It wasn’t until I was 17 that I was officially diagnosed with nut and dairy allergies (过敏症)
after a life-threatening reaction. One bite of a dish containing peanuts or milk can cause projectile
vomiting (喷射性呕吐), swollen eyes, and a closing throat.
Fast forward through more than 20 allergic reactions to nuts and dairy, I took responsibility
for my safety by always checking ingredients and carrying medicine, but accidents still happened.
Three years ago, I had a serious reaction at a work conference after eating a cake that contained
milk. I ended up unconscious in the hospital, and when I recovered consciousness four hours later,
I overheard a doctor say, “She’s not going to die on my watch!” That really hit home. I was so
close to death.
After these serious reactions, I started to struggle with anxiety and panic attacks, often
breaking down in tears in the workplace restroom when invited out for lunch, unable to explain
why I was so frightened. It became harder and harder for me to talk about things. I refused to open
up when anyone asked me whether I was OK. Instead of recognizing this as a warning, I withdrew
further, believing that putting on a brave face would protect me. But that wasn’t the case.
I clearly remember when my therapist asked me to say out loud that I loved myself. I
couldn’t do it and wept uncontrollably. At that moment, I realized I didn’t love myself, and that
hurt. For years, I had been blaming myself.
It took a long time and continuous effort to develop self-love. I discovered it through
running, walking, listening to audio books, and reading. I also practiced yoga and enjoyed cooking
allergy-free meals from scratch. These activities have become a daily part of my life, encouraging
me to keep moving forward, alongside therapy.
When I was asked to share my journey in a book, I agreed. Writing became another form of
therapy, helping me reflect on my progress, the lessons learned, and the strength gained. Most
importantly, it strengthened my gratitude for those who supported me, recognized my struggles,
and encouraged me to seek help. Through this process, I’ve learned that self-love isn’t a
destination, but an ongoing journey.

A.An experience of a hospital stay.

Chile’s Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on Earth. Now, local researchers are
exploring whether “fog harvesting” — a technique that collects moisture from fog — could
provide much-needed water for people in poor urban areas.
“Our study changes how we view fog water use — from a small rural solution to a practical
water resource for cities,” said Dr. Virginia Carter Gamberini, an assistant professor at
Universidad Mayor. “Our findings show that fog can serve as a supplementary (补充的) urban
water supply in dry lands where climate change makes water shortages worse.”
The researchers carried out a year-long field study in Alto Hospicio. It is a fast-growing city
located in the Atacama Desert. Because of the city’s rapid growth, about 10,000 people live in
poor urban areas. Only 1.6% of these areas are connected to water supply networks. Most people
receive water through trucks.
The researchers found that in a 100-square-kilometer area surrounding Alto Hospicio,
between 0.2 and 5 liters of fog water could be harvested per square meter each day. This potential,
however, is confined to the higher altitude (海拔) outside urban areas. In August and September
of 2024, during the study’s peak season, collection potential reached up to 10 liters per square
meter per day.
“By showing the potential of fog harvesting in Alto Hospicio, this study lays the
groundwork for broader use in other urban areas that face water shortages,” said Nathalie
Verbrugghe, a researcher involved in the study. “Fog harvesting, however, should not be seen as
the only solution to water shortages. It is part of a broader urban water management strategy.”
Based on an average water collection rate of 2.5 liters per square meter per day, the
researchers said that 17,000 square meters could produce enough water to meet the weekly water
needs of poor urban areas and that 110 square meters could meet the yearly need for the irrigation
(灌溉) of the city’s green spaces.
“We hope to encourage policymakers to combine this source into national water strategies,”
Carter said. “This could improve cities’ ability to deal with climate change and rapid urbanization
while improving the supply of clean water.”
8.What is the main goal of the study
A.To study fog harvesting’s potential as a water resource.
B.To analyze how fog can be used to attract settlements.
C.To explore rapid urbanization’s impact on water demand.
D.To show the effectiveness of fog harvesting in rural areas.
9.What does the underlined word “confined” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Unimportant. B.Limited.
C.Similar. D.Connected.
10.What can we infer from Nathalie Verbrugghe’s words
A.Water sources in cities should be further increased.
B.Fog harvesting is more practical in cities than in rural areas.
C.Fog harvesting can play a role in urban water supply.
D.A broader urban water management strategy is in strong need.
11.What does Carter hope to achieve with fog harvesting
A.Reduce the need for water trucks.
B.Call for more attention to climate change.
C.Slow down urbanization in Alto Hospicio.
D.Adopt fog water at the national level.

