Elodie never dreamed of becoming a local star. At 68, she was a retired tailor with free afternoons and a small
and narrow attic (阁楼) filled with leftover fabrics from her old shop. What began as a way to reuse old pieces of
cloth soon grew into a heartwarming community treasure.
It started with a small cloth cottage, stitched (缝制) from worn cotton and decorated with tiny button windows
— materials she’d saved from decades of dressmaking. Each evening, she added more: a mini bakery, a little
bridge, and tiny figures. Elowen, an 8-year-old neighbor with a curious mind, often stayed by her attic window,
watching quietly with bright eyes.
Elowen’s single mother was grateful that Elodie welcomed the girl’s company; the tailor would gently explain
her stitching techniques and the stories behind each tiny building. When a nearby preschool learned about the
village, they invited Elodie to bring her work for a class show. She hesitated at first but agreed, and soon, little ones
were learning about crafts, patience, and storytelling through her cloth creations. Elowen helped Elodie display the
village, proudly introducing each detail to the kids.
Elowen’s cousin, a part-time photographer, took photos of the village and posted them on a small craft blog.
The post gained attention widely, and people began sending Elodie small fabrics — linen from a family farm in
Maine, silk from a retired tailor in Vermont. Even a stranger from Oregon, who read the blog, sent her a package of
hand-sewn tiny cloth flowers, ideal for decorating the mini buildings.
On weekends, Elodie let children help stitch simple cloth pieces, their small fingers guided by her experienced
hands, smiles lighting up their faces. Parents noticed their kids growing more attentive and creative, inspired by
Elodie’s passion. By her 75th birthday, her attic village had become a local treasure — preschools included visits
in their craft lessons, senior centers arranged group tours, and craft lovers came for advice.
4 Why did Elodie create the small cloth cottage
A. To make her attic a local star. B. To repurpose the used offcuts.
C. To live a free afternoon life. D. To attract town kids’ company.
5. What lay behind the preschool’s attention to Elodie’s work
A. It was of educational value. B. It encouraged Elowen’s mother.
C. It involved a neighbor’s child. D. It was Elowen’s recommendation.
6. What does paragraph 4 reflect
A. The diversity of fabric sources. B. People’s support for her work.
C. Bloggers’ love for craft works. D. The growth of the cloth village.
7. What message does the text convey
A. Many hands make light work. B. One is never too old to learn.
C. Small things make a big difference. D. Dreams lead to unexpected chances.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. B 7. C

People have become used to living with AI quickly, but AI has raised serious worries about jobs. For if
machines outperform people in reading complex legal texts, translating languages or making arguments, won’t
those traditional human workers become irrelevant Yet in reality, this is not the case. Unemployment in the EU is
at a historic low of about 6%, half that of a decade ago. In the UK, it’s even lower at 5.1% — the level of the
prosperous early 2000s — and in the US, it’s lower, still at 4.4%.
It’s happened before. For example, after the first ATM in the world was launched by Barclays in London in
1967, there were fears that staff at high street bank branches would become obsolete. The opposite turned out to be
the case. In the US, over the 30-year period of ATM growth, the number of bank tellers actually increased by 10%.
ATMs made it cheaper to open bank branches and more communities gained access to financial services.
AI will take away some jobs. But just as there has been no immediate AI prosperity when it comes to
economic growth, there is no immediate shift in employment. And in 2016, Geoff Hinton, a major figure in the
development of AI, recommended that the world “should stop training radiologists (放射科医生)” because robots
were getting better than humans at analyzing images. Ten years later, demand for radiologists in the US is at a
record high. AI-driven image analysis has improved the role of radiologists, by allowing them to treat a far greater
number of patients.
On the other hand, many believed universal access to AI assistants with info-processing and communication
skills would narrow earning inequality. But recent studies found the opposite: highly skilled professionals benefit
most from AI support. In my research with teammates, we found that giving chess players top-quality advice does
little to close the gap between the best and the worst because lower ability players were less likely to follow
high-quality advice. Perhaps this is AI’s greatest risk: some benefit far more from it than others.
8. What do the statistics in paragraph 1 indicate
A. AI replaces many human traditional jobs. B. Unemployment rates are falling globally.
C. Economic growth can rely on AI heavily. D. Technology may generate new positions.
9. What does the underlined word “obsolete” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Perfect. B. Insecure. C. Unnecessary. D. Unwilling.
10. What can we learn about AI’s impact on radiologists
A. AI has replaced radiologists in medical imaging.
B. The demand for radiologists has decreased greatly.
C. AI helps radiologists treat more patients efficiently.
D. Radiologists have lost their professional skills due to AI.
11. What’s the author’s attitude to the view that AI increases workers’ income inequality
A. Unclear. B. Critical. C. Uncertain. D. Approving.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. D
D
Researchers at Penn State University found that households using electricity for space and water heating
consumed far less energy than those relying on natural gas. Electric heat pumps stood out in particular, with
modeled heating energy use intensity nearly four times lower than that of traditional gas-fired power (炉). For the
average US home, this difference indicates significant savings potential on energy bills.
Homes equipped with central heat pumps showed an average modeled heating energy use of 0.0237
megawatt-hours per square meter, compared to 0.0918 for homes with gas-operated central furnaces. Heat pumps
transfer heat rather than generating it, which explains their superior efficiency. According to the US Department of
Energy, this approach can reduce electricity use for heating by around 50 percent compared to electric resistance
heating like furnaces and baseboard heaters.
Gas heating systems don’t fully transform the energy from fuel into usable heat, as some remains unused or
escaped through incomplete burning. Electric systems avoid this by not using on-site burning. Homes using electric
water heaters also consumed less energy than those using gas, or oil systems, with oil water heaters showing
roughly double the energy intensity of electric models. With natural gas still the most common heating fuel
nationwide, and electricity second, the findings suggest millions of households could reduce their energy use by
switching to heat pumps.
The study also discovered more refrigerators and televisions, paired with frequent clothes dryer and
dishwasher use, raised household energy use in 39% of states. While these patterns reflect lifestyle choices,
appliance (电器) standards and energy labels make it easier to pick efficient models. Replacing older equipment
with efficient options when it wears out offers a simple way to reduce demand without changing routines. Besides,
researchers found homes generating electricity on-site through solar panels consumed less energy from the grid (电
网). Yet only 3.48% of US residences reported using solar electricity, showing adoption remains rare. Wider use of
rooftop solar could help households manage energy costs while reducing reliance on centralized grids.
12. How does the author show electric heat pumps’ heating efficiency in paragraph 2
A. By presenting data comparison. B. By clarifying a concept.
C. By describing experiments. D. By giving examples.
13. What is one disadvantage of gas heating systems
A. They need constant fuel supply. B. They require frequent maintenance.
C. They produce less heat output. D. They lose energy as waste heat.
14. What is one practical suggestion researchers offer for reducing household energy use
A. Mounting more wind energy facilities. B. Upgrading appliances efficiently.
C. Reducing appliance use frequency. D. Relying on solar electricity heavily.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. A Comparison of Heating Systems B. Our roles in Energy Consumption
C. Roads to Lower Home Energy Use D. Ways to produce Household Energy
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. C

