Technology has been the great divider in many communities. Innovations have happened so fast that the “old
way” of doing things from 20 years ago now feels like a centuries-wide gap.
As a result, daily banking and shopping have become more difficult for senior citizens who grew up relying on
a checkbook and a postal address. To those in their 80s, it feels like the planet has been taken over by space aliens
(外星人) who speak a completely different language. And many youths haven’t realized that what is missing from
their life experience is a rich connection to the past.
During the outbreak of epidemic (流行病), ten-year-old Aadi Kulkarni watched his grandmother struggle to
join family video calls, open attachments and fill out online medical forms. It was more than staying connected in
an online world; Kulkarni realized an entire generation struggled with decreasing dignity and confidence. He also
wanted his own generation to have the same type of respectful relationship he had with his grandmother.
“What if,” he thought, “students like me, who grew up with technology, could help seniors like her feel less
left behind ”
So he founded TechPals. Kulkarni began with a few friends and a handful of seniors at the local library. They
started by teaching the basics of smartphones. What he thought would be a few lessons turned into regularly
scheduled events. Seniors brought their friends. Kulkarni made more friends. He coded a central website to manage
volunteer sign-ups.
“I’ve learned that social impact doesn’t have to require millions of dollars,” says Kulkarni. “Sometimes, it
starts with a few students, a library room and the courage to show up.”
Digital knowledge crosses the divide to help every generation access the amazing world technology has
brought us. But technology is best when added to face-to-face relationships, like that created when a seasoned
grandmother connects with a young grandson and both are eager to learn from each other.
4. What does the author mean by saying “a completely different language”
A. To point out the English language is always changing.
B. To indicate the education of the elderly in the past was poor.
C. To show the elderly have lost track of the fast-developing world.
D. To prove the ability of the elderly to learn language is declining.
5. What inspired Kulkarni to set up TechPals
A. His desire to learn from the old. B. His grandmother’s trouble in digital life.
C. His dream to found a technology company. D. His grandmother’s worsened living conditions.
6. What can be learned about TechPals
A. It encountered doubt at first. B. It simply offers online service.
C. It is popular both at home and abroad. D. It is bridging the generation gap in a way.
7. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Kulkarni: Teaching His Grandmother Tech Skills.
B. Technology: Expanding the Gap Facing the Seniors
C. TechPals: Bridging the Tech Divide between Generations.
D. Young Generations: Seeing the Trouble Faced by the Seniors

About 8.8 million of the world’s people are called scientists. This means only a small number of people know
a scientist in person. Two physicists, Alan Lightman and Martin Rees, wrote a new book called The Shape of
Wonder and their goal is to help the public understand scientists better. They say scientists are just like everyone
else. As individuals, they can be influenced by feelings. But scientists find new things in different ways: some
discoveries happen by accident while others come from small studies. However, all scientists share what the
authors call a “prepared mind” — something they get from years of studying, which helps them notice important
findings.
In the book, Lightman and Rees show readers how scientists think and work. Scientists look at the world
around them, use critical thinking and create and test ideas about how the universe works. This simple process has
led to many important improvements in society, like more food being produced, people living longer and new ways
to treat diseases. The most interesting parts are the stories about different scientists. Unlike the common image in
pop culture — strange and awkward — scientists are made up of different people. Readers meet modern
scientists, such as Lace Riggs, a 30-something American neuroscientist from a wealthy family. The book also
highlights past scientists, like Barbara McClintock. She was an American biologist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize
in Physiology or Medicine for finding “jumping genes”.
In the end, Alan Lightman and Martin Rees argue that scientists should help the public. Today, we live in a
“post-truth” world where people often rely on their feelings, which makes it hard to solve big problems. Scientists’
knowledge can help us deal with important issues, like those related to artificial intelligence. The authors believe
that if people connect with the human side of scientists, they will start seeing them as members of society.
8. What problem do Alan Lightman and Martin Rees aim to solve
A. The number of scientists is dropping.
B. The public are unfamiliar with scientists.
C. Scientists tend to be influenced by feelings.
D. Scientific discoveries are often hard to make.
9. Why are “Lace Riggs” and “Barbara McClintock” mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To show science is a complex subject.
B. To prove scientists are a diverse group.
C. To explain how scientists work and think.
D. To stress scientists are strange and awkward.
10. What did Alan Lightman and Martin Rees tell in the end
A. Their opinions on scientists’ roles.
B. Their tips about solving scientific problems.
C. Their methods of connecting with scientists.
D. Their feelings about scientific development.
11. What’s the text mainly about
A. Two scientists’ stories. B. A new scientific finding.
C. A book for knowing scientists. D. Approaches to being scientists.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11. C

