participants from 2013 to 2019, recording things such as their
proneness to nostalgia and their social network size. The finding most exciting to the team had
something to do with change over time. Nostalgia measured at an earlier time predicted a larger
network of close ties later, suggesting nostalgia could be driving changes in social behavior that
promote connection.
So go ahead and listen to your favorite song from primary school or watch the TV show
that made you laugh when you were young. Nostalgia may act as an emotional signal that guides
us to reflect on what truly matters in our lives and inspires us to live to the fullest in the present
with our loved ones and aim to move toward a shared future.
32.Why did the researchers conduct the studies
A.To check nostalgia’s impact on memory. B.To measure nostalgia’s temporary effects.
C.To see if nostalgia strengthens social bonds. D.To test if nostalgia controls people’s behavior.
33.What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3
A.The assessment tool. B.The research process.
C.The technical challenge. D.The theoretical foundation.
34.What did the third study find about people prone to nostalgia
A.They preferred online social interactions. B.They tended to expand social ties with age.
C.They thought highly of stable relationships. D.They were more popular in social networks.
35.What is the author’s attitude toward nostalgia’s social role
A.Critical. B.Doubtful. C.Favourable. D.Cautious.

In a world filled with constant hustle (忙碌) and screens, a typical walk might be
试卷第 8 页,共 14 页
accompanied by distractions. 36 The idea is that you focus on a single color and follow it
wherever it appears, uncovering hidden beauty in everyday environments.
Walking has many physical benefits, but it’s the meditative (冥想的) aspect of a colour
walk that’s so impactful. 37 Yet, when we set an intention to focus on something
specific, a colour in this case, we automatically root ourselves in the present moment, coming
away from the inner chatter (唠叨).
38 Before you decide to go out on your walk, select a colour that feels right for you
at the beginning of your walk. Then, as you take your first steps outside, start to notice it. That
colour may be striking and easy to spot, or, sometimes, it requires you to keep your eyes open for
that selected colour.
As you pay more attention to your environment, you may find yourself connecting to your
surroundings in a way you didn’t previously. A colour walk helps us focus on something other
than what’s going on inside our heads, allowing us to see the “same old” in a new light. 39
Even in more built-up areas, things are more colourful than you thought.
With the specific colour in mind, don’t hesitate to stretch your legs outdoors and embrace
the chance to connect with your surroundings. The colour walk is a simple yet powerful way to
see the world with new eyes. By choosing a colour and letting it guide you, you’ll break free from
routine. 40
A.How do you get started
B.What colours can impact your mood
C.However, a colour walk is full of intention.
D.But the colour walk is distinct from these walking trends.
E.And what’s lovely about the practice is that you can carry it out anywhere.
F.It’s a delightful practice that can turn an ordinary day into an inspiring adventure.
G.Even while walking, we may still experience negative thoughts or worries about the day.

Today was the day for the picnic at Blackberry Farm! Arizona, her younger sister Ida, and
their parents had been looking forward to it all week. Vivid images of rolling hills, friendly cows,
and chasing chickens had filled the girls’ dreams.
“Ida, I baked cookies shaped like all the animals we might see!” Arizona announced
proudly that morning, showing her sister the carefully decorated treats. There were horses, pigs,
sheep, and even a few questionable-looking chickens.
“I want the horsey one!” little Ida exclaimed, jumping up and down.
“Not now, sweetie,” their mother said gently. “We’ll eat them at the picnic.”
After a final check, they piled into the car, laughter and chatter filling the space. They had
driven for about twenty minutes when Arizona suddenly realized something.
“The cookies!” she cried out. “And the picnic blanket! They’re still on the kitchen table!”
The whole family let out a sound of disappointment. Dad sighed but made a U-turn. “No
one wants a picnic without Arizona’s special cookies,” he said, trying to lighten the mood.
After getting the cookies, they hit the road again. Now running late, Dad made a decision.
“I know a shortcut,” he declared, turning onto a narrow, unpaved road the family had never used
before. “It should save us some time.”
Almost immediately, the smooth ride disappeared. The car bounced and shook violently on
the stony path. A worrying clunk-clunk-thud started coming from underneath the car. Then, the
engine died completely. Silence fell, broken only by Ida’s sobs.

Dad tried to restart the car, but in vain. He got out, looked underneath, and came back with
a worried face. “We’re stuck.” A call to road service confirmed their fears: help was available, but
the nearest roadside-service truck was two hours away. The two sisters sank back in their seats,
their excitement replaced by a heavy cloud of disappointment. Their perfect picnic day was
ruined.

Ever since Aja was little, she has loved reading. Because of all her books, Aja never felt
alone. So she began to collect books. After collecting them for a few years, Aja had a lot of books.
However, the other kids in her neighborhood did not read much, and there was no public library
nearby. In order to share her books with the other kids, Aja came up with an idea. She could set up
her own library at her home! And that is exactly what she did. At first, Aja was worried that the
neighborhood kids would not come to her library. But when several of them began stopping by her
home to look through her books, she was relieved. By and by, more and more kids came to her
library to read. Today so many children come to borrow her books that Aja gives them library
cards similar to the ones that real libraries use. Aja even helps some of the children learn to read.
Everyone thinks Aja’s library is wonderful, but she is modest about what she has done. “Just
seeing other kids love reading is happy enough for me,” she says.

77. Just then, a wildflower field jumped into Dad’s sight. A brilliant idea struck him. “Why
wait miserably in the car with everything for a picnic right here ” he exclaimed, his eyes sparkling
with enthusiasm. Without hesitation, he began spreading the picnic blanket. Mom, following his
lead, arranged Arizona’s animal cookies while singing cheerfully. The sisters, their initial sadness
quickly disappearing, happily helped set up the feast. They were immersed in the beautiful
scenery. With butterflies dancing around them, their disappointment was replaced by merry
laughter.
When the roadside-service truck came, they felt unwilling to leave this pretty field. The two
hours passed in a flash, filled with storytelling and games among the beautiful wildflowers.
Although the mechanic fixed their car, it was too late to make it to Blackberry Farm. “Sometimes
the best adventures are the unplanned ones,” Dad comforted the sisters. As they drove away,
Arizona glanced back, realizing their ruined plan had led to a truly unique and memorable
experience. They had just discovered unexpected awesomeness right under their nose!
