The hobby started in 1942. Nona, then 12, was reading a magazine. Some ads in the magazine were asking for penfriends. One of them caught Nona’s eye. It was from Alice Powers. She lived in America and was also 12. “I was very excited,” Nona said. “I sat down at once, wrote a letter, put it in an envelope together with a picture of myself and posted it.”
Nona spent every day waiting for the postman. Two weeks later—which felt like a lifetime—a reply dropped through the letterbox. “I was overjoyed,” Nona said. “There was a letter and a picture of my new friend. She was on the other side of the world!”
Nona and Alice wanted to learn more about each other. They kept writing. The two found that they had a lot in common (共同点). They liked the same books and the same films.
However, both Nona and Alice were too poor to afford (承担起) a plane ticket. They didn’t meet until 1987. “I was excited to see the person I had been writing to for over forty years,” Nona said.

Once upon a time, there was a musician named Yu Boya. He was good at playing the guqin. However, he always felt that he didn’t have the highest level (水平), so he decided to take a boat trip to Penglai Island in the East China Sea. There, Yu Boya saw the waves (波浪) hitting the rocks, and the seabirds flying up and down and singing happily and loudly. At that moment, a creative idea went into his mind. He used his guqin to bring the beauty of nature and the touching sounds of the music together. Unluckily, no one could understand and enjoy what the music was about. He felt very lonely with a great pity.
One day, Yu Boya saw an old woodcutter listening to his music carefully on the seaside and then asked him to get in his boat. He played the music about the high mountain. The woodcutter described a picture of Mountain Tai in his mind. When Yu Boya played another piece of music to show the waves, the woodcutter seemed to watch a wild sea. Yu Boya shouted excitedly, “My dear friend, Zhong Ziqi, you are the confidant that understands me and my music!” A few years later, Zhong Ziqi passed away. Yu Boya cut off all the strings (琴弦) and stopped playing the guqin after he heard the news.
There are too few close friends as Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi did in the world. Yu Rang, a famous writer in the Warring States Period, once said, “A true man is ready to die for those who know the value of him.” Su Shi, another famous writer in the Song Dynasty, found no one could understand him in his difficult times, seeing himself as a lonely wild bird on a wasted sand island. It means he preferred (宁可) to live alone if he couldn’t find any confidant. Being a confidant has nothing to do with age, distance as well as wealth (财富). He is the one who can always share your joy and sadness. In some ways, a confidant can understand your every act and read your hidden meanings. Whether old or young, a confidant is hard to find. Everyone will never feel sorry for himself if he has a confidant in his life.

A. Visiting his best friend. B. Enjoying the nature.
C. Improving his musical skill. D. Hearing seabirds singing.

A. Wise parent. B. Strict teacher.
C. Kind classmate. D. Close friend.
33. Why did Yu Boya stop playing the guqin after Zhong Ziqi died
A. Because nobody could understand his music, anymore.
B. Because he had problems using the guqin to show feelings.
C. Because he succeeded in finding another confidant.
D. Because people did not like his music at all.
34. What’s the meaning of “A true man is ready to die for those who know the value of him.” in paragraph 3
A. 拣尽寒枝不肯栖,寂寞沙洲冷。 B. 士为知己者死。
C. 相知无远近,万里尚无邻。 D. 人生乐在相知心。

Anything is possible when you have the right people there to help you. We always need a friend to stand behind us, especially when we’re in trouble. What is the true friendship for you Bao Shuya and Guan Zhong set a good example.
Guan and Bao were good friends. Guan came from a poor family. When he and Bao did business together, Guan put less money into the business but took more out in the end. People around Bao were very angry about this. But Bao said that Guan did so because he was poor, not because he was greedy (贪婪的). During the war, Guan secretly left the army (军队) three times. Others thought of him as a coward (胆小鬼). But Bao said Guan left because he needed to look after his aged mother.
Later, Guan served (效力) Prince Jiu while Bao served Prince Xiaobai. These two princes fought to be the king of the State (国家) of Qi, and Prince Xiaobai won. The new king wanted Bao to help him rule (统治) the state, but Bao said Guan was better at that. The king took his advice and chose Guan to help rule the state. Finally, with the help of Guan, Qi became a great state.
Whatever(无论什么)Guan did, Bao always tried to understand him instead of complaining (抱怨) when Guan was in trouble. I think this is the true meaning of friendship.

As a new student in No. 2 Middle School, I made many new friends. But today, I want to introduce one of my special friends to you.
My special friend is Lily. She is an outgoing and kind girl. We have known each other for a long time. Once, I failed in an important exam and was very sad. Lily noticed my sadness and spent a whole afternoon staying with me. She listened to me patiently and encouraged me not to give up. Thanks to her support, I got back my confidence.
We both like reading books. We often go to the library together on weekends. We share our thoughts about the books we've read. From our story, I learned that true friends are always there for you in both good times and bad times. I cherish our friendshipand hope it will last forever.
