In the busy city of New York, a man named Alex spent nearly 30 years searching for his long-lost childhood best friend, Sam. Growing up together in the same neighbourhood, they had shared countless memories and adventures. From exploring hidden corners of the neighbourhood park to sharing secrets under the night sky, their friendship was a storybook tale. But when Sam's family suddenly moved away during their teenage years, that story was left unfinished. Despite the passage of time, Alex never forgot Sam and the bond they shared.
Over the years, Alex tried every possible means to locate Sam. He checked old phone books, contacted many friends, and even used social media, but all his efforts were in vain. It seemed as if Sam had disappeared into the air. Yet, the bond they once shared kept Alex's hope alive.
One day, while looking through an old photo album, Alex came across a faded picture of Sam and himself, taken during a summer camp they had attended as kids. The photo captured(记录下) Sam's wide smile and his signature gesture, running his hand through his thick curly(卷曲的) brown hair. Alex couldn't help recalling their happy times swimming in the lake, telling stories by the campfire and laughing together.
Feeling hopeful, he got in touch with the camp organisers, hoping they might have some clues. Luckily, the camp had maintained records of past attendees and they were able to provide Alex with a list of potential contacts. Weeks passed as Alex reached out to each name on the list. It wasn't until he contacted the last name on the list that he finally got a breakthrough.
The person on the other end of the line was Sam's cousin, who had kept in touch with Sam over the years. She was excited to hear from Alex and immediately gave Alex Sam's number.

It suddenly dawned on him that their friendship was a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of never giving up on what truly matters.
“You know, Sam,” Alex said, “this whole journey made me realize something. Just as the saying goes, ‘Sunshine always comes after the rain.’ Our friendship is that sunshine, and I'm so glad we found each other again.”
With shaking hands, Alex picked up his cellphone. __________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He dialed Sam's number, his heart pounding like a drum. When a familiar yet deepened voice answered, Alex's own voice cracked with emotion as he said, “Sam It's me … Alex.” After a moment of stunned silence, Sam gasped, “Alex I can't believe it! After all these years!” They talked for hours, filling in the decades of separation with stories of careers, families, and memories only they shared. Tears welled in Alex's eyes as he realized their bond had never truly broken. They agreed to meet at the park.
When Alex approached the park entrance, a familiar figure came into view. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Though time had etched lines on their faces and silvered their hair, Sam's warm smile and the way he still ran a hand through his curly hair were unmistakable. They embraced tightly, laughing and crying simultaneously, as if no time had passed at all. Sitting on their favourite bench, they promised never to lose each other again. Had Alex given up his search, this heartfelt reunion would never have happened.

The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma's farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great chance for you to stay with your grandma,” Dad said as he drove. Every moment, we were moving farther away from the city, the place where I knew how to do things right.
The car engine wasn't off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look unhappy. Why?” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money her neighbor Mr Jackson had lost because of my mistake Was he still
upset with me “I'm fine,” I answered. “I'm just missing my computer puters are something I'm good at.” “That sounds disappointing,” Grandma nodded.
I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone and Mr Jackson was like family to her. Then one day I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds. He lost almost all his roses for the farmers' market.
Now, back at the farm, I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr Jackson! He was opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled to her. “Just a second for the freshly harvested roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
However, Mr Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent(有能力的) computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn't mean you never make mistakes.”
I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us We want to sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts(零件) for our Internet connection, but we just can't set it up,” Grandma asked. No Internet. They seemed to live in the twentieth century.

“I can definitely help with that! Where are the parts?” Following Grandma, I went into the room, where a computer sat surrounded by some scattered parts. Rolling up my sleeves, I carefully connected everything. It was a piece of cake for me. “Done!” I announced confidently. After a few adjustments, the Internet was up and running. Now it was time to sell the roses. I decided to start from my social media platform. I quickly uploaded photos, added descriptions, and set prices. Before long, notifications started showing up—people were noticing. My abilities made a difference!

“This is amazing, Jude!” Grandma cheered with joy as she began bustling about, packing flowers. Mr Jackson chuckled warmly as he handed me another bunch to label. The energy was electric—everyone was on their feet, moving quickly to keep up with the growing orders. The farm felt alive, and so did I. To our surprise, the roses sold out in just half a day. “You've brought the farm into the twenty-first century, Jude,” Grandma hugged me tightly. A(2025湖北武汉4月调研)
I hurried into Lehman's grocery store. I was there to buy my grandmother's hearing aid batteries. More importantly, this was my chance to visit the love of my life—Artie.
I ran to the shelf he was on, and there he was, right where I last saw him: a grey little guy with a large mouth that fit perfectly over my shoulder as I hugged him tightly. I adored that stuffed dolphin. As I held Artie, Mrs Lehman, who had always been kind to me, passed by and smiled knowingly, “Hugging that dolphin again, huh?”
But my brother, Rick, noticed I took a long time in Lehman's, saying, “You are a thirteen-year-old girl now. You are supposed to be quicker. Next time, I will go with you.” Oh, great! My brother, Rick. He always laughed at me.
But I wouldn't give up. So, as we walked into the store, I suggested to Rick that he get the batteries, since he was older. Then I headed towards Artie. There he was, awaiting me. I grabbed him and hugged him tightly. Just then, I heard Rick saying, “What in the world are you doing?”
“This is Artie,” I said. “I hug him every single time I come here. I can't afford it so I hope he doesn't get sold because I just love this little guy.” The look on Rick's face was unreadable, but I knew deep down that he wasn't going to make fun of me. In fact, a few times when he accompanied me to Lehman's, he said, “Go on and hug your dolphin, if it's still there.”
One day, Rick was not home, so I went to Lehman's alone. I went straight to Artie's shelf. But he was gone. I searched every shelf but couldn't find him. Suddenly, a voice from the counter interrupted my search.

