When I entered senior high school as a freshman, English became my biggest source of
frustration and embarrassment. My scores never climbed above 80 out of 150, leaving me at the
试卷第 4 页,共 14 页
bottom of the class. Classmates often shot me disdainful glances when English papers were
handed out, and some even joked that I was “a lost cause” in languages. Teachers shook their
heads at my grades, and I grew increasingly inferior, hiding my homework whenever others
passed by and avoiding oral English activities like the plague. I tried self-study a few times, but
the words felt like meaningless symbols and grammar rules a tangled mess—soon, I gave up,
convinced I’d never master the language.
Everything shifted when Lily joined our class in the second semester. Bright and gentle, she
was a top student with English scores consistently in the grade’s top 5. Her smooth pronunciation
and insightful answers in class left everyone impressed, but what touched me most was her
kindness. Once, after I scored a mere 73 on a test and sat alone in despair, she walked over softly.
“Don’t give up,” she said, pointing out my mistakes and explaining grammar points patiently.
Staring into her warm eyes, I felt a sudden urge to narrow the gap between us—not just to win her
favor, but to prove I could stand beside someone as excellent as her.
I threw myself into English with unshakable resolve. Starting with vocabulary, I bought a
notebook and wrote down every difficult word repeatedly—sometimes 400 times a day until my
fingers ached. I stayed up late reading simple English articles, looked up every unknown word,
and copied model essays to learn sentence structures. I also mustered the courage to ask Lily for
help after class, she always recommended useful resources and encouraged me when I stumbled.
There were setbacks: mock exams with little progress, classmates mocking my “foolish pursuit,”
and nights I wanted to quit. But the thought of Lily’s belief in me kept me going.
Two years of relentless effort paid off. My scores rose steadily, and by senior year, I was
scoring over 120 in mock exams. In the college entrance examination, I achieved 125-far beyond
my wildest dreams as a freshman. When I told Lily, she smiled and said, “I always knew you
could do it.” Looking back, Lily was the spark that ignited my motivation, but the real victory was
overcoming my own doubts. I learned that no matter how tough the start, persistence and
self-belief can turn even the most impossible goals into reality.

For so long, busyness has become part of who we are. To be busy is to be productive, and
to be productive is to be successful. We tend to think having a jam-packed calendar and flying
through life at a fast speed are an effective marker of how well we are doing. But a lot of the
people who live like this are not actually doing all that well. They are exhausted and
overwhelmed. To tackle this, we have to slow down.
In recent times, there has been a push-back against busyness. More people are trying to find
more time for themselves, and say “no” to more invites. “Slow living” enthusiasts will tell you life
is better when you’re not moving so quickly. They say taking tasks one at a time, never rushing or
over-filling your diary gives you the space to appreciate things as they happen. To my thinking,
slow living is all about being conscious of the here-and-now, making considered decisions about
how to spend your time, and enjoying the little things in life, which benefits you both physically
and mentally.
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
For those living with chronic (慢性的) illness, slow living can be a lifeline. Hannah
Hoskins suffers from severe muscle pain, and some days she only has the energy to sit up for ten
minutes. “Slow living saved my life. It tells you that productivity isn’t the end goal and that as
humans we need to be able to have full lives rather than working nonstop. Realizing it’s literally
impossible to ‘do it all’ sets you free to decide if you actually want to do all the things you are
doing.”
Hannah says that her tip for anyone trying to practice slow living is to start small. “Say ‘no’
to that thing you feel you should do, but actually fear,” she suggests. “When you realize that the
world doesn’t end and people don’t hate you if you say no to things, try it again and then just keep
going. The more you ask yourself — Is this something I really want to do or am I doing it because
I feel I should — it becomes much easier to just stop doing things you don’t enjoy.”
28.What does the underlined word “jam-packed” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Flexible. B.Crowded. C.Consistent. D.Stable.
29.What does the author think of slow living
A.It is beneficial for people’s health.
B.It is a lifestyle few people can practice.
C.It will boost people’s enthusiasm for their work.
D.It allows people to make more preparations for the future.
30.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3
A.Introduce a patient’s recovery process.
B.Highlight the necessity of taking physical exercise.
C.Offer some methods for improving working efficiency.
D.Prove the benefit of slow living by giving an example.
31.According to Hannah Hoskins, what should you do to practice slow living
A.Finish whatever task is assigned to you.
B.Decline tasks you fear but feel duty-bound to do.
C.Challenge yourself to do a more demanding job.
D.Strike up a good relationship with people around you.

