Abstract: During the Gold Rush in the 1890s, in Canada's harsh northern wilderness,
dog teams pulled sleds (雪橇 ) for travelers searching for gold. Buck, a strong dog stolen
from his comfortable home and forced to work as a sled dog, was sold to three inexperienced
southerners-Hal, Charles, and Mercedes....
I was expected that the team would run out of dog food. But Hal, Charles, and Mercedes
actually made the shortage come sooner by over feeding at first, thus quickly reaching the
day when little food would be left. And to make things worse, when Mercedes, with tears
inner eyes, tried to persuade Hal to give the dogs even more, she secretly took food from the
fish-sacks (麻袋) and fed them. But what Buck and the huskies truly needed was not more
food, but rest. Even though they were traveling slowly, the heavy load greatly drained their
strength.
Then came the underfeeding. One day, Hal realized that his dog food was half gone, but
they had covered only a quarter of the journey. Even worse, no extra food could be bought
anywhere, So Hal cut down the dogs' food even more and tried to travel longer each day. His
sister Mercedes and brother-in-law Charles supported this idea; but they could not succeed
because of their heavy equipment and their own lack of skill. It was easy to give the dogs less food; but it was impossible to
make the dogs travel faster, and their own habit of starting late in the morning stopped them from traveling longer hours. They
not only did not know how to manage dogs, but they did not know how to manage themselves.
The first dog Io die was Dub. It is well known in the North that a southern dog will starve to death on a husky's normal
food amount. So the six Outside dogs that joined Buck's team soon began to die on half that amount.
An excerpt from Jack London's The Call of the Wild, abridged and adapted
14. What directly caused the dog food to run out so early

A. Totally exhausted. B. Partly recovered. C. Completely renewed. D. Slightly increased.
16. Which of the following words can best describe the three southerners
A. Energetic and responsible. B. Immature and unreliable.
C. Ambitious and appreciative. D. Inexperienced and dishonest.
17. What lesson can we learn from the text

Collecting solar energy in space, a concept once limited to science fiction, is now becoming a possible ambition for
several pioneering companies.
A recent test by Star Catcher, a hi-tech company, sending 100 watts of power over 105 meters at an American football
stadium by harvesting light from the sun and transmitting it to a screen, offered a clear glimpse into this future. This
experiment is part of a broader effort into Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP), a technology that captures sunlight in space
to provide Earth with abundant clean energy.
Its core advantage lies in overcoming earth-based limitations: while earth system loses up to 55% of potential energy
to air blocks, weather, and the day-night cycle, space systems operate almost continuously with over 10times the collection
efficiency. This huge potential has attracted global interest, with nations like the US and China making significant
investments. The technology's principle is straightforward: satellites turn sunlight to electricity and send it via focused
microwaves to ground-based receivers.
And yet, achieving it is not easy. One concern is the challenge of launching and operating a substantial number of
satellites in space, something never attempted on the extremely large scale proposed by space-based solar firms. Plus, such
enormous satellites construction may not even be legal. Under the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, no country is allowed to
claim ownership of any parts of Earth orbit. Moreover, there are less expensive and simpler forms of renewable energy that
could become operational at a much quicker pace.
Obviously, creating a Space-Based Solar Power system would require addressing several significant capability gaps.
Researchers would need to find ways to fix and maintain large systems in orbit, enable those systems to operate
autonomously, and develop efficient power-transmitting to bring the harvested energy to Earth. "We're certainly in a better
spot than we were 30 years ago," says Charity Weeden, a former Nasa Associate Administrator for technology, policy and
strategy, and a space policy expert. "But are we truly ready to start "
18. How does the author introduce the concept of SBSP
A. By listing famous companies. B. By mentioning its fictional origin.
C. By illustrating an exploratory test. D. By showing advantages of renewables.
19. What is the key strength of SBSP
A. Receiving wide political and policy support. B. Drawing large-scale investments worldwide.
C. Using satellites for power transmission in space. D. Achieving higher energy collection efficiency gain.
20. Why is it hard to put SBSP into practice
A. Limited amount of sunlight. B. illegal ownership of technology.
C. Low cost of alternative energy. D. Small number of solar companies.
21. What is the best title of this text
A. Renewable Energy: Going for Sustainability.
B. Solar Satellites: Hope for Global Energy Crisis.
C. A Space Challenge: Legal and Technical problems.
D. Space-Based Solar Power. Bridging Dreams and Reality.

