Losing crops is never good, especially when it’s your livelihood. Julio knows this very well — especially after pests (害虫) got hold of his melon farm. Seeing the damage to his crops made him feel desperate. But thankfully, he’s not alone. Since becoming a part of Convoy of Hope’s agriculture program, Julio is receiving the support he needs and learning more about his own land.
“Convoy of Hope has been a great support during this time. Through these training sessions, I’ve learned new techniques for fertilization, care, and nutrition of the melon crop, which has been of great assistance,” he said.
And he doesn’t want to keep what he’s learned to himself. Julio said, “Sharing ideas and knowledge with my fellow producers is important to me because cooperating with others helps us prosper together and be successful in production.”
Farmers like Julio are growing their trade, and the positive effects are multiplying.
“My life has improved significantly as I now have greater knowledge and support to produce and enhance the quality of my crops,” Julio said. “This has allowed me to expand the area of cultivation (耕种) and increase my income to meet my needs. …The best part has been seeing an increase in production. Previously, I cultivated less than one hectare (公顷), and now I plant a full hectare. This has been a blessing for me.”
But Julio isn’t stopping here. “I would like to own my own land instead of renting, so I can work on my own and generate prosperity for my family and fellow producers.”
Thanks to Convoy of Hope’s supporters, farmers such as Julio can go through difficult situations and create solutions for the future.
4. What problem did Julio face at the beginning of the story
A. A lack of farming tools.
B. Poor market demand for melons.
C. Rising land rental costs.
D. Damage to his crops by pests.
5. Why does Julio believe sharing knowledge with other farmers is important
A. It helps him gain wide recognition.
B. It allows everyone to succeed together.
C. It reduces the need for outside support.
D. It improves competition among farmers.
6. What can be inferred from paragraphs 4 and 5
A. Julio’s income increase came before his production rose.
B. Support and training helped Julio make better use of his land.
C. Julio expanded his farmland mainly through renting additional fields.
D. Julio focused more on improving crop quality than on increasing output.
7. What does Julio plan to do in the future
A. Work abroad. B. Leave farming.
C. Buy his own land. D. Focus on training others.

The rising acidity of Earth’s oceans could cause shark teeth to be corroded (腐蚀) and waste away. A shark’s teeth are its most important tool, but a new study has suggested that climate change is damaging and weakening them. “They’re highly developed weapons built for cutting meat, not resisting ocean acid,” said the study’s leading researcher, Maximilian Baum from Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf (HHU).
Though sharks constantly replace their teeth, the worsening condition of our oceans could soon damage them faster than they can be repaired. As our oceans absorb more and more carbon dioxide (CO2) due to climate change, they’re becoming increasingly acidic.
Currently, the oceans are slightly alkaline (碱性的) with a pH of 8.1, but this could drop to as low as 7.3 by 2300. As part of an undergraduate project, which has now been published in Frontiers, Baum aimed to find out how much of an impact this change could have on sea life. He managed to acquire hundreds of blacktip reef shark teeth to use in the investigation.
Around 50 of the undamaged teeth were then placed into tanks filled with water at various pHs, and kept there for eight weeks. When they were inspected at the end of the experiment, it was clear that the teeth in the acidic water had considerably more damage than the teeth in the 8.1 pH water. “We observed visible surface damage such as cracks and holes, increased root corrosion, and structural breakdown,” said Prof Sebastian Fraune from HHU.
The acidic water also caused the surface of the teeth to become rough (粗糙的) and irregular. While this might have helped enhance the shark’s cutting ability, it also compromised the tooth’s structure. This made them more likely to break.
“Maintaining ocean pH near the current average of 8.1 could be critical for the physical integrity of predators’ tools,” said Baum. “It’s a reminder that climate change impacts spread through entire food webs and ecosystems.”
8. Why may shark teeth be damaged faster in the future
A. Ocean plants will decrease.
B. The sea will become more acidic.
C. Their teeth will grow thinner.
D. Sharks will hunt more often.
9. How did the researchers carry out their study
A. They tracked the growth of new teeth over time.
B. They compared teeth from several shark species.
C. They followed sharks in their natural hunting environment.
D. They tested how shark teeth reacted in different water conditions.
10. What does the underlined word “compromised” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Weakened. B. Affected.
C. Repaired. D. Shaped.
11. What message does Baum convey in the last paragraph
A. Sharks will have smaller habitats.
B. Teeth changes help sharks hunt.
C. Ocean pH is important for sea life.
D. Climate change stops food growth.