“I'm so sorry, dear. The dolphin has been sold,” she said with sympathy, giving my shoulder a comforting pat. Upon hearing her words, I felt sadness washing over me, tears streaming down my cheeks. Never had I imagined that the day of parting with Artie would arrive so soon. Frustrated and desperate, I left the store, dragging my feet towards home. Clutching Artie tightly in my arms, I felt the silent love from my family, a warm current flowing through my heart.

The Right Thing to Do
Fauna had always dreamed of keeping a pet. Time and again, she asked her parents, promising to walk, feed, and look after it. Each time, though, they gave the same gentle response: “We'll see.”
One afternoon, on her way home from school, Fauna saw a little dog wandering near the park. Its fur was messy, and it looked lost, sniffing the ground as if searching for something. Feeling curious and hopeful, Fauna bent down and called it. The dog quickly ran over, wagging(摇) its tail and gently pressing its nose into her hand, like they had known each other forever.
She looked around, but no one seemed to be searching for the dog. Feeling pity for the lost dog, Fauna decided to take it home. As they walked side by side, her heart swelled with joy. It felt as though this was the pet she had always dreamed of—a friend she had been waiting for.
At the front door, Fauna's mother greeted her with a warm smile. Although she found the dog adorable, she gently reminded Fauna that they needed to try and find its owner. If the dog was lost, someone must be missing it. Fauna reluctantly(不情愿地) agreed, though part of her wished no one would come forward to claim the little dog.
Over the next few days, Fauna and the dog—whom she named Buddy—grew inseparable. She fed him, played with him, and let him sleep curled up at the foot of her bed. Every day, it became harder to imagine life without him. Buddy seemed happy too, wagging his tail whenever she came home from school. But Fauna knew deep down that she had to do the right thing. She and her parents posted flyers around town, hoping to find Buddy's owner.
Just a few days later, the phone rang. Fauna's heart sank as her father answered. From the conversation, it was clear that the caller was Buddy's owner. He described Buddy perfectly—the friendly eyes and playful personality. Fauna knew Buddy would soon be leaving her. Her father arranged for the owner to come by and pick Buddy up.

Growing up, I was always shy and unconfident in myself. Aside from my parents, I felt others found my shyness difficult to accept. It used to be something that affected my life in the most negative way possible. It made me unable to talk in any setting in which I felt uncomfortable. This means that I wasn't even able to speak in class, chat with my friends, order my own food, etc.
In the 5th grade, my parents moved to a neighbouring city because of the job relocation and I changed schools. I found myself in a new classroom with a new teacher, whom we called Ms S, and surrounded by 30 new faces. This was fairly terrifying. And so when I was asked to stand up and introduce myself, I was trembling.
Still then, I was labelled as “shy and quiet”. I didn't have a lot of friends, only spoke in class if I really had to, kept everything to myself, avoided public events, and panicked badly at the thought of oral presentations in class.
This haunted(萦绕) me until one day, Ms S announced in class that each of us would have to perform a solo in front of the class. I had no idea that this was going to happen. When it was my turn, she called me up to the front, instructed the piano player to begin and I very unwillingly sang “Cuckoo, cuckoo, pray what do you do …” in a barely audible, high-pitched voice, with the rest of silent children staring up at me. Ms S stood next to the piano, saying: “Louder! Louder! ” But I didn't know how to project my voice; I couldn't make it any louder.
I was really upset at it. I cried for a few hours. I suspected my childhood shyness was largely unsupported in the new school. This even made me not want to go to school.

I'd always been told to take care of my older brother, Brian, who was born weak and small. I'd often tie his shoes or prepare another glass of water for him. My mom saw my larger size and strong body as a sign that I was to be a kind of guardian angel(守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case.
One day our school sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest. First prize was $100, and I knew just how I would spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying to own. So I decided the first-place bonus definitely had to land in my pocket.
When I had to carve the perfect pumpkin I'd picked out, it dawned on me that with my big clumsy fingers I'd surely screw it up(搞砸). I thought of Brian's smaller, delicate hands and knew he was the man for the job. I immediately begged Brian. Unexpectedly, he asked for a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly doing the math in my head, I figured out even if I split(分摊) the first prize, I'd still have enough cash for the game. So I gave in to Brian's demands. With skillful hands Brian carved the perfect face, and now we had the best pumpkin ever.
Then the unexpected happened: We came in second. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I needed every penny of that to buy the game. On the day of the award ceremony, the principal handed over the money to me because Brian was home, sick with a cold.
“If he had really wanted to win, he would have been here today,” I thought to myself, justifying stealing the cash from under poor Brian's runny nose. With hardly a thought, I ran to the store and bought my dream game. That night when Brian asked if we had won, I denied, afraid to look into his eyes.
The whole thing was never mentioned again until the day when Brian was packing for college. I played my usual role in helping him pack when I came across an old album filled with photos he had taken as the school photographer.