Soon after Mr. & Mrs. Bacchus started farming their little piece of land, they faced a major
problem — a group of birds fed on their valuable crops. Then, a man stopped on the road outside
their house, and asked the couple if he could take photographs of the birds on the property. Later,
he suggested that instead of trying to get rid of the birds, they should learn to live together with
them, and Maraksacha Reserve was born.
Today, the couple credit (把……归功于) this man, the famous bird photographer Manu
Espinosa, with changing their lives, and helping them persuade others of the importance of
conservation in this region.
Birding tourism is developing successfully in Ecuador, with increasing numbers of
specialist tour groups. Ecuador contains a variety of ecosystems, which helps explain why it’s
among the top 10 countries in the world for bird variety. The country is home to over 1,600 bird
species — nearly double the number found in all of Europe — within an area just slightly larger
than the UK.
As the business of birding grows, more and more farmers are switching their land from
agriculture to bird reserves, benefiting not just the birds, but the country’s economy too. One
remarkable example is the Ajila family, who have devoted themselves to preserving the
long-wattled umbrella bird. On his land near Recinto, landowner Luis Ajila has switched from
dairy (乳制品) farming to conservation, replanting trees and promoting the site to wildlife tourists
— work that he says is a better job than farming.
“Wildlife tourism is much more profitable (盈利的) than farming, but that wasn’t our only
motivation (动机),” says Luis Jr., Ajila’s son. “We aimed to protect not just the umbrella bird, but
all the unique wildlife here, for future generations.”
Since 2005, Angel Paz has transformed his former dairy farm into a bird reserve. At first,
things didn’t go to plan: it took a month for the first visitor to arrive, and he paid just $10 for a
four-hour tour. Since then, however, thousands of people have flooded in. “I have protected my
home and its bird life for almost two decades, and finally watched the population of wildlife —
and the people who visit — have increased significantly,” Angel Paz says.
32.What advice did the photographer give to the couple
A.Existing in harmony with birds. B.Photographing the birds.
C.Protecting their valuable crops. D.Taking care of their property.
试卷第 8 页,共 14 页
33.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.How Ecuador is geographically unique. B.What makes Ecuador a birding destination.
C.How birding tourism is operated in Ecuador. D.What impact birding tourism has on the
economy.
34.What have the Ajila family achieved
A.Helping other farmers live a better life. B.Changing the landscapes of their region.
C.Using new technology in modern farming. D.Combining profitability with sustainability.
35.What can we learn from ngel Paz’s story in the last paragraph
A.Long-term efforts will finally pay off. B.Well begun is half done.
C.The early bird catches the worm. D.The secret to success is adaptability.

Learning how to communicate with your teens is essential to maintaining a healthy
relationship. 36 .
Lecture less, listen more
As a parent, it’s easy to fall into the routine of lecturing your teenagers. After all, you have
a lot of life experience and you want to share it with them. 37 . So find ways to actively
engage with and listen to your teens. Ask them questions like “Is there anything I can do to help
you feel better ”
Break down communication barriers
38 When it comes to communication, emotional barriers prevent teens from feeling
secure enough to talk about what’s going on in their lives. This can cause them to start lying. For
example, if you talk to your teenage daughter about changing her behaviour, don’t start the
conversation by criticizing her. Instead, empathize (产生共鸣) with her and make sure she feels
safe opening up about her emotions.
39
When something goes wrong in your teens’ life, of course you want to help. Teenagers will
make mistakes, and that’s okay! When your teens come to you to talk, resist the urge to blame or

shame them for whatever has happened. Instead, let your teenagers know that it’s okay that they
made a mistake. By doing so, they’ll feel more comfortable sharing things with you.
Help your teen think things through
Teenagers may often make impulsive (冲动的) decisions. It takes time to understand that
thinking things through leads to the best outcomes. If you know your teenager is struggling with a
problem, check in to see what’s going on. 40 .