Think Piglet and Eeyore in the Winnie-the-Pooh. Piglet is a constant worrier, dealing with anxiety; Eeyore thinks over everything that might go wrong, sinking into depression. Both struggle with repetitive negative thoughts.
Clinicians typically address negative thoughts, such as worry, as part of a treatment plan for many diagnosed (诊断) disorders, including depression, anxiety, and so on. “But formal diagnoses are not necessary to help people overcome this painful way of thinking,” experts argue.
Therefore, clinicians should look beyond diagnoses and target negative thinking directly. “We should figure out what it is for this particular person that is keeping him stuck,” says psychologist Michelle Moulds of the University of New South Wales.
“Several therapies (疗法) have emerged in recent years that target repetitive negative thinking directly. Such therapies shift the course of a talk session,” says psychologist Edward Watkins of the University of Exeter in England. Watkins helped develop one such therapy, known as Rumination-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or RFCBT.
For instance, imagine a patient who has been diagnosed with depression and is focused on how hopeless he feels. A clinician trained in traditional CBT will often help patients understand their specific mental health diagnosis by working through the content of their thoughts.
However, a clinician trained in the RFCBT does not need a formal diagnosis. Rather than exploring why something might have happened, or the deeper significance of the event, therapies that target negative thinking help patients shift to more actionable questions, such as how they can do something about it. In other words, they seek to change how people think, regardless of what they are thinking about.
By focusing on the patterns of negative thinking rather than specific diagnoses, these therapies offer a flexible approach that can help anyone struggling with repetitive, unproductive thoughts. This shift in focus empowers individuals to take practical steps toward change, improving mental well-being across a wide range of situations.
12. Why does the author mention Piglet and Eeyore at the beginning
A. To introduce the topic of the text.
B. To describe a familiar literary scene.
C. To present two contrasting characters.
D. To give background information for the study.
13. What does Michelle Moulds think clinicians should focus on
A. The specifics of stressors.
B. People’s thinking pattern.
C. Formal diagnoses mainly.
D Patients’ past experiences.
14. Which best explains the main difference between traditional CBT and RFCBT
A. RFCBT shifts attention from why to how.
B. RFCBT avoids discussing patients’ feelings.
C. Traditional CBT needs no formal diagnosis.
D. Traditional CBT emphasizes behavior more.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Mental Disorders: Traditional Diagnoses and Handling
B. Negative Thoughts: Psychologists’ Research and Guide
C. Ruminations-Focused CBT: A New Intervention Approach
D. Repetitive Negative Thinking: Recognition and Treatment

It’s well-documented that reading teaches kids more than just new facts. Reading aloud to babies activates parts of their brain that support mental imagery and help them gain meaning from language. ____16____ But despite the established benefits of reading, books aren’t accessible to everyone.
In a 2018 study, researchers in New York University placed book vending (销售) machines in poor communities where children’s books are rare or nonexistent. ____17____ What about libraries The researchers asked participants about how they used local libraries and found that they were “rarely seen as an option”.
____18____ This is a time when school and early childhood programs are not in session. As a result, disadvantaged children fall behind academically during this “seasonal summer slide”, widening the gap between them and the disadvantaged kids.
The researchers set out to see how vending machines in four low-income neighborhoods would affect family reading patterns and the academic downslide over summer. The machines were put in the neighborhoods for eight weeks. ____19____ More than 64,000 free books were popped out to 26,200 unique readers over the course of the summer. And the other 38,235 were repeat users.
However, the vending machines weren’t enough to get children uninterested in reading to pick up a book. Forty percent of passersby visited but didn’t make a selection. “Our findings suggest that only having one side of the equation — access to books or adult support — is not enough,” said co-author Susan B. Neuman. “Children need access to books in their neighborhoods. ____20____”
A. They turned out quite popular.
B. The machines provide more books than libraries.
C. Families in these areas don’t have enough access to books.
D. Adults need to create an environment that inspires reading.
E. It also reduces the risk of children having behavior problems.
F. This problem of access to books is worsened over the summer.
G. The authors conducted a series of questionnaires and interviews.

