When my best friend, Gary Wilkerson Jr., told me he wanted to hike from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific
Crest Trail, my first response was, “Can I film you ”
Gary and I met years ago in a community college theatre. He was a TV writer and probably the least outdoorsy
person I knew. So, when he suggested living in the wilderness for six months, hiking 2,600 miles, I was on board. I
was eager to see how someone who had never camped a night outdoors before would reach such an outlandish
goal.
In preparation for our hike, I focused on putting together the best technical system for capturing the journey. I
had to carry everything I needed to survive — plus all the camera equipment.
I thought I could keep the camera in a pouch (小袋) on my backpack and take it out when needed. But I soon
realized I needed the camera ready at all times. When an interesting moment arose, I had only seconds to capture it.
So I took the camera out of my backpack and kept it in my hand.
In my regular life, I worked as a lighting technician in films, so lighting was of great importance to me. But on
the trail, I had no lights, except for a headlamp. Filming without lights was a major challenge, but I tried to make
the best of natural light. I positioned myself and the camera so that the light matched the mood of the scene.
Sometimes, I placed Gary between me and the sun, and other times, I used the bright sun to intensify (强化) that
feeling.
However, the biggest lesson I learned was about trust. Filming was not easy, and Gary and others trusted me
to tell their stories. If someone was uncomfortable, I learned to listen and give them the space they needed. When
tough moments came, I wanted my subjects to trust that I cared about them more than the film.
What does the underlined word “outlandish” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Effortless. B. Unusual. C. Satisfying. D. Reasonable.
Why did the author take the camera out of her backpack
A. The camera was too large to fit. B. She found it hard to climb a mountain.
C. The camera tended to be damaged. D. She needed to take photos at any time.
What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Why the author preferred natural light. B. When the author started to make films.
C. How the author dealt with film lighting. D. How the author survived in bad weather.
What does the author think is more important for filming a documentary
A. Building trust with the subjects of the film.
B. Selecting expensive camera equipment.
C. Intensifying the natural feeling of an actor.
D. Working with skilled lighting technicians.

Scientists have discovered that dogs appear to experience a range of complex emotions, such as envy (妒忌)
and pride. This type of behavior had only been shown in humans or chimpanzees, but researchers believed that
other species that live together could also care about fairness, which led them to study dogs.
“We are learning that dogs, horses, and perhaps many other species are far more emotionally complex than we
ever realized,” said Paul Morris, a professor at the University of Portsmouth who studies animal emotions. “They
can suffer simple forms of complex emotions we once thought only primates (灵长类) could experience.”
Scientists noted that dogs don’t like seeing their owners show affection to other dogs and that they can also
become stressed when a new baby or partner enters their home.
To test these ideas, Friederike Range and her team at the University of Vienna in Austria carried out an
experiment with 33 trained dogs in a lab. The dogs were asked to offer a paw (爪子) to a human. The dogs
performed the trick almost every time, whether they were given a reward or not, both when alone and with another
dog.
However, the dogs’ behavior changed when they saw other dogs getting rewards while they received nothing.
In these cases, the dogs were less eager to perform the trick. They also showed signs of stress, such as licking or
scratching.
“They are clearly unhappy with the unfair situation,” Range said. She believed that dogs might be sensitive to
other types of unfairness, like receiving less attention or praise. “It might explain why some dogs react with ‘new
baby envy’ when their owners have a child,” she added.
What is a misunderstanding of complex emotions according to the text
A. They were difficult to explore in a lab. B. They were only seen in horses.
C. They were seldom studied by scientists. D. They were limited to primates.
Why did Range’s team carry out the experiment
A. To see if dogs react to unfair situations. B. To determine if dogs can feel proud.
C. To test how dogs perform a given task. D. To study dogs’ affection to strangers.
How did the dogs behave when seeing others getting treats while they did not
A. They were eager to perform. B. They stopped to finish a task.
C. They probably felt stressed. D. They showed nothing strange.
Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Dogs Need More Attention B. Dogs Can Sense Fair Play
C. Dogs Have a Sense of Safety D. Dogs Are Happier at Home
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

