广东省深圳市2026年中考英语专题训练:04阅读单选(4题)
The taste and smell of a certain food can often bring back memories. Do you have any favourite food memories
Mine start with my mother. She can do magic in the kitchen: Tofu and beef become red, hot mapo tofu; carrots and mutton become lovely dumplings, a big fat hen becomes a pot of warm chicken soup; even eggs and green onions become wonderful pancakes. I always grow hungry thinking of them!
But my favourite food is porridge (粥). I often wake up to the smell of porridge. Sometimes, it’s sweet eight-treasure porridge. Other times, it’s porridge with pork and thousand-year-old eggs. Each kind of porridge tastes great in its own way. When I fall ill, my mother always makes plain rice porridge for me. That’s the simplest food on any Chinese menu. For me, however, it's the best food in the world. And it’s better medicine than a pill!
Now I’m studying away from home. But all the warm memories stay with me. The old days still feel so sweet in my heart. What food remains strong in your memory

Some people see oysters (牡蛎) as delicious food. But some raise (养殖) oysters to clean up the polluted seawater. Amy, a 15-year-old girl, is one of them. She has won a master oyster gardener prize (牡蛎养殖能手奖) this year. She thinks oysters are really helpful. They are environmental stars.
“I knew nothing about oyster gardening when I started in 2022. I learned all of this after I completed a free course about it. The course is about raising oysters in cages (笼子).”Amy says.
There used to be lots of oysters in coastal waters (沿海海域). But their numbers have diminished. This is mainly because of some natural disasters (灾难). Oyster gardening is a way to help. “Anyone can join,” an oyster gardening researcher Liz Black says.
“You don’t have to do a lot to take care of your oysters, but the influence they have on the environment is huge.” Amy says.
During the oyster gardening season, Amy and her mom go to the beach. There Amy has nine cages. “Once a week I go out there,” she says. She pulls the cages from the water to check conditions of the oysters.
This spring, Amy’s oysters will be big enough to be collected. Amy will go with Liz to pick them up. Oysters that are collected will then be “planted” on the reefs (礁). So far, Amy has raised more than 1, 500 oysters. She’s a great leader of oyster gardening and a great supporter, too.

In a quiet corner of a busy city street in Brooklyn, New York, there is a special fridge. It’s not in a kitchen or a supermarket. It stands on the sidewalk, open for everyone 24 hours a day. It is a “community fridge,” and its rule is simple: “Take what you need, leave what you can.”
The idea started during a difficult time when many people lost their jobs and had trouble buying enough food. A group of neighbors decided to do something to help. They put a second-hand fridge outside and filled it with fresh vegetables, fruit, milk, and bread. Anyone who was hungry could come and take food for free, without having to ask or feel shy.
Local restaurants, bakeries, and families also help. Instead of throwing away good food that they don’t sell or eat, they put it in the community fridge. This not only helps people who are in need but also reduces food waste. It’s a win-win idea.
The community fridge has done more than just provide food. It has brought the community closer. People meet each other at the fridge. Some come to give food, others come to take it. They stop and talk, sharing stories and smiles. A volunteer (志愿者) said, “It’s not just about food. It’s about being good neighbors and taking care of each other.” The project has been so successful that hundreds of similar community fridges have appeared in cities all over the world.