On a windy autumn afternoon, while walking home from school, Gina caught sight of a tiny dog outside a
park, a poor little creature with messy fur (毛) and a hurt leg that was shaking violently because of fear. She went
down on her knees gently and attempted to reach out for it, only for the dog to step back with soft cries escaping its
throat, which made Gina’s heart ache for the helpless animal.
Unwilling to leave it all by itself, she hurried to a nearby grocery store and bought some bread, and when she
placed the bread on the ground, the dog inched slowly forward to eat it, allowing Gina to touch its head softly as
she said softly, “I’ll call you Lucky,” hoping the name would bring the little dog good luck, even though she was
troubled by the fact that her mom had always refused to let her keep a pet at home.
Just as she gently brushed its fur, a truck passed noisily, scaring Lucky into bushes. Gina searched anxiously
until evening, finding it shaking in a corner. Knowing she couldn’t bring Lucky home directly, she carried it to her
community’s unused storage room — for residents’ old stuff.
Early the next morning, Gina took warm milk, a clean cloth and her old blanket to the room, carefully cleaning
Lucky’s wound before wrapping it and making a warm bed. Every day after school, she rushed there to feed Lucky
and talk to it, and she even asked her dog-owning classmate for tips on caring for an injured puppy. Each time she
arrived, Lucky soon recognized her, wagging (摇) its tail weakly, yet three days later, its wound started to get
infected and it refused to eat anything.
Filled with panic, Gina knew she could not deal with the infection alone; she hesitated for a long time, for
telling her parents would mean breaking their rule, but letting Lucky suffer in pain was something she could never
bear, and at last, she made a decision.

That evening, Gina led her mom to the storage room. On seeing the weak and trembling dog with a badly
infected leg, Mom’s heart melted completely. She did not get angry or blame Gina at all. Instead, she knelt down
and gently touched the poor little dog, moved by her daughter’s kindness and responsibility. Realizing how serious
the situation was, she immediately decided to take Lucky to the animal hospital for professional treatment. On the
way, Gina told her everything, and Mom finally agreed to let her keep the lovely dog.
Lucky recovered soon after it returned from the animal hospital. Its fur grew clean and shiny, and it became
lively and active, running around happily every day. Lucky followed Gina wherever she went, wagging its tail
warmly and showing endless trust and love. This experience not only taught Gina the importance of love and
responsibility but also deepened the understanding between her and her mom. Kindness finally turned a small
rescue into the warmest and most unforgettable memory for the whole family.
