Linda Brown, a real estate agent, believes that when it comes to solving homelessness, it takes a village. She
spent nine years supporting homeless people in Springfield, Missouri, through a charitable organization called The
Gathering Tree, which welcomed people a few times each week during daylight hours, providing a safe and
welcoming place for them to take showers, socialize, or simply rest. But they had to close their doors for the night.
“One cold winter night, I watched as my friends walked off into the darkness to a wet, cold camp, while we went
home to a warm bed,” Linda said. “I realized I had to do something.”
She had an idea to create a village of tiny houses to make sure no one slept outside on her watch! Linda started
fundraising. She began by appealing to her fellow estate agents in the area before branching out into local
businesses.
Using these donations, Linda purchased a nearby abandoned area that already had the infrastructure in place.
By February 2019, they’d built 31 tiny homes for their Eden Village and found residents for each one. All the
residents must be good neighbors in order to stay in the village, and they certainly are! Linda was happy when she
learned that the village actually increased local property values rather than lowering them as some people had
feared.
The driving philosophy behind Eden Village is simple: housing is the foundation of recovery. “Witnessing the
struggles of the homeless in those unbearable environments was a turning point for me,” Linda said. “This led to
the concept of a tiny-home community, a place where the chronically disabled can live with dignity and self-worth.”
To this day, Linda firmly believes that there are a million reasons why someone can become homeless, but
each of them can be solved with love and community involvement.
4. What function does The Gathering Tree serve for the homeless
A. It provides them with daytime shelters. B. It raises money for housing projects.
C. It helps them find temporary camps. D. It builds tiny houses for them.
5. What were some local residents initially concerned about
A. A lack of tiny homes available. B. The cost of the construction.
C. The safety of the neighborhood. D. A drop in their house prices.
6. Which statement would Linda Brown most likely agree with
A. Financial aid should be prioritized for the homeless.
B. Housing is fundamental to solving homelessness.
C. Community support is secondary to government aid.
D. Self-reliance is key to regaining dignity.
7. Which of the following can best describe Linda
A. Generous and independent. B. Ambitious and intellectual.
C. Sympathetic and innovative. D. Brave and imaginative.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. B 7. C

One of the top sources of added sugar in children’s diets in America is in their breakfast cereal (麦片). A study
published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that advertising drives sales of high-sugar cereals
when it’s aimed directly at kids under 12 — but not when it targets adults.
In the study, researchers looked at all cereals purchased by 77,000 U. S. households over a nine-year period,
between 2008 and 2017. They also looked at Nielsen ratings data, which closely monitored all the ads that people
in a household saw — both children and adults. What they found was a strong relationship between how much
advertising was targeted to kids and how much sugary cereal that households with children bought. By contrast,
there was no link to increased purchases when ads targeted adults. And these extensive data also showed that
behaviors that were learned in childhood could track into adulthood, which could lead to poor health outcomes over
a lifetime.
The study is the first to directly compare the influence of food advertising exposure by children with that of
adults. The findings offer novel evidence of how food marketing turns children into the “ultimate weapon” in
influencing family spending because they consistently ask their parents to purchase, a concept known as “pester
power.”
The food industry launched the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, a voluntary effort to
police itself. The 21 participating food companies made a commitment to cut back on marketing unhealthy foods to
children under 12 — later revised to under 13. A new study conducted in 2024 showed that children’s exposure to
cereal ads on TV programming aimed at kids has dropped dramatically.
But Lindsey Smith Taillie, a food policy researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, says
these voluntary efforts aren’t making a difference. Advertisements, like kids’ eyeballs, are moving online, making
it even harder to know what marketing children are being exposed to, Taillie notes.
8. What does the underlined phrase “pester power” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Parents’ unconditional love.
B. Children’s uncontrolled spending.
C. Parents’ growing consumption.
D. Children’s repeated purchase requests.
9. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. An expectation for further study.
B. An industry response to the issue.
C. A limitation of the research method.
D. A potential application of the findings.
10. What is Taillie’s attitude toward the voluntary efforts
A. Favorable. B. Tolerant. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Cereal Sales: The New Trend in Modern Diets.
B. How to Stop Your Kids from Eating Sugar.
C. CerealAds: The Hidden Threat to Kids’ Health.
D. The History of Cereal Industry in America.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. D 11. C