Sophie, fifteen, had always thought of herself as the responsible one in the family. Her thirteen-year-old brother Jake, on the other hand, seemed to live in a world of half-finished homework, lost socks, and endless video games. They argued almost every day — about who should walk the dog, who got to use the computer, and even who should finish the last cookie. Sometimes the arguments were loud enough that the neighbors joked they could hear them through the open windows.
Their parents rarely stepped in unless things got too serious. “You two need to figure it out yourselves,” their dad often told them. Sophie found that rule deeply unfair; Jake just ignored it and returned to whatever he was doing. But one Saturday, their parents gave them a task they couldn’t avoid: planning Grandma’s birthday party, which was only a week away.
At first, it was a disaster. Sophie wanted everything to be perfect — matching tablecloths, homemade cupcakes, soft music. She even made a checklist to keep things “organized”. Jake rolled his eyes. “She just wants to see us, not a fancy restaurant!” he said. They argued for hours until their mom quietly reminded them, “Your grandmother would rather see you working together than fighting.”
Something about that stuck with Sophie. The next morning, she knocked on Jake’s door and said, “Let’s divide the jobs. I’ll handle the food, and you take care of decorations.” Jake hesitated, and then nodded, surprised by her calmer tone. Slowly, the tension began to ease.
When they started working, Sophie noticed Jake had good ideas — he designed a funny photo board with old pictures of Grandma, and it made everyone laugh. She realized she hadn’t given him enough credit before. Jake, in turn, noticed how hard Sophie tried to make things right and stopped teasing (取笑) her. Both of them began to feel that maybe, for once, they could really pull this off together.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;

When the day of the party finally came, Sophie and Jake were both nervous but excited.

【答案】Dear classmates,
To improve our English reading ability and broaden our cultural horizons, Mr. Smith suggests we set up English reading groups. Here is my proposal for group organization.
Each group is better to have 4~5 members, grouped by your reading interests. One acts as the leader to assign tasks, one collects materials, and the others share reading notes. We can read classic novels or news and discuss them every Friday after class. This size ensures full participation; clear division makes work efficient; and regular activities help us form a good reading habit.
Hope you will join the reading groups actively.

When the day of the party finally came, Sophie and Jake were both nervous but excited. The house was filled with the smell of fresh cupcakes, and the decorations Jake had made looked cheerful and bright. When Grandma walked in, she was surprised to see the photo board and laughed until tears came to her eyes. The family sang, played games, and told old stories. For the first time in a long while, Sophie and Jake didn’t argue about anything. They worked side by side, passing plates and taking photos together. Their parents exchanged a smile, knowing the two had learned something important that no lecture could teach.
That night, after everyone left, Sophie and Jake sat together in the quiet living room. Wrapping leftover cake, Sophie said, “You did a great job today.” Jake smiled, “You too. I guess teamwork isn’t that bad.” They laughed, a little embarrassed but proud. Sophie realized that being the older sister didn’t mean giving orders — it meant learning patience. Jake understood that helping out made him feel trusted and capable. Their fights hadn’t disappeared, but something between them had changed; they started to pause, listen, and say sorry. More than winning, they wanted to understand.
