[典例1] (2025·全国一卷阅读B)As a new unit started, I asked everyone to write a persuasive piece on a health-related topic of their choice. This time they found the exercise much more interesting. For the next two assignments, a personal-narrative unit followed by a creative-writing workshop, I only required that the piece meet the specifications of its genre (体裁) and that it contain a thesis. The results were staggering. The students took on diverse topics and turned in stories, 10 to 20 pages each, with characters that broadened my view and touched my heart.
26.What does the underlined word “staggering” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Mixed. B.Amazing.
C.Similar. D.Disturbing.

[典例2] (2024·全国甲卷阅读B)Dogs are known for their impressive fetching habit, but cats take_this_behavior_up_a_notch. Many cats will find random objects outside and bring them to their owners. This is a very old habit that's been present in all kinds of predators Cats bring gifts for their owners to show they love you. These adorable little hunters are just doing something that it's been in their nature since the beginning of time. So just go along with it!
26.Which best explains the phrase “take...up a notch” in Paragraph 3
A.Perform appropriately. B.Move faster.
C.Act strangely. D.Do better.

[典例3] (2022·新高考Ⅰ卷阅读C)“It's good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I'm enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.”
There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide.
Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark_on the project, said:“Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.”
30.What do the underlined words “embark on” mean in Paragraph 7
A.Improve. B.Oppose.
C.Begin. D.Evaluate.
[解题思路] “one of the first to embark on the project”是主语Wendy Wilson的同位语,根据embark on前面的“one of the first”及其后面的“Residents really welcome the idea of...to people here.”

[典例4] (2023·新课标Ⅰ卷阅读C)To do so,I divided the book into two parts. In part one,I describe the philosophical foundations of digital minimalism, starting with an examination of the forces that are making so many people's digital lives increasingly intolerable, before moving on to a detailed discussion of the digital minimalism philosophy.
Part one concludes by introducing my suggested method for adopting this philosophy:the digital declutter. This process requires you to step away from optional online activities for thirty days. At the end of the thirty days, you will then add back a small number of carefully chosen online activities that you believe will provide massive benefits to the things you value.
29.What does the underlined word “declutter” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Clear-up. B.Add-on.
C.Check-in. D.Take-over.

(2025·南昌高三下学期信息卷)I made a wrong decision because of my strong desire to get attention. As humans, our longing for recognition can sometimes lead us lost, forcing us to make regrettable decisions. My name is Vimukthi and at 15 years old, I shone academically yet longed for popularity among my classmates. Despite my achievements, I felt overshadowed and unnoticed. The desire to stand out consumed me, pushing me towards a severe mistake.
One day, during a visit to the IT lab with my friends, our teacher mentioned missing computer parts. Curious glances exchanged, everyone wondered aloud how it could happen in a locked lab. “It' s possible to open that lock with another key,” I said carefully, seeking attention from my classmates. Instantly, eyes turned to me with newfound interest and curiosity. It was a rush I had never experienced before—a taste of the attention I desired so desperately. In my eagerness to maintain their fascination, I demonstrated how to open the lock, taking great pleasure in the spotlight.
The following day, summoned (传唤) to the principal's office, I found myself accused of stealing the missing parts. Shock and disbelief seized me as I faced an accusation I never anticipated.
“I didn't do it, sir,” I begged, but suspicion clouded the principal's eyes. His repeated questioning intensified, pushing me to the brink (边缘) of tears and fear. In a desperate attempt to end the suffering, I falsely admitted, hoping to escape the mounting pressure.
Admitting guilt only temporarily alleviated the principal's anger. He summoned my father, and my father listened attentively, and then spoke with quiet authority: “I trust my son. He is not a thief.” Before meeting the principal, my father gently asked if I understood the gravity of my actions. Tearfully, I acknowledged my misguided search for attention. “Son, attention cannot be forced,” my father reminded me. “True recognition comes from honorable behavior, not a cheat. Never again compromise your integrity for attention, and never admit to something you didn't do.” His words resonated deeply, shaping my understanding of integrity and truth.

(2025·皖北协作区联考)According to a new study, climate change will change and reduce the land suitable for growing food and wood, putting the production of these two important resources into direct competition.
The sight of vineyards (葡萄园) in Britain is becoming more common as hotter summers create increasingly suitable conditions for growing grapes. But behind this success story is an acute one: Climate change is moving the regions of the world suitable for growing crops.
Researchers at the University of Cambridge have uncovered a looming (迫在眉睫的) issue: As the land suitable for producing our food moves northwards, it will put pressure on the land we need to grow trees. The wood these trees produce is the basis of much of modern life—from paper and cardboard to furniture and buildings.
They say that the increasing competition between land for wood production and food production due to climate change has, until now, been ignored, but is set to be an emerging issue as our demand for both continues to increase.
Under the worst-case scenario (可能的情况) for climate change, where no action is taken to reduce carbon emissions in society, the study found that over a quarter of existing forestry land will become more suitable for farming by the end of the century.
“There's only a limited area of suitable land on the planet where we can produce food and wood—two critical resources for society. As climate change worsens and farming is forced to expand northwards, there's going to be increasing pressure on wood production,” said a researcher in the University of Cambridge's Department of Plant Sciences.
“We've got to be-thinking fifty years ahead because if we want wood in the future, we need to be planting it now. The trees that will be cut down by the end of this century are already in the ground—they're on much slower cycles than food crops,” the researcher added.

6.What is a new issue arising from climate change
A.The overproduction of wood.
B.Loss of biodiversity and habitats.
C.A decrease in global food demand.
D.Agriculture and forestry battle for land.
