Ada Lovelace, born on December 10th, 1815, was the daughter of the famous poet George Gordon Byron.
When Lovelace was young, at her mother’s insistence, tutors taught her mathematics and science. Women of that
time were seldom exposed to such intellectually demanding studies, but her mother believed engaging in these
studies would prevent Lovelace from developing her father’s moody and unpredictable personality. Lovelace was
also forced to lie still for extended periods of time because her mother believed it would help her develop
self-control.
Around the age of 17, Ada met Charles Babbage, a mathematician and inventor. They became friends, and the
much older Babbage served as a mentor to Lovelace. Through Babbage, Lovelace began studying advanced
mathematics with Professor Augustus de Morgan at the University of London.
Known as“the father of the computer”, Babbage invented the analytical engine, an early design for a computer.
Lovelace was later asked to translate an article on Babbage’s analytical engine. She not only translated the original
French text into English but also added her own thoughts and ideas on the machine. Her notes ended up being three
times longer than the original article. Her work was published in 1843 in an English science journal.
In her notes, Lovelace described how codes could be created for the device to handle letters and symbols along
with numbers. She also theorized a method for the engine to repeat a series of instructions, a process that computer
programs use today. Lovelace also put forward other forward-thinking ideas in the article. For her work, Lovelace
is considered to be the first computer programmer.
Lovelace died on November 27th, 1852, and her contributions to the field of computer science weren’t
discovered until the 1950s. Her notes were reintroduced to the world in 1953. Since then, Ada has received many
honors for her work. In 1980, the US named a newly developed computer language “Ada”, after Lovelace.
4. What is paragraph 1 mainly about
A. Lovelace’s resistance to her strict mother. B. The unusual way Lovelace was brought up.
C. Lovelace’s talent for mathematics and science. D. The relationship between Lovelace and her parents.
5. What does the word “mentor” underlined in paragraph 2 mean
A. A financial supporter who funded Lovelace’s research.
B. A formal teacher who was paid to give Lovelace lessons.
C. A wise helper who guided Lovelace’s learning and growth.
D. A close friend who shared personal interests with Lovelace.
6. What can be inferred about Lovelace’s notes from paragraph 3
A. They were a simplified version for the public.
B. They were considered too long by later scholars.
C. They focused primarily on criticizing the original article.
D. They included ideas extending beyond the original article.
7. Why is Lovelace honored as the first computer programmer
A. Because she built Babbage’s analytical engine.
B. Because she created the first working computer.
C. Because she introduced key programming concepts.
D. Because she made computer science a discipline.

Rainforest seedlings are more likely to survive in natural forests than in places where logging has happened,
even if tree restoration projects have taken place, according to a new study. Scientists monitored over 5,000
seedlings for a year and a half in North Borneo. They studied a region containing both natural forests and areas
logged 30 years ago — some of which were recovering naturally, while the others had been restored by methods
including tree planting.
At first, both natural forests and restored forests had similarly high numbers of seedlings, compared to
naturally recovering forests, suggesting that restoration activities enhanced the reproduction of trees. However, by
the end of the study, similarly low numbers of seedlings remained in restored and naturally recovering forests,
while seedling populations were higher in natural forests.
“Our findings suggest that seedlings are experiencing stress in logged forests,” said Dr. David Bartholomew,
based at the University of Exeter during the study. “This could be due to changes to the canopy (树冠) structure,
microclimate, and soil, with current restoration treatments insufficient to remove this stress.”
The study observed differences in traits of the plants in logged areas compared to natural forests, showing that
some species might be struggling to survive in disturbed areas, and that some had to adjust their growth to
accommodate. This could lead to differences in biodiversity and ecological functioning in the long term.
Together, the results show that regeneration may be challenged by different factors depending on the
restoration approach. In naturally recovering sites, there might not be enough seeds from nearby trees to spread into
the damaged area, so few seedlings can start growing. In sites where planted trees have matured, many of the young
seedlings didn’t survive. So the study highlights the importance of carefully designing, monitoring, and adaptively
managing restoration projects intended to restore degraded landscapes.
8. What is the purpose of the new study
A. To prove that forest restoration is necessary.
B. To measure the growth rate of trees in rainforests.
C. To study seedling survival in different environments.
D. To compare soil quality in natural and restored forests.
9. What did the researchers find about the restored forests
A. Seedlings showed the fastest growth in these areas.
B. The number of seedlings increased steadily over time.
C. They significantly increased the diversity of tree species.
D. They failed to enable the full establishment of seedlings.
10. What does Bartholomew intend to explain in paragraph 3
A. Why the results occurred. B. The species most likely to survive.
C How the study was conducted. D. The methods used to restore forests.
11 What challenges the tree production in naturally recovering forests
A. Soil nutrients. B. Tree monitoring techniques.
C. Seed availability. D. Competition from other species.