Chicago Booth’s Christopher K. Hsee is a behavioral scientist focusing on what he calls hedonomics (幸福经
济学) . Rather than studying how to produce more “stuff”, hedonomics studies how to extract more happiness from
the existing objects.
Hsee and his Chicago Booth colleague Reid Hastie redefined the term in 2008. Their idea of hedonomics is
based on the idea that people don't need more resources to be happier; they need to use existing resources
differently.
For example, suppose a child enjoys playing with wooden blocks at first but grows tired of them. Hedonomics
suggests the child doesn't need more blocks to be happy; she needs to change how she plays with those blocks.
The same principle applies to experiences. Instead of watching a TV show without control, watch two episodes (集)
per day. Or better yet, apply another method: say you have six episodes to watch. You could watch two a day, or
you could watch one on the first day, two on the second day, and three on the third day. That’s an increasing order.
Or you could do the opposite, in a decreasing order, by watching three at the start and winding down.
Instead of making full use of their resources, many people instead seek to add resources. Hsee, who has
devoted much of the past decade to researching hedonomics, says that can have the opposite effect and lead to a
phenomenon known as the “hedonic treadmill (享乐跑步机) ”. This phrase refers to the tendency of people
enjoying happiness temporarily and keeping on finding new positive stimulation.
Hsee, who grew up in China, recalls when “just having the ability to buy a cheap bicycle” in his city was a big
deal. But by 2012 in China, nearly every family in cities had, on average, a color TV, air conditioner, washing
machine, and refrigerator. Almost nine in ten had a personal computer. Hsee sees his friends, some now able to
afford expensive cars, stuck on the hedonic treadmill as they seek to get more well-being. The problem is that it
takes more and more things to make people happy.
12. What is the meaning of hedonomics
A Following your ideas. B. Producing more resources.
C Pursuing what you want. D. Treasuring what you have.
13. What does the underlined part “winding down” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Watching closely. B. Reducing gradually.
C. Observing carefully. D. Checking regularly.
14. What do people do when they are on the hedonic treadmill
A. They try to get more. B. They use resources wisely.
C. They tend to be more positive. D. They lack material enjoyment.
15. What does the author truly want to convey in the last paragraph
A. People are content with their income. B. China’s economy is developing fast.
C. One’s desires can hardly be satisfied. D. It’s impossible to achieve real happiness.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ms. Pinelli was walking her dog past our driveway while I was taking out the recycling. I greeted her and
patted Boomer, her golden retriever (寻回犬), and told Ms. Pinelli that Boomer were barking (吠叫) almost all the
afternoon. Ms. Pinelli was surprised, and I told her the dog probably saw a bird.
After school the next day, I was practicing the piano when Boomer started barking again. Anyway, he never
used to bark when I practiced. Ten minutes later, he was still barking. Jumping up, I decided to find out why, but I
didn’t see any birds.
Confused, I went back indoors, calling Ms. Pinelli to tell her what was going on. Having heard my description,
Ms. Pinelli decided to come back home to have a look. When she arrived, Boomer was still barking. She put him
into her car and drove off.
After dinner, Ms. Pinelli stopped by our house. She told me Boomer was fine. The vet had checked it out and
concluded that Boomer probably missed Leo, Ms. Pinelli’s son. Leo had started college in that fall. He had been
living at home for the first few months, but recently he decided to move closer to the school.
“I should have noticed that Boomer missed Leo,” I said. “I miss him too. Did you know that Leo taught me
how to throw a baseball ”
“I’m not surprised.” Ms. Pinelli smiled, and then sighed. “Boomerang (回旋镖) still sleeps in Leo’s bedroom
every night.”
I didn’t know Boomer was nicknamed “Boomerang” at all. Ms. Pinelli explained it was Leo’s idea because
that dog was like a boomerang when they played fetch — running off and then returning. I understood. After all,
Boomer is a retriever!
Ms. Pinelli thanked me again for watching out for Boomer. She said she would leave the TV on the next day. I
promised if that wouldn’t help, I could take it out for a walk.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
When I got off the bus the next day, I could hear Boomer barking.

【答案】
When I got off the bus the next day, I could hear Boomer barking. I hurried towards Ms. Pinelli’s house, my
heart filled with concern. As I approached, I saw Boomer standing by the fence, his tail wagging anxiously. I called
out to him, and he immediately ran towards me, barking excitedly. I could tell he was eager for some attention and
companionship. I quickly took out his leash and decided to take him for a long walk, hoping it would help ease his
loneliness.
“Do you miss playing fetch with Leo ” I said softly to Boomer. He looked up at me with those big, brown
eyes, as if he understood every word. We walked to the park, and I threw a ball for him to fetch. He ran back and
forth, his energy seemingly endless. It was clear that playing fetch was his favorite activity, and I could only
imagine how much he missed doing it with Leo. As the sun began to set, I sat down on a bench and decided that
even though Leo was away, I would make sure he never felt alone again.普洱市 2025—2026 学年高二年级上学期期末教学质量监测

注意:
