Sara looked at him sadly. “Ralph Crewe,” she said. “He died in India from a fever, two years ago.”

One day, Dr. Zhang Yan from Peking University walked into a middle school. This term, she took on a new job—teaching science to the students here.
Dr. Zhang wore jeans and a T-shirt, drank milk tea, and spoke in both Chinese and English. She wanted to tell students that scientists aren’t always boring or serious. They have interests and balanced (平衡的) lives. They’re smart and have emotional intelligence (情商).
She also explained, “For scientists, success in science doesn’t come just from hard work. They might spend years with few successes, and that’s the first challenge scientists should face—learning to face disappointment.”
Dr. Zhang gave them lessons and taught them to do simple scientific experiments (实验). She helped them to develop habits of thinking and questioning. “The earlier they learn, the better. Some of them will go to high school in a couple of years, and they’ll choose a university in the future. Learning about science jobs early will help them make better choices later,” Zhang mentioned.

As students, we spend a lot of time reading. But how well can we remember what we’ve read
There are many ways to memorize information. Do you read information in your head Do you read it aloud Do you take notes, or just ask someone to test you We usually choose the best way for us.
Previous studies showed that reading information aloud helped people remember it better than reading it in their heads. However, the researchers of those studies paid attention to how well people could remember information, but not how well they could understand it. Later, researchers in Canada and Australia wanted to find out whether reading aloud had an effect (影响) on comprehension (理解力).
The researchers invited some people to do the new research. Those people got passages to read. They read some aloud, and read some in their heads. After reading each passage, they had to answer a few questions. Some questions tested their memory, and some tested their understanding of the passage.
The research team found that reading aloud improved memory. However, it didn’t improve people’s comprehension of the passage. Brady Roberts, one of the researchers, said, “Being able to remember information doesn’t mean you’ll understand it better.” He added, “Reading your shopping list aloud can help you buy the right things, but it’s not necessary to read difficult passages or textbooks aloud.”
32.The writer develops the 2nd paragraph by asking questions.
33.The underlined word “Previous” probably means “Past”.
34.Brady Roberts doesn’t think that reading aloud can help people remember things well.
35.The main idea of the passage is that reading aloud doesn’t help comprehension.

Giving Clear Directions: A Helpful Skill
Knowing how to give good directions is useful in everyday life. You may need to tell a friend how to come to your home, or help someone find a library or a park. But just knowing the way is not enough—you must explain it clearly. 36
Use Landmarks to Guide People
37 Instead, tell them to go from one easy-to-see place to another, like from a bank to a post office. This helps people follow the way and know they are still correct
Draw a Map If Needed
Sometimes words are not enough. If it is hard to explain, try drawing a map. 38 You can add important places like a supermarket, a school, or a traffic light. A map is also easy to keep and remember. 39
You might know a very short way, but it could be confusing for others. It is often better to give the easiest way, not the shortest. Even if it is a little longer, it is easier to follow clear landmarks. Usually, the easiest way has fewer turns and more straight roads.
Giving clear directions is an important skill. You need to know the place well. 40
A.Speak clearly and slowly.
B.Keep it simple, not short.
C.Here are some ways to help you.
D.How clearly you explain also makes a big difference.
E.A map helps the person see the way in their mind.
F.First, do not tell the whole way from start to end at once.

Clear out the mess
Have you heard of the saying “Tidy space, tidy mind” Summer vacation is coming. It’s time to clear out all the things you don’t need anymore. As well as freeing up space, it clears your mind.
Maybe you’ve been given new clothes, toys or books for some special reason and haven’t yet found a place to store them. When you spend time indoors taking things out to use or play with, your bedroom gets messy.
“Clearing out the things you don’t want or use anymore makes you feel good. Messy environment can take your attention away from things you need to focus on.” said Dr. Roberts, a psychologist. When your room is clean and tidy, you don’t need to spend ages searching for missing socks or schoolbooks. This frees time and space for the things you enjoy. Tidying up takes more time, energy and effort, but the results make you happy, relaxed and can help you sleep better.
“Having a clean and tidy room clears my mind and makes me feel calmer,” says The Week Junior reader Harry, aged 13. “I like tidying up. At the same time, it can make places for my books and games, and help me to keep them in order and know where they are.”
When you start tidying up, set easy tasks, such as cleaning one surface or drawer at a time. If time allows, put everything on the floor or bed and sort into four kinds:
: useful things you have good memories of. Donate: things you don’t want but can give away, like books, toys or clothes. Sell: have a tabletop sale or ask an adult to help you use an online marketplace. Throw away or recycle: if it’s broken or worn out, then bin or recycle it.