Is it possible to forget your native language — for example, if you move to another region or country and
start speaking a different language
Research shows that it’s possible in certain circumstances, particularly for young children. The phenomenon is
called “native language attrition (母语磨蚀)”. For instance, a 2003 study found that at age 30, children who were
born in Korea but adopted by French families between the ages of 3 and 8 were no better at understanding Korean
than native French speakers who had never been exposed to the language.
However, the older a person is when they move, the more likely they are to retain their native language
because they have established a strong linguistic foundation, according to Laura Dominguez, a linguistics professor
at the University of Southampton. Indeed, recent research suggests that people are less likely to experience native
language attrition after hitting adolescence (青春期). This is probably because beyond this stage, our brains mature
and become less plastic and receptive to change.
The extent of native language attrition also varies across language components. Dominguez notes that
vocabulary is the most vulnerable (易受影响的) aspect of one’s native language, even after short periods of disuse.
However, this does not imply complete forgetting. Rather, it just takes the brain a bit longer to recall some words.
Once people fully immerse themselves again in their native language, they’ll get quicker at doing this. By contrast,
Dominguez and colleagues find that Spanish native speakers who speak English as a second language do not
change the way they use the present tense in Spanish, which differs from that in English, even after living in the
UK for more than 15 years.
Research also suggests that a similar principle applies to forgetting a second language that has not been used,
depending on the extent and duration of prior learning. These findings highlight the dynamic nature of language
retention and recovery.
12. Why is the 2003 study mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To prove that language attrition can be prevented.
B. To prove that people can forget their mother tongue.
C. To show that children adapt to new environments easily.
D. To show that a critical period exists for language learning.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly explain
A. It is easier for adults to master a new language.
B. Early migration harms children’s learning ability.
C. Age is a major factor affecting native language attrition.
D. Native language attrition changes people’s brain structure.
14. What does the text say about grammar compared to vocabulary
A. It is more resistant to being forgotten. B. It takes the brain a longer time to recover.
C. It can only be regained through formal study. D. It is forgotten completely after years of disuse.
15. What is this text about
A. Strategies to retain people’s native language.
B. How and why people lose their mother tongue.
C. Impact of migration on native language attrition.
D. How and why language learning is affected by age.

Illness had ruined my body, leaving me tired and weak. For weeks, I barely left my bed, letting the sunlight
fade unnoticed through the window. Messages and calls from friends came almost every day, but I couldn’t bring
myself to respond. Every time my phone buzzed (发出嗡嗡声), a sense of guilt and helplessness washed over me
— I felt I had nothing worth sharing in the sorry state I was in.
Time passed slowly in the quiet room, and everything seemed indistinct. I found comfort only in small,
ordinary things: the gentle sound of the heater, the smell of the tea, and the pages of the book I could barely focus
on. Yet even these small comforts felt hollow. They made me realize the energy and laughter I had lost.
Occasionally, I would find myself staring blankly at the photo of my friends on the table, a strong sense of longing
welling up inside me. I missed them — missed the sound of their voices and the warmth they brought — but
shame and weakness kept me from seeking help.
Then, one morning, the doorbell rang. I slowly raised my head, feeling heavy-hearted, and dragged my feet to
the door. There it was: a flower delivery. I brought the flowers inside and set them on the table. Looking at the
bright colors, I couldn’t help but feel curious. Instead of returning to bed, I felt a pull on my heart, a desire to
uncover the story behind these flowers. My fingers trembled as I dialed the flower shop, and a gentle voice
answered the phone, telling me that some of my friends had sent this surprise. “They wanted to send you a
message,” he said, “through the language of flowers.”
The flowers were unlike anything I had expected. Each flower seemed to carry a piece of emotion from my
friends’ hearts — concern, admiration, hope and care. For the first time in weeks, a glimmer (一丝) of warmth ran
through me, as if the flowers had spoken before I even understood their words.

I decided to call my friends one by one, starting with Lina who had always been the most caring. As the phone
rang, my heart beat fast with a mix of nervousness and excitement. When Lina’s warm voice came through, I could
hardly hold back my tears, apologizing for ignoring them these weeks. To my surprise, she didn’t blame me at all,
but kept comforting me, saying they all missed me and were waiting for my recovery. Her words, full of sincerity,
melted my shame and helplessness. One by one, I talked to each friend, feeling the heavy burden in my heart lifting
little by little.
I placed the beautiful flowers in a visible spot in my room. Every morning when I woke up, the bright colors
greeted me, reminding me of my friends’ love and care. With their encouragement, I began to try harder to get
better: I got out of bed to sit by the window, breathed in the fresh air, and even tried to read my book carefully. The
flowers, like a ray of light, drove away the darkness in my heart. I finally realized that true friendship means being
brave enough to ask for help and accept love. Gradually, I regained my energy, looking forward to the day I could
meet my dear friends again.