A(2025湖北新八校协作体5月模拟)
It was an unusually quiet morning in the emergency room on December twenty-fifth. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses standing around the nurses' station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day.
I was a triage nurse(分诊护士) that day, and was having a cup of hot drink in the nurses' station when an admitting clerk came to tell me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.
I whined(哭嚷着), “Five, how did I get five!”
So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my triage desk, a pale skinny woman and four small children in somewhat messy clothing.
“Are you all sick?” I asked suspiciously.
“Yes,” she said weakly, lowering her head.
“Okay,” I replied, unconvinced, “who's first?” One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual questions. When it came to descriptions of their presenting problems, things got a little strange. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren't accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still painfully. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong. When I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her because, even though the waiting room was empty, ambulances had brought in several more critical patients in the back, she responded, “Take your time! It's warm in here.” She turned and, with a smile, guided her children into the waiting room.
I checked the chart after the admitting clerk had finished registering the family. No address—they were homeless. The waiting room was warm.
I went back to the nurses' station and mentioned the homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses, complaining about working on Christmas, turned to sympathy for a family just trying to get warm on Christmas.

We quickly gathered extra blankets and a few old toys, decorating the room with some leftover Christmas lights. Snacks and fruits were placed on the table, making the area look more festive. Determined to make the family feel welcome and cared for, we joined them and spent time chatting with them. Cold as the outside was, the waiting room was filled with warmth and laughter.
The “party” lasted into the late afternoon. _________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Having sought help from a local charity, we arranged a temporary shelter for the family. With evening approaching, it was time for the family to leave. “Thank you so much. You've given us the best Christmas,” the mother said, her voice filled with gratitude. The kids threw themselves into nurses' arms, tears streaming down their cheeks. We watched as they walked out of the hospital gate and disappeared around the corner, feeling warmth surging through our hearts. At that moment, it dawned on me that the true meaning of Christmas lies not in the gifts or celebrations, but in the compassion and support we offer to those in need.

When Jane taught the sixth-grade class at Morris School, all 34 of her students were dear to her, while Mark was truly special. He had that happy-to-be-alive attitude that made even his occasional tricks delightful.
Mark talked all the time. Jane reminded him again and again that talking without permission was unacceptable, and his response always sounded sincere: “Thank you for correcting me, Sister!”
One morning, Jane's patience was growing thin when Mark talked once too often. She looked at Mark and said, “If you say one more word, I'm going to tape your mouth shut!” Not even ten seconds passed before someone said, “Mark is talking again.” Having stated the punishment in front of the class, Jane decided she had to act on it. She walked to Mark's desk, tore off two pieces of tape, made a big X with them over his mouth, and then returned to the front of the classroom.
As Jane glanced at Mark to see how he was doing, he winked(眨眼) at her. That did it! Jane started laughing. The entire class cheered as she shook her head and walked back to remove the tape. His first words were, “Thank you for correcting me, Sister.”
One Friday afternoon, after working hard on a new idea all week, the students were getting discouraged and starting to get annoyed with each other. To help lift their spirits and encourage a positive atmosphere, Jane asked them to write down the nicest things about the other students on a piece of paper and hand them in. Mark appeared nervous as if he was worrying his classmates would forget anything nice about him. That Saturday, Jane wrote down each student's name on a separate sheet of paper and listed what everyone else had said about them.
On Monday, Jane gave each student their lists. As the children read them, the classroom was filled with quiet excitement and soft laughter.

“Mark is so humorous. He always makes us laugh,” he read one of the comments, his voice trembling slightly. With his cheeks flushing red, Mark read the notes about his strengths with a hint of embarrassment. Never had he expected that his classmates would be so tolerant towards him and even find his bright spots. So moved was he that tears welled up in his eyes, blurring his vision. To everyone's astonishment, from then on, Mark stopped disrupting the class. Instead, he raised his hand actively to participate in classroom activities, keeping to the rules.
Jane was overjoyed to see Mark again at school after so many years. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As soon as Mark spotted Jane, he rushed over. “Sister Jane, you never know how much the comments from my classmates impacted on me. They inspired me to become a better person,” he said earnestly, his eyes shining with gratitude. Jane looked at the confident and sunny young man in front of her, a warm smile spreading across her face. At that moment, she realized that sometimes a single teaching activity could truly change a child. Determined to continue discovering the strengths of her students, Jane felt a renewed sense of purpose in her teaching career.
