Scout was a large black lab mix. An accident on August 16 hurt his spine (脊柱), leaving
him unable to move his legs. His owners, Alyssa Fox and Kris Bauer, however, believed he still
had a future.
When Scout arrived at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital on August 20, his condition looked
very serious. Imaging soon revealed injuries in both his neck and lower back — an especially
dangerous combination. “He couldn’t stand at all, which typically indicates a neck injury,” said
Leanne Jankelunas, a neurology resident. “But his physical responses pointed to problems in his
lower spine. We realized we were dealing with multiple trauma sites.”
The team chose to stabilize Scout’s lower spine with titanium implants during surgery on
August 21, while avoiding surgery on his neck. Any mistake there could affect his breathing or
worsen the injury. Instead, Scout was fitted with a custom-made support device that had to be
changed weekly for eight weeks. Each change required careful teamwork. “We couldn’t fully put
Scout to sleep,” Jankelunas explained. “If that injury moved at all, it unfortunately could cause
him to pass away.”
Recovery did not depend on medicine alone. At home, Fox and Bauer rearranged their
lives, sleeping on the living room floor for two months. Every three hours, they carried Scout
outside. “We’d stand him up and repeat ‘strong legs, strong legs,’” Bauer said. They even took
him to social events, determined to keep him connected to the world.
On September 26, Fox sat in her yard and called Scout from 20 feet away. “He looked at
me, gathered himself, and walked over like it was the most natural thing in the world,” she said.
The moment, captured on video, later brought tears in the exam room.
In late October, Scout was declared “neurologically normal”. Today, he can run, climb
stairs, and play fetch again — proof of what teamwork, technology, and steady care can achieve
together.
4.Which word best describes Scout’s injuries

C.By encouraging social contact. D.By recording his progress.
7.What does Scout’s recovery ultimately prove

Cooking and sewing are no longer common parts of school education. However, at a youth
summer camp in California, these practical skills were brought back through an unusual form of
learning — one that connected young students with senior citizens. Throughout July, children
attended a four-week camp at Olive Community Services in Fullerton, a nonprofit organization
that provides programs and support for older adults.
The idea for the camp came from a teenager. Leena Albinali, a 14-year-old who lives with
her grandmother, founded the Golden Connections Club to help young people learn from older
generations while also reducing loneliness among seniors. What began as monthly shared lunches
gradually developed into a summer camp for students aged 8 to 14. During the program, seniors
taught what the Associated Press described as “lost skills”, including embroidery (刺绣), card
making, clay jewelry design, Instant Pot cooking, and fruit bouquet making.
Shameem Syed, a volunteer who helped teach several classes, said she felt both “excited”
and “very honored” by the students’ interest. “I was overwhelmed by the kindness and respect
they showed,” she said. While these skills felt simple to the seniors, Syed explained that teaching
them made older adults feel valued and needed.
Another volunteer, Sister Haqiqah Abdul-Rahim, a mother of 8 and grandmother of 16, said
the emotional connection mattered most to her. “Just being there was heartfelt,” she wrote. “It felt
like nurturing.”
试卷第 6 页,共 13 页
Beyond technical skills, the lessons also shared cultural knowledge. In cooking classes,
students encountered unfamiliar ingredients such as lemongrass, ginger, and turmeric. “Their eyes
were wide open — like, ‘Wow,’” Syed recalled.
The camp benefited both generations. One student even chose the Golden Connections
Club over another camp. Encouraged by the success, Olive Community Services is now
considering monthly programs and future camps. As Syed noted, the experience offered seniors
“hope and a purpose”, while helping ease the sense of solitude many older adults still feel — even
when surrounded by family.
8.Why was the Golden Connections Club established
A.To teach practical skills to the young. B.To organize summer camps for children.
C.To bridge generations for mutual benefit. D.To support nonprofit community services.
9.How did the camp affect the elderly
A.It made them feel respected and valued. B.It helped them learn new technical skills.
C.It allowed them to share cultural recipes. D.It reduced their family responsibilities.
10.What does the underlined word “solitude” in the last paragraph mean
A.Loneliness. B.Confusion. C.Tiredness. D.Pressure.
11.What would be a suitable title for the text
A.Lost Skills Taught at a Summer Camp. B.A Club Uniting the Young and the Old.

