In a house far from the city lived John and his mother. John's only hobby was wandering in the nearby picturesque forest. In its center was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. Lovely animals such as deer or rabbits were playing around and cute birds were singing in trees.
Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he desired to become a great artist and present all the breathtaking scenes to the world.
John studied in the local primary school. Life was not easy for John and his mom after his father died. Knowing what hard work his mother did to make ends meet, John really didn't want his mother to worry. His mother knew the significance of education in life but she was against his dream of becoming an artist. “The profession of artist can't aid a person in meeting his daily expenses,” she would say. But as each day passed, John became more passionate about his dream.
Due to the living circumstances, even buying some new colors would be a luxury.
John only used the worn drawing file and limited colors for his daily practice. Though lacking fine painting materials, he never gave up drawing. He spent a significant amount of time staying in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinct gift for art, he drew beautifully.
One day John read about a competition being held in the town, whose deadline was only two days away. He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he was in a dilemma(两难境地) because for the competition, he needed special paints and some brushes. He didn't have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew her prejudice against art.
That evening his mom returned from work and handed him a few paper notes, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was enough for his desired materials! John's face lit up.

“David, you're a natural on the field!” Coach Martinez shouted after another impressive practice. As the other players cheered and headed for the locker room, one teammate joked, “Better get his autograph now—future national star!” David laughed, but inside, the words stirred a familiar dream: representing his country on the soccer field, just like his heroes.
At 12, David had already learned the value of hard work. With his mother struggling to raise him and his twin sisters, he decided to buy his first pair of professional soccer sneakers on his own. For seven months, he woke early for a paper route and ran a lemonade stand during vacation. Finally, his piggy bank was stuffed with enough savings for the neon-orange shoes he'd admired for weeks—shoes with “unbeatable grip(抓力)”,perfect for mastering those tricks on the field.
“Mom, save your money for Tracy and Katie's birthday party,” David insisted when his mother offered to help. “I want these shoes to be mine, with every cent earned by myself.” His mother smiled, proud but weary, and he determined to make her proud on the field too.
On the school bus ride home, David couldn't contain his excitement. “Gabriel, tonight's the night! I'm buying those sneakers after homework—want to come?” His classmate Gabriel, usually quiet, nodded with a faint smile. Suddenly, the bus jolted(颠簸) over a gap, and Gabriel's shoe slid off—revealing a shabby, hole-dotted canvas with worn edges. David froze. The underside was practically coming off, the laces gone, and the fabric was so worn that it barely protected Gabriel's feet.
Gabriel hurried to grab the shoe, cheeks flushing red. “They … they're still good,” he mumbled, avoiding David's gaze. But David saw the truth: these shoes weren't just old—they were unwearable. He thought of his own dream shoes waiting at the store, with their shining color and top design, and then looked at Gabriel's shoes again. The bus continued rolling, but David barely heard it over the rapid pounding of his heartbeat.

My best friend, Cocoa, and I live in a senior-citizen apartment complex in a lovely small town. Cocoa is a ten-year-old poodle(贵宾犬) and I am a sixty-nine-year-old lady, so you can see we both qualify as senior citizens.
Years ago, I promised myself that when I retired I would get a chocolate poodle to share my golden years. From the very beginning, Cocoa has always been exceptionally well-behaved. I never have to tell him anything more than once. He is extremely neat—when taking toys from his box to play, he always puts them back when he is finished. I have been accused of being obsessively neat, and sometimes I wonder if he mimics me or if he was born that way, too.
He is a wonderful companion. When I throw a ball for him, he picks it up in his mouth and gives it back to me. He does many amusing things that make me laugh, and when that happens, he is so delighted that he just keeps it up. I enjoy his company very much.
But almost two years ago, Cocoa did something that challenged comprehension. Was it a miracle or a coincidence It is certainly a mystery.
One afternoon, Cocoa started acting strangely. I was sitting on the floor playing with him when he started pawing and sniffing at the right side of my chest. He had never done anything like this before, and I told him, “No.”
Usually, one “no” is sufficient, but not that day. He stopped briefly, and then suddenly ran toward me from the other side of the room, throwing his entire weight—eighteen pounds—at the right side of my chest. He crashed into me and I yelled in pain. It hurt more than I thought it would have.
Soon after this, I felt a lump(肿块). I went to the doctors, and after X-rays, tests and lab work were done, they told me I had cancer.

When cancer starts, a wall of calcium(钙) builds to which the lump or cancer attaches itself. ______________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This calcium wall emits a unique scent, undetectable to humans but as clear as a signal to Cocoa's powerful sense of smell. His persistent pawing and that forceful impact were not acts of mischief but desperate attempts to alert me to the hidden danger within my body. Learning this, my initial shock and pain transformed into overwhelming gratitude. My dear Cocoa wasn't hurting me; he was trying to save me, in the only way he knew.
Was Cocoa just aware of what he was doing ______________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He may not understand the concept of cancer, but he undoubtedly sensed a grave threat to his beloved companion, driving him to act with such urgent force. Throughout my following treatments, he rarely left my side, resting his head on my lap as if to soothe my fear and pain. His quiet presence became my greatest comfort. This experience deepened our connection beyond that of pet and owner. He became my guardian angel in fur, a living reminder of the profound, mysterious bonds we share with the animal world—a bond built on a love that needs no words.