Recently, the Nepalese government announced an increase in the fee for Mount Everest
climbing permits on the southern slope, with an increase of over 35%.
Most climbers start from the southern slope of Mount pared to the northern
slope (on the Chinese side), the southern slope (on the Nepalese side) has a climate more suitable
for human climbing. The southern slope receives enough sunshine and has a warmer climate,
while the northern slope is colder and more shaded. Additionally, the land on the southern slope is
relatively flatter, with less steep slopes compared to the northern slope.
This fee change means a significant increase in revenue. Nepal, a country with limited
financial resources, relies heavily on the fees from foreign climbers and other related expenses as
a major source of revenue and employment.
This decision is not driven only by financial factors. In recent years, the environmental
issues at Everest have become increasingly serious, with trash pollution and safety risks drawing
global attention. Climbing professionals have criticized the low entry thresholds (门槛) for
climbing, leading to overcrowding at Everest, while the local government has done little to keep
the environment clean or protect climbers. Many explorers and environmentalists hope that the
extra revenue can be used to increase the frequency of trash cleanup efforts, and improve the
natural environment of Everest. At the same time, it can be used to improve safety facilities.
In fact, this is just the beginning. More efforts and funds will be needed in the future to
truly improve the environment of Everest. For a long time, Everest has been suffering from the
pain of trash pollution. The generation of new trash by climbers is continuous and the
self-purification capacity (自我净化能力) of Everest is poor. Besides, the difficulty of trash
cleanup is considerable.
We hope that the Nepalese government can make good use of this extra revenue to make a
greater contribution to the future of Everest. At the same time, we also hope that all climbers will
respect nature, care for the environment, obey the rules, and jointly protect this beautiful “top of
the world”.
12.Why do most climbers choose the southern slope
A.It charges lower climbing fees.
B.It offers climbers a better view.
C.It is less difficult to climb from.
D.It sets fewer limits on climbers.
13.What’s the purpose of raising the climbing permit fees
A.To fund research on Everest’s natural environment.
B.To offer climbers a better mountaineering experience.
C.To support the construction of more climbing facilities.
D.To address economic, environmental and safety issues.
14.What does the author mainly want to tell us in paragraph 5
A.Cleaning up trash at Everest is extremely challenging.
B.Everest’s environmental issues won’t be solved in a day.
C.Climbers are the main cause of trash pollution at Everest.
D.Everest’s ecosystem is more sensitive than climbers think.
15.What does the author expect from climbers
A.They would be more careful to avoid accidents.
B.They would behave themselves to protect Everest.
C.They would make good use of Everest’s resources.
D.They would make a contribution to Nepal’s economy.

It can be challenging to combine different colors of your clothes and end up with a
harmonious look. 16 It will help you match colors confidently and create stylish outfits.
Stick to a color palette.
17 Some popular examples of color palettes include earth tones, soft shades, and
jewel tones. By sticking to a specific group of colors, you can easily mix and match different
pieces of clothing while still maintaining a well-matched look.
Add neutral colors.
Neutral colors, such as black, white, gray, and beige (米黄色), are the unsung heroes of
color coordination. They go with almost any color and can help balance out a bold outfit. 18
Neutrals act as a foundation, making it easier to experiment with other colors.
Experiment with patterns.
Combining patterns can be tricky, but it can also add some fun and personality to your
outfits. When mixing, make sure to keep the colors consistent. For example, if you’re wearing
shoes with pink and green flowers, pair them with a skirt that has pink and green dots. 19
20
In fashion, there are no hard and fast rules. Sometimes, the most interesting outfits are the
ones that break the rules and mix unexpected colors. If you’re feeling bold, try mixing two
contrasting colors, like red and green or yellow and purple. The key to making this work is to
balance the colors out with neutral pieces and wear them with confidence.
A.Play with unexpected color combinations.
B.Master the art of harmonious color matching.
C.Colors can be powerful tools in expressing your personality.
D.This way, the patterns won’t look out of place and add charm.
E.A simple way is to choose a set of colors that work well together.
F.But this guide offers practical advice even if you are new to fashion.
G.If you wear a bright shirt, pair it with black jeans or white sneakers.