As the world becomes more digital (数字化), many people are concerned about the influence of technology on the environment. While technology has made our lives easier, it has also led to an increase in electronic waste, or e-waste. E-waste refers to the electronic devices that people throw away like old computers, smartphones, and other electronic devices.
One of the biggest problems with e-waste is that it often contains (包含) harmful chemicals like lead and mercury. These chemicals can pollute the environment and harm human health. Another problem is that e-waste is often not recycled properly. Many people simply throw their old electronics in the trash, which means that they end up in landfills.
However, there are ways to reduce e-waste. One way is to recycle old electronics. Many companies now offer recycling programs where you can bring your old devices and have them recycled properly. Another way is to buy products that are designed to last longer. This means that you won't have to replace them as often, which will reduce the amount of e-waste you produce.
In short, while technology has many benefits, it is important to be aware of the influence it has on the environment. By recycling and buying products that last longer, we can all help reduce e-waste and protect the planet.
1. What is the influence of technology according to the passage?
2. What is e-waste
3. What are the problems of e-waste
4. How can people reduce e-waste
5. Why should people reduce e-waste

根据下文“That meant the passenger paid about $950,”可知,此处是指一位乘客支付了出租车的费用。故选C。
called up打电话给;picked up接人;cheered up使振作起来;put up搭建,张贴。根据空格后“the four travelers from the train station”可知,此处是指张鹏是从火车站“接人”了这四位外国旅客,出租车司机接乘客用pick up。故选B。
上文“the four travelers”是复数,且“dropped … off”是动词短语,应用them指代“four travelers”作宾语,即dropped them off。故选D。
根据上文“When he failed to call the four foreign passengers,”可知,当张鹏打电话联系不上那四位外国乘客时,他“直接”去了之前送他们入住的酒店。

根据上文“hear about her mistake”可知,听到自己多付了巨额车费,乘客的第一反应应该是“惊讶的”,且后文“She was even more surprised...”

“You didn’t find her,” he said unhappily. “We must begin again. But where It’s been two years now!”
“Well, she isn’t at a school in Paris. Let’s look at the schools in England now,” Mr Carmichael suggested.
“Yes,” said Mr Carrisford. “We can begin in London. There’s a school next door, Carmichael.”
As if by magic, at that moment Ram Dass came quietly into the room.
“The little servant-girl (女仆) from the attic is here,” he said to Mr Carrisford, “with the monkey. The monkey ran away again last night to her room. Would you like to see her ”
“Yes,” said Mr Carrisford. “Yes. Bring her in.”
Sara entered and stood before the Indian gentleman, smiling.
“Your monkey came to my room last night,” she said, “and I took him in because it was so cold.”
Mr Carrisford watched her with interest. “That was kind of you,” he said.
Sara looked at Ram Dass by the door. “Shall I give him to the lascar (印度水手) ” she asked.
“How do you know he is a lascar ” said Mr Carrisford.
“Oh, I know lascars,” Sara said. “I was born in India.”
Mr Carrisford sat up suddenly. “In India ” he said. “But you’re a servant at the school next door.”
“Yes, I am now,” said Sara. “But I wasn’t at first.”
The Indian gentleman looked at Mr Carmichael, and then Mr Carmichael looked at Sara.
“What do you mean by ‘at first’, child ” he asked.
“When Father first took me to the school.”
“Where is your father ” said Mr Carmichael.
“He died,” said Sara, very quietly. “His friend ran away with all his money, and there was no money for me. There was nobody to take care of me. So Miss Minchin put me in the attic and said I must work for my bread.”
The Indian gentleman moved in his chair. “What—was your father’s name ” he said. “Tell me.”
Sara looked at him sadly. “Ralph Crewe,” she said. “He died in India from a fever, two years ago.”
Mr Carrisford’s face went very white. “Carmichael,” he whispered, “it is the child— the child ”

32.根据“Do you read information in your head Do you read it aloud Do you take notes, or just ask someone to test you ”可知,作者是通过提问题展开第二段的。
33.根据“Previous studies showed that reading information aloud helped people remember it better than reading it in their heads.”
34.根据“The research team found that reading aloud improved memory.”

G.Always ask if they understand your directions.
36.根据“But just knowing the way is not enough—you must explain it clearly...”
37.根据“Use Landmarks to Guide People”和“...Instead, tell them to go from one easy-to-see place to another”可知,相反,告诉他们从一个容易看到的地方到另一个地方,是对前一句的纠正。
38.根据“try drawing a map...You can add important places”可知,试着画张地图,可以加上重要的地点,中间需要一句解释画地图好处的话,来说明画地图的作用。
39.根据“You might know a very short way, but it could be confusing for others. It is often better to give the easiest way, not the shortest. Even if it is a little longer, it is easier to follow clear landmarks. Usually, the easiest way has fewer turns and more straight roads.”
40.根据“Giving clear directions is an important skill. You need to know the place well...”

Music makes me happy
Music is like a key, which opens the door to the world for me.
I love music because it washes away my worries. When I listen to it, I feel relaxed and peaceful. My favorite types are pop and classical music. Pop songs bring me energy, while classical pieces help me focus on studying. Music influences me deeply. If I feel tired, lively music cheers me up. It teaches me to stay positive. Music is my best friend forever!