Lily and I have been best friends since primary school. We shared everything — snacks,
secrets, and even dreams of joining the school’s drama club together. But things changed when the
drama club announced auditors for the lead role in The Little Prince.
I’ve always loved acting — ever since I played a tiny rabbit in a primary school play, I’d
试卷第 12 页,共 14 页
dreamed of standing center stage with all eyes on me. This lead role, with its gentle lines about
friendship and courage, felt like it was made just for me. Lily said she wanted to try out, too, but I
could see hesitation flicker in her eyes — she’s always been shy, her voice softening to a whisper
when she has to speak in front of more than a few people. “We’ll practice together every
afternoon,” I promised, though a small, selfish part of me hoped I’d stand out more, that the role
would be mine.
The next two weeks were busy. We rehearsed lines every afternoon, but I noticed Lily was
getting better — her voice grew clearer, and her expressions more natural. On the day before
auditions, she accidentally saw my notebook full of extra practice notes. Her smile faded, and she
said quietly, “You must really want this.” I didn’t know how to reply.
Audition day arrived. I went first and gave it my all, but my hands were shaking the whole
time. When Lily walked on stage, something amazing happened. She didn’t look shy at all — she
was confident, even shining. When she finished, the judges nodded approvingly. I felt a mix of
pride and worry in my chest.
That evening, the sky turned pink as the drama teacher taped the audition results to the
noticeboard. Students crowded around at first, but soon left, chatting about who’d gotten what. I
hung back, watching Lily kick at a pebble on the ground, and wondered if we’d still be as close if
only one of us made it.

W: Well, I had a delivery of some furniture from you on the 20th of July, the day before
yesterday. The items arrived but there are some problems with them.
M: What problems do they have
答案第 2 页,共 14 页
W: First, we noticed that one end of the sofa was damp.
M: I' ve made a note of that. We' ll certainly collect the faulty one but it' ll probably be a few
weeks before we can send a replacement. And there isn't one in stock right now. Would you like to
wait
W: I think in that case, I' ll just have my money back.
M: OK. You also ordered a carpet. Is that all right
W: Well, the color isn't the same as it appears on your website. We could live with that but the
problem is that it isn't the size advertised. It's too small.
M: Actually, you may find that the carpet will settle as it gets walked on.
W: OK, I' ll leave that one for now and see what happens.
M: Again, I do apologize. Please accept a gift certificate from us as an apology. I' ll email this to
you immediately.

Now on to local news. I'm talking about the planned re-routing of traffic around the
shopping centre on the High Street. The project will run over two stages. To begin with, there'll be
a trial period. If the changes prove to be successful, stage two will be rolled out. The first stage
will run from June 1st to July 31st, with the second stage continuing until September 30th. The
traffic problem is often caused by vehicles entering the High Street from side roads. So,this is
going to mean making some roads one-way. At the north end by the railway station, drivers will
be able to join the High Street from Wood Road, which will remain unchanged. Lin Road and Mill
Road will be made one-way. Motorists will no longer be able to use Han Road, which will be
made a walker-only area. However, the project hasn't been well received by all the residents.
Cyclists are concerned that the current cycling paths will disappear. So, the council is inviting you
to email them with your suggestions.

I rushed to the noticeboard, with Lily following closely behind. My eyes scanned the list
答案第 12 页,共 14 页
quickly only to find my name wasn’t under “Lead Role”. I felt a little disappointed, but then I saw
Lily’s name there. I turned to her, and before I could say a word, she gave me a big hug. “I
couldn’t have done this without your help,” she said sincerely. Her words made my
disappointment fade away. I smiled and said, “You deserve it—your performance was really
amazing at the audition!”
A few days later, during our first rehearsal, Lily turned to me with a smile. She held out a
script and said excitedly, “The teacher said there is a supporting role that is perfect for you—it has
great lines, and we will get to act together every scene!” With my eyes growing wide in
astonishment, I took the script and had a glance, tears in my eyes. It was then that I realized true
friendship is not about winning alone—it is about cheering each other on, even when your own
dream takes a different turn.