When my mom was a high school student, she was a cheerleader (拉拉队队员) in her
school. I thought it was interesting, unaware that she had taken great efforts and faced big
challenges to make it. When I was in high school, one day, I excitedly tried out for my school’s
basketball cheerleading team, wanting to be a cheerleader like Mom.
Days later, the school posted the girls who made the team on a big white poster board taped
right on the wall of the main office! I found that my two friends’ names were on the board.
However, my name wasn’t. I was so upset, feeling like a big failure. And having little confidence
in myself now, I wondered whether to give up trying out for the school’s gymnastics team the next
month — previously I had decided to try.
As I stepped off the school bus and walked towards my house, Mom was looking out of the
kitchen window. My little brother and sister raced out to welcome me home. But I ignored them,
walking and kicking the small stones on the ground as I approached the door. The smell of freshly
made cookies filled the air as I opened the door and took off my shoes.

Mom dried her hands and looked at me, examining my eyes. She pulled out another plate of
fresh cookies that were in high temperatures, keeping one eye on my hungry brother and one on
me. I threw down my schoolbag and headed straight to my room with my head down. I shut my
door, only to hear a light knock.
“Vicki, can I come in ” her quiet voice asked as I watched the door open. She held her arms
out to me and said, “I called the office at school to find out. I know you didn’t make it.” I couldn’t
believe that she would be so nosy (爱管闲事的) as to call the office to find out who made the
cheerleading team.

Now, local researchers are exploring whether “fog harvesting” —
a technique that collects moisture from fog — could provide much-needed water for people in
Our findings show
that fog can serve as a supplementary (补充的) urban water supply in dry lands where climate
故选 A 项。
The researchers found that in a 100-square-kilometer area
surrounding Alto Hospicio, between 0.2 and 5 liters of fog water could be harvested per square
This potential, however, is confined
to the higher altitude
By showing the potential of fog harvesting in Alto Hospicio, this
study lays the groundwork for broader use in other urban areas that face water shortages,” said
Nathalie Verbrugghe, a researcher involved in the study. “Fog harvesting, however, should not be
seen as the only solution to water shortages. It is part of a broader urban water management

We hope to encourage policymakers to combine this source
into national water strategies,” Carter said.( “我们希望鼓励政策制定者将这一来源纳入国家水

Compared to the northern slope (on the Chinese side), the
southern slope (on the Nepalese side) has a climate more suitable for human climbing. The
southern slope receives enough sunshine and has a warmer climate, while the northern slope is
colder and more shaded. Additionally, the land on the southern slope is relatively flatter, with less
steep slopes compared to the northern slope.
This decision is not driven only by financial factors. In recent
years, the environmental issues at Everest have become increasingly serious, with trash pollution
and safety risks drawing global attention.
Many explorers and
environmentalists hope that the extra revenue can be used to increase the frequency of trash
cleanup efforts, and improve the natural environment of Everest. At the same time, it can be used
to improve safety facilities.
In fact, this is just the beginning. More efforts and funds will be
needed in the future to truly improve the environment of Everest. For a long time, Everest has
been suffering from the pain of trash pollution. The generation of new trash by climbers is
continuous and the self-purification capacity (自我净化能力) of Everest is poor. Besides, the
difficulty of trash cleanup is considerable.
At the same time, we also hope that all climbers will respect
nature, care for the environment, obey the rules, and jointly protect this beautiful “top of the
world”.