Banning phones in schools has emerged as a popular policy worldwide, with the aim of helping students focus. While
political support for phone-free classrooms is growing, scientific evidence for its benefits has historically been thin, with
early small-scale studies presenting mixed results.
However, a new large-scale study from developing countries now offers strong causal evidence. In the study, nearly
17,000 students were randomly assigned to classrooms where they did or did not have to give up their mobile phones. The
results showed that phone-free students performed better academically. The increase was greatest among first-year,
low-performing students studying subjects outside of science and maths. Although the average grade improvement was
statistically small, its effect is comparable to "replacing a poor teacher with a very good one" for a term. For these
struggling students, such a modest difference could mean passing instead of failing.
Despite these clear findings, the study will not end the argument. The research was limited. To developing countries, so
cultural differences may make the results less applicable elsewhere. More importantly, this study lines up with some earlier
work in other countries which also found that phone bans led to academic gains, particularly for economically
disadvantaged and low-achieving students. This suggests a consistent pattern: those who struggle most seem to benefit
most from a phone-free environment.
The biggest challenge, however, may come from other devices. Even if banning phones becomes a universal policy,
there are still tablets and laptops. These are often intended as aids to classroom instruction but offer many of the same
temptations for distraction. For instance, a study of a phone ban in Swedish secondary schools found no effect on student
performance. The researchers believe this is because digital technology is highly integrated into Swedish education,
allowing students to simply switch to other devices for so-called "cyberslacking", using technology for non-class-related
activities. This finding suggests that in a highly digitalized learning environment, simply banning phones might be
ineffective.
22. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Early studies are not scientific. B. Phone bans' benefits lack strong evidence.
C. Students focus better without phones D. Phone-free learning is widely welcomed.
23. What is a key finding in the study in developing countries
A. Science classes were unaffected. B. The ban had no effect on grades.
C. Better teachers caused the results. D. Weaker students gained the most.
24. Why does the author mention the study in Sweden
A. To suggest a more effective solution. B. To praise Sweden's education system.
C. To question the former study's results. D. To highlight a policy's potential limits.
25. What can be concluded from the text
A. Learning should be digitalized. B. Phone bans improve performance.
C. Digital distractions vary by context. D. Integration of devices is recommended.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I grew up in a family that loved outdoor adventures. My parents often took me on short hikes or camping trips at
weekends. As a child, I learned some basic outdoor skills from them. Dad taught me how to read maps and gave me seme
safety tips He even put a small satellite phone in my bag in case of emergencies. Mom showed me how to notice small
things in nature, like flowers and bird sounds, and asked me to draw them in her notebook. These little trips made me want
to explore more. So when I was in Grade 3, we went on a cross-country trip - the most unforgettable journey of my life.
Every day on the road, Dad used his map to show us where to go. He marked beautiful places and rest stops with a
red pen so we wouldn't get lost. Mom, who always brought joy to our family, took out her sketchbook and drew mountains
with snow, rivers that turned and twisted and colorful villages. She also told us folk stories that made those places feel real.
We travelled through many different places--from green forests in the north to hot deserts in the west. Each night after
driving, we sat around the campfire and shared our thoughts and feelings. We called it our "Family Reflection Time”.
One day, we decided to walk on a quiet path in the Grand Canyon. I ran ahead looking at small animals and admiring
the red rock layers. Dad stopped to take photos of faraway mountains, and Mom sat down to draw a wild flower. They told
me to go slowly and stay where they could see me.
But I was so interested in everything around me that I kept walking without noticing I was getting farther away Soon,
the path became very narrow and dangerous. The rocks were wet and close to a steep cliff (悬崖) one wrong step could
make me fall. Suddenly, my foot slipped on a loose stone. I lost my balance, waved my arms in the air, and quickly
grabbed a bush to hold on. My legs started shaking, and tears filled my eyes. My heart pounded as I screamed for help,
hoping my parents would hear me.

"Dad! Mom!" I called out, my voice cracking with fear. The wind whistled past my ears, drowning my cries. For a
terrifying moment, I thought they hadn't heard me. But then, I saw Dad's figure appear at the bend of the path, his face pale
with worry. Mom was right behind him, her sketchbook forgotten. "Stay still! Don't move!" Dad shouted, his voice firm
but shaking. He carefully made his way toward me, step by step, while Mom stood frozen, her hands covering her mouth.
When Dad finally reached me and pulled me safely back onto solid ground, I burst into tears in his arms. Mom rushed over
and wrapped us both in a tight hug, whispering, "You're safe. You're safe."
That night, we gathered for our "Family Reflection Time" as usual. The campfire crackled softly, casting warm
shadows on our faces. For a long moment, no one spoke. Then Dad broke the silence. "I'm proud of how you stayed calm
and held on," he said gently. Mom added, "But we also learned something today—no adventure is worth risking safety." I
nodded, still shaken but grateful. I told them how scared I had been, and how their quick response had saved me. We sat
quietly for a while, listening to the night. That night, I didn't just learn about nature—I learned how much my parents
loved me, and how important it is to stay close, even when curiosity calls.