A new study suggests that the prospect of a difficult mental task can be as unattractive as physical pain, such
as having a hot object held on your skin. When given a choice between the two, one might assume people would
always pick the harmless mental task over the harmful physical one. “So your first thought would be why you
would ever choose pain,” said lead author Todd Vogel. However, the study’s findings are truly jaw-dropping.
For their experiment, researchers first tested their participants’ individual pain thresholds (疼痛阈值) using a
device which heats up to a set temperature. Participants rated how much pain they experienced at different
temperatures, from 0 (no pain) to 100 (very intense pain).
The participants then performed a memory task called the n-back. During the task, participants see a series of
letters pop up on a screen. As each letter appears, they are asked to confirm whether the on-screen letter matches
one that appeared earlier in the sequence; for example, in a “two-back” task, the participants are required to recall
the letter that appeared two positions earlier. The farther back they’re asked to remember, the more challenging the
task becomes.
The new study included five levels of the n-back, as well as five levels of pain. These n-back and pain levels
were combined in various pairings throughout the study, giving participants the choice to choose one or the other
each round.
“If you have the option between the highest pain option and the lowest effort option, we expected people to
choose the effort,” Vogel noted. “And we also expected the opposite to probably be true. ” But between those two
extremes, where the pain and effort levels were more evenly matched, what would happen then
The result showed only one out of 39 participants in the study chose to perform the memory task every time,
and for all the others, pain was the more appealing option.
“In addition to doing the hard work during a task, you’re experiencing the expectation that you might make a
mistake,” Vogel said. “When we avoid mental effort, there’s a question as to how much of that avoidance can be
blamed on the anxiety over getting something wrong.” This was what they would further figure out.
12. How does the author present the topic in paragraph 1
A. By analyzing a common belief.
B. By introducing a surprising fact.
C. By illustrating a painful experience.
D. By describing the process of a study.
13. What makes the memory task more difficult for participants
A. The number of letters on the screen.
B. The time allowed to recall the sequence.
C. The positional gap between matching letters.
D. The speed at which letters pop up.
14. Why were different pairings of pain and effort provided
A. To confirm the choice in extreme cases.
B. To check the pain thresholds.
C. To identify the participants’ limits.
D. To compare choices at similar levels.
15. What will the researchers probably focus on in their next study
A. The ways to avoid mental effort.
B. The influence of anxiety on choices.
C. The importance of making no mistakes.
D. The connection between pain and memory.

Sandy and Jane came to see the jobo tree on the hilltop again. Jobos were their favorite fruit but the tree
belonged to a lady who lived in the house by the hill. They heard she was difficult, but that sometimes she would
give fruit in return for an errand(差使)
The girls finally gathered their courage to knock on her door. An elderly woman with a fierce look answered,
staring down at the girls. “We heard …”said Sandy, her voice shaky, “that you give jobos in payment for running
an errand.”
The lady raised one eyebrow, then went into the kitchen and took two baskets. She pushed them into the girls’
hands.“Go fill these with jobos, and come right back.”
The girls raced up the hill to the tree and filled the baskets with the ripest jobos. Back at the house, the lady
filled a bag with rice and handed it to Sandy. “Take this bag and one basket of jobos to the Brown family. And ask
them for the payment,” the lady added with a tight smile.“If you return without the payment, you won’t get the
fruit.”
The girls struggled all the way with the bag and the basket. When they were there, Mrs. Brown answered the
door. Inside on the floor were three little children, each painting something on papers.
Mr. Brown was lying sick in bed.Times were hard.
The girls handed her the food.“This is from the lady with the jobo tree, ” said Sandy.
“She asked for the payment, too.”Jane said awkwardly.
“The payment! The payment!” The children repeated, waving the paper in their hands happily.
Sandy and Jane looked at each other strangely. With a smile, Mrs. Brown handed Sandy a large sealed(密封的)
envelope so full that it was almost starting to break open. The girls said goodbye and left quickly. “I wonder,”
Sandy murmured, “whether Mrs. Brown can afford to pay for that food.”

the girls’ paintings! After she explained to Sandy, they arrived at the old lady’s. Awkwardly, Jane handed the lady
the envelope with trembling hands.
The lady opened the envelope, took out a pile of papers and smiled. On the papers were colorful drawings
from the children. At this scene, Sandy and Jane looked at each other and smiled. Then, the girls gained their
payment- a full basket of ripe jobos. For them, it turned out that their errand not only gained them their favorite

Sandy murmured, “whether Mrs. Brown can afford to pay for that food.”