More shoppers are choosing Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) this holiday season. On Cyber
Monday alone, consumers financed over $1 billion in online purchases using this option, a record
according to Adobe Analytics. By the end of the season, the total is expected to reach $20.2
billion, up 11% from last year.
BNPL allows shoppers to buy goods instantly through service providers, and pay over time.
Many loans are interest-free for a limited period and require no long-term commitment. For
people with little or no credit history, BNPL can make large or unexpected purchases more
manageable. However, it also carries risks. Missed payments can be sent to debt collectors and
reported to credit bureaus (局), which may harm credit scores. A 2025 survey by a loan company
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
found that 41% of BNPL users had missed a payment in the past year.
Experts emphasize that BNPL should only be used if you can afford to repay the full
amount. Lisa Gill, an investigative reporter at Consumer Reports, warns that being approved for a
BNPL loan does not mean the lender believes you can repay it. “It’s not an indicator of your
creditworthiness. It just shows they are willing to take you on your word,” she says. Felix Aidala,
an analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, adds that using BNPL to buy something you
cannot otherwise afford is much riskier. People who rely on BNPL tend to be financially fragile,
and borrowing beyond one’s means can quickly lead to debt problems.
Even though BNPL can make payments seem smaller and more convenient, failing to plan
can have serious consequences. Automatic payments, multiple loans, and missed deadlines may
result in overdraft fees or lower credit scores. Responsible use means only borrowing what you
can repay on time, keeping track of payments, and avoiding purchases you cannot afford. Used
carefully, BNPL can help manage expenses, but misuse can quickly turn convenience into
financial trouble.
12.What is a potential risk of using BNPL services
A.It limits purchases for new shoppers B.It may damage users’ credit.
C.It charges high interest from the start. D.It requires a long-term credit commitment.
13.What do experts say about BNPL approval
A.It reflects one’s true repayment ability. B.It is recommended for large purchases
C.It encourages responsible spending habits. D.It is based on trust rather than proof.
14.What is the key to using BNPL responsibly
A.Choosing reputable lending companies. B.Making use of interest-free periods.
C.Focusing on holiday season purchases. D.Spending within one’s repayment.
15.What does the author finally suggest about BNPL use
A.It benefits those with stable incomes. B.It simplifies personal budgeting.
C.It requires strict financial discipline. D.It should replace traditional credit.

Learning how to communicate with your teens is essential to maintaining a healthy
relationship. 16 .
Lecture less, listen more
As a parent, it’s easy to fall into the routine of lecturing your teenagers. After all, you have
a lot of life experience and you want to share it with them. 17 . So find ways to actively
engage with and listen to your teens. Ask them questions like “Is there anything I can do to help
you feel better ”
Break down communication barriers
18 When it comes to communication, emotional barriers prevent teens from feeling
secure enough to talk about what’s going on in their lives. This can cause them to start lying. For
example, if you talk to your teenage daughter about changing her behaviour, don’t start the
conversation by criticizing her. Instead, empathize (产生共鸣) with her and make sure she feels
safe opening up about her emotions.
19
When something goes wrong in your teens’ life, of course you want to help. Teenagers will
make mistakes, and that’s okay! When your teens come to you to talk, resist the urge to blame or
shame them for whatever has happened. Instead, let your teenagers know that it’s okay that they
made a mistake. By doing so, they’ll feel more comfortable sharing things with you.
Help your teen think things through
Teenagers may often make impulsive (冲动的) decisions. It takes time to understand that
thinking things through leads to the best outcomes. If you know your teenager is struggling with a
problem, check in to see what’s going on. 20 .
A.Be real with your teens
B.Don’t blame or shame your teens
C.Here are some skills for you to help talk with your teens
D.Whenever possible, help your teens think through the situation
E.But studies have shown that long or angry lectures simply don’t work
F.A communication barrier will develop if you frequently blame your teens
G.Let your teens handle all problems independently so that they can grow up faster