A recent study shows how inactive American children become once they hit the teen years: While 90 percent
of 9-year-olds get two or more hours of exercise most days, fewer than 3 percent of 15-year-olds do. What’s more,
the study suggests that fewer than a third of those teens get even the minimum of 15 minutes of exercise, like
cycling, walking, swimming or jogging.
The study, which lasted seven years, tracked about 1,000 U.S. children at various ages. Activity levels were
measured using a special device to record movement. The researchers tracked the children’s activity levels starting
at age 9, over the school week and on weekends. Activity levels dropped in activity, but nothing of this magnitude
(程度). “As children grow up, you would expect somewhat of a drop in activity, but nothing of this magnitude (程
度),” said James Griffin, science officer for the study. He noted that the study coincided (契合) with the rise in
popularity of video games and Internet use, which draw children indoors and put them in front of a computer.
Griffin said the results send a message to parents that it’s important to teach their kids to balance computer
time with more active pursuits, like walking the dog or playing sports.
Mary Lee, 13, from Cleveland, Ohio, said she spends more time on the computer now than she did a few years
ago, particularly with online social networking sites. She also didn’t have PE class every day, last year, and will
only have it for half the upcoming school year in eighth grade.
What does the recent study suggest
A. Kids’ exercise levels drop with age.
B. A third of girls exercise for two hours.
C. 96% of U.S. teens exercise every day.
D. Physical activity increases in adulthood.
What do we know about the study from paragraph 2
A. It aimed to design a new workout system.
B. Data collection was a lengthy process.
C. It tracked 1,000 senior high school students.
D. The findings were only to be expected.
What percentage of kids were still active on weekends by age 15, according to the study
A. About 15%.
B. About 17%.
C. 33%.
D. 50%.
What can be inferred from Mary Lee’s words
A. She hates attending PE class.
B. Exercise is attractive to students.
C. She gets tired of social media.
D. The results of the study ring true.

It was a very depressing day. I didn’t get any sleep. I felt very tired and completely broken inside. I had no
idea what my future held.
I was studying in a small city in Russia and wanted to be a doctor. But because of my financial (财务的)
situation, I had to return home to Sri Lanka.
In the morning, I set out for Moscow to catch the flight. My finance was limited, so I took a regular bus. The
journey was slow, and heavy traffic delayed (耽搁) me. By the time I reached the city, I could hardly breathe from
worry.
I hurried toward the underground station, planning to take a train and then a taxi to the airport. Everything felt
heavy. The noise, the crowds, the weight of my bags, and even the air seemed to press against me.
Then the worst thing happened. As I ran toward the train, the police stopped me. They checked my visa and
passport. My delay grew longer. Fortunately, they let me go because my documents were in order. I traveled alone,
carrying all my heavy luggage. I cried my heart out. All I wanted was to be back home.
When I arrived at the airport, things got even worse. The flight gate was closed. I was alone, tired and broke. It
was also the last day of my visa. I stood at the counter, tears running down my face.
“You can take the plane tomorrow, Miss. But you have to pay one hundred dollars,” the staff lady said.
I didn’t have that money. For me, it was a huge amount. I wanted to be strong and face the moment, but I just
couldn’t. I broke down and cried uncontrollably. I thought of my parents and what would happen to them if I were
sent to jail (监狱) without a visa.
Suddenly, I heard a strange, deep voice — “Don’t cry.”

【答案】One possible version:
I looked up and saw a tall man standing in front of me. He was calm and had a warm look in his eyes. Without
hesitation, he asked, “What’s going on How can I help you ” I explained my situation, telling him about the flight,
the fee I couldn’t pay, and my fear of being stuck here without a visa. He listened quietly, then reached into his
pocket and handed me two hundred-dollar bills.” This should cover it. Don’t worry. You’ll be able to go home,” he
said. I was too shocked to speak at first, but his kindness was overwhelming.
After saying thank you, I took the man’s postal address. I wanted to send him a letter of gratitude once I was
home, but at that moment, all I could do was thank him repeatedly. I made a mental note to never forget what he
did for me. As I left the counter and walked toward the gate, I couldn’t help but feel that this simple act of kindness
had made all the difference. I realized that in a world filled with struggles, there are people who will step in to help,
making life a little bit brighter.高一英语

D