During one of my high school summer vacations, I took on a part-time job at a clothing
store. As a newcomer in this new work environment, I was still in the process of getting familiar
with all the rules of the business. I knew that most clothes in the store were enjoying a 15%
discount, which translated to being sold at 85% of their original prices. However, because of my
inexperience and quick judgment, I wrongly believed that every single item in the store fell under
this discount kind.
One sunny day, an elderly lady with a kind look entered the store. She carefully chose two
pieces of clothing that were, in fact, at their full retail prices. It wasn’t marked on the clothing
labels that these items were not fit for a discount either. She got close to me with a questioning
look in her eyes and asked, “Young man, are these 15% off ” Without pausing to think or
double-check, I nodded eagerly and replied with a confident smile, “Yes, ma’am. They are.”
The old lady made her way to the checkout counter. But as the cashier began to ring up her
purchases, she realized that she was being charged the full price for the clothes. She raised her

voice and started expressing her dissatisfaction. “You told me these were on sale! Why am I being
charged the full amount This is unacceptable! I must insist on seeing your manager and getting a
15% discount.”
At first, when the elderly lady protested at the checkout about not getting the promised
discount, I firmly believed it was the cashier’s mistake. I even shot the cashier a blaming look,
thinking she had been wrong. But as the situation went on, I decided to ask other staff. After a
brief conversation with them, they explained the store’s discount rules. To my great
embarrassment, I then realized that it was actually my fault for misleading the customer. What
should I do

13.细节理解题。根据第三段“Lisa Gill, an investigative reporter at Consumer Reports, warns that

Responsible use means only borrowing what you can repay on
time, keeping track of payments, and avoiding purchases you cannot afford.(负责任的消费意味

负责任地使用先买后付服务的关键是在自己的还款能力范围内消费。故选 D。
15.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Automatic payments, multiple loans, and missed deadlines may
result in overdraft fees or lower credit scores. Responsible use means only borrowing what you
can repay on time, keeping track of payments, and avoiding purchases you cannot afford. Used
carefully, BNPL can help manage expenses, but misuse can quickly turn convenience into
financial trouble.(自动扣款、多笔贷款以及逾期还款都可能导致超支费用或信用评分降低。

Should we improve weak subjects or strong ones
With the college entrance examination approaching, students debate whether to improve
weak subjects or strengthen strong ones. In my opinion, we should focus on our weak subjects.
Weak subjects are the main obstacles to high total scores. Low marks in them will drag
down our overall grades, no matter how well we do in strong subjects. Moreover, it is easier to
make rapid progress in weak areas with targeted practice, which helps increase our total points
efficiently.
Thus, prioritizing weak subjects is a practical way to achieve better exam results.

47. A wave of embarrassment and guilt washed over me. I stood there, rooted to the spot,
feeling a deep sense of shame. My hands were clammy, and my heart was pounding with anxiety.
I knew I had to take responsibility for my mistake. Summoning up my courage, I walked over to
the elderly lady, my head bowed in shame. “Ma’am,” I said in a low, remorseful voice, “I made a
terrible mistake. I misinformed you about the discount. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience
caused.” I offered to pay the difference from my own pocket as a way to make amends.
The store manager, who had heard the noise, hurried over. I quickly explained the whole
situation to the manager, admitting my fault without hesitation. The manager listened attentively,
his expression serious. Then, he turned to the elderly lady and said, “Madam, we sincerely
apologize for this oversight. To make up for it, we will give you the 15% discount as our staff
promised. We value your patronage and hope this won't affect your impression of our store.” The
elderly lady's anger subsided, and she nodded in acceptance. I felt a huge weight lifted off my
shoulders, and I learned a valuable lesson about being more careful and thorough at work.
